Raspadom SFR Jugoslavije i stvaranjem novih nacionalnih drzava, jedinstvena Islamska zajednica u SFR Jugoslaviji transformisala se u nekoliko samostalnih islamskih zajednica. Autor se u ovom tekstu bavi samo promenama organizacionih struktura islamskih zajednica i pruza osnovu za dalja analiziranja i istrazivanja tih promena, svestan da su institucionalne promene deo sireg procesa transformacije balkanskih drustava, odnosno etnicke homogenizacije, revitalizacije religije, politizacije religije, religizacije politike, demografskih kretanja itd. This paper emphasizes the place and the role of the aesthetic quality and the role of the erotic in Levinas?s project that deals with ethical an-archaeology. Despite Levinas?s categorical statements that there are irreconcilable differences between ethics and aesthetics, i.e. between ethics and the erotic, above all, it is emphasized here that these differences do not represent a stark or sharp contrast, but quite contrary, they often constitute a subversive ontological element. On the other hand, somewhat unexpectedly, with its ethical (...) anti-aestheticism Levinas?s?noncontemporary? thought appears to be, at the same time, both significant and critical, elementary, emancipatory and contemporary in relation to present-day reactionary reactualization and revitalization of the aesthetic quality which mechanically proceeds to develop on the margins of Levinas?s emancipatory past. nema. It is usually believed that science goes with things like theoria, ‘knowing that’, ontology and representing, and that techne, know-how, technology and intervening are only instrumental to science or its beneficial but nonetheless accidental side effect. In this context to be instrumental means also to be eliminable, or at least transparent, something that leaves no trace. Following the historical development of experimentation, from simple observation to modern microscopic experiments. I try to show how that view loses its ground. To produce (...) an artefact, scientific or other, is to be engaged in a complex dynamics, both ontological and epistemological in which at least two component processes, that of bringing forth and that of bringing into, are intertwined. The old dictum: ‘Science discovers, technology invents’, should be replaced by: science discovers because it invents. As a consequence scientific theory becomes an instrument of design. (shrink)

The article examines how recovering drug addicts employ testimonies of conversion and addiction to develop and sustain personal identity and create meaning from varied experiences in life. Drawing on 31 autobiographies of recovering drug addicts we analyze conversion and addiction testimonies in two European contexts. The analysis shows how existing frames of reference and self-understanding are undermined and/or developed. We first describe the substance abuse in participants’ addiction trajectory. Next, we outline the religious aspects and the primary conception of recovering (...) addicts’ conversions as an example of spiritual transformation and narrative change. Moreover, participants select and creatively adapt cultural practices in their testimonies. In many of these examples converts clearly employ elements from their personal and family histories, their ethnic and religious heritages, and their larger cultural and historical context to create a meaningful conversion narrative. Polazeci od jedne Fukoove opaske o vaznosti Kantovog razumevanja prosvetiteljstva za modernu filozofiju uopste, u ovom tekstu pokusavamo da sledimo trag veze izmedju pitanja o aktuelnosti, prosvetiteljstva i moderne kod Kanta. Ideje slobode i subjektivnosti uocavamo kao nezaobilazne za razumevanje kantovskog prosvetiteljskog projekta i njegove aktuelnosti. U tekstu pokusavamo da pokazemo kako se kod Kanta nailazi na specificno moderno shvatanje aktuelnosti koje ima dalekosezne ontoloske posledice, narocito u pogledu kategorije mogucnosti. Some contemporary theorists such as Mazzocchi, Theise and Kafatos are convinced that the reformed complementarity may redefine how we might exploit the complexity theory in 21st-century life sciences research. However, the motives behind the profound re-invention of “biological complementarity” need to be substantiated with concrete shreds of evidence about this principle’s applicability in real-life science experimentation, which we found missing in the literature. This paper discusses such pieces of evidence by confronting Bohr’s complementarity and ion channel modeling practice. We examine (...) whether and to what extent this principle might assist in developing ion channel models incorporating both deterministic and stochastic solutions. According to the “mutual exclusiveness of experimental setups” version of Bohr’s complementarity, this principle is needed when two mutually exclusive perspectives or approaches are right, necessary in a particular context, and are not contradictory as they arise in mutually exclusive conditions (mutually exclusive experimental or modeling setups). A detailed examination of the modeling practice reveals that both solutions are often used simultaneously in a single ion channel model, suggesting that the opposite conceptual frameworks can coexist in the same modeling setup. We concluded that Bohr’s complementarity might find applications in these complex modeling setups but only through its realistic phenomenological interpretation that allows applying different modes of description regardless of the nature of the underlying ion channel opening process. Also, we propose the combined use of complementarity and Complex thinking in building the multifaceted ion channel models. Overall, this paper’s results support the efforts to establish a more general form of complementarity to meet today’s complexity theory-inspired life sciences modeling demands. (shrink)

