We consider two-sided matching markets with couples. First, we extend a result by Klaus and Klijn (J Econ Theory 21: 75–106, 2005, Theorem 3.3) and show that for any weakly responsive couples market, there always exists a “double stable” matching, i.e., a matching that is stable for the couples market and for any associated singles market. Second, we show that for weakly responsive couples markets, the associated stable correspondence is (Maskin) monotonic and Nash implementable. Statements such as “X is beautiful but I don’t like how it looks” or “I like how X looks but it is not beautiful” sound contradictory. How contradictory they sound might however depend on the object X and on the aesthetic adjective being used (“beautiful”, “elegant”, “dynamic”, etc.). In our study, the first sentence was estimated to be more contradictory than the latter: If we describe something as beautiful, we often intend to evaluate its appearance, whereas it is less counterintuitive (...) to appreciate an appearance without finding it beautiful. Furthermore, statements including “beautiful” appeared more contradictory than those including “elegant” and “dynamic”, pointing to its greater evaluative component. When related to artworks, sentences could appear less contradictory due to readers’ consideration of the divergence between conventional beauty and art-related sensory pleasures that can even include negative valence. Such ambivalence might be more frequent in art-objects than in other artefacts. Indeed, in our study, sentences referring to artworks were estimated to be less contradictory compared to sentences referring to other artefacts. Meanwhile, an additional small group of graphic design students showed a less clear difference between art-related and non-art-related sentences. We discuss the potential influence of art experience and interest as well as theoretical and methodological challenges like the conceptualization of beauty. (shrink)

Das Recht von Patienten, selbst über ihre Behandlung zu bestimmen, erfährt in der Radioonkologie eine zunehmende Bedeutung. Damit verknüpft ist die Diskussion um Patientenverfügungen, die trotz großer allgemeiner Akzeptanz in der klinischen Praxis nur selten verwendet werden. Ziel dieser qualitativen Studie war es, die Einstellungen von Patienten, Ärzten und dem Pflegepersonal zur Mitbestimmung von Patienten bei aktuellen Therapieentscheidungen und gegenüber Patientenverfügungen zu untersuchen.Es wurden 15 Patienten, 7 Ärzte und 13 Pflegende einer radioonkologischen Universitätsklinik in halboffenen, leitfadengestützten Interviews zu folgenden Themen (...) befragt: Kenntnis von Patientenverfügungen, Vor- und Nachteile von Patientenverfügungen, Beteiligung von Patienten an aktuellen Therapieentscheidungen, Gründe für eine Nicht-Beteiligung an Therapieentscheidungen. Die Interviews wurden mit der Methode der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet.Bei Patienten kann hinsichtlich ihres Wunsches nach Beteiligung bei Therapieentscheidungen zwischen einer „aktiven“ und einer „passiven“ Gruppe differenziert werden. Ärzte und Pflegepersonal betonen die hohe psychische und körperliche Belastung der Patienten durch Diagnosemitteilung und Therapie. Patientenverfügungen werden generell positiv bewertet und als Mittel zur Ausübung der Selbstbestimmung von Patienten verstanden. Jedoch sehen Patienten selbst im fortgeschrittenen Krankheitsverlauf nur selten die Notwendigkeit, eine Patientenverfügung zu erstellen. In der radioonkologischen Praxis kommunizieren Patienten und Ärzte nur selten über Patientenverfügungen.Aussagefähige Patientenverfügungen setzen eine rechtzeitige und angemessene Kommunikation über Krankheitsverlauf und Therapieoptionen zwischen Arzt und Patient voraus. In dem untersuchten radioonkologischen Behandlungssetting haben Patientenverfügungen nur eine begrenzte praktische Bedeutung. (shrink)

In both the public and the business world, in academe as well as in practice, the ideas of Adam Smith are regarded as the bedrock of modern economics. When present economic conditions and management practices are criticised, Adam Smith is referred to by defenders and detractors of the current status quo alike. Smith, it is believed, defined the essential terms of reference of these debates, such as the rational pursuit of self-interest on part of the individual and the resultant optimal (...) allocation of goods in free markets thanks to the workings of an “invisible hand.” In this article, we question whether this standard view of Smith, the economist, is tenable. We provide an extensive review of the extant secondary literature from economists, business ethicists, and philosophers, comparing their assessments to crucial elements of Smith’s theoretical system. As a result, we show that Smith, far from being an advocate of a value-free or even value-averse conception of economic transactions, stood for a virtue-based and values-oriented model of business. Accordingly, we argue current management education and the pedagogy of business ethics ought to be changed, and certain strategic conclusions drawn for business practice. (shrink)

