This is a systematic philosophical and conceptual study of the notion of a social practice. Raimo Tuomela explains social practices in terms of the interlocking mental states of the agents; he shows how social practices are 'building blocks of society'; and he offers a clear and powerful account of the way in which social institutions are constructed from these building blocks as established, interconnected sets of social practices with a special new social status. His analysis is based on the novel (...) concept of shared 'we-attitudes', which represent a weak form of collective intentionality, and he makes instructive connections to major topics and figures in philosophy and the social sciences. His book will be of interest to a wide range of readers in philosophy of mind, philosophy of social science, psychology and sociology, and artificial intelligence. (shrink)

One of John Dewey’s goals as a philosopher was to rescue his discipline from the epistemological deadlocks centered about the concept of essence, or as he might have put it, to disengage philosophy from its excessive concern with the fixed and the sure. In order to do this he stressed the contextual aspect of philosophical construction, and, so some claim, undercut belief in the existence of an a priori realm of essence determining activity. The purpose of this paper is to (...) point out that this is not the case. My procedure will be: to present Dewey’s understanding of the causes for the epistemological deadlocks in philosophy’s past; to present the implications of this understanding and its effect upon philosophical method; to present the metaphysical implications of the first two points. I hope to make it clear that Dewey recognized the existence of something prior to an experienced context which limited its possibilities and that there is validity to an inquiry into this something prior to an experienced context. Audi defends his views in epistemology against the challenges raised by Laurence BonJour, Timothy Williamson, and William Alston in Part II, “Knowledge, Justification, and Acceptance.” Specifically, Audi addresses his concerns about the sorts of beliefs that can be noninferentially justified, the sense in which the grounds of justification may be internal, and the range of attitudes that admit of justification and rationality.

This paper explores the possibility that testimony is an a priori source, even if not a basic source, of rational support for certain kinds of cognitions, particularly for a kind of acceptance that it is natural to call presumption. The inquiry is conducted in the light of two important distinctions and the relation between them. One distinction is between belief and acceptance, the other between justification and rationality. Cognitive acceptance is also distinguished from behavioral acceptance, and (...) their normative status is shown to be governed by quite different principles. A major focus in the paper is the question of how the epistemic authority of testimony for cognitive acceptance of its content may depend on normative elements implicit in the kind of language learning and social coordination that are normal for at least the majority of human beings. On a wide range of measures and across cultures and societies, women tend to be more religious than men. Religious beliefs are associated with evolved social-cognitive mechanisms such as agency detection and theory-of-mind. Women perform better on most of these components of social cognition, suggesting an underlying psychological explanation for these sex differences. The Existential Orientation Scale was developed to extend the measurement of religion to include non-religious beliefs. Factor analysis extracted two dimensions: religious orientation and science acceptance. This (...) new scale was used to investigate the hypothesis that the dimensions of empathizing, a measure of social cognition, and systemizing can explain the sex differences in religious orientation. The sex differences in both religious orientation and science acceptance disappeared when empathizing and systemizing were entered. This indicates that underlying dimensions of individual differences can explain existential orientation better than being male or female. (shrink)

Adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) was identified in 1970 as the transmitter responsible for non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neurotransmission in the gut and bladder and the term ‘purinergic’ was coined. Purinergic cotransmission was proposed in 1976 and ATP is now recognized as a cotransmitter in all nerves in the peripheral and central nervous systems. P1 (adenosine) and P2 (ATP) receptors were distinguished in 1978. Cloning of these receptors in the early 1990s was a turning point in the acceptance of the purinergic signalling hypothesis. (...) There are both short-term purinergic signalling in neurotransmission, neuromodulation and secretion and long-term (trophic) purinergic signalling of cell proliferation, differentiation and death in development and regeneration. Much is known about the mechanisms of ATP release and its breakdown by ectonucleotidases. Recently, there has been emphasis on purinergic pathophysiology, including neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. Purinergic therapeutic strategies are being developed for treatment of gut, kidney, bladder, lung, skeletal and reproductive system disorders, pain and cancer. (shrink)

This paper concentrates on a debate over dispersion in the second half of the 1830s, in which both sides utilized the same set of experimental data to test a proposed wave account of dispersion, but could not agree on how these data should be used. The conflict regarding experimental data was caused by differences in instruments. In the debate, optical instruments in many ways functioned like paradigms, shaping scientists' opinions. Instruments also led the debate into an impasse, because no apparatus (...) was available for the necessary experimental replication. Because of unreconcilable differences regarding experimental evidence, the wave theory's failure in explaining dispersion did not become an obstacle to its acceptance. (shrink)

