This chapter addresses the distinction between private and public and the difference between ‘public’ and ‘official’. Drawing on a comparative analysis of Asian cities, it looks at the ways in which the local, the national and the global levels, which serve different, sometimes contrasting, interests, are negotiated and reconciled in the city. The chapter suggests that different forms of reconciliation have brought about an alternative ‘insitutionalisation’ of the public space. Such an institutionalisation is reflected in the access to, and dissemination (...) of, information—e.g., access to the media—and, above all, in the control over the common goods. The public sphere is used to voice discontent, leading to a new definition of the ‘common good’; that is, the inclusion, or non-exclusion, of large sections of the population which, though initially marginal, can become significant in shaping urban politics. Barsalou's theory of perceptual symbol systems is considered from a metacognitive perspective. Two examples are discussed in terms of the proposed perceptual symbol theory. First, recent results in research on feeling-of-knowing judgement are used to argue for a representation of familiarity with input cues. This representation should support implicit memory. Second, the ability of maintaining a theory of other people's beliefs (theory of mind) is considered and it is suggested that a purely simulation-based view is insufficient to explain the available (...) evidence. Both examples characterize areas where Barsalou's theory would benefit from additional detail. (shrink)

The existence of neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) is not enough for philosophical purposes. On the other hand, there's more to NCC than meets the sceptic's eye. (I) NCC are useful for a better understanding of conscious experience, for instance: (1) NCC are helpful to explain phenomenological features of consciousness – e.g., dreaming. (2) NCC can account for phenomenological opaque facts – e.g., the temporal structure of consciousness. (3) NCC reveal properties and functions of consciousness which cannot be elucidated either (...) by introspective phenomenology or by psychological experiments alone – e.g., vision. (II) There are crucial problems and shortcomings of NCC: (1) Correlation implies neither causation nor identity. (2) There are limitations of empirical access due to the problem of other minds and the problem of self-deception, and (3) due to the restrictions provided by inter- and intraindividual variations. (4) NCC cannot be catched by neuroscience alone because of the externalistic content of representations. Therefore, NCC are not sufficient for a naturalistic theory of mind, (5) nor are they necessary because of the possibility of multiple realization. (III) Nevertheless, NCC are relevant and important for the mind-body problem: (1) NCC reveal features that are necessary at least for behavioral manifestations of human consciousness. (2) But NCC are compatible with very different proposals for a solution of the mind-body problem. This seems to be both advantageous and detrimental. (3) NCC restrict nomological identity accounts. (4) The investigation of NCC can refute empirical arguments for interactionism as a case study of John Eccles' dualistic proposals will show. (5) The discoveries of NCC cannot establish a naturalistic theory of mind alone, for which, e.g., a principle of supervenience and a further condition – and therefore philosophical arguments – are required. The existence of quantum correlates of consciousness (QCC) is doubtful from a scientific perspective. But even if their existence were verified, philosophical problems would remain. On the other hand, there could be more to QCC than meets the sceptic's eye: • QCC might be useful or even necessary for a better understanding of conscious experience or quantum physics or both. The main reasons for this are: the measurement problem (the nature of observation, the mysterious collapse of the wave function, etc.), (...) ostensibly shared features of quantum phenomena and conscious phenomena (e.g., complementarity, nonspatiality, acausality, spontaneity, and holism) and connections (ontology, causation, and knowledge), the qualia problem (subjectivity, explanatory gap etc.). But there are many problems, especially questions regarding realism and the nature and role of conscious observers; • QCC are conceptually challenging, because there are definitory problems and some crucial ontological and epistemological shortcomings. It is instructive to compare them with recent proposals for understanding neural correlates of consciousness (NCC). QCC are not sufficient for a quantum theory of mind, nor might they be necessary except perhaps in a very broad sense; • QCC are also empirically challenging. Nevertheless, QCC could be relevant and important for the mindbody problem: QCC might reveal features that are necessary at least for behavioral manifestations of human consciousness. But QCC are compatible with very different proposals for a solution of the mind-body problem. This seems to be both advantageous and detrimental. QCC restrict accounts of nomological identity. The discovery of QCC cannot establish a naturalistic theory of mind alone. But there are also problems with QCC in the framework of other ontologies. (shrink)

