The association between temperament and depressive symptoms in adolescence: Brooding and reflection as potential mediators.Amy Mezulis, Jordan Simonson, Elizabeth McCauley & Ann Vander Stoep - 2011 - Cognition and Emotion 25 (8):1460-1470.
  2. Faith, Freedom, and Rationality: Philosophy of Religion Today.Daniel Howard-Snyder & Jeff Jordan (eds.) - 1996 - Rowman & Littlefield.
This collection of essays is dedicated to William Rowe, with great affection, respect, and admiration. The philosophy of religion, once considered a deviation from an otherwise analytically rigorous discipline, has flourished over the past two decades. This collection of new essays by twelve distinguished philosophers of religion explores three broad themes: religious attitudes of faith, belief, acceptance, and love; human and divine freedom; and the rationality of religious belief. Contributors include: William Alston, Robert Audi, Jan Cover, Martin Curd, Peter van (...)

Sadness and fear, but not happiness, motivate inhibitory behaviour: the influence of discrete emotions on the executive function of inhibition.Justin Storbeck, Jennifer L. Stewart & Jordan Wylie - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
Inhibition, an executive function, is critical for achieving goals that require suppressing unwanted behaviours, thoughts, or distractions. One hypothesis of the emotion and goal compatibility theory is that emotions of sadness and fear enhance inhibitory control. Across Experiments 1–4, we tested this hypothesis by inducing a happy, sad, fearful, and neutral emotional state prior to completing an inhibition task that indexed a specific facet of inhibition (oculomotor, resisting interference, behavioural, and cognitive). In Experiment 4, we included an anger induction to (...)

  5. Emergence of self and other in perception and action: An event-control approach.J. Scott Jordan - 2003 - Consciousness and Cognition 12 (4):633-646.
The present paper analyzes the regularities referred to via the concept 'self.' This is important, for cognitive science traditionally models the self as a cognitive mediator between perceptual inputs and behavioral outputs. This leads to the assertion that the self causes action. Recent findings in social psychology indicate this is not the case and, as a consequence, certain cognitive scientists model the self as being epiphenomenal. In contrast, the present paper proposes an alternative approach (i.e., the event-control approach) that is (...)

    The phantom array.Wayne A. Hershberger & J. Scott Jordan - 1996 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (3):552-553.
The array seen when saccading across a point light source blinking in the dark is displaced in the direction of the saccade. This displacement reflects an abrupt shift of spatiotopic coordinates that precedes the actual eye movement. The extraretinal signal mediating this discrete shift appears to be an oculomotor reference signal, specifying intended eye orientation, that changes discretely before saccades.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has vast natural resources, many of which are regularly exploited by the electronics industry. Unfortunately, in addition to these resources, there are widespread human rights abuses committed by armed groups entrenched in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. These armed groups are using profits from these minerals as a source of funding. Their human rights abuses have led to a growing humanitarian interest in the region and prompted the international community to action. (...)

    Das problem der „ganzheit” in der biologie.Herman J. Jordan - 1935 - Acta Biotheoretica 1 (1-2):100-112.
Life as a complicated process is composed of causal phenomena. But even if we know the reasons of all that happens in a living organism, we do not know what life really is. The problem of intercausal relation, of “causal structure” remains. The reason why a process takes place, must be found by analysis, causal structures are found by synthesis of the results of this analysis. Causal structures are characterized by two kinds of equilibrium: energetic and specific equilibrium. A state (...)

    DNA microarrays in the clinic: how soon, how extensively?Bertrand R. Jordan - 2007 - Bioessays 29 (7):699-705.
Although DNA microarrays are now widely used in research settings, they have been slow to penetrate clinical practice in spite of their apparent advantages. This is due to the very different requirements for a clinical test in contrast to a research tool, and to a strict necessity for demonstrated clinical utility. There is a clear differentiation between two types of DNA array tests: “genomic” diagnostics, developed to ascertain the presence or absence of mutations, deletions or duplications, and for which clinical (...)

Fractured Humerous/Fractured Humor—What a Broken Arm Taught Me About Racial and Cultural Privilege in Hospital Care.Sara R. Jordan - 2013 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 3 (1):14-18.
This narrative symposium examines the relationship of bioethics practice to personal experiences of illness. A call for stories was developed by Tod Chambers, the symposium editor, and editorial staff and was sent to several commonly used bioethics listservs and posted on the Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics website. The call asked authors to relate a personal story of being ill or caring for a person who is ill, and to describe how this affected how they think about bioethical questions and the (...)

Growth to freedom or support for life?Bill Jordan - 2004 - Res Publica 10 (2):193-205.
This article reviews the recent contributions of Amartya Sen and John McMurtry to theory of international development and social justice. The author argues that both fail to give an adequate account of the current transformation of collective life and the provision of collective goods. Without such an analysis, theories of justice are incomplete.