The problems we deal with concern reasoning about incomplete knowledge. Knowledge is understood as ability of an ideal rational agent to make decisions about pieces of information. The formalisms we are particularly interested in are Moore's autoepistemic logic (AEL) and its variant, the logic of acceptance and rejection (AEL2). It is well-known that AEL may be seen as the nonmonotonic KD45 modal logic. The aim is to give an appropriate modal formalization for AEL2.

This paper sketches a way of supplementing classical mathematics with a motivation for a Brouwerian theory of free choice sequences. The idea is that time is unending, i.e. that one can never come to an end of it, but also indeterminate, so that in a branching time model only one branch represents the ‘actual’ one. The branching can be random or subject to various restrictions imposed by the creating subject. The fact that the underlying mathematics is classical makes such perhaps (...) delicate issues as the fan theorem no longer problematic. On this model, only intuitionistic logic applies to the Brouwerian free choice sequences, and there it applies not because of any skepticism about classical mathematics, but because there is no ‘end of time’ from the standpoint of which everything about the sequences can be decided. In 1983, Dr. J. Robin Warren and Dr. Barry Marshall reported finding a new kind of bacteria in the stomachs of people with gastritis. Warren and Marshall were soon led to the hypothesis that peptic ulcers are generally caused, not by excess acidity or stress, but by a bacterial infection. Initially, this hypothesis was viewed as preposterous, and it is still somewhat controversial. In 1994, however, a U. S. National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Panel concluded that infection appears to (...) play an important contributory role in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcers, and recommended that antibiotics be used in their treatment. Peptic ulcers are common, affecting up to 10% of the population, and evidence has mounted that many ulcers can be cured by eradicating the bacteria responsible for them. (shrink)

Generic statements (e.g., “Birds lay eggs”) express generalizations about categories. In this paper, we hypothesized that there is a paradoxical asymmetry at the core of generic meaning, such that these sentences have extremely strong implications but require little evidence to be judged true. Four experiments confirmed the hypothesized asymmetry: Participants interpreted novel generics such as “Lorches have purple feathers” as referring to nearly all lorches, but they judged the same novel generics to be true given a wide range of prevalence (...) levels (e.g., even when only 10% or 30% of lorches had purple feathers). A second hypothesis, also confirmed by the results, was that novel generic sentences about dangerous or distinctive properties would be more acceptable than generic sentences that were similar but did not have these connotations. In addition to clarifying important aspects of generics’ meaning, these findings are applicable to a range of real-world processes such as stereotyping and political discourse. (shrink)

How Non-being Haunts Being explores the many different modes of absence and non-being that pervade life, language, thought, and culture. A highly readable book of great interest to a wide audience, it ensures that readers will never think of life, death, or themselves, the same way again.

A model of inductive inquiry is defined within the context of first‐order logic. The model conceives of inquiry as a game between Nature and a scientist. To begin the game, a nonlogical vocabulary is agreed upon by the two players, along with a partition of a class of countable structures for that vocabulary. Next, Nature secretly chooses one structure from some cell of the partition. She then presents the scientist with a sequence of facts about the chosen structure. With each (...) new datum the scientist announces a guess about the cell to which the chosen structure belongs. To succeed in his or her inquiry, the scientist’s successive conjectures must be correct all but finitely often, that is, the conjectures must converge in the limit to the correct cell. Different kinds of scientists can be investigated within this framework. At opposite ends of the spectrum are dumb scientists that rely on the strategy of “induction by enumeration,” and smart scientists that rely on an operator of belief revision. We report some results about the scope and limits of these two inductive strategies. (shrink)