The article analyses how robotisation as the latest advance in military technology can depersonalise the methods of killing in the 21st century by turning enemy soldiers and civilians into mere objects devoid of moral value. The departing assumption is that robotisation of warfare transforms military operations into automated industrial processes with the aim of removing empathy as a redundant?cost?. The development of autonomous weapons systems raises a number of sharp ethical controversies related to the projected moral insensitivity of robots regarding (...) the treatment of enemies and civilian population. The futurist vision of war as a foreign policy instrument entirely?purified? of the risk of morally wrong actions is in opposition with the negative effects of the use of drones. The author concludes that the use of lethal robots in combat would eventually remove enemy soldiers and civilians from the realm of ethical reasoning and deprive them of human dignity. Decision to kill in military operations ought to be based on human conscience as the only proper framework of making decisions by reasoning whether an action is right or wrong. (shrink)

Posebno se naznacuje jedan ontoloski bitan aspekt Rusoove radikalnosti, u kojem je raskidanje veza s prirodom, takozvani izlazak iz prirodnog stanja i sklapanje drustvenog ugovora, neodvojivo od njegovog razumevanja slobode, jednakosti i politicke delatnosti. Pokazuje se kako totalna alijenacija dovodi do radikalnog raskida s prirodom, a nenuzno iskrsavanje opste volje i uspostavljanje slobode kao samozakonodavstva tumaci se (...) kao dogadjaj politike, ciji uslov i zakon jeste opsta jednakost. This paper tries to critically analyse Jeffrey Alexander?s cultural sociology. In the first part of the paper I will examine Alexander?s conception of hermeneutical structuralism which argues that conventional systemic sociology and richness of experience found in everyday praxis can be reconciled. In the next section I will provide a critique of this kind of approach to social theory and maintain that Alexander?s sociology is, in principle, reductionist regarding everyday life. In addition, I will also point out some of the (...) comparative advantages that pragmatically oriented theory has in the attempt of integrating theoretical and practical knowledge. In the final section of the paper, I will try to illustrate some of the major shortcomings of Alexander?s sociology on the concrete example of advances in computer technology. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to show certain aspects of Rorty?s philosophy that are relevant to social theory, and also to point out the most important divergences of Rorty?s insights from postmodern understanding of social reality. Therefore, in the first part of the paper I will examine both Rorty?s philosophy of edification and all relevant criticisms to his view of philosophy?as a communication of mankind?. Furthermore, I will try to establish to which extent Rorty?s understanding of contingency and its (...) implications really falls close to postmodern thought. I will also argue that the impossibility of philosophical justification of social reality, according to Rorty, does not entail impossibility of moral progress and that the role of social theory is actually in raising the level of inclusion of social interaction and in providing social hope. Moreover, it will be shown that Rorty, unlike Foucault and Derrida, thought that the institutions of Western democracy and liberalism are quite capable to achieve these goals and that accomplishment of this liberal utopia greatly depends on the degree of commitment to moral progress that all actors within the cultural field share. Namera ovog rada je da prikaze odredjene aspekte Rortijeve filozofije koji imaju drustvenoteorijski znacaj kao i da naznaci najznacajnije tacke u kojima se ovi njegovi uvidi razmimoilaze sa odredjenim postmodernistickim razumevanjem drustvene stvarnosti. Stoga ce se u prvom delu rada narocita paznja biti posvecena Rortijevoj filozofiji edifikacije, ali i relevantnim kritikama koje su tokom godina bile upucene njegovom shvatanju filozofije kao svojevrsne filozofski neutemeljene?komunikacije covecanstva?. Nakon toga, pokusacemo da utvrdimo u kojoj meri je Rortijevo shvatanje kontigencije i njenih posledica blisko postmodernoj