Cet ouvrage réunit huit études témoignant, dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire, du renouveau scientifique dans la description et l'explication de l'action. Adoptant tour à tour le point de vue de l'analyse sociologique, de la réflexion philosophique, des sciences économiques et de la théorie des jeux, les auteurs abordent des questions fondamentales pour la compréhension de la conduite individuelle et de l'interaction sociale. Les théories de la décision ont fait progresser, au cours des dernières décennies, la modélisation abstraite de l'action et des (...) situations collectives. Le pari relevé ici consiste à s'interroger sur l'articulation entre la description ou la modélisation d'une part, et la compréhension véritable d'autre part. Les auteurs sont amenés à étudier plus particulièrement le rôle de la connaissance dans l'action individuelle, et la dimension axiologique (ou la rationalité " en valeur ") de la reconnaissance de normes ou de critères pour la conduite. Ces contributions mettent en évidence l'obligation, pour le théoricien, de prendre au sérieux les " raisons de l'action " dont l'acteur lui-même peut prendre conscience. Par là, elles fournissent des outils pour réaliser le projet qui gouverne l'évolution présente de l'individualisme méthodologique : élargir le modèle classique du choix rationnel pour lui permettre d'intégrer les aspects cognitifs et axiologiques de la rationalité pratique. L'ouvrage s'adresse aux sociologues, aux économistes, aux politologues et aux philosophes. Whitehead est une énigme : mathématicien, logicien, il est aussi un métaphysicien de première grandeur. Pour ce scientifique, le but de la pensée spéculative est l'édification de la cosmologie.

Qu'est-ce que l'action? Une rupture dans le cours du temps, une prise de risques, un commencement. L'agent, tel le plongeur quittant le bord, ne peut revenir en arrière ; l'exécution l'engage tout entier, corps et âme ; il doit faire confiance au monde, aux autres et à lui-même. C'est par l'action que la nouveauté entre dans la nature et dans l'histoire. Ces caractères de l'action sont-ils universels ou varient-ils selon les cultures et les époques? Bien qu'il existe différents styles d'action, (...) les modélisations dramatiques (par le récit) et mathématiques (par le calcul) du phénomène en font ressortir l'unité. En même temps, la dualité du dramatique et du mathématique est insurmontable, sans doute parce que l'histoire humaine est tragique et que la tragédie se prête mal au calcul mathématique. L'action nous révèle notre identité, y compris nos faiblesses, et commande notre destin. Cet essai fait le pari que les hommes peuvent faire prévaloir la raison pour régler les conflits. Il considère la notion chrétienne de communion des saints comme une source majeure des essais politiques et scientifiques pour nous faire prendre la mesure de l'unité du genre humain, malgré la tentation de nous enfermer dans des "sociétés closes". "Henri Bergson est élu au Collège de France le 17 mai 1900 et y enseigne jusqu’en 1914. Il fait deux cours : le samedi, où il explique un texte, et le vendredi où il traite de sujets comme "l’idée de cause" (1900-1901), "l’idée de temps" (1901-1902), "l’histoire des théories de la mémoire" (1903-1904), etc. Il ne fait pas cours tous les ans. À trois reprises, il se fait remplacer : en mars 1906 par Couturat (Bergson reprend ses cours à l’automne (...) 1906) ; en 1909-1910 par R. Worms ; entre 1914 et 1921 par Édouard Le Roy. Les événements de sa vie, postérieurs à la publication de L’Évolution créatrice, comportent, notamment, ses missions pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, en Espagne et surtout aux États-Unis, et la participation à la création de l’Institut international de coopération intellectuelle au sein de la Société des Nations. The term “Renaissance” usually applies to a period in European history during which the Greco-Latin culture was rediscovered and modern science started. We show that “the Idea of Renaissance” indicates a universal process: a community (a nation, for example), identifying needs that it does not know how to satisfy by itself, and recognising that another community already satisfies them, tries first to acclimate the external process, and then becomes a creative entity. Several interpretations of this process have already been given: (...) we study three of them: the law of the three states by Auguste Comte, the notion of “a single revolution” in Kant’s Critic of Pure Reason and Critic of Judgement, and the notion of “scientific revolution” by A. A. Cournot. Thus conceived, Renaissance means a challenge in which all cultures are equally involved: discovering, even elsewhere, the means of satisfy needs which are related to scientific knowledge and know-how; trying to assimilate them; and making them productive and indigenous by becoming creative. « On Mathematical Concepts of the Material World » a pour objet la revue systématique des formes mathématiques que les théories physiques possibles revêtiraient si elles exprimaient les relations entre entités réelles dans un univers en devenir. Songeant à l’unification des lois de l’électricité et du magnétisme que les équations de Maxwell réalisent, Whitehead fait un pas de plus et imagine l’unification des lois de l’électromagnétisme et de la gravité : les lois ultimes de l’univers « ne présupposeraient pas la (...) géométrie, elles la créeraient ». L’esprit n’a pas à élaborer par lui-même la mathématisation du réel, mais à percevoir l’armature mathématique cachée du monde de l’expérience. Il n’y a donc pas à disjoindre science et perception mais à réveiller dans l’acte de percevoir les relations mathématiques dormantes.The object of « On Mathematical Concepts of the Material World » is to review systematically the mathematical forms that possible theories in physics would take on if they expressed the relationship between real entities in an evolving universe. Referring to how Maxwell brought together the laws of electricity and of magnetism Whitehead went one step further and imagined the unification of electromagnetism and gravity laws : the ultimate laws of the universe « would not presuppose geometry but create it ». The function of the spirit is not to construct the mathematisation of reality alone, but to perceive its hidden mathematical framework. Depuis quelques années, nos sociétés de plus en plus marquées par les services et les contraintes des sciences et des techniques, voient se tendre les relations entre politiques et savants. Du coup, se trouve posée en termes nouveaux la question assez traditionnelle des rapports entre vérité et autorité. De façon plus urgente, c'est la question de la vérité qui doit être traitée dans la mouvance d'un triple héritage de conceptions : la conception de la vérité comme réalisme; la conception positiviste (...) en réaction au kantisme, et depuis le début des années 60, une conception qui doit redéfinir et repenser le réalisme. L'exploration historique et conceptuelle permet à la fois une critique des pratiques et des illusions de ces trois derniers siècles, et des questions nouvelles quant à l'avenir de la raison tant du côté des sciences que du côté du pouvoir. Car c'est de la commu­nauté humaine et de l'homme qu'il s'agit avant tout, ce qui interdit de faire définitivement l'impasse sur des problèmes qui sont avant tout la responsabilité d '« hommes finis », ce qui induit la nécessité de choisir une éthique et d'adopter une ontologie.For some years our societies, more and more marked by the services and restraints of the sciences and technology, find relations between politicians and scholars strained. As a result, the rather traditional ques­tion of the relationship between truth and authority has been put in new terms. In a more urgent way, it is the question of truth that should be treated in the sphere of a triple inheritance of ideas : the conception of truth as realism, the positivist conception in reaction to Kantianism, and, from the begiming of the 60's, a conception that would redefine and rethink realism. A historical and conceptual exploration allows both a critique of the practices and illusions of these last three centuries, and new questions as regards the future, both on the side of the sciences and on the side of power. For, above all, the concern is with the human community and man, and thus prohibits a definitive impasse concerning these problems, which are, above all, the responsibility of « finite men ». This leads to the necessity of choosing an ethic and of adopting an ontology. (shrink)

