ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Artikel erläutert vier Thesen, in denen der Beitrag der theologischen Anthropologie zum interdisziplinären Gespräch über die Sozialnatur des Menschen bestimmt wird. Die Theologie kann zu diesem Gespräch beitragen, indem sie nicht die biologische Unterscheidung von Mensch und Tier in den Vordergrund rückt, sondern die ethische Differenz von Menschlichkeit und Unmenschlichkeit zur Leitdifferenz ihrer Beschreibungsperspektive macht. Sie bringt ihre Sichtweise konstruktiv in das interdisziplinäre Gespräch ein, indem sie eine Phänomenologie und Grammatik des zwischenmenschlichen Verhältnisses entwirft, welche die Differenz von humanem (...) und inhumanem Zusammenleben von Menschen durch das Indexwort ›Gott‹ explizit macht.SUMMARYThe article presents four arguments concerning the contribution of theological anthropology to an interdisciplinary dialogue on the sociality of human nature. It defends the view that theology shall not employ the biological difference of man and animal to describe social humanity. Rather, it can challenge interdisciplinary dialogue with the social sciences by focusing on the ethical non-indifference of social humanity and inhumanity. Thus, theology has to conceptualize a phenomenology of interpersonal relationships which faces the possible neglect of inhumanity and offers a grammar of sociality making the difference of humanity and inhumanity explicit by using the index word ›God‹. Insofar as the purpose of modern law is to secure the freedom of the individual, meaning that modern law is thus a right of freedom, the question arises as to how this right of freedom relates to fear. The article first refers to the narrative of religion as a regime of fear, which is historically related to the narrative of peace through law. After analysing the religious technique of increasing and escalating the irrational and derailing moment of fear, it contrasts (...) the religious regime of fear with the modern regime of fear in the form of law and interprets the latter as an order of immunization against fear, i.e., as a technique of securing domination by ‘taking in the hostile other’ at the price of its division. In this perspective, law appears as a secularized version of the religiously driven escalation of fear; within the framework of a secular order of immanence it seeks to immobilize the relationship to the indeterminate and extraordinary as cultivated by fear in its abysmal nature. Consequently, fear returns to the realm of religion and superstition assigned to it in enlightened modernity. But, disturbingly, in pandemic society it continues to haunt the belief in the reality-assuring power of the normative legal order in the form of the intensifying fear of the ‘enemy in the body’. This article takes up the current debate on populism and democracy and deals with the philosophical critique that the twentieth-century idea of pacifism represents an ideology, the misguided nature of which must be debunked. In this context, the term ideology is referred to with a post-Marxist understanding, which interprets ideology as a collective fantasy structuring our social reality by way of a practice of disguise. Hence, the question will be raised as to whether modern religions, such as neo-Buddhism or Christianity, (...) are well advised to appropriate the idea of pacifism in order to renew their imaginary register of peace and non-violence. In conclusion, it will be argued that the imagination and promise of a peaceful community is among the biblical motives that are the source of Christian faith. However, in order to prevent a political force from turning into an ideology, biblical motives have to be interpreted from the perspective of a negative Christology, which sees pacifism as an impossible project and thus liberates us from the pitfalls of human desire. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel untersucht die in der Sozialtheorie seit der Antike gebrauchte Metapher eines sozialen Bandes im Blick auf die Religion. Mit ihr wird die Performativität sozialer Bindungen und Kohäsionskräfte und damit ihre kulturelle Hervorbringung akzentuiert. Religion kann jedoch nicht einfach mit kulturellen Akten gleichgesetzt werden, wie es oft in liberalprotestantischen Ansätzen und in Konzeptionen einer Öffentlichen Theologie der Fall ist. Alternativ wird daher das Gespräch mit poststrukturalistischen Autoren gesucht, um von ihm her einen Bezug zur offenen Metaphorik des sozialen (...) Bandes und zur These seiner Performanz zu suchen. