    Intuition and Science. [REVIEW]L. C. G. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):143-143.
Science, which is guided by reason and not pure intuition, is to be regarded as justifiable opinion. Bunge's sketch of philosophical intuition from Aristotle to Heidegger will probably be of interest primarily to the general reader.--G. L. C.

    Portrait of a Philosopher. [REVIEW]L. C. G. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (4):809-810.
These letters reveal Cohen the friend and teacher of philosophers and jurists, the conscientious liberal, the philosopher. Since few of Cohen's germinal ideas appear in his letters, his tenets find their chief expression through his daughter's uneven commentary. Of the major series of letter exchanged between Cohen and noted figures of his time, O. W. Holmes's letters--with their wit and irony-prove the most exciting.--G. L. C.

    Social Justice. [REVIEW]L. C. G. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (4):810-810.
This collection of essays brings together three philosophers, a lawyer, and an economist, who discuss both similar and unrelated points. Of special importance is the treatment of the problem of adjudicating equality and merit. Questions of political, legal, and moral obligation, and of the relationship between justice and the good life are also explored.--G. L. C.

    The Myth of Simplicity. [REVIEW]L. C. G. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):143-143.
A "problem" book which reads, throughout too many of its pages, like an almanac of distinctions. Yet Bunge's discussions of partial truth, causality and chance, and especially of metanomological statements restore the balance and lend support to his thesis: science as a body of knowledge must be regarded as a set of systems of propositions and proposals of many kinds with the aim of "the maximization of the degree of truth."--G. Universals of Language. [REVIEW]L. C. G. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):145-145.
A distinguished group of linguists examine the present state of theoretic linguistics by looking to the past to see what has been accomplished, and to the future for requirements needed to frame a workable theory of language. The universals of language are taken from phonology, grammar, semantics and psycho-linguists. Uriel Weinreich's paper, "On the Semantic Structure of Language," should be of special interest to philosophers.--G. L. C.

Northrop's familiar model of concepts by intellection and by postulation, and their epistemic correlation, provides the key for resolving the dilemma with which the book is concerned: the paradox of man, who is both the closest thing to himself and yet often so unable to understand himself. The argument is taut and the moves so quickly executed--in spite of explicit effort at clarity--that even the reader long familiar with the framework and corpus of Northrop's writings may find himself pleading for (...)

Kurrâ’ya nispet edilen aynı kelimelerdeki edâ farklılıklarının tartışmalara sebep olmasından ötürü kıraat ihtilafı olan kelimelerde ihticâc yapılmasına gereksinim duyulmuştur. Delil getirmek manasında kullanılan ihticâc kavramı, kıraat ihtilafları için söz konusu olduğunda ise kıraat ihtilaflarının sıhhat zemininin ortaya konması kastedilmektedir. Ayrıca 2. asrın sonlarında kıraat tevcîhlerinin yapıldığı müstakil eserler ortaya çıkmakla birlikte kıraat alan yazınına ait genel telifatlarda da kıraat ihticâclarının yapıldığı görülmektedir. Kıraat müelliflerinden biri olan İbnu’l-Cezerî de Neşru’l-ḳırââti’l-‘aşr adlı eserinde zaman zaman kıraat ihticâcına yer vermektedir. Mezkûr eserdeki kıraat ihticâcları (...)

One Health and Zoonotic Uncertainty in Singapore and Australia: Examining Different Regimes of Precaution in Outbreak Decision-Making.C. Degeling, G. L. Gilbert, P. Tambyah, J. Johnson & T. Lysaght - 2020 - Public Health Ethics 13 (1):69-81.
A One Health approach holds great promise for attenuating the risk and burdens of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in both human and animal populations. Because the course and costs of EID outbreaks are difficult to predict, One Health policies must deal with scientific uncertainty, whilst addressing the political, economic and ethical dimensions of communication and intervention strategies. Drawing on the outcomes of parallel Delphi surveys conducted with policymakers in Singapore and Australia, we explore the normative dimensions of two different precautionary (...)

    Churchland's metamers.Rolf G. Kuehni & C. L. Hardin - 2010 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 61 (1):81-92.
Paul Churchland proposed a conceptual framework for translating reflectance profiles into a space he takes to be the color qualia space. It allows him to determine color metamers of spectral surface reflectances without reference to the characteristics of visual systems, claiming that the reflectance classes that it specifies correspond to visually determined metamers. We advance several objections to his method, show that a significant number of reflectance profiles are not placed into the space in agreement with the qualia solid, and (...)

The "visual word form area" is involved in successful memory encoding of both words and faces.L. Mei, G. Xue, C. Chen, F. Xue, M. Zhang & Q. Dong - unknown
Previous studies have identified the critical role of the left fusiform cortex in visual word form processing, learning, and memory. However, this so-called visual word form area's other functions are not clear. In this study, we used fMRI and the subsequent memory paradigm to examine whether the putative VWFA was involved in the processing and successful memory encoding of faces as well as words. Twenty-two native Chinese speakers were recruited to memorize the visual forms of faces and Chinese words. Episodic (...)

The chronic worldwide lack of organs for transplantation and the continuing improvement of strategies for in situ organ preservation have led to renewed interest in elective non-therapeutic ventilation of potential organ donors. Two types of situation may be eligible for elective intensive care: patients definitely evolving towards brain death and patients suitable as controlled non-heart beating organ donors after life-supporting therapies have been assessed as futile and withdrawn. Assessment of the ethical acceptability and the risks of these strategies is essential. (...)

In their article ‘In defense of incompatibility, objectivism, and veridicality about color’ P. Roberts and K. Schmidtke offer the results of an experiment supposed to show that if selection of colored samples representing unique hues for subjects has a greater inter-subject variability than identification of sample pairs with no perceptual difference between them the result provides support for the philosophical concept of color realism. On examining the results in detail, we find that, according to standard statistical methodology, the relative magnitude (...)

This study draws on achievement goal theory and self-determination theory to examine the associations among two motivational climates (i.e. mastery and performance) and two indicators of energy at work (i.e. vigour and emotional exhaustion), as well as the mediating role of basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e. autonomy, relatedness, and competence). A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted collecting data from 1081 engineers and technologists. We applied previously validated instruments to assess the variables of interest. Structural equation modeling analyses were conducted to (...)

    Mally's deontic logic.G.-J. C. Lokhorst & L. Goble - 2004 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 67 (1):37-57.
In 1926, Mally presented the first formal system of deontic logic. His system had several consequences which Mally regarded as surprising but defensible. It also, however, has the consequence that A is obligatory if and only if A is the case, which is unacceptable from the point of view of any reasonable deontic logic. We describe Mally's system and discuss how it might reasonably be repaired.
