Διεξήχθη αρχαιοζωολογική ανάλυση στο Ηράκλειο της Θάσου με σκοπό τη συγκριτική έρευνα αφ' ενός των γραπτών μαρτυριών σχετικά με το "τελετουργικό τυπικό του Πρυτανείου" και αφ' ετέρου των αρχαιολογικών δεδομένων που προήλθαν από τις πρόσφατες ανασκαφές, οι οποίες έφεραν στο φως, μέσα σε καθαρή στρωματογραφική συνάφεια, καλά χρονολογημένη κεραμεική μαζί με άφθονα και καλά διατηρημένα οστά. Τα αποτελέσματα φανερώνουν ότι στην αρχαϊκή εποχή έδειχναν σεβασμό προς το τυπικό ή τουλάχιστον προς τις διαιτητικές του απαγορεύσεις και προς τον τρόπο του κομμα- (...) τιάσματος των ειδωλόθυτων, όπως αυτό προδιέγραψε, αλλά δεν συνέβαινε το ίδιο και κατά τις μεταγενέστερες περιόδους. Εξάλλου, ο δυϊσμός της λατρείας του Ηρακλή, ως ήρωα και ως θεού, επιβεβαιώνεται στη Θάσο από τη συνεξέταση των δεδομένων της αρχαιολογικής έρευνας και της μελέτης των γραπτών πηγών και των λειψάνων της πανίδας. Il l'est tout (...) d'abord du fait qu'on ne sait pas exactement dans quelles conditions il a ete compose, et que, faute de manuscrits, il reste impossible a ce jour d'en connaitre la redaction initiale. Dans ses ouvrages ulterieurs, Condillac en a par ailleurs critique plusieurs elements, mais rien ne nous permet de savoir s'il a touche a l'Essai quand il a entrepris de reviser ses ecrits en vue de leur publication dans ses oeuvres completes qu'il n'aura pas eu le temps de mener a bonne fin. Il l'est aussi dans son contenu qui s'efforce d'articuler une philosophie de la connaissance avec ce que nous considererions comme une semiotique generale. Dans cet effort, le genie de Condillac prend appui sur toute la culture de son temps pour ouvrir avec alacrite une voie de recherche dans laquelle il fait oeuvre de pionnier. Ayant en effet arrime l'idee au signe, il entreprend l'inventaire des modalites de fonctionnement de toutes les especes de signes d'institution. Il lui devient alors possible de bousculer de l'interieur la theorie des idees sous les formes qu'elle a prises chez ses predecesseurs, en particulier Malebranche et Locke, et de reconduire sans reste l'idee jusqu'a la sensation. Was passiert, wenn die Bevölkerung die Möglichkeit erhält, sich ungeschminkt und ungefiltert zu bioethischen Problemstellungen zu äußern?

A number of important religious views entail that the ontological and epistemic relations between religion and morality are tighter than most secular thinkers suppose. We will focus on three theistic metaethical accounts of moral phenomena and moral knowledge: natural law theories, divine command theories, and divine will theories. These three types of accounts are among the most dominant in the philosophical literature on theistic ethics in contemporary anglophone philosophy, perhaps owing to their connection to major Western religions such as Christianity, (...) Islam, and Judaism. It is important to note, however, that they hardly exhaust the conceptual space. Intellectual traditions of other religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, traditional Chinese religions, and African religions raise distinct philosophical questions about and offer a host of alternative views on the relationship between religion and morality (Jeffrey 2019). We close by offering a few such examples, though it is outside the scope of this chapter to provide a comprehensive survey of available views. (shrink)

Some theories of goodness are descriptively rich: they have much to say about what makes things good. Neo-Aristotelian accounts, for instance, detail the various features that make a human being, a dog, a bee good relative to facts about those forms of life. Famously, such theories of relative goodness tend to be comparatively poor: they have little or nothing to say about what makes one kind of being better than another kind. Other theories of goodness—those that take there to be (...) absolute goodness—are comparatively rich: they offer grounds for judging some types of things better than others because they have more absolute goodness. Moorean accounts, for example, can tell us that humans and human experiences are superior to bees and blades of grass. But such theories tend to be descriptively poor: they struggle to tell us in virtue of what this is so. In this essay we motivate and flesh out a view that splits the difference between accounts of goodness as relative and accounts of goodness as absolute. Such a view holds promise only if the mechanics of this kind of metaphysics of goodness can be worked out. Here we present a view on which the paradigm for absolute goodness is God and the paradigm for each kind of relative goodness is a divine idea. (shrink)

In this paper, I take a critical look at Sartorio’s book Causation and Free Will (2016). Sartorio offers a rich defence of an actual-sequence view of freedom, which pays close attention to issues in the philosophy of causation and how they relate to freedom. I argue that although this focus on causation is illuminating, Sartorio’s project nevertheless runs into some serious difficulties. Perhaps most worrying amongst them is whether the agent-based reason-sensitivity account, offered by Sartorio, is consistent with Frankfurt-style cases (...) – the very cases which are provided as the sole reason to endorse an actual-sequence view of freedom. I suggest that given that powers and causation are so intimately bound together, the debate is skewed somewhat by thinking of these as rivals. (shrink)

C’est pourtant à elle qu’Arnauld va immédiatement s’en prendre en demandant comment cette doctrine peut éviter les conséquences nécessitaristes qui en découlent apparemment. According to Pariente-Butterlin’s interpretive hypothesis, the level of explicit laws cannot represent the paradigm of the norm. In other words, the construction of normativity refers to an implicit dimension which sheds light on its explicit workings. In this sense, one can grant that conduct is not an expression of the law. This point of view completely displaces the problematic pertaining to the determination of a possible meaning in the production of conducts, for « how is it that we obey (...) legal rules whose existence we are unaware of? » In most of our actions, we do not regulate our conduct according to the value and injunction of the law. This implies that even our relation to laws implies an implicit reference to norms. Hence it becomes conceivable that forms of resistance or acceptance of laws be understood as modalities of action or conduct falling under the implicit horizon of normativity. (shrink)

Prenant appui sur le geste de De Kooning effaçant un dessin de Rauschenberg, Isabelle Pariente-Butterlin mène une méditation qui interroge nos usages et nos disparitions (sur les réseaux et en dehors, dans l'Art et dans la vie). Michel Foucault’s _History of Sexuality_ has been one of the most influential books of the last two decades. It has had an enormous impact on cultural studies and work across many disciplines on gender, sexuality, and the body. Bringing a new set of questions to this key work, Ann Laura Stoler examines volume one of _History of Sexuality_ in an unexplored light. She asks why there has been such a muted engagement with this work among students of colonialism for whom (...) issues of sexuality and power are so essential. Why is the colonial context absent from Foucault’s history of a European sexual discourse that for him defined the bourgeois self? In _Race and the Education of Desire, _Stoler challenges Foucault’s tunnel vision of the West and his marginalization of empire. She also argues that this first volume of _History of Sexuality_ contains a suggestive if not studied treatment of race. Drawing on Foucault’s little-known 1976 College de France lectures, Stoler addresses his treatment of the relationship between biopower, bourgeois sexuality, and what he identified as “racisms of the state.” In this critical and historically grounded analysis based on cultural theory and her own extensive research in Dutch and French colonial archives, Stoler suggests how Foucault’s insights have in the past constrained—and in the future may help shape—the ways we trace the genealogies of race. _Race and the Education of Desire_ will revise current notions of the connections between European and colonial historiography and between the European bourgeois order and the colonial treatment of sexuality. Arguing that a history of European nineteenth-century sexuality must also be a history of race, it will change the way we think about Foucault. (shrink)