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel versucht, eine Typologie für die Beschreibung des Verhältnisses von Religion und Kultur in Theologie und Philosophie zu entwickeln. Er problematisiert die These moderner protestantischer Theologen, welche im Anschluss an Friedrich Schleiermacher ‚Religion als Kultur‘ deuten und diese Deutung zu einer differenzlosen Identifikation beider verdichten. Nach einer Klärung der Funktion des Religionsbegriffs in den Theologien von Calvin und Schleiermacher wird die aktuelle Debatte um ein de-kolonialisiertes Kulturverständnis adressiert und von ihr aus die Möglichkeit einer Neufassung des Verhältnisses von (...) Dimensi sosial manusia telah lama menjadi subjek telaah filsafat sebagai wujud kesadaran bahwa manusia adalah zoon politikon (Aristoteles) atau homo sociale (Seneca). Pertanyaan umum yang biasa diajukan adalah, apakah manusia memang mampu bertindak secara altruistik, atau apakah manusia memiliki empati alamiah. Analisis ini tentu saja tidak dimonopoli oleh filsafat saja. Belakangan ini, ilmu-ilmu alam dan sosial seperti ekonomi, sosiobiologi, dan neurosains juga terlibat dalam studi atas dimensi yang dipandang khas pada manusia ini. Dalam ranah yang disebut sebagai “ekonomi eksperimental,”’ misalnya, (...) dipelajari perilaku kerjasama antarindividu yang hasilnya diharapkan dapat menjelaskan dasar perilaku sosial manusia. Dalam buku yang terdiri atas empat bab besar ini dianalisis berbagai pandangan mengenai relasi sosial manusia dalam konteks antropologi interdisipliner. Pengarang memperlihatkan perbedaan pandangan mengenai sosialitas dalam setiap bidang ilmu. Dalam disiplin neuroekonomi, sosialitas dipahami sebagai struktur preferensi perilaku manusia yang berakar pada neurobiologi. Dalam fenomenologi sosial dan etika, istilah ini mengacu pada struktur dasar perbedaan dan relasionalitas dalam relasi antarmanusia. Teologi sendiri melihat sosialitas sebagai struktur relasi manusia dengan Tuhan dan sesama. Pengarang buku ini menunjukkan bahwa konsep mengenai aspek sosial manusia dalam bidang-bidang ini memang tidak sama, dan karena itu, pemahaman mengenai sosialitas manusia perlu dibangun berdasarkan konteks disiplin yang bersangkutan........................... Pembahasan atas topik sosialitas dalam buku ini memang sangat luas dan kaya karena melibatkan banyak pemikir dalam bidang ini seperti Hannah Arendt, Thomas Hobbes, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Axel Honneth, Charles Taylor, Paul Ricoeur, dan Emmanuel Levinas. Dalam pemaparan mengenai relasi antarmanusia dari sudut teologis, pemikiran filsuf-teolog Søren Kierkegaard banyak sekali digunakan. Di satu sisi, kehadiran begitu banyak pemikir dalam buku ini dapat membuat pembaca kewalahan dalam memahami isinya. Di sisi lain, hal ini justru dapat dilihat sebagai salah satu kekayaan buku ini, yang dapat membuka wawasan pembaca dan mengajaknya untuk lebih mendalami pemikiran tokoh tertentu sesuai dengan minatnya. Seluruh studi ini membawa pengarang kepada kesimpulan bahwa hakikat sosialitas manusia tidak- lah dapat dipahami hanya dengan membandingkannya dengan sosialitas hewan, sebagaimana biasanya dilakukan. Pada akhirnya, hakikat ke- manusiaan, termasuk sosialitasnya, akan tersingkap dalam relasi dan interaksi konkret antarmanusia, entah bersifat positif atau negatif. In this paper, the authors explore the question of whether cognitive enhancement via direct neurostimulation, such as through deep brain stimulation, could be reasonably characterized as a form of transformative experience. This question is inspired by a qualitative study being conducted with people at risk of developing dementia and in intimate relationships with people living with dementia (PLWD). They apply L.A. Paul’s work on transformative experience to the question of cognitive enhancement and explore potential limitations on the kind of claims (...) that can legitimately be made about individual well-being and flourishing, as well as limit the kind of empirical work—including the authors’ own—that can hope to enlighten ethical discourse. In this paper, the authors advance the following theses: (1) it is sometimes reasonable to characterize cognitive enhancement as a transformative experience; (2) the testimonies of people intimately acquainted with dementia may still be relevant to evaluating cognitive enhancement even though cognitive enhancement may be a transformative experience; and (3) qualitative studies may still be useful in the ethical analysis of cognitive enhancement, but special attention may need to be given to how these are conducted and what kind of insights can be drawn from them. The relevance of leader ethicality has moti- vated ethical leadership theory. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of moral identity for the concept of ethical leadership. We relate ethical leadership incorporating an internalized moral identity to productive deviant workplace behavior. Using qualitative empirical data we illustrate the relevance of critical situations, i.e., situations in which hypernorms and organizational norms diverge, for the distinction of ethical leaders with or without internalized moral identities. In this book, Rebekka Hufendiek explores emotions as embodied, action-oriented representations, providing a non-cognitivist theory of emotions that accounts for their normative dimensions. _Embodied Emotions_ focuses not only on the bodily reactions involved in emotions, but also on the environment within which emotions are embedded and on the social character of this environment, its ontological constitution, and the way it scaffolds both the development of particular emotion types and the unfolding of individual emotional episodes. In addition, it provides a (...) critical review and appraisal of current empirical studies, mainly in psychophysiology and