Ongoing developments, such as digitalization, increased the interference of the work and nonwork life domains, urging many to continuously manage engagement in respective domains. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent home-office regulations further boosted the need for employees to find a good work-nonwork balance, thereby optimizing their health and well-being. Consequently, proactive individual-level crafting strategies for balancing work with other relevant life domains were becoming increasingly important. However, these strategies received insufficient attention in previous research despite their potential relevance for satisfying (...) psychological needs, such as psychological detachment. We addressed this research gap by introducing a new scale measuring crafting for a work-nonwork balance and examining its relevance in job-and life satisfaction, work engagement, subjective vitality, family role and job performance, boundary management and self-rated work-nonwork balance. The Work-Nonwork Balance Crafting Scale was validated in five countries, encompassing data from a heterogeneous sample of more than 4,200 employees. In study 1, exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factorial scale structure. Confirmatory factor analysis, test for measurement invariance, and convergent validity were provided in study 2. Replication of confirmatory factor analysis, incremental and criterion validity of the Work-Nonwork Balance Crafting Scale for job and life satisfaction were assessed in study 3. Study 4 displayed criterion validity, test–retest reliability, testing measurement invariance, and applicability of the scale across work cultures. Finally, study 5 delivered evidence for the Work-Nonwork Balance Crafting Scale in predicting work-nonwork balance. The novel Work-Nonwork Balance Crafting Scale captured crafting for the challenging balance between work and nonwork and performed well across several different working cultures in increasingly digitalized societies. Both researchers and practitioners may use this tool to assess crafting efforts to balance both life domains and to study relationships with outcomes relevant to employee health and well-being. Shaping off-job life is becoming increasingly important for workers to increase and maintain their optimal functioning. Proactively shaping the job domain has been extensively studied, but crafting in the off-job domain has received markedly less research attention. Based on the Integrative Needs Model of Crafting, needs-based off-job crafting is defined as workers’ proactive and self-initiated changes in their off-job lives, which target psychological needs satisfaction. Off-job crafting is posited as a possible means for workers to fulfill their needs and enhance (...) well-being and performance over time. We developed a new scale to measure off-job crafting and examined its relationships to optimal functioning in different work contexts in different regions around the world. Furthermore, we examined the criterion, convergent, incremental, discriminant, and structural validity evidence of the Needs-based Off-job Crafting Scale using multiple methods. The results showed that off-job crafting was related to optimal functioning over time, especially in the off-job domain but also in the job domain. Moreover, the novel off-job crafting scale had good convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test–retest reliability. To conclude, our series of studies in various countries show that off-job crafting can enhance optimal functioning in different life domains and support people in performing their duties sustainably. Therefore, shaping off-job life may be beneficial in an intensified and continually changing and challenging working life. (shrink)

