    The axiomatization of physical theories.Herbert A. Simon - 1970 - Philosophy of Science 37 (1):16-26.
The task of axiomatizing physical theories has attracted, in recent years, some interest among both empirical scientists and logicians. However, the axiomatizations produced by either one of these two groups seldom appear satisfactory to the members of the other. It is the purpose of this paper to develop an approach that will satisfy the criteria of both, hence permit us to construct axiomatizations that will meet simultaneously the standards and needs of logicians and of empirical scientists.

  19. Does scientific discovery have a logic?Herbert A. Simon - 1973 - Philosophy of Science 40 (4):471-480.
It is often claimed that there can be no such thing as a logic of scientific discovery, but only a logic of verification. By 'logic of discovery' is usually meant a normative theory of discovery processes. The claim that such a normative theory is impossible is shown to be incorrect; and two examples are provided of domains where formal processes of varying efficacy for discovering lawfulness can be constructed and compared. The analysis shows how one can treat operationally and formally (...)

  20. The Data of Ethics.Herbert Spencer - 2012 - Cambridge University Press.
Herbert Spencer, Victorian philosopher, biologist, sociologist and political theorist, one of the founders of Social Darwinism and author of the phrase 'survival of the fittest', was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1902, losing out to Theodor Mommsen. Spencer left his post at The Economist in 1857 to focus on writing his ten-volume System of Synthetic Philosophy, a work that offers an ethics-based guide to human conduct to replace that provided by conventional religious belief. Published in 1879, (...)

  23. Cause and counterfactual.Herbert A. Simon & Nicholas Rescher - 1966 - Philosophy of Science 33 (4):323-340.
It is shown how a causal ordering can be defined in a complete structure, and how it is equivalent to identifying the mechanisms of a system. Several techniques are shown that may be useful in actually accomplishing such identification. Finally, it is shown how this explication of causal ordering can be used to analyse causal counterfactual conditionals. First the counterfactual proposition at issue is articulated through the device of a belief-contravening supposition. Then the causal ordering is used to provide modal (...)

    Idealized and Industrialized Labor: Anatomy of a Feminist Controversy.Jane Clare Jones - 2012 - Hypatia 27 (1):99-117.
Prompted by the ever-increasing cesarean rate, this paper considers the interpretive disjunct between two significant strands of feminist analysis that have arisen in the last four decades as a consequence of the phenomenon of medicalized birth. In contrast to the dominant paradigm of bioethical “Principalism,” both modes of analysis, understood as “the critique of industrialized labor” and “the critique of idealized labor,” are attentive to the way in which social discourses inform bioethical deliberation and practice, but significantly diverge in the (...)

Hegels praktische Philosophie: ein Kommentar der Texte in der Reihenfolge ihrer Entstehung.Herbert Schnädelbach - 2000 - Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp. Edited by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
Alle (...)

Sprache als Thema und Medium der Philosophie.Herbert Schnädelbach - 2007 - Zeitschrift für Kulturphilosophie 2007 (1):27-44.
When people speak today of »postanalytic philosophy«, it seems as if the linguistic turn that analytical philosophy since Russell and Wittgenstein completed, has been taken back and reputiated, and in fact the return to a »pure«, i.e. prelogical and pre-linguistic consciousness of facts has gained new attractiveness. On the other hand, we must insist that for philosophy language is not only the primary issue, but also the medium that cannot go behind. This can be shown by criticism of the traditional (...)

    Regression zum Träumen.Herbert Will - 2021 - Psyche 75 (7):561-591.

Tragedy and the paradox of the fortunate fall.Herbert Weisinger - 1953 - [East Lansing] Michigan,: Michigan State College Press.
First published in 1953, Tragedy and the Paradox of the Fortunate Fall argues that our response to tragedy is made up of a series of responses: the impact of experience which produces the archetypes of belief; the formation of the archetype of rebirth; the crystallization of the archetype of rebirth in the myth and ritual of the ancient Near East; the transformation of myth and ritual in the religions of the ancient world, including Christianity; the formalization of the archetype of (...)
