Weber's Protestant ethic: origins, evidence, contexts.Hartmut Lehmann & Guenther Roth (eds.) - 1993 - New York, N.Y.: Cambridge University Press.
Although Weber's path-breaking work on the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism has received much attention ever since it first appeared in 1904-5, recent research has uncovered important new aspects. This volume, the result of an international, interdisciplinary effort, throws new light on the intellectual and cultural background of Weber's work, debates recent criticism of Weber's thesis, and confronts new historical insight on the seventeenth century with Weber's interpretation. Revisiting Weber's thesis serves to deepen our understanding of Weber as (...)

    Occurrence of superconductivity in R 2- z Ce z CuO 4 and related compounds.John Dow & Martin Lehmann - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (4):527-537.
The facts concerning the occurrence of superconductivity in R 2- z Ce z CuO 4 and in R 2- z Th z CuO 4 are studied using a combination of simple tools: a hard-sphere model, the self-consistent bond-valence-sum method and Madelung potential calculations. Doping by isolated substitutional Ce should produce Ce 3+ , and not Ce 4+ , causing us to conclude that the dopants are not isolated, but pairs, which make the material p type and not n type. The (...)

For an indeterministic ethics. The emptiness of the rule in dubio pro vita and life cessation decisions.Dragan Pavlovic, Christian Lehmann & Michael Wendt - 2009 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 4:6-.
It is generally claimed that there exist exceptional circumstances when taking human life may be approved and when such actions may be justified on moral grounds. Precise guidelines in the medical field for making such decisions concerning patients who are terminally ill or have irreparable injuries incompatible with a bearable life, are difficult to establish. Recommendations that take the particular logical form of a rule, such as "in dubio pro vita", "when in doubt favour life") have been suggested and in (...)

    Nonmonotonic reasoning: From finitary relations to infinitary inference operations.Michael Freund & Daniel Lehmann - 1994 - Studia Logica 53 (2):161 - 201.
    A. Tarski [22] proposed the study of infinitary consequence operations as the central topic of mathematical logic. He considered monotonicity to be a property of all such operations. In this paper, we weaken the monotonicity requirement and consider more general operations, inference operations. These operations describe the nonmonotonic logics both humans and machines seem to be using when infering defeasible information from incomplete knowledge. We single out a number of interesting families of inference operations. This study of infinitary inference operations (...)

Networks in nature possess a remarkable amount of structure. Via a series of data‐driven discoveries, the cutting edge of network science has recently progressed from positing that the random graphs of mathematical graph theory might accurately describe real networks to the current viewpoint that networks in nature are highly complex and structured entities. The identification of high order structures in networks unveils insights into their functional organization. Recently, Clauset, Moore, and Newman,1 introduced a new algorithm that identifies such heterogeneities in (...)

Test Preparation in Figural Matrices Tests: Focus on the Difficult Rules.Kai Krautter, Jessica Lehmann, Eva Kleinort, Marco Koch, Frank M. Spinath & Nicolas Becker - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
It is well documented that training the rules employed in figural matrices tests enhances test performance. Previous studies only compare experimental conditions in which all or no rules were trained and therefore ignore the particular influence of knowledge about the easy and difficult rules. With the current study, we wanted to provide some first insights into this topic. Respondents were assigned to four groups that received training for no rules, only the easy rules, only the difficult rules, or for all (...)

Das Böse: drei Annäherungen.Ingolf U. Dalferth, Karl Lehmann & Navid Kermani (eds.)

Robot-mediated interviews with children.Luke Jai Wood, Hagen Lehmann, Kerstin Dautenhahn, Ben Robins, Austen Rainer & Dag Syrdal - 2016 - Latest Issue of Interaction Studies 17 (3):438-460.
To date research investigating the potential of Robot-Mediated Interviews has focused on establishing how children respond to robots in an interview scenario. In order to test if an RMI approach would work in a real world setting, it is important to establish what the experts would require from such a system. To determine the needs of such expert users we conducted three user panels with groups of potential real world users to gather their views of our current system and find (...)

Elite Players Invest Additional Time for Making Better Embodied Choices.Matthias Hinz, Nico Lehmann & Lisa Musculus - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Expert athletes are determined to make faster and better decisions, as revealed in several simple heuristic studies using verbal reports or micro-movement responses. However, heuristic decision-making experiments that require motor responses, also being considered as the embodied-choice experiments, are still underrepresented. Furthermore, it is less understood how decision time and confidence depend on the type of embodied choices players make. To scrutinize the decision-making processes, this study investigated the embodied choices of male athletes with different expertise in a close-to-real-life environment; (...)

Association of Excessive Sleepiness, Pathological Fatigue, Depression, and Anxiety With Different Severity Levels of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.Karin Elisabeth Sundt Mjelle, Sverre Lehmann, Ingvild West Saxvig, Shashi Gulati & Bjørn Bjorvatn - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate possible associations between obstructive sleep apnea and fatigue. This naturally led to considering the association between OSA and excessive sleepiness, depression, and anxiety.BackgroundOSA is a highly prevalent sleep disorder, associated with a risk of hypertension, cardiovascular events, daytime sleepiness, poor cognitive function, and sudden death during sleep. Both excessive sleepiness, fatigue, and symptoms of depression are frequently reported.Method5,464 patients referred to a university hospital for obstructive sleep apnea underwent standard respiratory polygraphy. The (...)
