The Japanese value of harmony and nursing ethics.Konishi Emiko, Yahiro Michiko, Nakajima Naoko & Ono Miki - 2009 - Nursing Ethics 16 (5):625-636.
Harmony is one of the most fundamental Japanese values. It is derived from Confucianism and encompasses a state of mind, an action process and outcomes of the action. This article draws on research data and discusses Japanese nurses’ perceptions of harmony as reflected in their everyday practice. The most important virtues for these nurses were reported as politeness and respect for other persons. The outcome from the nurses’ harmonious practice, it is claimed, benefited patients and created peaceful, harmonious relationships for (...)

Ethical issues arising from the government allocation of physicians to rural areas: a case study from Japan.Masatoshi Matsumoto & Tatsuki Aikyo - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
The geographically inequitable distribution of physicians has long posed a serious social problem in Japan. The government tackled this problem by establishing and managing Jichi Medical University (JMU) and regional quotas (RQs) for medical schools. JMU/RQs recruit local students who hope to work as physicians in rural areas, educate them for 6 years without tuition (JMU) or with scholarship (RQs), and after graduation, assign them to their home prefectures for 9 years, including 4–6 years of rural service. JMU/RQs entrants now (...)

Nurses’ Attitudes Towards Developing a Do Not Resuscitate Policy in Japan.Emiko Konishi - 1998 - Nursing Ethics 5 (3):218-227.
Two questionnaire surveys are reported describing the attitudes of 127 Japanese nurses towards developing a do not resuscitate policy. The background information features the Japanese health care situations: a lack of policies for end-of-life care decisions; frequent life-prolonging treatments initiated without the patient’s knowledge or consent; ethical dilemmas confronting nurses in relation to such treatments; and the public’s growing concern over end-of-life care. A hypothetical DNR policy was used in which a health professional asked patients about their decision regarding DNR. (...)

Impact of Early-Commenced and Continued Sports Training on the Precuneus in Older Athletes.Masatoshi Yamashita, Maki Suzuki, Toshikazu Kawagoe, Kohei Asano, Masatoshi Futada, Ryusuke Nakai, Nobuhito Abe & Kaoru Sekiyama - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Intervention studies on sedentary older adults have demonstrated that commencing physical exercise at an older age has a positive effect on brain structure. Although this suggests that older athletes with lifelong sports training have larger gray matter volume in some brain regions compared to age-matched non-athletes, evidence in the literature is scarce. Moreover, it remains unclear whether a larger GMV is associated with training intensity or period of training in life. To address these gaps in the literature, we compared regional (...)

Neural Advantages of Older Musicians Involve the Cerebellum: Implications for Healthy Aging Through Lifelong Musical Instrument Training.Masatoshi Yamashita, Chie Ohsawa, Maki Suzuki, Xia Guo, Makiko Sadakata, Yuki Otsuka, Kohei Asano, Nobuhito Abe & Kaoru Sekiyama - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
This study compared 30 older musicians and 30 age-matched non-musicians to investigate the association between lifelong musical instrument training and age-related cognitive decline and brain atrophy. Although previous research has demonstrated that young musicians have larger gray matter volume in the auditory-motor cortices and cerebellum than non-musicians, little is known about older musicians. Music imagery in young musicians is also known to share a neural underpinning [the supramarginal gyrus and cerebellum] with music performance. Thus, we hypothesized that older musicians would (...)

Contraconscious Internal Theories Influence Lexical Choice during Sentence Completion.Donald G. MacKay & Toshi Konishi - 1994 - Consciousness and Cognition 3 (2):196-222.
This paper examines how inner theories influence lexical choice. Subjects in one study completed auditorily presented sentence fragments, some of which contained nonhuman antecedents such as dog and cat. Subjects were more likely to use human pronouns rather than it for referring to pets rather than nonpets , and antecedents that were liked rather than disliked , familiar rather than unfamiliar , named rather than unnamed , rational rather than nonrational , and engaging in typically human rather than nonhuman activities (...)