This paper details the content and structure of the folk concept of life, and discusses its relevance for scientific research on life. In four empirical studies, we investigate which features of life are considered salient, universal, central, and necessary. Functionings, such as nutrition and reproduction, but not material composition, turn out to be salient features commonly associated with living beings (Study 1). By contrast, being made of cells is considered a universal feature of living species (Study 2), a central aspect (...) of life (Study 3), and our best candidate for being necessary for life (Study 4). These results are best explained by the hypothesis that people take life to be a natural kind subject to scientific scrutiny. (shrink)

This volume explores the reorganisation of knowledge taking place in the course of Galileo's research process extending over a period of more than thirty years, pursued within a network of exchanges with his contemporaries, and documented by a vast collection of research notes. It has revealed the challenging objects that motivated and shaped Galileo's thinking and closely followed the knowledge reorganization engendered by theses challenges. It has thus turned out, for example, that the problem of reducing the properties of pendulum (...) motion to the laws governing naturally accelerated motion on inclined planes was the mainspring for the formation of Galileo's comprehensive theory of naturally accelerated motion. Ernst Cassirers 1932 erschienene Darstellung der »Philosophie der Aufklärung« zählt zu den herausragenden Standardwerken zur Bestimmung der Leitgedanken der Epoche. »Die eigentliche ›Philosophie‹ der Aufklärung ist und bleibt«, so Cassirer, »etwas anderes als der Inbegriff dessen, was ihre führenden Denker [...] gedacht und gelehrt haben«. In philosophy of science, the literature on abduction and the literature on styles of thinking have existed almost totally in parallel. Here, for the first time, we bring them together and explore their mutual relevance. What is the consequence of the existence of several styles of scientific thinking for abduction? Can abduction, as a general creative mode of inference, have distinct characteristic forms within each style? To investigate this, firstly, we present the concept of abduction; secondly we analyze what is (...) understood by styles of thinking; thirdly, we give some comments on abduction and styles of thinking by analyzing examples of scientific discovery or innovation within each style. We develop a case-based comparative investigation of creative aspects of abductive reasoning with examples drawn from different styles of scientific thinking and doing as understood by the Crombie/hacking tradition. We argue that abduction, as a general mode of reasoning, can have a variety of specific expressions enabled and constrained by the styles of scientific thinking. Finally, we draw some conclusions on the relationship between abduction and styles of thinking suggesting that scientific discovery is a dynamical goal-directed activity within the scientific community that benefits from distinct styles of thinking and doing research. Over the last decades, network-based approaches have become highly popular in diverse areas of biology. While these approaches continue to grow very rapidly, some of their conceptual and methodological aspects still require a programmatic foundation. In order to unify and systematize network approaches across biological sciences, this theme issue brings together scientists working in many diverse areas of biological sciences as well as philosophers working on foundational issues of network explanations and modelling, who together aim to develop universally applicable norms (...) of network explanations, as well as systematize network concepts, such as levels and hierarchies. We construct a new measure of voting power that yields reasonable measurements even if the individual votes are not cast independently. Our measure hinges on probabilities of counterfactuals, such as the probability that the outcome of a collective decision would have been yes, had a voter voted yes rather than no as she did in the real world. The probabilities of such counterfactuals are calculated on the basis of causal information, following the approach by Balke and Pearl. Opinion leaders whose (...) votes have causal influence on other voters' votes can have significantly more voting power under our measure. But the new measure of voting power is also sensitive to the voting rule. We show that our measure can be regarded as an average treatment effect, we provide examples in which it yields intuitively plausible results and we prove that it reduces to Banzhaf voting power in the limiting case of independent and equiprobable votes. Single-pulse and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation are used in clinical practice for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. However, rTMS-based therapies that lead to a significant and sustained reduction in neuropsychiatric symptoms remain scarce. While it is generally accepted that the stimulation frequency plays a crucial role in producing the therapeutic effects of rTMS, less attention has been dedicated to determining the role of the electric field strength. Conventional threshold-based intensity selection approaches, such as the resting motor threshold, produce variable stimulation intensities (...) and electric fields across participants and cortical regions. Insufficient standardization of electric field strength may contribute to the variability of rTMS effects and thus therapeutic success. Computational approaches that can prospectively optimize the electric field and standardize it across patients and cortical targets may overcome some of these limitations. Here, we discuss these approaches and propose that electric field standardization will be instrumental for translational science frameworks aimed at deciphering the subcellular, cellular, and network mechanisms of rTMS. Advances in understanding these mechanisms will be important for optimizing rTMS-based therapies in psychiatry. (shrink)

