Negative Anthropologie Bei Plessner Und Adorno: Theoretische Grundlagen – Geschichtsphilosophie – Moderne-Kritik.Sebastian Edinger - 2022 - Boston: De Gruyter.

    Why bacteria matter in animal development and evolution.Sebastian Fraune & Thomas C. G. Bosch - 2010 - Bioessays 32 (7):571-580.
While largely studied because of their harmful effects on human health, there is growing appreciation that bacteria are important partners for invertebrates and vertebrates, including man. Epithelia in metazoans do not only select their microbiota; a coevolved consortium of microbes enables both invertebrates and vertebrates to expand the range of diet supply, to shape the complex immune system and to control pathogenic bacteria. Microbes in zebrafish and mice regulate gut epithelial homeostasis. In a squid, microbes control the development of the (...)

  5. Sartre, Schelling, and onto-theology.Sebastian Gardner - 2006 - Religious Studies 42 (3):247-271.
It is well known that Sartre describes his form of existentialism as atheistic, and much of the rhetoric of Sartrean existentialism draws off the image of God's absence from the world. There are nevertheless, I argue, deep grounds for thinking that the coherence and well-groundedness of Sartre's thought requires that his phenomenological ontology take finally the form of an onto-theology: Sartre's ontology runs into difficulties concerning the origin of the for-itself and the unity of being; an onto-theology like Schelling's, which (...)

Non-unitary evolution of quantum logics.Sebastian Fortin, Federico Holik & Leonardo Vanni - 2016 - In F. Bagarello, R. Passante & C. Trapani (eds.), Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in Quantum Physics. Springer Proceedings in Physics, vol 184. Springer, Cham. pp. 219-234.
In this work we present a dynamical approach to quantum logics. By changing the standard formalism of quantum mechanics to allow non-Hermitian operators as generators of time evolution, we address the question of how can logics evolve in time. In this way, we describe formally how a non-Boolean algebra may become a Boolean one under certain conditions. We present some simple models which illustrate this transition and develop a new quantum logical formalism based in complex spectral resolutions, a notion that (...)

    Quantum Decoherence: A Logical Perspective.Sebastian Fortin & Leonardo Vanni - 2014 - Foundations of Physics 44 (12):1258-1268.
The so-called classical limit of quantum mechanics is generally studied in terms of the decoherence of the state operator that characterizes a system. This is not the only possible approach to decoherence. In previous works we have presented the possibility of studying the classical limit in terms of the decoherence of relevant observables of the system. On the basis of this approach, in this paper we introduce the classical limit from a logical perspective, by studying the way in which the (...)

In this blog entry, which addresses a broader audience, I wonder what exactly historians of philosophy do and how their work relates to non-historical work in philosophy. In particular, I raise the question why systematic philosophers and historians of philosophy are relatively close to each other. After all, they often publish in the same journals and work at the same departments. This is surprising, given that asking what X is seems to be rather different from asking what some person a (...)

IIoT and cyber-resilience.Sebastian Gajek, Michael Lees & Christoph Jansen - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-11.
Contemporary business often encompasses or aspires towards the automated, networked production of industrial goods across transnational supply chains that have many digitalized interfaces. This allows competitive operations in time, costs, and quality, which have been widely discussed. On the downside, it entails cyber threats with significant risks for society in areas including business, environment, and health. Hence, to adequately manage these risks in the emerging digital world, there is a vital necessity to raise awareness, establish, maintain, and further develop cyber-security (...)

Reply to Dews, and a plea for Schelling.Sebastian Gardner - 2017 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 25 (1):179-191.
The discussion is a response to Dews on the question of how Schelling's Freiheitsschrift should be interpreted. It falls into two halves, the first defending my interpretation, and the second expanding on the case that Dews makes for the unavoidability of metaphysics in the theory of human freedom, with which I am in full agreement. The main criticism that Dews makes of my reading is that the argument I attribute to Schelling concerning the metaphysical significance of evil rests on Kantian (...)

A feasible theory of truth over combinatory algebra.Sebastian Eberhard - 2014 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 165 (5):1009-1033.
We define an applicative theory of truth TPTTPT which proves totality exactly for the polynomial time computable functions. TPTTPT has natural and simple axioms since nearly all its truth axioms are standard for truth theories over an applicative framework. The only exception is the axiom dealing with the word predicate. The truth predicate can only reflect elementhood in the words for terms that have smaller length than a given word. This makes it possible to achieve the very low proof-theoretic strength. (...)

Für eine Topik der Bildkritik.Sebastian Egenhofer - 2011 - Zeitschrift für Ästhetik Und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft 56 (1):143-150.
Starting from Kant’s conception of critique as »Grenzziehung,« the immanent representation of being, or, the conscious world, is understood as a screening off of its noumenal ground. Materially bound images gain a particular function in the explication of the structure of this immanence. As objects within the phenomenal world they duplicate the world’s phenomenal- ity in the dimension of iconic semblance by (partially) negating their material support. This cleavage between the image’s phenomenality and its materiality makes images into possible catalysts (...)

    Alternative(s): Better or just different?Sebastian Engelmann - 2022 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 56 (4):523-534.
This paper aspires to show the often-obscured structure of alternatives in education. Alternative education is generally understood as an umbrella term for educational thought and practice for and in schools differing from an assumed ‘mainstream’, where ‘alternative’ is often taken to mean ‘better’. In many cases, ‘mainstream’ serves as an empty signifier that can be substituted by various forms of criticism. Just as progressive education is supposed to remedy all the ills of traditional education, alternative education is often positioned as (...)

Before an aggregation of persons can be said to constitute a community there must exist a sharing of a body of norms or values, or asystem of beliefs or morals. In sociology this conception frequentlyappears in the term “consensus,” and in political science a similar conception goes by the phrase “social contract.” The two conceptions are not identical and an important point of difference will be touched on later, but according to this position knowledge of and adherence to the fundamental (...)

What's Belief Got to Do With It? A Response to Crane.Sebastian Gäb - 2023 - Neue Zeitschrift für Systematicsche Theologie Und Religionsphilosophie 64 (4):430-437.
This paper argues that even Crane’s modified account of belief doesn’t do justice to all varieties of religious belief. Particularly beliefs associated with ritual behavior don’t seem to match the criteria of Crane’s alternative account. So, the question remains whether these beliefs should still be called beliefs, or whether the standard model of belief is even more false than Crane suspects.

My face through the looking-glass: The effect of mirror reversal on reflection size estimation.Sebastian Dieguez, Jakob Scherer & Olaf Blanke - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (4):1452-1459.
People tend to grossly overestimate the size of their mirror-reflected face. Although this overestimation bias is robust, not much is known about its relationships to self-face perception. In two experiments, we investigated the overestimation bias as a function of the presentation of the own face , the identity of the seen face, and prior exposure to a real mirror. For this we developed a computerized task requiring size estimations of displayed faces. We replicated the observation that people overestimate the size (...)