misli. Argumentovacemo da nemogucnost filozofskog opravdanja drustvene stvarnosti po Rortiju ne nalaze i nemogucnost moralnog progresa, te da je osnovna uloga svake drustvene teorije zapravo povecavanje inkluzivnosti drustvene interakcije i pruzanje drustvene nade. Stavise, Rorti je za razliku od Fukoa i Deride smatrao da su institucije zapadne demokratije i liberalizma potpuno dovoljne za postizanje ovih ciljeva, te da stoga dosezanje ove liberalne utopije u velikoj meri zavisi od toga koliko su delatnici unutar kulturne sfere spremni na aktivno zalaganje u cilju dostizanja ovog moralnog progresa. Continuous poleward motion of microtubules in metazoan mitotic spindles has been fascinating generations of cell biologists over the last several decades. In human cells, this so‐called poleward flux was recently shown to be driven by the coordinated action of four mitotic kinesins. The sliding activities of kinesin‐5/EG5 and kinesin‐12/KIF15 are sequentially supported by kinesin‐7/CENP‐E at kinetochores and kinesin‐4/KIF4A on chromosome arms, with the individual contributions peaking during prometaphase and metaphase, respectively. Although recent data elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying this cellular (...) phenomenon, the functional roles of microtubule poleward flux during cell division remain largely elusive. The paper outlines the historical development of question about ambiguous and mysterious human nature, in particular considering the reasons and conditions for the founding of modern philosophical anthropology. Subsequently, it brings an overview of the conceptual beginnings and directions of anthropological research in Croatia. The focus is on the following questions: When did the investigations begin in the field of philosophical anthropology, in what kind of thinking environments were they shaped and what scientific achievements were reached? The presentation brings to (...) light the cognition that philosophical anthropology in Croatia got its first contours and valuable contributions to the very beginning of the contemporary renewal of this discipline, shortly after its phenomenological and scientific revivals in the ventures of Scheler and Plessner. The development of this research branch is, according to Hans Lankʼs model, divided into four main conceptual orientations. The anthropology from above shows the creative contributions of Stjepan Zimmermann, Vilim Keilbach, Rajmund Kupareo, Miljenko Belić, Ante Kusić, Josip Ćurić, Hrvoje Lasić and Ivan Koprek. The anthropology from below is illustrated by the reference to the research by Vera Ehrlich-Stein, Rudi Supek, the Institute of Anthropology, Pavao Rudan and Darko Polšek. For the anthropology from culture, the philosophical achievements of Pavao Vuk-Pavlović, Vladimir Filipović, Vjekoslav Mikecin, Esad Ćimić, Nikola Skledar, Branka Brujić, Milan Galović and Mihaela Girardi-Karšulin were delineated. Under the anthropology from history, the works of Predrag Vranicki, Milan Kangrga, Vanja Sutlić, Gaja Petrović, Hotimir Burger, Mislava Kukoč and Raul Raunić are outlined. The conclusion summarises four insights. 1. Philosophical anthropology is an under-researched and not enough appreciated field, which represents one of the most fertile currents of thought in the 20th century. 2. Creative contributions are presented in all four major orientations. 3. In the context of anthropological research, lively dialogue and a fruitful meeting of different worldviews were realised. 4. The beginnings of the development of the discipline should be moved earlier in history than previously considered, from the 1950s and 1960s to the early 1930s. The last insight points to the need for further exploration of the perceived, and so far largely neglected, continuity of anthropological themes and related ideas in the history of recent philosophy in Croatia. This paper presents three interconnected examinations of Asger S?rensen?s arguments in Capitalism, Alienation and Critique, which thematize S?rensen?s overarching understanding of the relationship between theory and practice: his general methodological perspective on critical theory, its distinctive epistemology and its anchoring in the empirical world. The paper authors each try to push S?rensen on these crucial points by considering how S?rensen?s variant of critical theory actually operates, scrutinizing in more detail the particular relationship between the?experience of injustice?, which for S?rensen constitutes (...) the empirical foothold for critical theory, and the theoretical diagnosis of social reality which the critical theorist should formulate against the backdrop of this experience. In this paper we describe an argumentation-based representation of normal form games, and demonstrate how argumentation can be used to compute pure strategy Nash equilibria. Our approach builds on Modgil’s Extended Argumentation Frameworks. We demonstrate its correctness, showprove several theoretical properties it satisfies, and outline how it can be used to explain why certain strategies are Nash equilibria to a non-expert human user.

