In this paper I will examine a difficulty (aporia), which Aristotle raises in Physics B 5.197a20-25: whether fortuitous things can be held as causes of luck. I will show the meaning of the passage and its relevance within the context of Aristotelian extended analysis of the notions of ``luck'' and ``chance''. I will claim that, in facing the problem, Aristotle has a twofold aim. Firstly, he wants to explain why luck is, after having enquired whether it exists and what it (...) is. Secondly, he wants to prevent his pupils, among others, from denying causal efficacy to luck, by reducing fortuitous events, that are the result of accidental causes, to the action of per se causes, such as nature and human deliberation. Lucretius devotes some sections of his De rerum natura to the treatment of dreams. He is particularly interested in the phenomenon of dream deception, namely the belief that the dreamt object is the object itself. This psychological phenomenon has some both unwanted and philosophically interesting implications. Firstly, from an ethical point of view, it can stimulate uncontrolled worries and feelings in the dreamer that undermine his/her mental tranquility and health. Secondly, from a physiological perspective, it seems to reveal a failure (...) in the mechanism undergoing the formation of mental representation. Thirdly, from the epistemological point of view, it seems to compromise the veracity of mental representations. This paper aims to explain how Lucretius dealt with this phenomenon. In particular, it will show how he succeeded, on the one hand, to explain the nature and the origin of dream deception and of its emotional aspect, and, on the other hand, to preserve the informative contents of dreams and their correspondence to reality. For this purpose the present essay will address the following issues: which is the condition of the soul and of the mind while sleeping; what kind of mental activity is dreaming; which is the nature and the origin of the simulacra responsible for dreams; which is the contents of dreams and how dream deception comes about; and finally why and how dream deception emotionally effects the dreamer. En plus de concevoir la vue et la pensée comme des processus empiriques capables de reproduire les caractéristiques des corps, Épicure reconnaît un processus psychophysique intermédiaire par le biais duquel les phantasiai ou représentations sont produites dans l’esprit et synthétisent les caractéristiques des objets sensibles. L’objectif de cet article est de monter qu’Épicure a retravaillé la doctrine de Démocrite dans cette direction, à la lumière de la critique aristotélicienne de certaines théories de la perception et de sa réflexion sur la (...) formation du phantasma. Nous étudions le processus physiologique à l’origine de la phantasia chez Épicure, et nous montrons son lien avec le processus psychophysique adopté par Aristote pour expliquer la représentation. Aristote estime qu’une vie consacrée à gagner de l’argent ne mérite pas d’être vécue, dans la mesure où elle est sujette à des contraintes et fondée sur une conception pervertie de la richesse. Cependant, il assigne à l’argent une valeur instrumentale en tant qu’il est indispensable au bonheur, et il reconnaît qu’il y a des tendances naturelles à la richesse en tout agent. Cet article se propose de clarifier les thèses d’Aristote concernant la fonction de la richesse dans son rapport (...) à une vie bonne, concernant ce qui garantit l’usage correct des biens et comment il est possible de promouvoir la pratique de la chrématistique naturelle face à l’extension des formes perverties de recherche du profit. L’article entend ensuite montrer quelles vertus sont liées à la richesse – générosité, magnificence et justice ou équité – et comment elles se rattachent aux vices opposés – c’est-à-dire : prodigalité et avarice, tendance dépensière et pingrerie, et injustice ou inéquité. L’intention de cette étude est d’expliquer pourquoi l’enquête aristotélicienne sur les bonnes et mauvaises habitudes liées à l’usage de la richesse est complémentaire de l’enquête sur la genèse des phénomènes économiques, et pourquoi elle vise à garantir dans la pratique une chrématistique parfaitement intégrée à l’éthique et à la politique. There is ample evidence from literature and clinical practice indicating mathematical difficulties in individuals with ADHD, even when there is no concomitant diagnosis of developmental dyscalculia. What factors underlie these difficulties is still an open question. Research on dyscalculia and neurotypical development suggests visual perception of numerosity (the number sense) as a building block for math learning. Participants with lower numerosity estimation thresholds (higher precision) are often those with higher math capabilities. Strangely, the role of numerosity perception in math skills (...) in ADHD has been neglected, leaving open the question whether math difficulties in ADHD also originate from a deficitary visual number sense. In the current study we psychophysically measured numerosity thresholds and accuracy in a sample of children/adolescents with ADHD, but not concomitant dyscalculia (N = 20, 8–16 years). Math abilities were also measured by tasks indexing different mathematical competences. Numerosity performance and math scores were then compared to those obtained from an age-matched control group (N = 20). Bayesian statistics indicated no difference between ADHD and controls on numerosity perception, despite many of the symbolic math tasks being impaired in participants with ADHD. Moreover, the math deficits showed by the group with ADHD remained substantial even when numerosity thresholds were statistically regressed out. Overall, these results indicate that math difficulties in ADHD are unlikely to originate from an impaired visual number sense. (shrink)

