  1. Controlled and automatic human information processing: Perceptual learning, automatic attending, and a general theory.Richard M. Shiffrin & Walter Schneider - 1977 - Psychological Review 84 (2):128-90.
Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors in a series of experiments. The studies demonstrate the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search; trace the course of the learning of automatic detection, of categories, and of automatic-attention responses; and show the dependence of automatic detection on attending responses and demonstrate how such responses interrupt controlled processing and interfere with the focusing of attention. The learning of categories is (...)

The Semantic Foundations of Logic Volume 1: Propositional Logics.Richard L. Epstein & Walter Alexandre Carnielli - 1990 - Dordrecht, Boston, and London: Kluwer Academic Publishers.
This book grew out of my confusion. If logic is objective how can there be so many logics? Is there one right logic, or many right ones? Is there some underlying unity that connects them? What is the significance of the mathematical theorems about logic which I've learned if they have no connection to our everyday reasoning? The answers I propose revolve around the perception that what one pays attention to in reasoning determines which logic is appropriate. The act of (...)

    Locke and the Intuitionist Theory of Number.Richard Aaron & Philip Walters - 1965 - Philosophy 40 (153):197 - 206.
The Purpose of this paper is to ask how far Locke can be said to have anticipated modern theories of number, particularly the intuitionist theory of Brouwer and Heyting. It has in mind Mr Edward E. Dawson's statement that Locke's account of number was not merely ‘a good effort in his own day’ but that ‘what Locke had to say really was quite fundamental, and a good deal of modern mathematics assumes his position, either explicitly or implicitly’. Mr Dawson thinks (...)

Ecological depth perception: Ducklings tested together and alone.Richard D. Walk & Kathy Walters - 1984 - Bulletin of the Psychonomic Society 22 (4):368-371.
Ducklings were placed either singly or in pairs on a platform at two different heights. Both height and pairing influenced performance: More ducklings descended from the platform at low heights, and more single ducklings descended than paired ducklings. The social factor, pairing, made behavior more cautious and decreased the number of distress calls. A similar trend for pairing to influence performance was shown on the visual cliff. Without its peers, the duckling is a distressed animal. Previous careless behavior by ducklings (...)

The distinction between long-term knowledge and short-term control processes is valid and useful.Richard M. Shiffrin, Walter Schneider & Gordon D. Logan - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e140.
The binary distinction De Neys questions has been put forward many times since the beginnings of psychology, in slightly different forms and under different names. It has proved enormously useful and has received detailed empirical support and careful modeling. At heart the distinction is that between knowledge in long-term memory and control processes in short-term memory.

Academic Freedom and Tenure: Ethical Issues.Richard DeGeorge, Walter E. Block, Ralph F. Fuchs, Robert W. McGee, Richard Rorty & John R. Searle - 1997 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
Academic freedom and tenure, both cherished institutions of higher education, are currently under attack by many both outside and within the academy. Richard DeGeorge argues that they can be defended on ethical grounds only if they are joined with appropriate accountability, publicly articulated and defended standards, and conscientious enforcement of these standards by academic institutions and the members of the academic community.

Impact of Cognitive Load on Family Decision Makers’ Recall and Understanding of Donation Requests for the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project.Gary Walters, Richard D. Hasz, Howard M. Nathan, Heather M. Traino, Jennifer Trgina, Laura Barker, Maghboeba Mosavel, Maureen Wilson-Genderson & Laura A. Siminoff - 2018 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 29 (1):20-30.
Genomic research projects that collect tissues from deceased organ and tissue donors must obtain the authorization of family decision makers under difficult circumstances that may affect the authorization process. Using a quasi-experimental design, the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) substudy of the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project compared the recall and understanding of the donation authorization process of two groups: family members who had authorized donation of tissues to the GTEx project (the comparison group) and family members who had authorized (...)

Moral judgment and values in a developed and a developing nation: A comparative analysis. [REVIEW]Richard Priem, Dan Worrell, Bruce Walters & Terry Coalter - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (5):37-47.
This comparative field study evaluated the moral reasoning used by U.S. and Belizean business students in resolving business-related moral dilemmas. The Belizeans, citizens of a less-developed country with Western heritage and a values-based education system, revolved the dilemmas using higher stages of moral judgment than did the U.S. business students.

Michael Polanyi criticized the neo‐Darwinian synthesis on two grounds: that accidental hereditary changes bringing adaptive advantages cannot account for the rise of discontinuous new species, and that a Ideological ordering principle is needed to explain evolutionary advance. I commend the previous articles by John Apczynski and Richard Gelwick and also argue, more strongly than they, that Polanyi's critique of evolutionary theory is flawed. It relies on an inappropriate notion of progress and untenable analogies from the human process of scientific discovery (...)

Walter Benjamin: An Aesthetic of Redemption.Richard Wolin - 1994 - University of California Press.
Few twentieth-century thinkers have proven as influential as Walter Benjamin, the German-Jewish philosopher and cultural and literary critic. Richard Wolin's book remains among the clearest and most insightful introductions to Benjamin's writings, offering a philosophically rich exposition of his complex relationship to Adorno, Brecht, Jewish Messianism, and Western Marxism. Wolin provides nuanced interpretations of Benjamin's widely studied writings on Baudelaire, historiography, and art in the age of mechanical reproduction. In a new Introduction written especially for this edition, Wolin discusses (...)