En effet, même si les mathématiques constituent un réservoir presque inépuisable de formes (Whitehead), nous sommes bien loin de pouvoir dégager la forme mathématique de tous les types d'action. D'autre part – nous le (...) savons par expérience et les moralistes nous le confirment –, il est difficile de découvrir ce pour quoi l'on est fait. Enfin, la science n'éclaire que très fragmentairement l'ordre causal des choses. Pour surmonter ces obstacles, il faut situer l'action dans une perspective cosmologique. In Islam, martyrdom is mostly conceived as "bearing witness" to faith and God. Martyrdom is also central to the Christian tradition, not only in the form of Christ's Passion or saints faced with persecution and death, but in the duty to lead a good and charitable life. In both religions, the association of religious martyrdom with (...) political terror has a long and difficult history. Johann Michael Haydn (1737–1806), court musician to the prince-archbishop of Salzburg, composed the Missa Sancti Hieronymi in 1777, apparently intended to mark the name-day of his employer: 30 September, the feast-day of St. Jerome. Because of its wind-band scoring, this Mass is unique, not only among Haydn’s Masses, but also in the Mass repertoire of Salzburg, and apparently in that of all late eighteenth-century Austria. The present article discusses the environment in which Haydn functioned and its effect on the practice (...) of church music in Salzburg and generally in Catholic Austria. Haydn’s employer, Archbishop Colloredo, was a proponent of Enlightenment thinking. He expressed in his Hirtenbrief of 1782 ideas opposed to the kind of sacred music then prevalent in Austria, in particular, the orchestral Mass. Reflective of the new Gottesdienstordnung promulgated by Emperor Joseph II, the proposed changes include the introduction of congregational hymns in the vernacular and severe reduction in numbers of liturgies and the amount of music allowed in them. Colloredo finds support for his ideas in the writings of St. Jerome and other church fathers. Given Haydn’s strong Catholic faith and dedication as a composer of sacred music, the article suggests that although he wrote the Missa as a dutiful servant of his employer, he meant it above all as a tribute to St. Jerome. The tragedy of heterosexuality is this: modern straightness dooms once-hopeful, loving couples to share dull, frustrating, and lonely lives together. After all, men are from Mars, women are from Venus, and what’s a heterosexual to do about it? Against this dismal state of affairs, Jane Ward’s The Tragedy of Heterosexuality offers a scholarly, empathetic intervention from the perspective of queer culture. Ward’s book reveals that the titular tragedy is rooted in the misogynistic ideology permeating straight culture, according to which (...) women are at once objects of desire and derision. In a culture animated by this antimony, women and men are very different creatures and, by the same token, they are bound to struggle... (shrink)

