Nanomaterials have attracted much interest in the medical field and related applications as their distinct properties in the nanorange enable new and improved diagnosis and therapies. Owing to these properties and their potential interactions with the human body and the environment, the impact of nanomaterials on humans and their potential toxicity have been regarded a very significant issue. Consequently, nanomaterials are the subject of a wide range of cutting-edge research efforts in the medical and related fields to thoroughly probe their (...) potential beneficial utilizations and their more negative effects. We posit that the lack of standardization in the field is a serious shortcoming as it has led to the establishment of methods and results that do not ensure sufficient consistency and thus in our view can possibly result in research outputs that are not as robust as they should be. The main aim of this article is to present how NanoDiaRA, a large FP7 European multidisciplinary project that seeks to investigate and develop nanotechnology-based diagnostic systems, has developed and implemented robust, standardized methods to support research practices involving the engineering and manipulation of nanomaterials. First, to contextualize this research, an overview of the measures defined by different regulatory bodies concerning nanosafety is presented. Although these authorities have been very active in the past several years, many questions remain unanswered in our view. Second, a number of national and international projects that attempted to ensure more reliable exchanges of methods and results are discussed. However, the frequent lack of publication of procedures and protocols in research can often be a hindrance for sharing those good practices. Subsequently, the efforts made through NanoDiaRA to introduce standardized methods and techniques to support the development and utilization of nanomaterials are discussed in depth. A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with the partners of this project, and the interviews were analyzed thematically to highlight the determined efforts of the researchers to standardize their methods. Finally, some recommendations are made toward the setting up of well-defined methods to support the high-quality work of collaborative nanoparticle-based research and development projects and to enhance standardization processes. The article discusses research work of Heinrich Hofmann, who has completed doctoral studies in mathematics under Karl Weierstrass in Berlin. His first book "Philosophy of Arithmetic: Psychological and Logical Investigations With Supplementary Texts From 1887-1901" contains his thesis "In the Concept of Number: Psychological Analyses" completed in the guidance of Weierstrass.

In health care priority setting different criteria are used to reflect the relevant values that should guide decision-making. During recent years there has been a development of value frameworks implying the use of multiple criteria, a development that has not been accompanied by a structured conceptual and normative analysis of how different criteria relate to each other and to underlying normative considerations. Examples of such criteria are unmet need and severity. In this article these crucial criteria are conceptually clarified and (...) analyzed in relation to each other. We argue that disease-severity and condition-severity should be distinguished and we find the latter concept better reflects underlying normative values. We further argue that unmet need does not fulfil an independent and relevant role in relation to condition-severity except for in some limited situations when having to distinguish between conditions of equal severity. In Phenomena of Power, one of the leading figures of postwar German sociology reflects on the nature, and many forms of, power. For Heinrich Popitz, power is rooted in the human condition and is therefore part of all social relations. Drawing on philosophical anthropology, he identifies the elementary forms of power to provide detailed insight into how individuals gain and perpetuate control over others. Instead of striving for a power-free society, Popitz argues, humanity should try to impose limits on (...) power where possible and establish counterpower where necessary. Phenomena of Power delves into the sociohistorical manifestations of power and breaks through to its general structures. Popitz distinguishes the forms of the enforcement of power as well as of its stabilization and institutionalization, clearly articulating how the mechanisms of power work and how to track them in the social world. Philosophically trained, historically informed, and endowed with keen observation, Popitz uses examples ranging from the way passengers on a ship organize deck chairs to how prisoners of war share property to illustrate his theory. In a recent article, Mario Günther presented a conditional that is claimed to be connexive. The aim of this short discussion note is to show that Günther’s claim is not without problems.

Die vorliegende Arbeit fragt nach Formen autonomer Individualität, welche zugleich nicht hinter die postmoderne 'Auflösung des Subjekts' zurückgehen. Diese Problematik wird zunächst vor dem Hintergrund der Analyse von Friedrich Nietzsches Begriff des souveränen Individuums diskutiert. Hierbei werden neben der begrifflichen Analyse auch die Ergebnisse der Nietzscheforschung zum Thema behandelt. Um das Konzept souveräner Individualität aber auch weiter zu entwickeln, wird darüber hinaus ein Vergleich zu Foucaults Analyse der antiken Selbstsorge vorgenommen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Analyse werden daraufhin auf Probleme der aktuellen (...) Subjektphilosophie übertragen. Hierbei steht die Frage im Mittelpunkt, wie die Depotenzierung des Subjekts durch die Idee einer autonomen Individualität ergänzt werden kann. Neben dem erstmals vorgenommenen Vergleich zwischen Nietzsches und Foucaults Konzepten der Selbstsorge entwickelt Johannes Heinrich also auch den Begriff einer autonomen Identität, der bereits durch die dekonstruierende Kritik jüngster Subjekttheorien hindurchgegangen ist. Einführende Bemerkungen zu einem umstrittenen Begriff.

