Systemic Ethics and Inclusive Governance: Two Key Prerequisites for Sustainability Transitions of Agri-Food Systems.Sibylle Bui, Ionara Costa, Olivier De Schutter, Tom Dedeurwaerdere, Marek Hudon & Marlene Feyereisen - 2019 - Agriculture and Human Values 36 (2):277-288.
Food retailers are powerful actors of the agro-industrial food system. They exert strong lock-in effects that hinder transitions towards more sustainable agri-food systems. Indeed, their marketing practices generally result in excluding the most sustainable food products, such as local, low-input, small-scale farmers’ products. Recently in Belgium, several initiatives have been created to enable the introduction of local products on supermarket shelves. In this article, we study three of those initiatives to analyse if the development of local sourcing in supermarkets opens (...)

    PR Professionals as Organizational Conscience.Marlene S. Neill & Minette E. Drumwright - 2012 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 27 (4):220-234.
Scholars have long asserted that public relations (PR) professionals should play the role of organizational conscience, but little research has focused on why and how they play this role effectively. We found that PR professionals who played the role of organizational conscience had broadened conceptions of their roles and responsibilities, including a fervent duty to the public interest. This often put them in the position of providing criticism to powerful organizational players. Rather than raising their ethical concerns as persuasive orators, (...)

How the Weak Variance of Momentum Can Turn Out to Be Negative.M. R. Feyereisen - 2015 - Foundations of Physics 45 (5):535-556.
Weak values are average quantities, therefore investigating their associated variance is crucial in understanding their place in quantum mechanics. We develop the concept of a position-postselected weak variance of momentum as cohesively as possible, building primarily on material from Moyal and Sonego :1135, 1991) . The weak variance is defined in terms of the Wigner function, using a standard construction from probability theory. We show this corresponds to a measurable quantity, which is not itself a weak value. It also leads (...)

  15. The Shameless Truth: Shame and Friendship in Aristotle.Marlene K. Sokolon - 2013 - European Journal of Political Theory 12 (4):447-465.
Does shame have a limited moral role because it is associated with a loss of self-respect or is it an important emotional support for socially beneficial behaviours? Aristotle supports the latter position. In his ethical theory, he famously claims that shame is a semi-virtue essential in the habituation of moral norms. He clarifies this role in the Rhetoric’s lesser-known distinction between true and conventional shame, which implies human beings make subjective evaluations of those appropriated cultural norms. Importantly, he locates this (...)

Actions Necessary to Prevent Childhood Obesity: Creating the Climate for Change.Marlene B. Schwartz & Kelly D. Brownell - 2007 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 35 (1):78-89.
Childhood obesity has become a public health epidemic, and currently a battle exists over how to frame and address this problem. This paper explores how public policy approaches can be employed to address obesity. We present the argument that obesity should be viewed as the consequence of a “toxic environment” rather than the result of the population failing to take enough “personal responsibility.” In order to make progress in decreasing the prevalence of obesity, we must shift our view of obesity (...)

Actions Necessary to Prevent Childhood Obesity: Creating the Climate for Change.Marlene B. Schwartz & Kelly D. Brownell - 2007 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 35 (1):78-89.
After years of near total neglect, the problem of childhood obesity is now in the limelight. Terms like “epidemic,” “crisis,” and “emergency” are used frequently when describing the trend. Progress is defined with strong language and fueled by statistics such as the observation that this generation of children will be the first to live shorter lives than their parents. Multi-disciplinary journals such as the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics have dedicated symposiums to the issue, and conferences have been convened (...)

    The Discipline of Culturology: A New 'Ready-Made Thought' for Russia.Marlène Laruelle - 2004 - Diogenes 51 (4):21-36.
‘Culturology’ is an integral, often compulsory, part of Russian university courses; the discipline has largely replaced chairs in Marxist-Leninism and dialectical materialism, and bookshops are full of texts on the subject. This article is based on analysis of more than ten university textbooks recommended to first-year students. Marlène Laruelle examines why culturology has become so important, the place claimed for it within the human sciences, and what it means for changing Russian ideas of identity and nation.

Teaching the Territory: Agroecological Pedagogy and Popular Movements.Nils McCune & Marlen Sánchez - 2019 - Agriculture and Human Values 36 (3):595-610.
This contribution traces the parallel development of two distinct approaches to peasant agroecological education: the peasant-to-peasant horizontal method that disseminated across Mesoamerica and the Caribbean beginning in the 1970s, and the political-agroecological training schools of combined consciousness-building and skill-formation that have been at the heart of the educational processes of member organizations of La Via Campesina since the 1990s. Applying a theoretical framework that incorporates territorial struggle, agroecology and popular education, we examine spatial and organizational aspects of each of these (...)

