The commentary raises political questions about the ways in which data has been constituted as an object vested with certain powers, influence, and rationalities. We place the emergence and transformation of professional practices such as ‘data science’, ‘data journalism’, ‘data brokerage’, ‘data mining’, ‘data storage’, and ‘data analysis’ as part of the reconfiguration of a series of fields of power and knowledge in the public and private accumulation of data. Data politics asks questions about the ways in which data has (...) become such an object of power and explores how to critically intervene in its deployment as an object of knowledge. It is concerned with the conditions of possibility of data that involve things, language, and people that together create new worlds. We define ‘data politics’ as both the articulation of political questions about these worlds and the ways in which they provoke subjects to govern themselves and others by making rights claims. We contend that without understanding these conditions of possibility – of worlds, subjects and rights – it would be difficult to intervene in or shape data politics if by that it is meant the transformation of data subjects into data citizens. Analyses of contemporary surveillance are considered in relation to the growing liquidity of contemporary social relations. When state surveillance is revealed by Edward Snowden to depend on consumer data, this illustrates Bauman’s observations about today’s rapidly mobile and “extraterritorial” power. Such power is increasingly based on highly asymmetrical visibility of watcher and watched but paradoxically also depends on “panoptic selfie-surveillance” which complicates both analysis and ethics in significant ways. Strongly panoptic power, where it still exists, is largely at the margins, (...) in Bauman’s writing, as seen for instance his gesturing towards Loic Wacquant’s. Here, as in Didier Bigo’s “banopticon” the power is exclusionary rather than inclusionary — which was the form of the original panopticon design. But the soft forms of “selfie surveillance” also have panoptic dimensions that demand consideration. The ethical questions now foregrounded go far beyond questions of “privacy”, narrowly conceived, to issues of social inclusion and democratic participation. (shrink)

Meteorology is not one of the most discussed topics in Paracelsus studies, although it is closely linked to both Paracelsus’ medicine and cosmology. Furthermore, it appears to be at the very core of Paracelsus’ famous matter theory of three chymical principles, mercury, sulphur and salt, known as the tria prima. By discussing prominent examples of Paracelsus’ explanations on how the tria prima operate within the stars, this article shows how the Swiss physician conceived meteorology within his own body of knowledge, (...) obviously constructed in opposition to the Aristotelian-scholastic tradition, how he based it on a peculiar interpretation of the Biblical creation story, and made it the proper laboratory of his chymical matter theory, applying it first systematically to the field of natural philosophy, especially to celestial phenomena, even before using it for his medical theory in his later writings. Contemporary political theory (CPT) has approached questions of plurality and diversity by drawing rather implicitly on anthropological accounts of difference. This was the case with the ‘cultural turn’, which significantly shaped theories of multiculturalism. Similarly, the current ‘ontological turn’ is gaining influence and leaving a marked impact on CPT. I examine the recent turn and assess both the possibilities it offers and the challenges it poses for decentering CPT and opening radical, decolonial avenues for thinking difference otherwise. I take Paul (...) Nadasdy's critique of the ontological turn as an invitation to reflect on the methodological precepts that inform how the field frames the scope and limits of comparison. In pursuit of this, I examine the Zapatistas’ notion of a ‘world of many worlds’, which provides a way of approaching difference that captures the generative aspects of the ontological turn while avoiding the pitfalls of relativism and political inertia. I argue that the Zapatistas’ insights offer ethical guidance towards social and ecological thriving. Ultimately, my goal is to move CPT towards a more capacious form of making sense of what is out there in the world, and thus make room for better ways of inhabiting the Earth. (shrink)

This paper first investigates logical characterizations of different structures of opposition that extend the square of opposition in a way or in another. Blanché’s hexagon of opposition is based on three disjoint sets. There are at least two meaningful cubes of opposition, proposed respectively by two of the authors and by Moretti, and pioneered by philosophers such as J. N. Keynes, W. E. Johnson, for the former, and H. Reichenbach for the latter. These cubes exhibit four and six squares of (...) opposition respectively. We clarify the differences between these two cubes, and discuss their gradual extensions, as well as the one of the hexagon when vertices are no longer two-valued. The second part of the paper is dedicated to the use of these structures of opposition for discussing the comparison of two items. Comparing two items usually involves a set of relevant attributes whose values are compared, and may be expressed in terms of different modalities such as identity, similarity, difference, opposition, analogy. Recently, J.-Y. Béziau has proposed an “analogical hexagon” that organizes the relations linking these modalities. Elementary comparisons may be a matter of degree, attributes may not have the same importance. The paper studies in which ways the structure of the hexagon may be preserved in such gradual extensions. As another illustration of the graded hexagon, we start with the hexagon of equality and inequality due to R. Blanché and extend it with fuzzy equality and fuzzy inequality. Besides, the cube induced by a tetra-partition can account for the comparison of two items in terms of preference, reversed preference, indifference and non-comparability even if these notions are a matter of degree. The other cube, which organizes the relations between the different weighted qualitative aggregation modes, is more relevant for the attribute-based comparison of items in terms of similarity. In political philosophy one often encounters claims on behalf of pluralism, yet there is anything but a consensus over the meaning of this fundamental concept. It is true that there is no single pluralist tradition; rather, there are different pluralist traditions within different domains of practical reason. No one would object, however, to the notion that Isaiah Berlin’s “value pluralism” is a genuine form of meta-ethical pluralism. Charles Taylor is another philosopher who is often called a pluralist, but I shall (...) argue that this is a mistake. The aim of this work is to revisit the proposal made by Dag Westerståhl a decade ago when he provided a modern reading of the traditional square of opposition and of related structures. We propose a formalization of this modern view and contrast it with the classical one. We discuss what may be a modern hexagon of opposition and a modern cube, and show their interest in particular for relating quantitative expressions.

