Lucid dreaming and ventromedial versus dorsolateral prefrontal task performance.Michelle Neider, Edward F. Pace-Schott, Erica Forselius, Brian Pittman & Peter T. Morgan - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (2):234-244.
Activity in the prefrontal cortex may distinguish the meta-awareness experienced during lucid dreams from its absence in normal dreams. To examine a possible relationship between dream lucidity and prefrontal task performance, we carried out a prospective study in 28 high school students. Participants performed the Wisconsin Card Sort and Iowa Gambling tasks, then for 1 week kept dream journals and reported sleep quality and lucidity-related dream characteristics. Participants who exhibited a greater degree of lucidity performed significantly better on the task (...)

    Punishment and Race.John P. Pittman - 1997 - Utilitas 9 (1):115.
This article criticizes the standard way philosophers pose issues about the core practices of criminal justice institutions. Attempting to get at some of the presuppositions of posing these issues in terms of punishment, I construct a revised version of Rawls's case, a revision based on actual features of contemporary criminal justice practices in the USA. In addressing the implications of, as I call it, some connections are made to current philosophical discussions about race. I conclude with brief remarks about the (...)

Reputational Implications for Partners After a Major Audit Failure: Evidence from China.Xianjie He, Jeffrey Pittman & Oliver Rui - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 138 (4):703-722.
We analyze whether audit partners suffered damage to their professional reputations with the demise of Zhongtianqin, formerly the largest audit firm in China, after an audit failure enabled a major client, Yinguangxia, to fraudulently exaggerate its earnings in a high-profile scandal resembling the Andersen–Enron events in the US. This involves evaluating whether the reputational damage sustained by partners implicated in the scandal spreads to other partners in the same audit firm. We isolate whether impaired reputation impedes partners who were not (...)

Perception Without Awareness: Cognitive, Clinical, and Social Perspectives.Robert F. Bornstein & Thane S. Pittman - 1992 - Guilford.
This landmark volume brings together the work of the world's leading researchers in sublimated perception. This compilation marks a fundamental shift in the current study of subliminal effects: No longer in question is the notion that perception without awareness occurs. Now, the emphasis is on elucidating the parameters of subliminal effects and understanding the conditions under which stimuli perceived without awareness significantly influence affect, cognition, and behavior. PERCEPTION WITHOUT AWARENESS firmly establishes subliminal perception within the mainstream of psychological science. Well (...)

Attempting to get at some of the presuppositions of posing these issues in terms of punishment, I construct a revised version of Rawls's ‘telishment’ case, a revision based on actual features of contemporary criminal justice practices in the USA. The Evolution of Mind, Brain, and Culture.Gary Hatfield & Holly Pittman (eds.) - 2013 - University of Pennsylvania Press.
Descartes boldly claimed: "I think, therefore I am." But one might well ask: Why do we think? How? When and why did our human ancestors develop language and culture? In other words, what makes the human mind human? _Evolution of Mind, Brain, and Culture_ offers a comprehensive and scientific investigation of these perennial questions. Fourteen essays bring together the work of archaeologists, cultural and physical anthropologists, psychologists, philosophers, geneticists, a neuroscientist, and an environmental scientist to explore the evolution of the (...)

Individual Auditor Social Responsibility and Audit Quality: Evidence from China.Jeffrey Pittman, Baolei Qi, Yi Si, Zi-Tian Wang & Chongwu Xia - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-26.
Capitalizing on a unique setting in China where auditors disclose their prosocial activities, we examine the role that auditor social responsibility plays in shaping their performance. In one direction, behavior consistency theory implies that individual auditors exhibiting more social commitment in their off-the-job activities behave similarly during engagements, enhancing the quality of their audits. In the other direction, accounting firms’ internal structures along with external disciplinary forces mute the impact of heterogeneous auditor characteristics on their performance. In a staggered difference-in-differences (...)

    "Sources," "Component Parts": Lenin's Rhetoric of Enlightenment.John P. Pittman - 1995 - Science and Society 59 (3):384 - 401.
Lenin's short essay, "Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism," has a wide popular readership and reputation, but is relatively neglected by commentators. Lenin's writing effects a rhetoric of enlightenment, presenting Marxism as an integral and comprehensive doctrine. A close analysis uncovers the metaphorics of Lenin's presentation of Marxism. Competing conceptions of enlightenment underpin what Lenin identifies as the "three component parts" of Marxism.

Straight from the Source? Media Framing of Creative Crowd Labor and Resultant Ethical Concerns.Kim Bartel Sheehan & Matthew Pittman - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 154 (2):575-585.
Increasing numbers of marketers are turning to the crowd—members of the public engaged with brands via the Internet—to develop marketing and advertising campaigns. Some marketers use social media to connect directly with customers, while others use crowdsourcing agencies to harness the power of crowd labor. As more members of the public become aware of creative crowdsourcing, they look to the media to understand more about it. As a result, it is important to examine how the media currently frame creative crowdsourcing (...)

Does Religion Matter to Equity Pricing?Sadok El Ghoul, Omrane Guedhami, Yang Ni, Jeffrey Pittman & Samir Saadi - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 111 (4):491-518.
For a sample comprising 36,105 U.S. firm-year observations from 1985 to 2008, we find that firms located in more religious counties enjoy cheaper equity financing costs. This result is robust to a battery of sensitivity tests, including alternative assumptions and model specifications, additional controls for noise in analyst forecasts, and various approaches to addressing endogeneity. In another set of tests, we find that the equity pricing role that religion plays comes predominantly from Mainline Protestants. We also document that the effect (...)

    J.