    A Code of Ethics for Nurse Educators: Revised.Marlene M. Rosenkoetter & Jeri A. Milstead - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (1):137-139.
Nurse educators have the responsibility of assisting students and their colleagues with understanding and practicing ethical conduct. There is an inherent responsibility to keep codes current and relevant for existing nursing practice. The code presented here is a revision of the Code of ethics for nurse educators originally published in 1983 and includes changes that are intended to provide for that relevancy.

Harry Frankfurt's Metaphysics of Care: Towards an Ethics Without Reason.Marlène Jouan - 2008 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 34 (7):759-797.
Harry Frankfurt's conception of care and love has largely been considered a seductive theory of personality, but an untenable and irresponsible theory of moral normativity. Contrary to that interpretation, this article aims at showing that it is possible to remain faithful to Frankfurt's metaphysical premises while not falling into some moral relativism. First, by comparing Frankfurt's and Heidegger's conceptions of care, I show that Frankfurt's subordination of ethics to carology apparently commits him to a neutral foundationalism. In the next step, (...)

Are Human Gestures in the Present Time a Mere Vestige of a Former Sign Language? Probably Not.Pierre Feyereisen - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (2):220-221.
Right-hand preference for conversational gestures does not imply close connections between the neural systems controlling manual and vocal communication. Use of speech and gestures may dissociate in some cases of focal brain damages. Furthermore, there are limits in the ability to combine spoken words and concurrent hand movements. These findings suggest that discourse production depends on multiple components which probably have different evolutionary origins.

Challenging Sovereignty? The USA and the Establishment of the International Criminal Court.Marlene Wind - 2009 - Ethics and Global Politics 2 (2):83-108.
Does the establishment of a permanent InternationalWar Crimes Tribunal (International Criminal Court - ICC) constitute a challenge to national sovereignty? According to previous US governments and several American observers, the answer is yes. Establishing a world court that acts independently of the states that gave birth to it renders the idea of sovereignty meaningless. This article analyzes the American objections to the ICC and the conception of sovereignty and international law underlying these objections. It first considers the structure and intent (...)

Classifying the Body in Marlene Dumas' The Image as Burden.Anthea Gordon - 2018 - Medical Humanities 44 (1):64-70.
Medical photography, and in particular dermatological imagery, is often assumed to provide an objective, and functional, representation of disease and that it can act as a diagnostic aid. By contrast, artistic conceptions of the images of the body tend to focus on interpretative heterogeneity and ambiguity, aiming to create or explore meaning rather than enact a particular function. In her 2015 retrospective exhibition at the Tate Modern, South African artist Marlene Dumas questions these disciplinary divides by using medical imagery (...)

Conducted by Burgess & Morrison during 1993‐94, the project forms part of the Economic and Social Research Council's Nation's Diet Initiative. Using data from the project, this paper explores food choice and consumption in relation to the institutional dynamics of two English secondary schools and (...)

Microfoundations of Partnerships: Exploring the Role of Employees in Trickle Effects.Ans Kolk, Marlene Vock & Willemijn van Dolen - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 135 (1):19-34.
The growing body of literature on partnerships has paid most attention to their implications at the macro level, for society, as well as the meso level, for the partnering organisations. While generating many valuable insights, what has remained underexposed is the micro level, i.e. the role of managers and employees in partnerships, and how their actions and interactions can have an effect on the spread and potential effectiveness of collaborative efforts. This article uses a case-study approach to empirically explore the (...)

    Outline of an Uexküllian Bio-Ontology.Marlen Tonnessen - 2001 - Sign Systems Studies 29 (2):683-690.
Traditionally, ontology, or at least western ontology, bas been an anthropocentric enterprise, that takes only human experiences into account. In this paper I argue that a prolific biocentric ontology can be based on UexkülI's Umwelt theory. UexkülI offers the basis of an ontology according to which the study of experiences is a much wider field than it is as depicted by classical ontology and contemporary philosophy of consciousness. Based on the thoughts of the contemporary philosopher Thomas Nagel I claim that (...)

The relationship between languages and philosophy is so strong that French philosopher Barbara Cassin speaks of 'philosophising in languages'. This paper aims to show how translation can be a means to help disseminate philosophical ideas. It might even be called a political tool, when circulating feminist philosophical thoughts is concerned. The article uses the latest English translation of Simone de Beauvoir's Le deuxième sexe to address the pitfalls philosophy presents translators with. It also aims to defend the Interpretive Theory of (...)