developmental psychology, which are relevant to discussions about whether emotions are embodied as well as socially embedded. The theory that Hufendiek puts forward denies the distinction between basic and higher cognitive emotions: all emotions are embodied, action-oriented representations. This approach can account for the complex normative structure of emotions, and shares the advantages of cognitivist accounts of emotions without sharing their problems. _Embodied Emotions _makes an original contribution to ongoing debates on the normative aspects of emotions and will be of interest to philosophers working on emotions, embodied cognition and situated cognition, as well as neuroscientists or psychologists who study emotions and are interested in placing their own work within a broader theoretical framework. In his experimental studies on tactile recognition, the German neurologist Kurt Goldstein observes a peculiar ‘twitching movement’ of the body in neurologically impaired patients suffering from mind-blindness. Drawing on Goldstein’s interpretation of these bodily movements as kinaesthetic reactions, the present article advances a symmetrical conception of tactility that relocates the bipolarity of the sense of touch within the human body. In line with this symmetrical approach, the kinaesthetic reactions will be construed as tactile self-activation or self-touch of the body and (...) conceptualized, following Michael Polanyi’s epistemological notion, as the ‘tacit dimension of touch’. Combining neuropathological aspects with a media theoretical and epistemological trajectory, this article aims at re-evaluating the centrality of the registers of the sense of touch as the fundamental ground for grasping the world in its concrete encounters as well as in its symbolic abstractions. When it comes to cheating in higher education, business school students have often been accused of being the worst offenders; if true, this may be a contributing factor in the kinds of fraud that have plagued the business community in recent years. We examined the issue of cheating in the business school by surveying 268 students in business and other professional schools on their attitudes about, and experiences with, cheating. We found that while business school students actually cheated no more (...) or less than students in other professional schools, their attitudes on what constitutes cheating are more lax than those of other professional school students. Additionally, we found that serious cheaters across all professional schools were more likely to be younger and have a lower grade point average. (shrink)

Unrealistic optimism is a bias that leads people to believe, with respect to a specific event or hazard, that they are more likely to experience positive outcomes and/or less likely to experience negative outcomes than similar others. The phenomenon has been seen in a range of health-related contexts—including when prospective participants are presented with the risks and benefits of participating in a clinical trial. In order to test for the prevalence of unrealistic optimism among participants of early-phase oncology trials, we (...) conducted a survey with patients over 18 years of age who were enrolled in a phase I, phase I/II, or phase II clinical cancer trial in the New York City area between August 2008 and October 2009. Participants in our study were asked to compare their own chances of experiencing a range of risks and benefits related to the trial they were enrolled in with the chances of the other trial participants. We found a significant optimistic bias in their responses. Respondents tended to overestimate the benefits of the trial they were enrolled in and underestimate its risks. In addition, we found no significant relationship between respondents’ understanding of the trial’s purpose and how susceptible they were to unrealistic optimism. Our findings suggest that improving the consent process for oncology studies requires more than addressing deficits in understanding. (shrink)

In this article, we describe four theoretical and methodological problems that have impeded implicit attitude research and the popular understanding of its findings. The problems all revolve around assumptions made about the relationships among measures, constructs, cognitive processes, and features of processing. These assumptions have confused our understandings of exactly what we are measuring, the processes that produce implicit evaluations, the meaning of differences in implicit evaluations across people and contexts, the meaning of changes in implicit evaluations in response to (...) intervention, and how implicit evaluations predict behavior. We describe formal modeling as one means to address these problems, and provide illustrative examples. Clarifying these issues has important implications for our understanding of who has particular implicit evaluations and why, when those evaluations are likely to be particularly problematic, how we might best try to change them, and what interventions are best suited to minimize the effects of implicit evaluations on behavior. The Histories of Gregory of Tours are among the most important literary testimonies