The influence of background music on cognitive functions is still a matter of debate. In this study, we investigated the influence of background music on executive functions (particularly on inhibitory functions). Participants completed a standardized cued Go/NoGo task during three different conditions while an EEG was recorded (1: with no background music, 2: with relaxing or 3: with exciting background music). In addition, we collected reaction times, omissions, and commissions in response to the Go and NoGo stimuli. From the EEG (...) data, event-related potentials (ERPs) were calculated for the Go and NoGo trials. From these ERPs, the N2 and P3 components were specifically analyzed since previous studies have shown that these components (and particularly the Go-NoGo difference waves) are strongly associated with inhibitory functions. The N2 and P3 components of the difference waves (N2d and P3d) were used for statistical analyses. The statistical analyses revealed no differences between the three conditions in terms of amplitudes and latencies of the N2d and P3d components. In addition, reaction times, omissions, and commissions were comparable across all conditions. Our results suggest that in the context of this paradigm, music as background acoustic stimulation has no detrimental effects on the performance of a Go/NoGo task and neural underpinnings. (shrink)

Hitlers’ concept of the term Heil (well-being etc.) embraced beside political and (pseudo-)religious, also medical connotations. In this respect it is deeply rooted in the European tradition that goes back until to the Greek-Roman Antiquity. The analysis of medical-biological metaphors in Mein Kampf illuminates their focus: a exogenous pathology of the people’s body caused by poison and infection. Beyond its metaphorism this explicative model stresses exclusively the collective character of disease and appeals to political and personal consequences relative to the (...) preservation of health and the prevention of disease.The often violent realization of these demands after the accession to power of the Nazis illustrates impressively the primacy of Hitler’s perception of Heil in his personal way of acting. In this paper I consider three widespread assumptions: (1) the assumption that we are accountable for our intentional actions only if they are in some special sense ours; (2) the assumption that it is possible for us to be more or less “true to” ourselves, and that we are flawed human beings to the extent that we lack “integrity”; and (3) the assumption that we can sometimes give ourselves reasons by giving ourselves commands. I acknowledge that, as Ruediger Bittner has (...) argued, each of these assumptions is problematic, and that the failure to appreciate the problems has led many philosophers astray. I try to show, however, that it is possible to make sense of each assumption in a way that addresses Bittner’s concerns. (shrink)

Der Herausgeber der BZ gibt in jugendlichem Elan einen gewichtigen Anstoß, um endlich über das sechsbändige Quellenkompendium von Phaidon Kukules (1948–55) hinauszukommen, das freilich mehr einer enzyklopädischen Kultur- und Alltagsgeschichte gleichkommt und von den kulturhistorischen Konstellationen der Zwischenkriegszeit in Griechenland geprägt ist. Für die kulturhistorische Auswertung ekklesialer und profaner byzantinischen Quellen wäre vielleicht auch das «Dokimion» von K. Sathas zu nennen (1878) und noch manch andere ältere oder auch neuere Arbeit, die in Griechenland selbst veröffentlicht worden ist. Es sollte dem (...) kulturhistorischen Verständnis heute aber nicht schwerfallen, zu akzeptieren, daß Kukules von «unseren byzantinischen Vorfahren» spricht, waren doch weite Teile der neugriechischen und «philhellenischen» Wissenschaft in ganz Europa (vor allem Deutschland) nach dem Fallmerayer-Schock bemüht, das Kontinuitätstheorem besser zu untermauern, dem immerhin die offizielle Staatsideologie aus heute einsichtigen politischen Gründen verpflichtet war, unter anderem eben auch die Historiographie und Volkskunde (vgl. G. Veloudis, «Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer und die Entstehung des neugriechischen Historismus», Südost-Forschungen 39, 1970, S. 43ff. und W. Puchner, «Ideologische Dominanten in der wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit der griechischen Volkskultur im 19. Jahrhundert». Zeitschrift für Balkanologie 35/1, 1999, S. 46–62.). Schreiner's gewichtiger Anstoß ist vor allem ein Vorschlag und ein Versuch, eine historische Volkskunde von Byzanz methodisch auf die Beine zu stellen, ist doch die Kultur, die sich in den Quellen niederschlägt und von der Forschung behandelt wird, vorwiegend eine Elitekultur, die kaum ein Prozent der Reichsbevölkerung betrifft. Aber mit der Quellensituation beginnen auch die Schwierigkeiten: wo endet das Byzantinische Reich (Misch- und