Jeremy Bentham gilt als Gründervater des Utilitarismus. Seine oftmals variierte Formel vom "größten Glück der größten Zahl" fehlt in kaum einem als Überblick angelegten Standardwerk der Moralphilosophie oder der politischen Ideengeschichte. Mit seiner materialreichen Studie liefert Wilhelm Hofmann die erste deutschsprachige Gesamtdarstellung der politisch-utilitaristischen Aufklärungsphilosophie des englischen Denkers. Ausgangsüberlegung seiner Rekonstruktion der politischen Theorie Benthams ist die These, dass sich an dessen Werk die paradigmatische Formulierung des Selbstverständnisses von Politik in modernen Gesellschaften ablesen lässt.

One posttranslational modification of p53, phosphorylation at Serine 46, selectively occurs after severe DNA damage and is envisioned as a marker of the cell death response. However, the molecular mechanism (...) of action of the p53 Ser46 phospho‐isomer, the molecular timing of this phosphorylation event, and its activating effects on apoptosis and ferroptosis still await exploration. In this essay, the current body of evidence on the molecular function of this deadly p53 mark, its evolutionary conservation, and the regulation of the key players of this response, the p53 Serine 46 kinases, are reviewed and dissected. Anton Wilhelm Amo (1703-1784) gilt als erster Philosoph afrikanischer Herkunft in Deutschland. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes stellen seine bewegte Biographie im Umfeld der Frühaufklärung in den Kontext von systematischen Überlegungen zu einer interkulturellen Philosophie. Mit der Untersuchung seiner Wirkungsgeschichte, der werkimmanenten Rekonstruktion seines Denkens und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem kolonialen Erbe der Philosophie leisten sie einen zentralen Beitrag zur Dekolonialisierung des Wissens.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the role of sociology in the field of corporate social responsibility. It presents a case study conducted by a research group consisting of two University partners in association with a Swiss SME. This project attempted to draw conclusions from a specific sociological consultancy research project on the general possibilities and opportunities of sociology in applied research and operational sustainability consulting. On the basis of the project findings, the article reflects on the extent (...) to which sociology could profitably intervene, on the limitations for sociological research and consultations in this field and on the conclusions that can be drawn for future analyses. Nuestro punto de partida es la concepción de Merleau-Ponty del lenguaje como "habla". Sostenemos que esta, como experiencia corporal del lenguaje -como lenguaje "en" nosotros-, permite comprender el fenómeno de la /nter-culturalidad como un fenómeno esencialmente /ntra-cultural, en el sentido de una experiencia de la cultura "desde dentro", es decir, desde la experiencia que cada quien hace del lenguaje. Este carácter endógeno e individual de pensar la cultura pone en evidencia, sin embargo, un "entre-lazamiento" recíproco originario entre lo propio y (...) lo extraño que impide de entrada privilegiar ya sea una visión universalista o totalizante o bien individualista o regionalista de la cultura. En dos momentos doy cuenta de este planteamiento: 1. Mundo de la vida y diversidad cultural y 2. El habla como lugar de acceso a las culturas. Our starting point is the conception in Merleau Ponty of language as "speech". We support this concept as corporal experience of language -as language "in" us - allows to understand the phenomenon of ¿nter-culturality as an essentially ¿ntra-cultural phenomenon, in the sense of an experience of culture "from within", that is to say; from the experience that everyone does with the language. This endogenous and individual character of thinking about culture highlights, however, a reciprocal "entanglement" originated among one's own and the strange that initially prevents to privilege, even a universal or totalizing or either an individualistic or regionalist vision of culture. Two moments I take on this approach: 1. World of life and cultural diversity. 2. Speech as an access place to the cultures. (shrink)