The topic of this article is the relation between the modern process of globalization and democracy. The agenda starts with the concept of globalization, its different meanings and various layers, traps and paradoxes, consequences and effects, advantages and disadvantages in the horizon of contemporary life. Following a brief introduction into the theme, the article outlines a short historic philosophical review into the development of globalization from theancient times to the contemporary world. The focus of the philosophical view is that of (...) two significant authorities and opposite approaches in the process of developing ‘World Society’ – Immanuel Kant and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Kant explained the means to the status of ‘World Civility’ as a ‘Natural Purpose’. Hegel exposed the necessity of the development of world history to the state of global freedom. The question: Does the process of making global society threaten democracy in the modern world - is the key issue nowadays. All agree that the globalization process diminishes the area of the authentic political acting. Democracy originates from the ‘polis’ or small town republic and is a symbol of the government in the small political community. The step from the polis democracy to the national state democracy was the result of change from the direct to the representative democracy. The transition from the national to the supranational and global politics requires new essential transformation of the being of democracy. (shrink)

U članku je riječ o bitnim obilježjima i modelu demokratskoga odgoja u Deweyevu djelu. Polazno je pitanje: što za suvremenu deliberativnu demokraciju znači Deweyev koncept odgoja i obrazovanja. Može li se njegov etički ideal čovječnosti primijeniti kao filozofski temelj za vrednovanje i opravdanje demokratske prakse? Je li Dewey potkopao i razorio temelje liberalizma, kako je tvrdio Richard Rorty? Ili njegova obnova filozofije zapravo tek vraća u život liberalizam i otvara nove putove demokraciji? Najnoviji val recepcije Deweyeve filozofije sve dubljim intenzitetom (...) pokazuje zacijelo da iz njezina misaonoga naslijeđa plodonosnim sudarima s idejama i tendencijama suvremenoga doba izlazi na vidjelo nešto što ujedno prekoračuje okvir suvremenosti i upućuje na budućnost. U aktualnoj renesansi pragmatizma posebice je znakovito primijetiti kako Deweyeva vrhunski profinjena kritika modernoga »individualizma« i zagovor jačanja ćudorednih i participativno demokratskih poveznica u lokalnim zajednicama pronalazi odjeka u komunitarističkim argumentacijskim diskursima. Zaključna je teza da Dewey isticanjem supstancijalne povezanosti »communicatio–community–common« ne ruši temelje liberalizma i demokracije nego ih štoviše obogaćuje, učvršćuje i podiže na višu razinu. Im Aufsatz geht es um wesentliche Merkmale und Modell der demokratischen Erziehung bei Dewey. Die Ausgangsfrage lautet: ob und was Deweys Bildungskonzept für die zeitgenössische deliberative Demokratie zu bedeuten hat. Kann sein ethisches Ideal der Menschheit als philosophisches Fundament zur Rechtfertigung der demokratischen Praxis angewendet werden? Hat Dewey die philosophischen Grundlagen des Liberalismus untergraben und abgeschafft, wie es Richard Rorty behauptet? Oder bringt seine Erneuerung der Philosophie zugleich die Wiederbelebung des Liberalismus und eröffnet neue Wege für Demokratie? Die neueste Rezeptionswelle (...) der deweyschen Philosophie mit einer sich stetig vertiefenden Intensität zeigt wohl, dass aus ihrem Gedankengut durch die fruchtbaren Zusammenstöße mit den Ideen und Tendenzen des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters etwas zutage tritt, was zugleich den Rahmen der Gegenwart überschreitet und auf die Zukunft hinweist. In der aktuellen Renaissance des Pragmatismus ist besonders merkwürdig, wie Deweys höchst ausdifferenzierte Kritik am modernen „Individualismus“ und Befürwortung der Stärkung der sittlichen und partizipativ-demokratischen Bindungen in den lokalen Gemeinschaften ein Echo in den kommunitaristischen