Randkulturen) und wer ist das «Volk» dieser Volkskunde? Aus der eher profillosen Bevölkerungsmasse (ein Produkt der Quellen) hebt sich nur die Hofkultur und die monastische und ekklesiale Kultur ab; deutliche Standes- und Klassengrenzen sind nicht auszumachen, eine eigene Stadtkultur beschränkt sich auf Konstantinopel und ist in anderen Städten erst spät nachzuweisen bzw. wird von der osmanischen Landnahme im Keim erstickt. Schreiner macht sich einige Grundgedanken der rezenten Volkskunde und Kulturtheorie zu eigen, die die Alltagskultur als Grundlage ihres Forschungsgegenstandes betrachtet, nachdem das «Volk» der traditionellen Volkskunde sich schon lange in die Museen zurückgezogen hat. Somit geht es um die Dokumentation der Alltagkultur von Mittel- und Unterschichten, wobei auch die Elite duchaus miteinbezogen wird, da sich ihr Alltag kaum unterschiedlich gestaltet. (shrink)

Kaluẑnin stellte die Aufgabe, die derart definierten zahlentheoretischen Funktionen je nach der Kompliziert‐heit der betreffenden Graphschemata in Klassen zu teilen. Es war zuvermuten, dass man auf diese Weise konstruktive Zwischenstufen zwischen den bekannten speziell‐rekursiven Funktionen und den allgemein‐rekursiven Funktionen erhaält. Excerpt from Kants Lehre vom "Bewusstsein Uberhaupt" Und Ihre Weiterbildung bis auf die Gegenwart Da ich die Entstehung und Ausfuhrung dieser Schrift von Anfang an bis zum Schluss mit Aufmerksamkeit verfolgt habe, weil ich an ihrem Gegenstand ein besonderes Interesse genommen habe, so widme ich ihr bei ihrem Schritt in die Welt hinaus gerne noch einige Abschiedsworte zum Geleit. Ich tue dies mit einiger Wehmut, denn in Folge eines Augenleidens, das mich vor einiger Zeit zwang, meine amtliche Tatigkeit niederzulegen, ist (...) dies wohl die letzte von mir hervorgerufene Dissertation an hiesiger Universitat. Das Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit, jedoch mit Beschrankung auf Kant, hatte die hiesige philosophische Fakultat auf meine Veranlassung hin als Preisaufgabe gestellt: "Kants Lehre vom Bewusstsein uberhaupt." Ich hatte Gelegenheit, ihm zu sagen, er solle die Literatur uber Kant zunachst gar nicht berucksichtigen und sich vielmehr ein ganz selbstandiges Urteil uber den Gegenstand erwerben; zu diesem Zwecke brauche er aber nur drei Dinge: auf der linken Seite die samtlichen Werke Kaum, auf der rechten Seite einige Buch weisses Papier und dazu noch sein Schreibgerat, um sich aus den ersteren in die zweiten die notigen Auszuge zu machen. Wenn er sich auf diese Weise selbstandig in den Gegenstand hineingearbeitet habe, musse er uber das Thema - wenigstens historisch - mehr wissen als samtliche sekundaren Schriftsteller zusammengenommen, die er eben deshalb auch erst nachher vielleicht noch mit einigem Nutzen werde heranziehen konnen. In this essay we will consider another basic topic: the problem of the nature of the distinctions between Sitte, Brauch, Wert, Mode, and Recht, on which Weber's discussion relies. These discussions typically involved the untranslatable concept of Sitte, which marks a contrast between practices or customs with normative force and “mere practice.” There is a close parallel to this distinction in American social thought in W. G. Sumner's latinate distinction between the mores and folkways of a society. In what (...) follows we shall simply use the German term as a reminder of its long history in German philosophy. Weber was obviously aware of this history, as was Jhering. Our aim will be to examine Weber's modifications of the received version of these distinctions and to consider the Implications of these modifications. As we shall see, what Weber represents as an innocuous classificatory problem contains a much more significant conceptual transformation, which bears on the general image of modernity as rationalization constructed by Weber. Ich will meine Gedanken folgendermaßen zusammenfassen: Ein spontanes und früh erlerntes Glaubenserlebnis ringt immer mit einer wissenschaftlichen Analyse. Zwar wird die Religionspsychologie negativ aufgefaßt, aber sie hilft uns auch einzusehen, wie solch eine Einstellung entstehen kann. Die intensive Glaubenserfahrung enthält immer eine Totalitätsorientierung, die den eigentlichen Grund in transzendentalen Größen sucht. Eine aufgezwängte Umorientierung bringt immer einen gewissen Schmerz mit sich. Eine religionspsychologische Analyse der Glaubensmotive führt jedoch auch zu einem Verständnis für das wichtige Zusammenspiel, das die Symbol-motive der Tradition (...) haben, und müßte auch mit den persönlich erlebten Situationen seit der Kindheit rechnen. Dadurch, daß man Zusammenspielsmöglichkeiten zwischen den historisch