The face is a powerful source to make inferences about one’s trustworthiness. Recent studies demonstrated that facial trustworthiness is influenced by the level of threat conveyed by the visual scene in which faces are embedded: untrustworthy-looking faces are more likely judged as untrustworthy when shown in threatening scenes. Here, we explore whether this face-context congruency effect is specific to the negative pole of the threat-trust domain. Experiment 1 (N = 89) focused on the differential impact of positive vs. negative face-context (...) congruency within the domains of threat and trust. Negative congruency (i.e. untrustworthy-looking faces in threatening contexts) led to more extreme attributions as opposed to positive congruency (i.e. trustworthy-looking faces in reassuring contexts). Experiment 2 (N = 120) replicated these findings by further showing their domain-specificity. The negativity bias was found in the threat-trust domain, but not when extroverted- vs. introverted-looking faces appeared in happy vs. sad context scenes. Experiment 3 (N = 154, pre-registered) replicated the pattern observed in Experiment 1 while controlling for the extent to which both threatening and reassuring context stimuli were related to the human action. We discussed the theoretical implications of these results for understanding how contextual information is integrated into the evaluation of facial trustworthiness. (shrink)

Frege's definition of the real numbers, as envisaged in the second volume of Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, is fatally flawed by the inconsistency of Frege's ill-fated Basic Law V. We restate Frege's definition in a consistent logical framework and investigate whether it can provide a logical foundation of real analysis. Our conclusion will deem it doubtful that such a foundation along the lines of Frege's own indications is possible at all.

Prosocial organizations represent key actors in the quest to promote positive change, foster social impact, and revitalize cities. Notwithstanding their importance in tackling the increasing challenges threatening our society (e.g., pollution, socio-economic inequalities), these actors may not be perceived as salient in the eyes of different stakeholders, and thus their work may be jeopardized by multiple forms of resistance. Scant attention in research has been devoted to understand how prosocial organizations may acquire saliency and navigate these forms of resistance while (...) pursuing urban revitalization. We address this gap by engaging in a qualitative investigation of a Sicilian cultural center. We found that the prosocial organization in our study could navigate different occurrences of resistance and acquire saliency by enacting mechanisms that leveraged the engagement of supporting stakeholders and the idiosyncratic characteristics of place. Our study contributes to the literature about urban revitalization, prosocial organizations, and stakeholder theory—while also complementing research investigating the role of place in management. Gendered socialization has prompted numerous attempts to redefine what counts as an autonomous choice. However, there is strong disagreement among feminist theorists over the criteria to identify cases of autonomy impairment _vis-à-vis_ the embeddedness of individuals in patriarchal cultures. I argue that this focus on choice and autonomy has often neglected the costs of non-compliance to social norms and the trade-offs that women make to flourish within their community. Even if we were to find an effective way to determine whether (...) a self-regarding choice calls for state interference because of its socialized nature, we would still lack a sufficient justification for interfering with women’s choices. To justify political action, my claim is that we should also look at the effects that preference interference would have on women within their societal context. Consequently, I develop a non-ideal feminist account aimed chiefly at analysing the costs of proposed feminist change. I shall focus in particular on women’s engagement with practices of body modification for the sake of conforming to gendered standards of appearance, such as cosmetic surgery and hymen restoration. In both cases, I argue that blanket bans risk backfiring into a form of double-jeopardy for those who are already the most vulnerable to gendered oppression, hence they are not justified. However, this does not imply passively accepting the status quo but urges us to reconsider new ways to offset transition costs, making resistance to social norms a collectively shared endeavour rather than a burden that exclusively befalls the most vulnerable. Toda la vida de San Agustín fue una intensa búsqueda de