Plato's Republic has proven to be of astounding influence and importance. This paper describes the Electronic Schoolbag, a digital workspace developed at the University of Savoie (France) and analyses its usages. This online environment is dedicated to the educational world: it offers pupils, students, teachers, school staff, or parents, personal and group workspaces in which individual or collaborative activities can take place. The flexibility of this software, allowing synchronous or asynchronous activities, lies in the “participation model”. This model allows groups themselves to describe and organise their activities. The architecture that permits (...) its implementation in the Electronic Schoolbag workspace is described. The study of the practices of the workspace is then presented. This requires different observation methods, according to the different procedures chosen: real practices provided by quantitative methods (analysis of the logs of the actions and questionnaires) and imagined practices provided by qualitative methods (semi-directive interviews). The results obtained from the university users allow us to assess the evolution of the usages for different periods and on different university sites. The observatory also lets us list the main uses of the Electronic Schoolbag for educative communication (collaborative vs. individual, informative vs. communicative). (shrink)

We offer a critical survey of the most discussed accounts of epistemic peer disagreement that are found in the recent literature. We also sketch an alternative approach in line with a pluralist understanding of epistemic rationality.

The relationship between the continuity equation and the HamiltonianH of a quantum system is investigated from a nonstandard point of view. In contrast to the usual approaches, the expression of the current densityJ ψ is givenab initio by means of a transport-velocity operatorV T, whose existence follows from a “weak” formulation of the correspondence principle. Once given a Hilbert-space metricM, it is shown that the equation of motion and the continuity equation actually represent a system in theunknown operatorsH andV T, (...) due to the arbitrariness on the initial condition of the quantum state. The general solution is given in some cases of special interest and a straightforward application to relativistic quantum mechanics is performed. (shrink)

The traditional approach to the covariance problem in quantum mechanics is inverted and the space-time transformations are assumed as the basicunknowns, according to the prescription that the correspondence principle and the commutation rules must becovariant. It is shown that the only solutions are either Galilean or Lorentzian (including the possibility of an imaginary light-velocity c2<0). The Dirac formalism for the wave-equation and the condition c2>0 are obtained simoultaneously as theunique solution, provided that the Hamiltonian is Hermitean (in the usual sense), (...) and the internal degrees of freedom allow for afinite-dimensional representation. Infinite-dimensional representations are introduced in order to extend the Hamiltonian formalism to other spinors. (shrink)

Here we review and discuss the link between regeneration capacity and tumor suppression comparing mammals (embryos versus adults) with highly regenerative vertebrates. Similar to mammal embryo morphogenesis, in amphibians (essentially newts and salamanders) the reparative process relies on a precise molecular and cellular machinery capable of sensing abnormal signals and actively reprograming or eliminating them. As the embryo's evil twin, tumor also retains common functional attributes. The immune system plays a pivotal role in maintaining a physiological balance to provide surveillance (...) against tumor initiation or to support its initiation and progression. We speculate that susceptibility to cancer development in adult mammals may be determined by the loss of an advanced regenerative capability during evolution and believe that gaining mechanistic insights into how regenerative capacity linked to tumor suppression is postnatally lost in mammals might illuminate an as yet unrecognized route to cancer treatment. In this paper we argue that hermeneutics acquires additional relevance in the era of technology. In particular legal hermeneutics offers examples of how the use of specific instruments aimed at constituting legal objects (like the digital instruments used by notaries) demonstrate that legal professions will never be entirely delegated to machines. The capacity to use the instruments and the very functioning of those instruments can never be detached from comprehension, and from legal savoir.

Dans la Silicon Valley, les échanges d’information entre les capital-risqueurs, les juristes, les entrepreneurs, les dirigeants d’entreprises, les journalistes, les professeurs d’université... se font pour l’essentiel au sein de réseaux d’acteurs interdépendants et complémentaires qui respectent (...) implicitement les principes du don dans leurs échanges.From the analysis of the social networks underlying the industrial networks of Silicon Valley, this search points out that because of the nature of the exchanged goods and the degree of interdependence between the economic actors, the exchange by the gift is the principle rule of exchange in networks. In Silicon Valley, the exchanges of information between venture capitalists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, managers of large companies, journalists, professors... are done essentially within networks of interdependent and complementary actors who implicitly respect the rules of the gift exchange theory. L'idee de paix perpetuelle, utopie pour les uns, objet d'une esperance fondee pour les autres, ne saurait laisser indifferent. L'annee 1995 qui marquait le 250eme anniversaire de la parution de l'opuscule de Kant Vers la paix perpetuelle a suscite de nombreux travaux qui en ont montre l'importance et le role a l'interieur du systeme critique lui-meme et dans l'elaboration d'une charte universelle de la paix. Ce volume rassemble une serie d'etudes qui montrent les metamorphoses de l'idee de paix de la (...) fin du XVIIe siecle a la Revolution francaise et presente un certain nombre d'ecrits jusqu'ici inedits, ou peu accessible dans leur ensemble en langue francaise. Ainsi figurent des textes de Pierre Nicole, William Penn, Castel de Saint-Pierre, Voltaire, Fichte, Friedrich Schlegel ainsi que des articles de journaux francais de l'epoque parus en 1796 en echo a l'ouvrage de Kant. Un debat tres vif eut lieu parmi les commentateurs medioplatoniciens sur le rapport entre la forme du bien de la Republique et le demiurge du Timee. Certains d’entre eux, comme Plutarque et Atticus, parvinrent a identifier ces deux entites, d’autres, comme Numenius, a situer les deux principes dans une relation hierarchique, en attribuant au bien la qualification de ≪premier dieu≫ et de pere et au demiurge celle de ≪second dieu≫ et de producteur. Cet article se propose d’examiner la question de (...) l’identite de la forme du bien avec le demiurge sur des bases nouvelles, en prenant comme point de depart une interpretation metaphorique de la figure du demiurge, qui ne se presente pas comme un principe metaphysique independant, mais comme une description metaphorique de l’element causal‑efficient du monde des formes, c’est a dire du vivant intelligible. Le demiurge coinciderait donc avec la totalite active et dynamique du monde intelligible. Dans la seconde partie de l’article est prise en consideration l’hypothese que la superiorite de la forme du bien par rapport aux autres formes est du meme genre que celle du demiurge, dans la mesure ou le bien aussi peut etre compris comme la totalite du kosmos intelligible. Il s’agit d’une hypothese qui ne va pas sans difficultes, mais qui merite d’etre examinee jusqu’au bout. (shrink)

This article replies to the critical note by Trabattoni («Elenchos», xxxiii (2012) pp. 69-107). The author defends his interpretation of Plato's Theaetetus against Trabattoni's objections, arguing that the maieutic and peirastic character of the dialogue explains its negative or aporetic conclusion. For the failure of all the attempts to define knowledge in the dialogue doesn't mean that, according to Plato, knowledge is not possible for men or that it can be identified with doxa; on the contrary, Plato clearly states that (...) the philosopher, i.e. the dialectician, is absolutely able to attain the perfect knowledge of the forms. The subsequent failures in the Theaetetus, particularly the last two, depend on the admission of an "additive model'' according to which knowledge is "doxa plus something'', an epistemological attitude that is explicitly rejected in the Meno. Après le 11 septembre, un interdit médiatique, sinon officiel, semble étouffer ce qui reste d'un penser indépendant et critique dont le potentiel avait déjà subi le coup de la post-modernisation.