사진은 사진의 발명 이전의 이미지들과 비교할 때, 무엇을 지시하고 있는지가 너무나 명확하게 드러나 있는 것처럼 보여서, 이미지를 생산한 사람의 의도가 그 이면에 숨겨져 있을 여지가 없는 것으로 여겨졌다. 다시 말해 사진 역시 전통적 그림과 같은 이차원 평면의 이미지이긴 하지만, 전통적 그림의 의미가 다의적(konnotativ)일 수 있는 것과 달리, 사진은 마치 숫자처럼 그 지시대상이 명확한 일의적(denotativ) 이미지로 간주되어왔다. 이는 예술적 측면에서는 특히 회화와 비교되며 폄하되는 요소로 작용해 왔고, 기술적 측면에서는 때때로 과장되게 수용되어 사진을 마치 세상을 투영하고 있는 창문처럼 여기게 하는 근거가 되어왔다.BR빌렘 (...) 플루서(Vilém Flusser)는 이러한 현상에 대해 사진을 전통적 그림과 동일한 존재 층위에 위치시킨 결과로 인한 오해라고 보았다. 이는 이미지와 실재라는 관계항 속에서 새로운 이미지인 사진에 대해, 새로운 존재론적 질문이 제기되어야 함을 의미하는 것이라 하겠다. 기존의 사진 이론들이 사진에 대해 ‘어떻게 실제적으로 사진이 존재하는가’라던지, 혹은 ‘하나의 보편적인 사진 언어가 존재하는가’와 같은 질문에 집중해왔던 것 모두, 사진 의미의 일의성이라는 특징이 전제되어 있기 때문이며, 이러한 전제는 사진이 그 원본과의 관계, 즉 지표성(Indexikalität)이라는 관점에서 해석되어 왔음을 보여주는 예라 하겠다.BR그러나 플루서는 이러한 방식의 사진 이해에 비판적 견해를 가지고서, 사진을 지표성의 관점에서가 아니라, 현상학적 관점에서 관찰하고자 하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 사진을 통한 새로운 철학적 방법론을 모색하고자 하였다. 이는 후설의 현상학적 개념, 예를 들어 지향성이나 판단중지와 같은 개념들을 자신의 사진 철학에 수용함으로써 이뤄졌다.BR이에 본고는 ‘사진 촬영자의 몸짓(fotografische Geste)’ 개념을 통해 플루서가 사진을 지표성이라는 관점에서 벗어나, 어떻게 후설의 현상학에 접목시키고 있는지에 대해서 분석함으로써, 플루서에 의해 시도된 사진에 대한 새로운 철학적 해석에 대해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 조선후기 일군의 학자들은 도가철학을 인식의 틀로 활용하여 서양과학을 수용하고 이해하였다. 사실 도가의 기철학은 동양의 전통 과학과 천문학이 형성ㆍ발전하는 과정에서 사상적 원류로 기능하여 왔으며, 서양과학 수용과정에서 서양과학에 상응하는 학문으로 인식되었다. 대표적으로 조선후기 이익의 우주론과 서명응의 선천역학, 홍대용의 과학적 세계관은 도가의 기철학을 인식 기반으로 자연 세계에 대한 인식 전환을 시도한 사례들이다. 그리고 자연에 대한 이들의 인식 전환은 현실질서의 변화에 대한 요구로 이어졌다. 특히 성리학적 도덕원리와 도가의 기철학이 절충된 형태인 이익의 우주론에서 서양의 천문과학은 기철학의 주요 개념에 대응하여 설명되어졌다. 이와 같은 이익의 우주론은 과학의 (...) 영역뿐만 아니라 사회, 정치의 측면에도 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 그는 중화의 위상을 보편적인 것으로 인정하면서도, 조선의 상대주의적 주체성을 주장하였다. 그리고 정치에서는 객관적 황로정치의 도입을 주장하는 법치주의적 정치사상을 논의하였다. 도가철학은 서양과학을 이해하는 해석의 틀로서만 기능한 것이 아니라 실학에도 중대한 영향을 미쳤다. 도가 기철학은 탈이념적이고 실증적인 사유에, 인식 상대주의는 탈중화주의와 주체성의 자각에 기여하였다. 홍대용과 북학파의 실학은 이러한 도가철학의 영향을 가장 많이 받은 것이다. In a 2022 paper, Hamami claimed that the orthodox view in mathematics is that a proof is rigorous if it can be translated into a derivation. Hamami then developed a descriptive account that explains how mathematicians check proofs for rigor in this sense and how they develop the capacity to do so. By exploring introductory texts in computability theory, we demonstrate that Hamami’s descriptive account does not accord with actual mathematical practice with respect to computability theory. We argue instead for (...) an alternative account in which imagination, anticipation, and interpretations of natural language play roles in establishing mathematical rigor. (shrink)