la definición del hombre. Recorrió en sus meditaciones las tres direcciones que acotan el campo de la investigación antropológica: el ser del hombre, su perduración más allá de la vida y el sentido de su existencia. Él descubrió que la naturaleza del hombre es “dialéctica”: es un ser que está en un mundo hecho para él, pero él es hecho para Dios. Como no hay una adecuación entre su ‘ser (...) en’ y su ‘ser para’, el hombre se convierte en un discurso abierto infinitamente, cuyo final trasciende sus posibilidades. Además, el hombre ocupa un lugar intermedio en la configuración ontológica del universo agustiniano, un medio entre la Nada y el Todo, entre el cuerpo y el Creador del sí mismo y del cuerpo. De hecho, en la Enarración al Salmo 109, explica así la condición mortal, finita, del ser humano: “Como el torrente recoge las lluvias y se hincha, salta, se despeña, y corriendo acaba su carrera, así es todo el curso de la mortalidad… el género humano, de lo oculto va apareciendo y corre; con la muerte otra vez se oculta. En el intermedio resuena y pasa”. Es decir, el hombre es un murmullo entre dos abismos. Agustine of Hippo and human natureThe life of St. Augustine was an intense search for the definition of man. He studied the three directions that delimit the field of anthropological research in his meditations: the being of man, his endurance beyond life, and the meaning of their existence. He discovered that the nature of man is "dialectical": he is a being that is in a world made for him, but he is made for God. As there is not a match between 'being in' and 'being for', the man becomes a speech open infinitely, the end of which transcends its possibilities. Furthermore, humankind has an intermediate place in the ontological configuration of the Augustinian universe, a medium between nothing and everything, between the body and the creator of the self, and of the body. In fact, in the Enarracion to the Psalm 109, explains the mortal and finite condition of the human being: "As the stream collects rain and swells, jumps, falls, and running ends its career, so is the entire course of mortality... the mankind, from the occult will appear and run; with death again is hidden. El libro engloba una serie de artículos acerca de la Filosofía del Proceso, tratando de responder a varias preguntas fundamentales: ¿sigue vigente la noción de sustancia para dar cuenta de la realidad? ¿Qué significa que la realidad es procesual, si es que acaso es así? Otro hilo conductor proviene del diálogo con Whitehead. Se incluyen enfoques que abarcan diferentes épocas históricas, desde la antiguedad, la época medieval, hasta las posturas más recientes.

En uno de los últimos capítulos de su obra Verdad y Método , Gadamer realiza una “acuñación del concepto de lenguaje a lo largo de la historia del pensamiento occidental”, y al llegar a la Edad Media, sorprende con la consideración del tema teológico de la ‘encarnación del Verbo’ para explicar la relación entre pensamiento y lenguaje. No obstante, este recurso le permite elaborar una argumentación en apoyo a su teoría ontológico-hermenéutica del lenguaje. La analogía entre el tema teológico y (...) el modo de ser del lenguaje, ya la pensó San Agustín y la registró en su libro De Trinitate . Ahí explica la naturaleza sustancial del verbo interior , y el modo particular en que éste sigue el proceso que conduce a su encarnación en vox , sin perderse o transformarse en mero signo convencional. En virtud de la relación que el verbo interior guarda con las notitias , con las Ideas en el Verbo, y con las esencias de las cosas físicas de este mundo, se logra una interesante y coherente ontologización del lenguaje, que servirá de inspiración a Gadamer. Gadamer and the substantial equality of thought and language in St. Augustine.In one of the last chapters of his book Truth and Method , Gadamer does a "coining of the concept of language throughout the history of Western thought", and when reaching the study of the Middle Ages, he surprises his readers by considering the theological issue of the 'incarnation of the Verb" to explain the relationship between thought and language. However, this resource allows him to develop an argument in support of his ontological- hermeneutical theory of language. The analogy between theological theme and mode of being of language was already thought by Saint Augustine and recorded in his book On the Trinity . There he elaborates on the substantial nature of the inside or internal verb , and the particular way in which it undergoes the process that leads to its incarnation into vox , neither getting lost nor becoming a mere conventional sign. By ways of the connection between the interior verb with notitias, with the ideas in the Verb, and with the essence of physical things in this world, an interesting and coherent ontologization of language it achieved, which would later inspire Gadamer. In this paper we present a sequent calculus for propositional dynamic logic built using an enriched version of the tree-hypersequent method and including an infinitary rule for the iteration operator. We prove that this sequent calculus is theoremwise equivalent to the corresponding Hilbert-style system, and that it is contraction-free and cut-free. All results are proved in a purely syntactic way.

