In an effort to meet growing stakeholder demands for transparency, accountability, and responsibility, many large organizations globally have voluntarily adopted the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines. Moreover, triggered by recent management transgressions, the ancient virtue of practical wisdom has gained increased attention from management scholars, who argue that the Aristotelian concept, with its interdisciplinary nature, has the capacity of turning management back into a holistic, contextual, and virtue-orientated practice. Especially the fact that practical wisdom is firmly based on normative values, coupled (...) with the emphasis on experience and practice, makes it well suited as a leitmotif for sustainable and responsible management. This conceptual paper builds on the link between practical wisdom and sustainability. I argue that the GRI may be regarded as an example of procedural practical wisdom in the context of sustainability reporting, specifically in terms of its emphasis on the holistic and situational dimensions, articulated through the concepts of materiality analysis and stakeholder dialogue. Practical implications, limitations, and avenues for further research are discussed. (shrink)

Previous research has underlined the significance of practical wisdom pertaining to corporate sustainability. Recent studies, however, have identified managing opposing but interlocked tensions related to environmental, social, and economic aspects as one of the most crucial future challenges in CS. Therefore, we apply the established link between wisdom and sustainability to the pressing topic of managing tensions in CS. We commence with a literature overview of tensions in sustainability management, which manifests our basic work assumption concerning the need for practical (...) wisdom in CS. We then discuss the threefold, mutual interconnectedness between practical wisdom and tension management in CS, which we illustrate in a conceptual model. Thereafter, we develop a set of propositions on how a practical wisdom approach influences CS in practice and how it differs from a business-case approach. In recognition of the conceptual character of our paper, we conclude by outlining potential practical applications and theoretical implications of the model and of the propositions. Die Archäologien gelten als junge Wissenschaften, da sie erst vom 19. Jahrhundert an zu universitären Fächern wurden. Die Ur- und Frühgeschichte beruft sich auf die Skandinavier Thomsen und Montelius, die Klassische Archäologie auf Winckelmann. Ältere, als antiquarisch und vorwissenschaftlich bezeichnete Arbeiten schließt man aus der Fachtradition aus. Eine vergleichende europäische Wissenschaftsgeschichte archäologischen Forschens vor dem 19. Jahrhundert ist deshalb ein Desiderat. Die Autorin füllt diese Lücke, indem sie in ihrem zweibändigen Werk Arbeiten mit archäologischem Inhalt aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern auf (...) ihre grundlegenden Konzepte, Fragestellungen und Methoden hin untersucht. In Studien zu einzelnen Arbeitsschritten geht sie u. a. der Frage nach, inwieweit und unter welchen sozialen und politischen Bedingungen vor der akademischen Fachbildung methodische und konzeptuelle Arbeitsnormen entstanden und sich durchsetzen konnten. Sie kann zeigen, dass archäologische Quellen seit der Antike als wissenschaftliche Beweise dienten, Untersuchungsmethoden zielgerichtet entwickelt wurden und heutige fachliche und nationale Ausprägungen tiefe historische Wurzeln haben. Der zweite Band ist der Zeit von 1630 bis 1852 gewidmet. Sasse erfasst damit die Anfänge der Institutionalisierung, die von der Entwicklung der Grabungsmethodik sowie der Erfindung des heute noch grundlegenden Dreiperiodensystems geprägt sind. Skandinavien, das deutsche Sprachgebiet, England und Frankreich stehen im Fokus. Deutlich wird, dass einige Ergebnisse seit 1660 wesentlich zur europäischen Säkularisierung beitrugen. Erst die Methoden zur Beobachtung und Bearbeitung von Fundkomplexen und die Definition kultureller Kontexte seit 1750 jedoch schufen die Voraussetzung zur Formulierung tragfähiger Fachparadigmen. This article explores Adorno’s negative dialectics as a critical social theory of economic objectivity. It rejects the conventional view that Adorno does not offer a critique of the economic forms of capitalist society. The article holds that negative dialectics is a dialectics of the social world in the form of the economic object, one that is governed by the movement of economic quantities, that is, real economic abstractions. Negative dialectics refuses to accept the constituted economic categories as categories of economic (...) nature. Instead, the article argues, it amounts to a conceptualized social praxis [ begriffene Praxis] of the capitalistically constituted social relations, which manifest themselves in the form of seemingly independent economic categories. Economic nature is a socially constituted nature, which entails the class antagonism in its concept. The article concludes that for negative dialectics the explanation of real economic abstractions lies in the understanding of the class-divided nature of human practice. (shrink)

This lecture by Professor Werner Marx, of Freiburg University, was presented at the Moscow Hegel Convention on November 2, 1974. It is here translated for the first time by Professor James C. Risser, of Seattle University.

Against the background of the contemporary debate about financialisation, the paper conceptualises the capitalist labour economy as fundamentally a monetary system. It argues that money is not a capitalist means of organising its labour economy but that it is rather a capitalist end. The argument examines and finds wanting conceptions of money in political economy, including Keynesianism and neoliberalism, and argues that the debate about financialisation is fundamentally based on the propositions of political economy. It holds that Marx’s critique of (...) political economy conceives of money as the form of value and expounds money-making as the purpose of the capital labour economy. Thus, the labour theory of value is fundamentally a monetary theory of value, labour is the means of valorisation, and that is, of money in process, and as such capital. Making money out of money is capital as its most rational. In the form of credit, money posits wealth as a claim on future surplus value. (shrink)

This article has two purposes. First, it aims to present a detailed analysis of the argument of “recognition” or even of the “fight for recognition”, which Hegel uses in his fragments from Jena treating of the system of philosophy, especially of the philosophy of spirit. It will be necessary to determine precedently by means of an exact interpretation the content of that expressions, in order to criticize and to compare, his original significance in Hegel with the theoretical application made by (...) Honneth. The special aim hereby is to correct and to explain the function of the “fight for recognition”, even in its sharpening significance as a “fight for life and death”, with relation to the genesis of the state of right. Second, the figure of “recognition” is related to Hegel’s Philosophy of right in the version of 1820. In this work, recognition participates in the theory of “institutions” which is analyzed by Honneth as well. Apart from the merits gained through the endeavour to introduce a classic philosophical theory into a conception of justice in society, we feel obliged to state an error in Honneth‘s interpretation in so far as he understands an institution as a simple social community of communication. For that reason, a conclusion based on a critical commentary can only include a negative recommendation, that means, not to follow those traces of interpretation but rather to defend and to consult the texts originally composed by Hegel.