Argumentationsdiskursen gefunden hat. Die Schlussthese besagt, dass Dewey mit der Hervorhebung des substanziellen Zusammenhangs der Kommunikation , der Gemeinschaft und des Gemeinsamen die Grundlagen des Liberalismus und der Demokratie keineswegs untergraben, sondern sie bereichert, gefestigt und auf eine höhere Ebene gehoben hat. The article elaborates on the essential characteristics and model of democratic education in Dewey’s works. It starts with the question: what is the meaning of Dewey’s concept of education regarding the contemporary deliberative democracy? Can his ethical ideal of humanity be applied as a philosophical basis for the evaluation and justification of democratic practices? Did Dewey undermine and destroy the foundations of liberalism, as suggested by Richard Rorty? Or does his reconstruction of philosophy actually bring liberalism back to life and (...) opens new paths to democracy? The latest wave of reception of Dewey’s philosophy expresses with increasing intensity that something, which at the same time exceeds the framework of modernity and points to the future, emerges from his legacy of thought through fruitful collisions with the ideas and tendencies of the modern age. In the current renaissance of pragmatism, it is especially significant to note that Dewey’s highly sophisticated critique of the modern “individualism”, together with his advocacy of strengthening the moral and participative democracy links in local communities, finds its way in communitarian argumentation discourses. The concluding thesis states that Dewey does not destroy the foundations of liberalism and democracy by emphasizing the substantial connection “communicatio–community–common”, but rather enriches, strengthens, and brings them to a higher level. Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist der Bezug zwischen dem modernen Globalisierungsprozess und der Demokratie. Untersucht werden zunächst das Konzept der Demokratie, seine unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen und verschiedenen Bedeutungsschichten, seine Tücken und Paradoxe, Konsequenzen und Ergebnisse sowie Vor- und Nachteile im zeitgenössischen Lebenshorizont. Auf den Einleitungsteil, der den Leser mit dem Thema bekannt macht, folgt eine kurze geschichtsphilosophische Darstellung zur Entwicklung der Globalisierung von der Antike bis auf unsere Tage. Im Brennpunkt der philosophischen Untersuchung stehen die Positionen zweier maßgeblichen Autoritäten und ihre (...) gegensätzlichen Ansätze bei der Entwicklung einer ,Weltgesellschaft’ – gemeint sind Immanuel Kant und Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Kant erklärte die Mittel zur Schaffung eines ,Weltbürgertums’ als ,natürliche Zwecke’. Hegel legte die Entwicklung der Weltgeschichte zum Zustand globaler Freiheit als eine Notwendigkeit dar. Wird die Demokratie in der modernen Welt durch die Entstehung einer globalen Gesellschaft gefährdet? – so lautet die Schlüsselfrage heute. Alle Autoren, die sich mit dieser Frage beschäftigen, sind sich darin einig, dass durch den Globalisierungsprozess der Bereich authentischen politischen Handelns geschwächt wird. Die Demokratie hat ihren Ursprung in der Polis bzw. dem kleinen Stadtstaat und ist Symbol für die Herrschaftsform in einem kleinen politischen Gemeinwesen. Die Entwicklung von der Demokratie der Polis zur Demokratie des Nationalstaats war das Ergebnis des Wandels von der direkten zur repräsentativen Demokratie. Der Übergang von der Ebene der nationalen auf die Ebene der supranationalen und globalen Politik erfordert eine neue, grundlegende Transformation des Wesens der Demokratie. (shrink)

