The works of the Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso illustrates (...)

    Avicenna's denial of life in plants.Akihiro Tawara - 2014 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 24 (1):127-138.

    Midwife or gynecologist? M.-A. Boivin (1773-1841).Anne Carol - 2011 - Clio 33:237-260.

Detecting Duplication in Students’ Research Data: A Method and Illustration.Peter J. Allen, Amanda Lourenco & Lynne D. Roberts - 2016 - Ethics and Behavior 26 (4):300-311.
Research integrity is core to the mission of higher education. In undergraduate student samples, self-reported rates of data fabrication have been troublingly high. Despite this, no research has investigated undergraduate data fabrication in a more systematic manner. We applied duplication screening techniques to 18 data sets submitted by psychology honors students for assessment. Although we did not identify any completely duplicated cases, there were numerous partial duplicates. Rather than indicating fabrication, however, these partial duplicates are likely a consequence of poor (...)

The Role of Policy in Philosophy of Education: An Argument and an Illustration.John White - 2012 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 46 (4):503-515.
The article consists of a general section looking at changes since the 1960s in the links between philosophy of education and policy-making, followed by a specific section engaging in topical policy critique. The historical argument claims that policy involvement was far more widespread in our subject before the mid-1980s than it has been since then, and discusses various reasons for this change. The second section is a close examination of the Expert Panel's December 2011 recommendations on the future of the (...)

Ethical problems in conducting research in acute epidemics: The pfizer meningitis study in nigeria as an illustration.Emmanuel R. Ezeome & Christian Simon - 2008 - Developing World Bioethics 10 (1):1-10.
The ethics of conducting research in epidemic situations have yet to account fully for differences in the proportion and acuteness of epidemics, among other factors. While epidemics most often arise from infectious diseases, not all infectious diseases are of epidemic proportions, and not all epidemics occur acutely. These and other variations constrain the generalization of ethical decision-making and impose ethical demands on the individual researcher in a way not previously highlighted. This paper discusses a number of such constraints and impositions. (...)

Reading Shaftesbury's Pathologia: An Illustration and Defence of the Stoic Account of the Emotions.Christian Maurer & Laurent Jaffro - 2013 - History of European Ideas 39 (2):207-220.
The present article is an edition of the Pathologia (1706), a Latin manuscript on the passions by Anthony Ashley Cooper, the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671-1713). There are two parts, i) an introduction with commentary (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01916599.2012.679795), and ii) an edition of the Latin text with an English translation (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01916599.2012.679796) . The Pathologia treats of a series of topics concerning moral psychology, ethics and philology, presenting a reconstruction of the Stoic theory of the emotions that is closely modelled on Cicero and (...)

In this conceptual article, we look at the impact of culture on ethical decision making from a Douglasian Cultural Theory (CT) perspective. We aim to show how CT can be used to explain the diversity and dynamicity of ethical beliefs and behaviours found in every social system, be it a corporation, a nation or even an individual. We introduce CT in the context of ethical decision making and then use it to discuss examples of business ethics in the Indian business (...)

A problem in Schutz's theory of the historical sciences with an illustration from the women's liberation movement.Lester Embree - 2004 - Human Studies 27 (3):281-306.
In the first part of this essay it is contended that Schutz''s project is best called the philosophical theory of the cultural sciences; in the last parts it is shown that he offers satisfactory rudiments of a theory of the historical sciences except where the differentia specifica of those sciences is concerned. The central part is devoted to women''s liberation as a case of contemporary history in relation to which Schutz''s thought about the historical sciences needs correction.

Comment: Evolutionary Criteria for Considering an Emotion “Basic”: Jealousy as an Illustration.David M. Buss - 2014 - Emotion Review 6 (4):313-315.
Modern evolutionary psychology provides a cogent criterion for considering an emotion as “basic”: Whether the emotion evolved to solve an adaptive problem tributary to reproduction. Criteria such as distinctive universal signals, presence in other primates, or contribution to survival are not relevant, even though some basic emotions have these properties. Abundant evidence suggests that sexual jealousy is properly considered a basic emotion, even though it lacks a distinct expressive signature, contributes to adaptive problems of mating rather than survival, and may (...)

    Heisenberg's microscope—A misleading illustration.Chandrasekhar Roychoudhuri - 1978 - Foundations of Physics 8 (11-12):845-849.
According to the Rayleigh criterion of classical optics, the finite resolving power of a microscope is due to the width of the central peak of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern produced by the microscope's finite lens aperture. During the last few decades, theories and techniques for superresolution beyond the Rayleigh criterion have been developed in classical optics. Thus, Heisenberg's microscope could also in principle be made to give superresolution and thereby appear to violate the uncertainty relation. We believe that this paradox (...)

In this article, I criticize available democracy consolidation theories for assuming that the ontology of political structure and elite subjectivity are based upon historically transcendent a priori principles. In contrast to this assumption, I adopt a political field theory perspective to argue that concepts for comprehending the politics behind democracy consolidation must be reconstructed based on the history of conflicts among political actors over the meaning of politics. I demonstrate the significance of this insight for comprehending politics by empirically adopting (...)