for the transition period from Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages. The verdict on the Latin literature and language of the first centuries of the Frankish Empire has often been very negative. Krusch and Levison, who published today’s still authoritative critical edition of the Histories, also assumed that Gregory’s original text could only have been written in poor Merovingian Latin. This paper presents arguments for a new (...) edition of the Histories from different perspectives. Gregory’s testimonies in which he addresses his own linguistic and grammatical deficiencies or the necessity of writing in a simple language, have to be viewed and evaluated within the larger tradition of statements of this kind in (Late) Antiquity. They should, thus, not be read as evidence for the argument that Gregory’s Histories were written in poor and incorrect Latin. An assumption of this kind, however, has influenced Krusch’s and Levison’s evaluation of the manuscripts of Gregory’s Histories and is thus reflected in their reconstructed text, even though quite a few manuscripts offer a much better text. This approach has repeatedly been criticised by different scholars; my paper joins this criticism. In assessing the various manuscripts of Gregory’s Histories, the editors have to make a decision regarding the presumed quality and state of Gregory’s Latin. My paper, therefore, also offers a case-study of Gregory’s stylistic and rhythmic arrangement of his text. The analysis of the so-called prose rhythm provides important evidence in favour of a positive assessment of Gregory’s level of education and thus of his linguistic and grammatical proficiency. This can also be viewed as an argument for a new and appropriate edition. (shrink)

Benjamin Libet compared the perceived time of direct brain stimulation to the perceived time of skin stimulation. His results are among the most controversial experiments at the interface between psychology and philosophy. The new element that I bring to this discussion is a reanalysis of Libet's raw data. Libet's original data were difficult to interpret because of the manner in which they were presented in tables. Plotting the data as psychometric functions shows that the observers have great uncertainty about the (...) relative timing of events, as seen the shallow psychometric slopes. A second indication of uncertainty comes from Libet's use of three response categories, A first; B first; and A and B simultaneous. The large number of “perceptually simultaneous” responses provides a further measure of the difficulty of the judgment. There are thus a very broad range of stimulus delays in which the subject is unable to make an accurate ordering response. These points provide evidence that there is no compelling reason to invent exotic or ad hoc mechanisms to account for Libet's data since the uncertainty window is large enough to allow simple mechanism such as memory shifts. Libet argued that his data provide evidence for a backward referral in time. I argue that even though Libet's own data are weak, there are good arguments for a backward referral mechanism to help the subject make sense out of the tangled chaos of asynchronous information associated with experienced events. The normativity of emotions is a widely discussed phenomenon. So far embodied accounts have not paid sufficient attention to the various aspects of the normativity of emotions. In this paper it shall be pointed out that embodied accounts are constrained in the way they can account for the normativity of emotions due to their commitments to naturalism, externalism, and anti-vehicle-internalism. One way to account for the normativity of emotions within a naturalist framework is to describe the intentional objects of emotions (...) as affordances that are of value for the organism. These affordances are part of a biological and social environment we are situated in, and they stand in complex relations to each other and to skillful organisms. I suggest that describing these relations can replace vehicle-internalist approaches but still account for the normativity of emotions within a naturalist framework. (shrink)

The Meno, one of the most widely read of the Platonic dialogues, is seen afresh in this original interpretation that explores the dialogue as a theatrical presentation. This article sets out to critically examine the accounts of well-being produced by a middle-aged Swiss woman living in precarious prosperity. By taking on a feminist reading of the narrative on well-being, the article challenges the taken for granted assumption of the powerful agent in thriving societies. Insights from literature on happiness in nations and gender beliefs enabled addressing the woman’s capability to exert agency, while acknowledging the influence of the context in which narratives are embedded. In addition, the presence (...) of a non-national interviewer appears to be an incentive for the interviewee’s compliance with cultural meta-narratives. The approach of well-being as ‘agential flourishing’ proved helpful in assessing the woman’s capability on a gendered career path in atypical employment to deal with precariousness. (shrink)
