Renford Bambrough has written a provocative little book that attempts to defend "objectivity" in morals from attacks by critics whom he variously lables as "sceptics," subjectivists," and "relativists." He maintains that these philosophers have presented a misrepresentation--a caricature--of the nature of morality. They have been right in emphasizing a central role for feelings and emotions in morals, but wrong in concluding that this robs morality of objectivity.

Hare and Vlastos write on Plato, Anscombe, Ackrill, MacKinnon, Owen, and Bambrough on Aristotle, while Ryle gives some of the history of "Dialectic in the Academy." All of the essays were written especially for this volume, and most show a disappointing lack of polish. Vlastos' "Degrees of Reality in Plato" is an exception, and his thesis is an interesting reworking of a familiar criticism. Bambrough has the best offering on Aristotle: an approving assessment of Aristotle's doctrine and method (...) of employment of equivocal terms, an employment which Bambrough praises as "A Paradigm of Philosophy," and compares favorably with the Wittgensteinian doctrine of family resemblances.—E. In his speech of welcome to the members of the Classical Joint Meeting at Cambridge in August, 1958, the Master of Peterhouse praised classical scholars for the detachment and pertinacity with which they continue their pursuits while the world is on the edge of the abyss.
