Arnould de Vuez, author of the Parthenon drawings attributed to Carrey The earliest complete series of drawings showing the Parthenon frieze - the Album Noitel (1674) - has traditionally been attributed to the Troyes artist Jacques Carrey. Such attribution should be brought into question. This document was drawn during the Aegean Sea expedition led by Marquis de Nointel, Louis XIV's ambassador to Constantinople. Several sources mention that the two painters attached to the French diplomat were of "Flemish" origin. The latter (...) mention straightaway makes any intervention by Jacques Carrey impossible, as he is from Champagne. The name of one of these 'Flemish' painters is Rombaut Faydherbe, from Malines, (1649-1673), who is known to have died, during the visit to the island of Naxos, therefore before the visit of the mission to Athens. Our study tends to prove that his travelling companion most probably was a painter from Lille, Arnould deVuez (1644-1720), of Flemish origin, whose presence alongside Marquis de Nointel is also attested during his ambassadorship to Constantinople. In this article, I analyse the role of the concepts of ‘practice,’ ‘relations,’ and ‘process’ in Rein Vihalemm’s philosophy of science and the way he defined and articulated these concepts to study the production of scientific knowledge. Then, following Vihalemm’s line of reasoning, I will show how this approach is promising for thinking in a new way about some developments in contemporary sciences and technology.

Afin de préciser l’héritage théologique dans lequel le Séminaire de culture théologique s’est inscrit par ses fondateurs, il convient d’explorer la manière dont les libristes ont développé leur enseignement théologique au fil du temps au sein de leur Faculté fondée à Lausanne en 1847. Il nourrit la formation octroyée aux laïcs mettant en œuvre une pédagogie de la conviction ancrée dans la théologie du Réveil propagée durant plus d’un siècle (1847-1966) par l’Église évangélique libre du canton de Vaud et par (...) sa Faculté. Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s’agissait plus largement de repenser l’implication du christianisme dans la société. L’édition critique des œuvres de Moïse ben Sabbataï, philosophe juif actif (à Rome?) vers 1340, avait signalé, parmi d’autres sources latines lues dans les traductions en hébreu de son contemporain Juda de Rome, un exemplum présentant le sage athénien Solon sur son lit de mort en champion de la doctrine de l’élévation intellectuelle en vue de la vie éternelle. Cette note identifie comme sa source un chapitre d’Albert le Grand, De natura et origine animae II, 13, dont la traduction en (...) hébreu se trouve dans un ouvrage inédit de Juda de Rome, son Commentaire du Qaddīš et de la Qeduššāh. La traduction du chapitre est éditée, l’histoire de l’ exemplum reconstituée et son emploi par les trois auteurs, remis en contexte et interprété. (shrink)

Les observations des activités de jeux et de construction de jouets se concentrent sur l’âge préscolaire et primaire. Le début des activités ludiques des filles et garçons à l’extérieur de la maison, dans le domaine public, se situe vers l’âge de trois ans dans l’Anti-Atlas et en général au Maroc. Toutefois, l’on trouve des enfants plus petits dehors, lorsqu’ils sont pris en charge par des filles à l’âge de l’école primaire ou par des adolescentes, moins souvent par des garçons ou (...) adolescents : les observations concernent donc des filles de l’Anti-Atlas âgées de 2 à 8 ans, à quelques exceptions près, les jeux de faire semblant, les poupées et autres objets bricolés, et examinent l’impact des jouets industriels sur la fabrication de jouets par les enfants. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, French authors did not ignore the word “éthique,” but neither did they make it play a specific role in their works like they did with “morale,” their preferred term. By contrast, English writers were more likely than their counterparts to distinguish “Ethicks” from “Morals.” Consequently, it is mainly in English-language writings that the separation of the two terms can be found. The key authors invested in refining these distinctions are Locke, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Hume, and (...) Bentham—the last one being the philosopher who enacted the splitting of these two terms. From their meditations gradually emerges a belief in the conditions for a common moral platform and position; in those authors’ estimation, this foundation could properly take the place of mathematical ethical inquiry. Among those exposing utilitarianism, ethics are a matter of calculation, ethical action achievable through mathematical rules. If calculation is still limited with Hutcheson, it becomes subtler still with Bentham, even if the first utilitarian author stays within the parameters of this moral philosophy. Bentham seems to be inspired by Bayesian–Pricean probability calculus, and his main and seminal ideas are developed in “The Axioms of Pathology” at the end of the “Pannomial Fragments.”. (shrink)

