In der 1970 gegründeten Reihe erscheinen Arbeiten, die philosophiehistorische Studien mit einem systematischen Ansatz oder systematische Studien mit philosophiehistorischen Rekonstruktionen verbinden. Neben deutschsprachigen werden auch englischsprachige Monographien veröffentlicht. Gründungsherausgeber sind: Erhard Scheibe (Herausgeber bis 1991), Günther Patzig (bis 1999) und Wolfgang Wieland (bis 2003). Von 1990 bis 2007 wurde die Reihe von Jürgen Mittelstraß mitherausgegeben.

Despite its lack of content, the concept of dignity plays a central role in the German bio-ethical discussion because it appears in Article 1 in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. The architects of the constitution, like those of the other laws in which the concept appears, thereby pursued the aim of anchoring human rights in the nature of human beings. It has been suggested that the vacuity of the concept be filled by interpreting it with Kant. This (...) saddles one with the insoluble problems of the Kantian prescriptive ethic. It therefore makes more sense to interpret human dignity in terms of a volitional ethics and to situate it in the possession of human rights, which in turn is deduced from the goal orientedness of human activity, thus avoiding circularity.
