El 25 de agosto de 1769, Johann Caspar Lavater envió a Moses Mendelssohn una dedicatoria junto con la traducción de algunas secciones de La palingénésie philosophique, de Charles Bonnet. En esta dedicatoria, Lavater desafió a Mendelssohn a refutar públicamente los argumentos de Bonnet sobre la verdad del cristianismo o, en caso contrario, “hacer lo que Sócrates habría hecho si hubiera leído esta obra y la hubiera encontrado irrefutable”. En su réplica a Lavater, Mendelssohn interpreta este desafío como (...) un llamado a la conversión. For decades a debate has played out in the literature about who bioethicists are, what they do, whether they can be considered professionals qua bioethicists, and, if so, what professional responsibilities they are called to uphold. Health care ethics consultants are bioethicists who work in health care settings. They have been seeking guidance documents that speak to their special relationships/duties toward those they serve. By approving a Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibilities for Health Care Ethics Consultants, the American Society (...) for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) has moved the professionalization debate forward in a significant way. This first code of ethics focuses on individuals who provide health care ethics consultation (HCEC) in clinical settings. The evolution of the code's development, implications for the field of HCEC and bioethics, and considerations for future directions are presented here. (shrink)

The Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs of the American Medical Association examines physicians’ professional ethical responsibility in the event that the security of patients’ electronic records is breached.

Self-serving hegemonic visions of history are institutionalized by dominant memory entrepreneurs, simultaneously imposing an authoritative version of “what happened” and their right to articulate it. These visions and the hierarchies of honour they consecrate are cultivated trans-generationally, aiming to ensure the community’s political cohesion, as well as the emotional attachments that can ensure its reproduction over time. This paper has three objectives. First, it brings insights from social epistemology to bear on a conceptualization of political memory-making and proposes the concepts (...) of “hermeneutical dissidence” and “hermeneutical seduction” to capture the critical interrogation of such mythologies. It highlights the obstacles facing any attempt at subverting them, particularly given the resilience of cognitive and emotional investments in particular schemas of perception and understanding in relation to the boundaries of the community and its history. Second, I transplant the descriptive concept of “affair” formulated by pragmatic sociologists into debates about political memory, infusing it with a dose of normativity in order to shed critical light on various types of hermeneutical dissidence from dominant, emotionally anchored, exclusionary imaginaries. Third, to render the theoretical proposal concrete, I introduce two “memory affairs,” both triggered by debates over the meaning and gender of political resistance. (shrink)

This book addresses the metaphysics of Armstrongian states of affairs, i.e. instantiations of naturalist universals by particulars. The author argues that states of affairs are the best candidate for truthmakers and, in the spirit of logical atomism, that we need no molecular truthmakers for positive truths. In the book's context, this has the pleasing result that there are no molecular states of affairs. Following this account of truthmaking, the author first shows that the particulars in (first-order) states of affairs are (...) bare particulars. He then argues that the properties in states of affairs are simple, non-relational and concrete universals. Next, he argues that (material) relations in states of affairs are external relations. Lastly, he argues that a state of affairs is unified by a distinctive formal relation without giving rise to Bradley’s regress. (shrink)

En 2008, l’audition à l’Assemblée nationale est imposée à Bernard Tapie, homme d’affaires, à la suite du scandale Crédit lyonnais. Elle traite de la décision de verser à Tapie une somme avoisinant 390 millions d’euros, dont – et c’est le point qui indigne le plus le public et les députés – 45 millions d’euros de préjudice moral prélevés sur le trésor public. Les députés abordent toutes les accusations relatives à l’affaire, mettant l’accent sur le manque de morale du personnage. Tapie (...) doit justifier la décision de l’arbitrage et redorer son image. Pour ce faire, il fait appel à une panoplie de stratégies, dont des arguments éthiques. Que peut-on apprendre de ces interactions au cœur d’un des scandales français les plus retentissants de la décennie – en particulier sur la façon dont chaque acteur cherche à gérer sa propre image? What is it about you in virtue of which you are having the thoughts you are now having? The answer will no doubt make some appeal to the state your brain is now in. Most philosophers, however, claim that this is only part of the answer; many of the facts that determine your thoughts lie outside your skin. This view is called externalism, and in this book Keith L. Butler argues that, contrary to widespread philosophical opinion, externalism is very implausible. (...) Through critical evaluation of a vast amount of philosophical work on the subject, Butler shows that externalism faces problematic epistemological implications (regarding self-knowledge and knowledge of the external world), and problematic metaphysical implications (regarding mental causation). Moreover, externalism derives no support from an appeal to the cognitive sciences. The controversy generated by this book bears on issues in the philosophy of mind, language, science, and epistemology. In this paper the importance of public affairs management in multinational corporations in India will be examined. After briefly discussing the state of the art in international business and society literature, a conceptual framework for public affairs management in multinational corporations will be developed. This framework serves as the theoretical basis for an empirical study among German multinational corporations in India. Dispositif non pas d’exposition mais de communication, la « Konkomba Memory Box » est présentée simultanément dans une localité konkomba, à Nawaré au Togo, et au Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum à Cologne, dans le cadre de l’exposition « Resist – Die Kunst des Widerstands (L’art de la résistance) », du 6 novembre 2020 au 14 avril 2021. Ce cadre muséal hors-les-murs n’est pas simplement le réceptacle des informations collectées au cours d’une enquête sur l’actualité du passé colonial, et notamment de sa violence, (...) mais il est aussi l’outil d’une exploration, dont la forme est élaborée, appropriée, discutée et recomposée par l’ensemble des participants, et surtout, par ceux qui aujourd’hui, font leur ce récit. L’affaire des « pouces coupés » illustre bien cette démarche. Il s’agit du débat sur la restitution d’un membre fantôme, celui du pouce de la main droite des archers konkomba dont les descendants actuels affirment qu’il a été amputé par les milices coloniales allemandes (Von Massow) puis françaises (Massu). There is, on the one hand, need to restate clearly the precise sense of my interpretation of the condemnation of Galilee and of its magisterial value, by showing that the main thesis which has been attributed to me - that of an infallible character of the declaration of heresy contained in the abjuration of Galileo - is not found in (...) my writings. On the other hand, it must be shown that the objections put forward against my real theses have no historical foundation, due to an insufficient knowledge of the style of the Roman Holy Office on the part of the authors of the article mentioned.