L’œuvre de Bentham repose sur quelques paradoxes étonnants. Le premier est que le plaisir est la clé de voûte du système des arts et des sciences et pourtant ce système ne donne lieu à aucune esthétique qui ait l'ampleur de la réflexion de l'auteur sur le droit, la politique, l’éthique, les sciences, les techniques, et même sur la religion. Le second est que l'on a souvent opposé l'utilité à la beauté et bien des auteurs ont vu dans la recherche de (...) l'utilité une enquête incompatible avec la recherche du beau. Mais il n'y a guère de raison à donner pour justifier cette opposition : une chose peut être utile et belle ; une chose belle a au moins l'utilité de sa beauté puisqu'elle produit un plaisir. Le troisième est que l'analyse que Bentham mène à propos du plaisir et de la douleur est assez incertaine ; tantôt le plaisir est tenu pour aussi réel que la douleur, mais, à d'autres moments, la douleur est plus réelle que le plaisir. Le quatrième tient à la difficulté de nier radicalement qu'il y ait des bons goût et des mauvais goûts ; la notion de goût implique cette différence. Enfin, nous avons trouvé si peu de raison qui permette d'exclure les beaux arts du champ de la réflexion utilitariste que nous nous sommes risqués, à partir de quelques éléments donnés par Bentham, à esquisser une esthétique. Il nous paraît toutefois qu'une esthétique utilitariste reste à concevoir. (shrink)

Avec comme réfèrent quelques poèmes, parmi les plus célèbres, en particulier Le voyage de Baudelaire et Barbare de Rimbaud, on se demande si l'on doit substituer à l'idée d'une transgression de la loi du/dans le langage celle d'une tentative de briser l'espace même du symbolique. Mais peut-on, alors, encore envisager d'écrire Le Livre (Mallarmé)?

Dans les écrits posthumes de Merleau-Ponty (en particulier Le visible et l’invisible), il semble que soit convoquée une « expérience » fort différente de celle mise au jour dans la phénoménologie de la perception, celle de la chair. On essaie d’établir, tout à la fois, l’originalité indéniable de ces textes et l’impossibilité, finale, de rompre avec une certaine tradition que l’on symbolise par le référent bergsonien.

Suppose we were to meet with extraterrestrials and that we were able to have a discussion about our respective cultures. At some point, they start asking questions about that something which we call “mathematics”. “What is it?”, they ask. Tough question. How should we answer them?

Les fondements de la théorie du choix rationnel, dans ses multiples déclinaisons (économie théorique, théorie de la décision, théorie des jeux, théorie de l'action que l'on trouve au cœur de la philosophie analytique, etc.), ne sont plus aussi assurés en cette fin du XXe siècle qu'ils semblaient l'être durant, ou immédiatement après, la Seconde Guerre mondiale, lorsqu'un John von Neumann ou un Leonard Savage en posaient les prolégomènes. A la source des difficultés présentes, on trouve l'ambition croissante de la théorie (...) du choix rationnel d'expliquer, et surtout de fonder, des phénomènes très éloignés du champ à l'intérieur duquel elle s'était d'abord confinée. Le défi le plus grand que le choix rationnel s'est fixé à lui-même est de rendre compte de la possibilité du jugement moral dans un monde d'individus isolés, autonomes et intéressés (et notamment de la promesse, de l'engagement, du contrat, de la parole donnée et tenue, de la menace, de la dissuasion crédible et efficace). C'est en tentant de relever ces défis que les théoriciens ont rencontré sur leur chemin, comme autant d'obstacles inattendus, des paradoxes redoutables. Ce livre présente les recherches les plus récentes dans le domaine. Il s'en dégage la thèse que le paradigme de la rationalité est radicalement incomplet. L'idéal de transparence qui est au cœur de la théorie du choix rationnel est incapable de venir à bout de l'extériorité et de l'opacité du collectif. Si elles ne prenaient appui sur des références extérieures qui les guident en les " poussant ", les interactions entre acteurs rationnels seraient en général incapables de produire à elles seules quoi que ce soit de déterminé. Les recherches ici présentées s'attachent à définir ce que sont ces dispositifs collectifs cognitifs qui encadrent et servent de support aux décisions individuelles. Elles s'inscrivent dans cette synergie entre sciences sociales, sciences cognitives et philosophie qui renouvelle aujourd'hui les sciences de l'homme. (shrink)