gegebenen Modellen und den individuellen Situationen findet, geschieht ein Wechsel, der wichtige Modelle des menschlichen Lebens vertieft und ins Bewußtsein bringt. Dies ist doch kein selbstverständlicher oder automatischer Prozeß, sondern falsche Verbindungen und negative Bindungen sind auch möglich. Hier muß eine religionsspychologische Ethik entwickelt werden. Große Aufträge erwarten uns in der Zukunft. Das oben Erwähnte kann man auch so ausdrücken: Der Glaube an Gottes Wirken ist nicht streitig mit dem Handhaben wissenschaftlicher Modelle. Ebensowenig wie das Brot und der Wein des Abendmahls was anderes als Brot und Wein zu sein brauche, ebensowenig brauchen das Gesundbeten, das Zungenreden, die Prophezeiung, die Stigmatisierung, ja des Lebens heilige Momente etwas anderes zu sein als die Ergebnisse menschlich gegebener Prozesse, um Gottes Gegenwart zu erleben. Durch die innere symbolische Interaktion wird menschliche Dürftigkeit in eine Heiligkeit mit Ewigkeitswert verwandelt - und umgekehrt: Die jahrhundertelange Mythologie findet ihre menschliche Inkarnation. 1) Daß das Ich »nothwendig Identität des Subjects und Objects« sei, und zwar »schlechthin«: Diese These hat Fichte in der 2. Aufl. der WL 1794 bekräftigt. Das klingt denn doch nach einer cartesianischen Absolutsetzung des Ich. Die Aporien oder Begründungsschwierigkeit der Frage wissender Selbstbeziehung, die daraus entstehen, wenn das Ich als Instanz den Akten des Erkennens vorausgesetzt wird, die die Identität des Ich gerade erst plausibel machen sollen, brauche ich hier nicht auszuführen. Es reicht nicht hin, die »Identität des Subjekts« (...) durch das bloß »dem Gedanken angehängte Ich« zu bezeichnen. Was diesen höchsten Punkt aller Transzendental-Philosophie angeht, hat Hölderlin einen Lösungsansatz formuliert, der darin besteht - und darauf sollen die folgenden Skizzen hinweisen –, daß dasjenige, was als Identität eines Subjekts gedacht wird, als Relation zu begreifen ist. The purpose of this text is to draw attention to eight forgotten heroes: William C. Bagley, Charles DeGarmo, David Felmley, William Torrey Harris, Isaac L. Kandel, Charles McMurry, William C. Ruediger, and Edward Austin Sheldon. They have been marginalized from our profession, and drawing upon their legacy is the best hope for restoring the profession of teaching today. This work also includes a chapter at the end of the book entitled "John Dewey's Forgotten Essays." Leibniz diskutierte den Nutzen der gerichtlichen Folter, obwohl er von ihr abgestoßen war. Er betrachtete Folter als eine Ermittlungsmethode, die den höchsten Grad an Sicherheit erreichen kann und nutzte sie metaphorisch, um analoge Praktiken in der experimentellen Wissenschaft zu beschreiben. Er befiirwortete jedoch nicht den Mißbrauch der Natur, sondern eher eine unübertreffliche Methode, die die Natur dazu bringt, zu 'gestehen', ohne sie dauerhaft zu schädigen.

Zusammenfassung Das Verbot des Fleischverzehrs kann als ein besonders zentrales Element buddhistischer Esskonventionen bezeichnet werden. Auch wenn die allmähliche Entwicklung hin zu dieser Regel sowie Abweichungen von ihr bereits häufiger in der Forschung thematisiert wurden, ist der Fleischverzicht nach wie vor eine diskursbestimmende Orientierungsgröße, der gegenüber sich konforme oder abweichende Bräuche positionieren müssen. Die japanischen Buddhismen stellen dabei Prototypen dieses Verhältnisses dar, da der Großteil von Mönchen und Nonnen in der Gegenwart offen das Fleischverzehrverbot nicht einhält. Heißt dies aber allein, (...) dass derartige Teile des Alltags lediglich von einer „buddhistischen“ Seite des Lebens getrennt vorgestellt werden? Innerhalb des Aufsatzes zeige ich, wie die Schule Jōdo Shinshū eine eigene Normierung der Handhabung und des Verspeisens von Essen entwickelt hat. Diese unterscheidet sich dezidiert von einer fleischlosen und streng ritualisierten Art zu essen, die heute als Diskurselement oder zeitlich begrenzte Praxis noch in den meisten buddhistischen Schulen präsent ist. Anhand einer Untersuchung von dargebotenen Speisen, Mahlzeiten zu besonderen Gelegenheiten sowie Tischgebeten zeige ich, wie diese Normierungen zu einem maßgeblichen Anteil das Buddhismusverständnis der Jōdo Shinshū zum Ausdruck bringt. Baruch Spinoza, Friedrich Nietzsche and, more recently, Ruediger Bittner argued that regret is unreasonable. My article criticises this view and describes what I consider to be the common-sense understanding of regret: In some – but not all – cases of flawed actions it is unreasonable to regret what one did. The article characterises the common-sense understanding by eight principles and offers an explication of core concepts.