Such an answer to the question “What is to be done?” was not expected from this famous man, whose legendary (...) seminars on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit in the Thirties had inspired an entire generation of French scholars and intellectuals. Kojève's long-standing acquaintance, who looked after his guest during his stay in Berlin, was no less baffled to hear from the Hegelian that his next stop was Plettenberg. “Where else should one travel to in Germany? Hanna Heinrich entwickelt Analysekategorien, die die Kommunikationsmodi dieser Kunstform ebenso wie ihren gesellschaftstransformativen Anspruch philosophisch ergründen. Dazu bedient sie sich der ästhetischen Positionen G.W.F. Hegels, Friedrich Nietzsches, Martin Heideggers, Alain Badious und Michel Foucaults, die der Kunst große emanzipatorische und soziopolitische Kraft zusprechen sowie politischer Philosophien und Ethiken und zeigt damit auf: »Gelungene« Performances stellen sich als exemplarische Handlungsräume mit utopischem Potenzial der gegenwärtigen Entfremdung (...) entgegen und verweisen auf die (Mit-)Verantwortung und Freiheit jedes Einzelnen. Paru en 1909 dans les Kant-Studien, « Les deux voies de la théorie de la connaissance » constitue une pièce maîtresse du débat qui opposa le néokantisme à la phénoménologie naissante. Heinrich Rickert, qui fut avec Windelband et Lask l’un des principaux représentants de l’école néokantienne de Heidelberg, y expose de façon claire et synthétique les principes méthodiques qui fondent sa philosophie critique. À travers un dialogue constant avec les Recherches logiques de Husserl, Rickert distingue deux « voies » (...) ou deux méthodes que peut suivre la théorie de la connaissance : la méthode psychologico-transcendantale , correspondant à l’analyse de l’acte de juger, et la méthode logico-transcendantale , correspondant à l’analyse du sens propositionnel. Comment ces deux méthodes s’articulent-elles? Quelle est leur contribution propre au programme critique? Et quelles sont leurs limites respectives? Sur ces questions, la position de Rickert se révèle aussi riche et innovante que celle de Husserl, dont elle diffère sensiblement. L’aspect à la fois polémique et concis de ce texte en fait un document essentiel pour la connaissance de l’école de Heidelberg et, plus généralement, pour l’étude du néokantisme dans son ensemble. Mohr (Paul Siebeck), Tübingen 1939. - Das Werk, in dem Heinrich Rickert seine Lebensarbeit zusammenfassen wollte, ist sein "System der Philosophie." Der erste Band dieses Werkes enthält die "Allgemeine Grundlegung der Philosophie" (Tübingen, 1921). Der zweite Band sollte die "Philosophie des kontemplativen Lebens," der dritte die des "aktiven Lebens" behandeln. Der Umriß des Systems, der im ersten Bande mitunter vielleicht noch wie ein leeres Rahmen- und Fächerwerk wirken könnte, sollte nun (...) seine Brauchbarkeit zeigen. Er sollte angefüllt und bereichert werden durch sachhaltige Untersuchungen über die einzelnen Teilgebiete des philosophischen Systems. So war für den zweiten Band z. B. eine Wissenschaftslehre (Logik und Methodologie), eine Philosophie der Kunst (Ästhetik) und eine Behandlung der mystischen Religiosität geplant. Der dritte Band sollte vor allem die Sozialphilosophie enthalten; zur Sprache kommen sollte dabei zunächst das sittliche Leben in der "Gemeinschaft freier Personen" (Ethik), dann die über jede sittliche Verpflichtung noch hinausgehende Liebesgemeinschaft, wie sie z.B. in der Freundschaft und in der Ehe erlebt wird (Erotik), schließlich das religiöse Leben auf Grund persönlicher Gottesbegegnung. Druckfertig liegen für die inhaltliche Erfüllung und Ausgestaltung des Systems nur einige Aufsätze vor, die den zweiten Band eröffnen sollten: Rickert selbst hat noch den gesonderten Abdruck dieser Aufsätze geplant und ihre Anordnung genau festgelegt. Sein Plan wird im folgenden ausgeführt. Vorangestellt ist ein Zeitungsaufsatz über die Welt der Erfahrung, der in Kürze das Ziel der folgenden Untersuchungen teilweise sogar schon wörtlich vorwegnimmt. Da die Fehlurteile über Rickerts angeblich wirklichkeitsfremden Formalismus meistens nur darauf beruhen, dass man den Weg der Untersuchung mit ihrem Ziel, die Methode mit der Sache selbst verwechselt, so sei auf diesen kurzen Einleitungsaufsatz und dann namentlich auf den Abschnitt über Sprache und Antlitz der Körperwelt besonders hingewiesen. Despite the significant contribution of cognitive-behavioral therapy to effective treatment options for specific syndromes, treatment progress has been stagnating, with response rates plateauing over the past several years. This stagnation has led clinical researchers to call for an approach that instead focuses on processes of change and the individual in their particular context. Process-based therapy is a general approach representing a model of models, grounded in evolution science, with an emphasis on idiographic methods, network models of case conceptualization, and enhancing (...) wellbeing. In this paper, we describe the theory underlying PBT and present a case study for how to apply PBT tools and principles to deliver process-informed and person-centered evidence-based treatment. In addition, we discuss lessons learned from our case and provide suggestions for future considerations when implementing PBT in clinical settings. (shrink)