La référence des termes singuliers, noms propres, descriptions définies, indexicaux, n’est pas tributaire des mêmes critères d’usages. Mais l’ambiguïté y afférente peut être levée dans le cadre d’un discours qui s’auto-désigne. En effet, les indexicaux auto-désignatifs désignent la même référence dans toutes les circonstances. Pour en saisir la pertinence, il faudrait dépasser l’analyse dyadique, héritée de Kaplan, qui distinguait caractère et contenu d’une expression, en recourant plutôt à une approche triadique qui distingue caractère, contexte et mondes possibles.

Przedmiotem pracy jest logika kombinatoryczna, gałąź logiki ufundowana przez tak ich autorów, jak Schönfinkel i Curry, której najbardziej znaczącą cechą jest tworzenie języków formalnych pozbawionych zmiennych. U pierwszym rzędzie przedstawia się pojęcia bazowe tego przedsięwzięcia, tj. teorię kombinatorów i teorię funkcjonalności. Podejmując i kontynuując rezultaty, jakie osiągnął Curry, autor poddaje analizie sposób, w jaki można otrzymać zupełny zbiór aksjomatów dla rachunku zdaniowego intuicjonistycznego, wychodząc od utworzenia zupełnego zbioru kombinatorów pierwotnych.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the role of category theory in the foundations of mathematics. There is a good deal of confusion surrounding this issue. A standard philosophical strategy in the face of a situation of this kind is to draw various distinctions and in this way show that the confusion rests on divergent conceptions of what the foundations of mathematics ought to be. This is the strategy adopted in the present paper. It is divided into 5 (...) sections. We first show that already in the set theoretical framework, there are different dimensions to the expression foundations of. We then explore these dimensions more thoroughly. After a very short discussion of the links between these dimensions, we move to some of the arguments presented for and against category theory in the foundational landscape. We end up on a more speculative note by examining the relationships between category theory and set theory. (shrink)

Jean-Pierre Dupuy, prophet of what he calls "enlightened doomsaying," has long warned that modern society is on a path to self-destruction. In this work, published here as a single volume, the authors present a disturbing and decidedly non-classical reading of Greek tragedy that insists on its radical discontinuity with our own outlook and with our social, aesthetic, and psychological categories.

A formalism is introduced to represent the connective organization of an evolving neuronal network and the effects of environment on this organization by stabilization or degeneration of labile synapses associated with functioning. Learning, or the acquisition of an associative property, is related to a characteristic variability of the connective organization: the interaction of the environment with the genetic program is printed as a particular pattern of such organization through neuronal functioning. An application of the theory to the development of the (...) neuromuscular junction is proposed and the basic selective aspect of learning emphasized. (shrink)

In this paper, we try to establish that some mathematical theories, like K-theory, homology, cohomology, homotopy theories, spectral sequences, modern Galois theory (in its various applications), representation theory and character theory, etc., should be thought of as (abstract) machines in the same way that there are (concrete) machines in the natural sciences. If this is correct, then many epistemological and ontological issues in the philosophy of mathematics are seen in a different light. In this paper, I introduce the idea that some important parts of contemporary pure mathematics are moving away from what I call the extensional point of view. More specifically, these fields are based on criteria of identity that are not extensional. After presenting a few cases, I concentrate on homotopy theory where the situation is particularly clear. Moreover, homotopy types are arguably fundamental entities of geometry, thus of a large portion of mathematics, and potentially to all mathematics, at least according (...) to some speculative research programs.