It has been pointed out that Gettier case scenarios have deviant realizations and that deviant realizations raise a difficulty for the logical analysis of thought experiments. Grundmann and Horvath have shown that it is possible to rule out deviant realizations by suitably modifying the scenario of a Gettier-style thought experiment. They hypothesize further that the enriched scenario corresponds to the way expert epistemologists implicitly interpret the original one. However, no precise account of this implicit enrichment is offered, which makes the (...) proposal somewhat ad hoc. Drawing on pragmatic theory, I argue that the content of Grundmann and Horvath’s modified scenario corresponds to the default interpretation of the original scenario and that epistemological expertise is not required to access the deviance-proof interpretation. This Default Interpretation proposal offers thus a more general and independently motivated solution to the Problem of Deviant Realizations. (shrink)

The Emergence of Word-Meaning in Early China makes an innovative contribution to studies of language by historicizing the Chinese notion that words have "meaning" (content independent of instances of use). Rather than presuming that the concept of word-meaning had always existed, Jane Geaney explains how and why it arose in China. To account for why a normative term (yi, "duty, morality, appropriateness") came to be used for "meanings" found in dictionaries, Geaney examines interrelated patterns of word usage threading through (...) and across a wide range of genres. These patterns show that by the first millennium, as textual production exploded—and as radically different writing forms (in Buddhist sutras) were encountered—yi already functioned as an externally accessible "model" for semantic interpretation of texts and sayings. The book has far-reaching implications. Because the idea of word-meaning is fundamental to theorizing, the book illuminates not only semantic ideas and the normativity of language in Early China, but also aspects of early Chinese philosophy and intellectual history. As the internet supplants one form of media (print), thereby reducing knowledge to vast digital databases, so too, this book explains, two thousand years ago a culture that prized oral and visual balance became an "empire of the text.". In _Vibrant Matter_ the political theorist Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events. Toward that end, she theorizes a “vital materiality” that runs through and across bodies, both human and nonhuman. Bennett explores how political analyses of public events might change were we (...) to acknowledge that agency always emerges as the_ _effect of ad hoc configurations of human and nonhuman forces. She suggests that recognizing that agency is distributed this way, and is not solely the province of humans, might spur the cultivation of a more responsible, ecologically sound politics: a politics less devoted to blaming and condemning individuals than to discerning the web of forces affecting situations and events. Bennett examines the political and theoretical implications of vital materialism through extended discussions of commonplace things and physical phenomena including stem cells, fish oils, electricity, metal, and trash. She reflects on the vital power of material formations such as landfills, which generate lively streams of chemicals, and omega-3 fatty acids, which can transform brain chemistry and mood. Along the way, she engages with the concepts and claims of Spinoza, Nietzsche, Thoreau, Darwin, Adorno, and Deleuze, disclosing a long history of thinking about vibrant matter in Western philosophy, including attempts by Kant, Bergson, and the embryologist Hans Driesch to name the “vital force” inherent in material forms. Bennett concludes by sketching the contours of a “green materialist” ecophilosophy. (shrink)

Firms and industries increasingly subscribe to voluntary codes of conduct. These self-regulatory governance systems can be effective in establishing a more sustainable and inclusive global economy. However, these codes can also be largely symbolic, reactive measures to quell public criticism. Cross-sector alliances (between for-profit and nonprofit actors) present a learning platform for infusing participants with greater incentives to be socially responsible. They can provide multinationals new capabilities that allow them to more closely ally social responsibility with economic performance. This paper (...) examines learning facilitators in cross-sector alliances that enrich corporate understanding of stakeholder concerns. It suggests that these organizational learning experiments can translate into globally responsible practices and processes that improve the content and effectiveness of voluntary corporate codes.