En este artículo, se presentan algunos acercamientos a las dimensiones culturales del narcotráfico en el panorama de las ciencias sociales y las humanidades en América Latina, con énfasis en el contexto colombiano. El objetivo es constatar cómo aparecen diferentes modos de abordar la relación narcotráfico-cultura a través de nociones utilizadas como herramientas conceptuales que enfatizan características específicas de esta relación. Entre ellas se destacan la noción de _narcocultura_ que, por una parte, se refiere al conjunto de prácticas que componen un (...) cierto modo de vida y, por otra, en el sentido de los registros estéticos que se producen a partir del contexto del narcotráfico. Sobresale la noción de _narcoestética_ como derivación categorial específica asociada a representaciones y formas culturales como narcoliteratura, narcoarquitectura, narcoseries, entre otras. A través de esta revisión de las diferentes caracterizaciones que se han elaborado acerca de la relación narcotráfico-cultura, podremos sopesar los alcances y desafíos de estudiar algunas de las dimensiones culturales del narcotráfico. Este artículo fue elaborado como parte del ejercicio de documentación para la tesis doctoral _Narcotráfico y cultura: Habitus y vida cotidiana en la Medellín contemporánea _en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, donde se revisaron principalmente artículos de revistas académicas, libros, capítulos de libro y tesis de posgrado. A partir de esta revisión, se llega a la conclusión de que la narcocultura como objeto de estudio en el contexto latinoamericano se comprende como un modo vida y como una concepción estética que no es atribuible exclusivamente a los narcotraficantes, sino que se inserta en la construcción de unas narrativas y representaciones que en parte se alimentan de medios de comunicación y de formas artísticas. Although it is usually assumed that in Michel Foucault’s work biopolitics is a politics which has life for its object, a closer analysis of the courses he gave at the Collège de France on this topic, as well as of the other seminars and papers of this period, shows that he took a quite different direction, restricting it to the regulation of population. The aim of this article is to return to the origins of the concept and to confront the (...) issue of life as such. This implies four shifts with respect to Foucault’s theory: Politics is not only about the rules of the game of governing, but also about its stakes. More than the power over life, contemporary societies are characterized by the legitimacy they attach to life. Rather than a normalizing process, the intervention in lives is a production of inequalities. The politics of life, then, is not only a question of governmentality and technologies, but also of meaning and values. The discussion is grounded on a series of empirical investigations conducted in France and South Africa on how life and lives are treated in our world. (shrink)

Numerous labor-management issues possess ethical dimensions and pose ethical questions. In this article, the authors discuss four labor-management issues that present important contemporary problems: union organizing, labor-management negotiations, employee involvement programs, and union obligations of fair representation. In the authors view, labor and management too often view their ethical obligations as beginning and ending at the law''s boundaries. Contemporary business realities suggest that cooperative and enlightened modes of interaction between labor and management seem appropriate.