Conversational negation often behaves differently from negation as a logical operator: when rejecting a state of affairs, it does not present all members of the complement set as equally plausible alternatives, but it rather suggests some of them as more plausible than others (e.g., “This is not a dog, it is a wolf/*screwdriver”). Entities that are semantically similar to a negated entity tend to be judged as better alternatives (Kruszewski et al., 2016). In fact, Kruszewski et al. (2016) show that (...) the cosine similarity scores between the distributional semantics representations of a negated noun and its potential alternatives are highly correlated with the negated noun-alternatives human plausibility ratings. In a series of cloze tasks, we show that negation likewise restricts the production of plausible alternatives to similar entities. Furthermore, completions to negative sentences appear to be even more restricted than completions to an affirmative conjunctive context, hinting at a peculiarity of negation. (shrink)

Il tema della violenza sembra essere la chiave per definire e interpretare la tormentata storia della Colombia. Ciò si riflette anche nell'ampia produzione scientifica sulle cause, la cronologia e i metodi con cui tale una simile violenza è stata perpetuata. Nel 2016, il governo colombiano e le Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) hanno firmato un accordo di pace dopo decenni di conflitto armato, ma la violenza e la questione della terra continuano a rappresentare una sfida per una reale implementazione (...) dell'accordo. Uno dei capitoli più drammatici della storia della violenza in Colombia è quello che riguarda lo sterminio della Unión Patriótica, il partito nato nel 1984 dopo l'accordo di pace firmato dall’allora governo di Belisario Betancur con le FARC. Dal suo debutto nell'arena politica colombiana fino agli anni duemila, ma soprattutto durante gli anni Ottanta, il partito è stato oggetto di una feroce campagna di stigmatizzazione e di un piano di sterminio che ha prodotto più di seimila vittime. Recentemente la Corte Interamericana ha emesso una sentenza in cui riconosce le responsabilità dello Stato colombiano nella trama di violenza, fisica e simbolica, contro il partito della Unión Patriótica. Il presente saggio intende ricostruire quella vicenda storica, partendo dalla ricostruzione del contesto dentro cui è maturato il piano di sterminio, un contesto di impunità e di terrore politico scatenato contro un «nemico interno» visto come qualcosa da estirpare. This book excavates the rhetorical devices that Nietzsche habitually uses and explains how they constitute a distinctive form of philosophical argumentation. Through a sustained analysis of Nietzsche’s rhetorical style, stratagems, and didactic aims in two of his early works (‘On Truth and Lies in a Non-Moral Sense’ and Daybreak) and two of his later works (Beyond Good and Evil and Twilight of the Idols), the book assesses the extent to which Nietzsche's substantial rhetorical arsenal undermines the philosophical claims he is (...) seeking to advance. The four case studies also bring to the fore some of the less palatable aspects of Nietzsche’s thought such as racial-stereotyping, the essentialising of a so-called slave mentality, and the ranking of human beings based on a highly idiosyncratic and prejudiced view of what qualifies as noble and ignoble.