A Comparative Study of Chinese, American and Japanese Nurses’ Perceptions of Ethical Role Responsibilities.Samantha Pang, Aiko Sawada, Emiko Konishi, Douglas Olsen & Philip Yu - 2003 - Nursing Ethics 10 (3):295-311.
This article reports a survey of nurses in different cultural settings to reveal their perceptions of ethical role responsibilities relevant to nursing practice. Drawing on the Confucian theory of ethics, the first section attempts to understand nursing ethics in the context of multiple role relationships. The second section reports the administration of the Role Responsibilities Questionnaire (RRQ) to a sample of nurses in China (n = 413), the USA (n = 163), and Japan (n = 667). Multidimensional preference analysis revealed (...)

A Pilot Study of Selected Japanese Nurses' Ideas on Patient Advocacy.Anne J. Davis, Emiko Konishi & Marie Tashiro - 2003 - Nursing Ethics 10 (4):404-413.
This pilot study had two purposes: (1) to review recent Japanese nursing literature on nursing advocacy; and (2) to obtain data from nurses on advocacy. For the second purpose, 24 nurses at a nursing college in Japan responded to a questionnaire. The concept of advocacy, taken from the West, has become an ethical ideal for Japanese nurses but one that they do not always understand, or, if they do, they find it difficult to fulfil. They cite nursing leadership support as (...)

The Ethics of Withdrawing Artificial Food and Fluid from Terminally Ill Patients: an end-of-life dilemma for Japanese nurses and families.Emiko Konishi, Anne J. Davis & Toshiaki Aiba - 2002 - Nursing Ethics 9 (1):7-19.
End-of-life issues have become an urgent problem in Japan, where people are among the longest lived in the world and most of them die while connected to high-technology medical equipment. This study examines a sensitive end-of-life ethical issue that concerns patients, families and nurses: the withdrawal of artificial food and fluid from terminally ill patients. A sample of 160 Japanese nurses, who completed a questionnaire that included forced-choice and open-ended questions, supported this act under only two specific conditions: if the (...)

This article, written from research data, focuses on the possible meaning of the data rather than on detailed statistical reporting. It defines whistleblowing as an act of the international nursing ethical ideal of advocacy, and places it in the larger context of professional responsibility. The experiences, actions, and ethical positions of 24 Japanese nurses regarding whistleblowing or reporting a colleague for wrongdoing provide the data. Of these respondents, similar in age, educational level and clinical experience, 10 had previously reported another (...)

We examined amygdala subregion volumes in patients with a first episode of major depression and in healthy subjects. Covariate-adjusted linear regression was performed to compare the MD and healthy groups, and adjustments for age, gender, and total estimated intracranial volume showed no differences in amygdala subregion volumes between the healthy and MD groups. Within the MD group, we examined the association between amygdala subregion volume and the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression score and the HAMD subscale score, and found (...)

Detection of EEG-resting state independent networks by eLORETA-ICA method.Yasunori Aoki, Ryouhei Ishii, Roberto D. Pascual-Marqui, Leonides Canuet, Shunichiro Ikeda, Masahiro Hata, Kaoru Imajo, Haruyasu Matsuzaki, Toshimitsu Musha, Takashi Asada, Masao Iwase & Masatoshi Takeda - 2015 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9:111175.
Recent fMRI studies have shown that functional networks can be extracted even from resting state data, the so called “resting state networks” (RSNs) by applying independent component analysis (ICA). However, compared to fMRI, EEG and MEG have much higher temporal resolution and provide a direct estimation of cortical activity. To date, MEG studies have applied ICA for separate frequency bands only, disregarding cross-frequency couplings. In this study, we aimed to detect EEG-RSNs and their interactions in all frequency bands. We applied (...)

Ethical Issues After the Disclosure of a Terminal Illness: Danish and Norwegian hospice nurses' reflections.Margarethe Lorensen, Anne J. Davis, Emiko Konishi & Eli H. Bunch - 2003 - Nursing Ethics 10 (2):175-185.
This research explored the ethical issues that nurses reported in the process of elaboration and further disclosure after an initial diagnosis of a terminal illness had been given. One hundred and six hospice nurses in Norway and Denmark completed a questionnaire containing 45 items of forced-choice and open-ended questions. This questionnaire was tested and used in three countries prior to this study; for this research it was tested on Danish and Norwegian nurses. All respondents supported the ethics of ongoing disclosure (...)