Das „Handbuch Verantwortung“ vermittelt einen Überblick über Themen, Positionen und die bisherigen einschlägigen Arbeiten in der deutsch- und englischsprachigen Verantwortungsforschung. Es befasst sich mit Geschichte und Etymologie der Verantwortung und schildert, inwiefern der Verantwortungsbegriff zum Grundvokabular des ethischen Denkens gehört. So wird die Verantwortung historisch und genealogisch lokalisiert und ein Fundament für den wissenschaftlichen Austausch geschaffen. Wann immer von Verantwortung die Rede ist, spielen Begriffe wie Freiheit, Zurechnung, Schuld oder Pflicht eine wesentliche Rolle, da durch sie der Verantwortungsbegriff definiert wird. (...) Diese und andere Begriffe werden in dem Handbuch thematisiert und sortiert. Darüber hinaus werden nicht nur unterschiedlichen Typen und Arten der Verantwortung behandelt, wie z.B. die individuelle und kollektive Verantwortung. Der Leser wird auch mit den wichtigsten Handlungsbereichen der Verantwortung vertraut gemacht, zu denen u.a. die politische und ethische Verantwortung gehören, aber auch die Rolle des Verantwortungsprinzips in Erziehung, Medien, Technik und Wissenschaft. Und nicht zuletzt steht in dem Handbuch die praktische Seite der Verantwortung im Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit. Was verstand man unter Wissen im 17. Jahrhundert? Welche Ideal des Wissens und welche Kriterien des Wissens wurden formuliert, wie konkurrierten diese Konzepte miteinander, wie und warum wurden einige etabliert, andere nicht? Welche notwendigen und hinreichenden Bedingungen sollten erfüllt sein, damit einer Person Wissen zugeschrieben werden, und welchen Methoden wurden vorgeschlagen, um zu überprüfen, ob Wissensansprüche zu Recht bestehen? Dieser Sammelband vereinigt exemplarische Fallstudien international bekannter Spezialisten in der Erforschung der frühen Neuzeit, die das übliche Verständnis der Beziehung von Wissensidealen (...) und Wissenskulturen unterlaufen. Zumindest in der frühen Neuzeit wurden Wissensideale weitgehend "im Rahmen" bestimmter Wissenskontexte formuliert und auf diese Weise in eine Historisierung hineingezogen. Außerdem waren die verschiedensten Wissensformen, z. B. wissenschaftliche Projekte, politische Entwürfe, konfessionelle Vorstellungen, ästhetische Konzeptionen und autobiographische Selbstbilder auf das Engste miteinander verflochten. Die Beiträge im interdisziplinär angelegten Band betrachten anhand ausgewählter und historisch wichtiger Fälle aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln verschiedene "Methoden" des Erwerbs, der Begründung, Organisation, Darstellung, Anwendung und Vermittlung von Wissen im Europa des 17. Acceptable programming systems have many nice properties like s-m-n-Theorem, Composition and Kleene Recursion Theorem. Those properties are sometimes called control structures, to emphasize that they yield tools to implement programs in programming systems. It has been studied, among others by Riccardi and Royer, how these control structures influence or even characterize the notion of acceptable programming system. The following is an investigation, how these control structures behave in the more general setting of complete numberings as defined by Mal'cev and Eršov.

Die Lebenskunstliteratur boomt. Nicht nur in der Wissenschaft stößt sie auf zunehmendes Interesse, sondern auch und vor allem in der breiten Öffentlichkeit. Mit Fug und Recht läßt sich daher behaupten, daß sie nicht nur die jüngste Gestalt der in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wiedererwachten Praktischen Philosophie ist, sondern auch Symptom eines verbreiteten lebensethischen Orientierungsbedürfnisses. Der Band unternimmt, was diese Situation verlangt: eine philosophisch angemessene Kritik der Lebenskunst im Sinne der Anspruchsüberführung und Grenzziehung. In his Guide to the Lakes (1810, 1835), the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth used the word 'nature' in two senses. Sometimes it denoted a holistic ideal, in the manner of metaphysicians, and sometimes a concrete landscape of discrete things, in the manner of natural scientists. The Guide to the Lakes thus marks a watershed in Western philosophy of nature. Although chronologically the ideal preceded the concrete landscape, conceptually the concrete landscape precedes the ideal, much as in Nietzsche's 'fiction of (...) causation'. (shrink)

Sie widmen sich zum 200jährigen Jubiläum ihres Erscheinens den Reden über die Religion, Friedrich Schleiermachers frühem religionsphilosophischem Hauptwerk. Schleiermachers Reden über die Religion stehen im Spannungsfeld von Spätaufklärung und Idealismus, Theologie und Frühromantik. Die Beiträge befassen sich sowohl mit problemgeschichtlichen Fragen als auch mit theoretischen Perspektiven. Geistphilosophie, Ethik und Kulturtheorie bilden den systematischen Rahmen des Religionsbegriffs. Die thematische Vielfalt der Motive, die in den Reden anklingen, erschließt (...) sich daher nur der interdisziplinären Forschung - eine Einsicht, deren fruchtbare Ergebnisse der Kongreßband vorführt.