Le sujet de cet article est le rapport entre le processus actuel de mondialisation et la démocratie. Le plan de travail démarre par le concept de démocratie, ses différents niveaux et significations, ses pièges et ses paradoxes, ses effets et ses conséquences, ses avantages et ses inconvénients dans l’horizon de la vie contemporaine. Après l’introduction, l’article trace un aperçu historico- philosophique de l’évolution de la mondialisation des temps anciens jusqu’au monde contemporain. Le point de vue philosophique central est celui d’Immanuel (...) Kant et de Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel – deux autorités et deux approches du processus de développement d’une « société mondiale » opposées. Kant a expliqué les moyens du statut de « citoyenneté mondiale » comme une « finalité naturelle ». Hegel a exposé la nécessité de l’évolution de l’histoire mondiale jusqu’à l’état d’une liberté globale. La question de savoir si le processus de création d’une société mondiale met en danger la démocratie dans le monde contemporain est aujourd’hui une question clé. Tout le monde s’accorde pour dire que le processus de mondialisation affaiblit le champ de l’action politique authentique. La démocratie tire son origine de « polis », la petite Cité-Etat, et symbolise la gouvernance dans une petite communauté politique. Le pas entre la démocratie du polis vers la démocratie de l’Etat nation a été le résultat de la mutation de la démocratie directe vers la démocratie représentative. Le passage d’une politique nationale à une politique supranationale et mondiale nécessite une nouvelle transformation importante de la nature de la démocratie. (shrink)

Dewey a-t-il sapé les fondements du libéralisme, comme l’affirmait Richard Rorty ? Ou son renouveau de la philosophie fait-elle revenir en (...) réalité le libéralisme à la vie et n’ouvre-t-elle pas de nouvelles voies pour la démocratie ? La dernière vague de la réception de la philosophie de Dewey montre certainement de plus en plus profondément que l’héritage de sa pensée, grâce aux confrontations fructueuses avec des idées et tendances contemporaines, fait ressortir quelque chose qui dépasse le cadre de la contemporanéité et qui implique l’avenir. Dans l’actuelle renaissance du pragmatisme, il est intéressant de noter que la critique profondément subtile que Dewey fait de l’ « individualisme » moderne, ainsi que sa défense du renforcement des liens moraux et démocratiques participatifs dans les communautés locales, trouve l’écho dans les arguments communautaristes. Pour conclure, en soulignant le rapport substantiel entre la communication , la communauté et le commun , Dewey ne mine pas les fondements du libéralisme et de la démocratie, mais au contraire les enrichit, les renforce et les élève à un niveau supérieur. Slijedeći Fichteovu misao da »svatko izabire onakvu filozofiju kakav je tko čovjek«, u članku se ocrtavaju misaoni sklopovi stvaralačkoga opusa Ante Pažanina, u nastojanju da se na taj način osvijetle stožerne sastavnice njegove životne filozofije. Pažaninova istraživanja o filozofiji kao strogoj znanosti, fenomenologiji, praktičnoj filozofiji, etici i politici imaju znatan odjek i utjecaj ne samo u Hrvatskoj nego su zapažena i u svijetu. Na međunarodnoj pozornici privukla je zanimanje njegova osebujna koncepcija normativne političke filozofije u kojoj kritički rasvjetljuje i ukazuje (...) na posljetke suvremene znanstveno-tehničke civilizacije. Nasuprot novovjekovnom odvajanju etike od prava i politike, Pažanin se oslonio na aristotelovsku tradiciju praktične filozofije koja polazi od jedinstva etike i politike. Praktičnu filozofiju promatra kao samostalno i neovisno područje o poietičnoj techne i teoretskoj episteme. Takav pristup praktičnoj filozofiji nadilazi poteškoće aprirornoga univerzalizma teoretskoga utemeljenja etičkih normi te bolje odgovara suvremenoj raznovrsnosti svijeta života i njegovoj složenosti. Pažaninovu životnu filozofsku misiju može se prispodobiti Gadamerovu opisu »nasljedovanja« Aristotela u nastojanju filozofa da se pomoću filozofske teorije stavi u službu ljudske prakse. Njegova je praktična životna filozofija svojevrsno misaono nastojanje oko razumijevanja i posuvremenjenja odnosa između refleksivnih oblika teorije i praktične umnosti povijesnoga svijeta života. Filozofska refleksija za njega ima zadaću ne samo primjereno razumjeti praktični svijet nego ga time i odgovorno mijenjati u nastojanju za ozbiljenjem najvišega ljudskog dobra kao bitne svrhe čovjekova življenja.