Tout au long de son oeuvre, depuis Réflexions sur la question gay, en 1999, jusqu'à Principes d'une pensée critique, en 2016, mais déjà dans l'ouvrage biographique qu'il a consacré à Michel Foucault en 1989, Didier Eribon s'est attaché à élaborer une théorie historique, sociale et politique de la subjectivité : il s'agit de comprendre comment les individus et les groupes sont produits comme des sujets assujettis par de multiples formes de domination, ce qu'il appelle les " verdicts sociaux ", (...) et comment ils peuvent résister aux pouvoirs et travailler à la transformation sociale. Une telle démarche ne saurait se développer en se tenant simplement à l'écart de la doctrine psychanalytique. Elle doit entrer en conflit avec celle-ci, et mettre en question non seulement ses velléités normatives et ses tentations autoritaires, qui sont inscrites dans sa logique même, mais aussi son architecture notionnelle et sa conception du psychisme et de l'inconscient. C'est à cet effort pour " échapper à la psychanalyse " que sont consacrés les essais rassemblés dans ce volume. Didier Eribon est philosophe et sociologue. Il y a quelques années, la mère de Didier Eribon est entrée en maison de retraite. Après plusieurs mois au cours desquels elle a peu à peu perdu son autonomie physique et cognitive, Didier Eribon et ses frères ont dû se résoudre à l'installer, malgré ses réticences, dans un établissement médicalisé. Mais le choc de l'entrée en maison de retraite fut trop brutal et, quelques semaines seulement après son arrivée, elle y est décédée. Après la mort de sa (...) mère, Didier Eribon reprend le travail d'exploration personnelle et théorique qu'il avait entrepris dans Retour à Reims après la mort de son père. Il analyse le déclin de sa mère, ce qui l'amène à réfléchir sur la vieillesse et la maladie, sur nos rapports aux personnes âgées et à la mort, mais aussi sur l'expérience du vieillissement. Il s'interroge également sur les conditions de l'accueil des personnes dépendantes. Il montre que si l'expérience du vieillissement nous est très difficile à penser, c'est parce qu'il s'agit d'une expérience-limite dans la philosophie occidentale, dont l'ensemble des concepts semblent se fonder sur une exclusion de la vieillesse. Eribon reparcourt également la vie de sa mère, et notamment les périodes où elle était femme de ménage, ouvrière puis retraitée, la saisissant dans toute sa complexité, de sa participation aux grèves à son racisme obsessionnel. Il conclut sa démarche en faisant de la vieillesse le point d'appui d'une réflexion sur la politique : comment pourraient se mobiliser des personnes qui n'ont plus de mobilité ni de capacité à prendre la parole et donc à dire "nous"? Les personnes âgées peuvent-elles parler si personne ne parle pour elles, pour faire entendre leur voix?"--Page 4 of cover. (shrink)

Les attaques de Nietzsche à l'endroit du christianisme et de son fondateur sont connues ; on les dit décisives. A travers la voix des papes contemporains qui ont tous médité devant le Suaire, il est possible de pressentir la réponse que le Crucifié apporte à la critique nietzschéenne. Une réponse fondée sur la miséricorde qui éclaire en profondeur le sens du nihilisme dont Nietzsche a voulu être le prophète, et dans lequel se trouve plongé notre monde. (shrink)

Résumé La plupart des études, analyses et critiques portant sur l’évaluation s’attachent à la gouvernance des affaires humaines, autrement dit la part managériale et technocratique de la politique. En revanche, on s’est peu efforcé de comprendre le gouvernement des êtres humains, et singulièrement les dispositifs et procédures d’évaluation des vies. C’est à cette anthropologie biopolitique qu’est consacré le présent article. La distinction entre les dimensions morale et éthique de l’évaluation permet d’aborder successivement deux questions générales : comment on juge les (...) vies ; ce que valent des vies. L’évaluation morale concerne les formes de jugement sur le bien et le vrai à l’œuvre dans les justices distributive, rétributive et attributive au-delà des principes dont elles se réclament. L’évaluation éthique met à l’épreuve l’égalité des êtres humains et le consensus autour de la vie comme bien suprême en révélant les profondes disparités de fait dans l’appréciation des existences. Résumé On observe une tendance accrue en science économique à favoriser les méthodes formelles, car elles sont selon certains plus « rigoureuses », et (donc) plus « scientifiques » (Lawson 1997; Fullbrook 2004). Mais cela ne va pas de soi. Cette tendance est plutôt préoccupante, pour plusieurs raisons. En effet, l’attribution a priori d’un statut supérieur à une méthode donnée crée un climat anti intellectuel peu favorable au progrès scientifique. Par ailleurs, l’orientation méthodologique en question se propage auprès des autres (...) sciences sociales. Si les questions de méthodologie, bien que centrales pour le bon avancement de la science, sont trop souvent reléguées au domaine de la philosophie des sciences, ceci est l’occasion de pointer à nouveau leur importance. Dans cet article, je propose d’examiner 1) quelles peuvent être les limites de l’usage des méthodes formelles en sciences sociales, d’après les apports du Réalisme Critique et/ou de la Cambridge School, et 2) l’étendue du phénomène méthodologique en question, tenant compte de sa composante dogmatique. Enfin, j’encourage la communauté scientifique à (re)trouver une démarche réflexive en matière de méthodologie, et à constituer des alliances interdisciplinaires visant à préserver la liberté intellectuelle qui sous tend tout progrès scientifique.
