Kant’s revolutionary new approach to philosophy was accompanied by the introduction of a largely novel terminology. With the Kant-Lexikon, a lexical reference gives the modern reader access to his work on the basis of present-day editions and takes into account 20th century and contemporary research and advances in lexicology. The Kant-Lexikon includes 2395 entries authored by 221 scholars.

Catharine MacKinnon has pioneered a new brand of anti-pornography argument. In particular, MacKinnon claims that pornography silences women in a way that violates their right to free speech. In what follows, we focus on a certain account of silencing put forward by Jennifer Hornsby and Rae Langton, and we defend that account against two important objections. The first objection contends that this account makes a crucial but false assumption about the necessary role of hearer recognition in successful speech acts. In (...) response, we argue that, as silencing primarily concerns communication, Hornsby and Langton are perfectly correct to treat hearer recognition as they do. The second objection contends that their particular account of silencing has the unacceptable result of undermining the responsibility of rapists. The Kant-Lexikon is a guide to the philosophical work of Immanuel Kant and incorporates the latest scholarship. This textbook edition presents the most important entries contained in the comprehensive, three-volume lexicon released in 2015.

Kant's critical philosophy marks the end of a two-thousand year tradition of metaphysics. Against this older tradition, Kant proposes a new metaphysics of knowledge and human freedom with the autonomy of the subject as its principle. Led by the principle of subjectivity, it attempts to obtain a unified understanding of the whole world organized into a system of reason. In this way, the idea of classical metaphysics receives a new controversial interpretation still discussed today. The present article discusses the relation of Th. Nagel’s ethics of altruism with kantian ethics. According to Nagel himself, his position resembles that of Kant in two respects: it defends the thesis of the autonomy of moral motivation, and it bases moral on a determinate self-conception of persons. However, differently from Kant, the principle of Nagel’s ethics is just the modest presupposition that persons essentially understand themselves as being one among a plurality of other persons. Starting from the nagelian argument (...) in The Possibility of Altruism (1970), but contemplating also Nagel’s more recent position in The Last Word (1999), it is argued that in order to defend his conception of a rational ethics in a convincing way, Nagel has to approximate himself more to the kantian foundation of ethics than he wants to admit. O presente artigo discute a relação da ética do altruísmo, defendida por Thomas Nagel, com a ética kantiana. Segundo o próprio Nagel, sua posição é semelhante à de Kant sob dois aspectos: ela defende a tese da autonomia da motivação moral, e ela funda a moral numa determinada autoconcepção da pessoa. No entanto, diferentemente de Kant, o princípio da ética nageliana é apenas o pressuposto modesto de que uma pessoa essencialmente considera a si mesma como sendo uma numa pluralidade de (...) pessoas. Partindo do argumento nageliano em The Possibility of Altruísmo, mas contemplando também a posição mais recente de Nagel em The Last Word, argumenta-se que Nagel só pode defender sua concepção de uma ética racional de modo convincente, se ele se aproximar mais da fundamentação kantiana da ética do que ele pretende. Sie alle kommen darin überein, daß das Fichtesche Prinzip des Wissens nicht selbstgenügsam ist und (...) seinen Grund in einem Sein hat, das dem Wissen und der Reflexion entzogen ist. […] Im Jahre 2004 jährte sich das Todesjahr Immanuel Kants zum 200. Mal. Aus diesem Anlass fanden in aller Welt Symposien, Tagungen und Kongresse zur Philosophie Kants und ihrer Bedeutung für unsere Gegenwart statt. Es erschien auch eine neue, viel beachtete Biographie von Manfred Kühn. Nicht Hegel, nicht Nietzsche, nicht Heidegger und auch nicht Wittgenstein – Immanuel Kant, so scheint es, ist am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zum Philosophen der Welt geworden. In einer Zeit, in der die ideologischen Konfrontationen zwischen (...) Ost und West nicht mehr bestehen, in der nun aber religiöser Fanatismus und Terror zu einer permanenten Bedrohung der westlichen Welt geworden sind, wird Kants Kosmopolitismus der Vernunft zunehmend zu einer Leitlinie für die Orientierung im personalen wie im gesellschaftlich-politischen Leben. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde und wird immer wieder auf Kants Schrift Zum ewigen Frieden hingewiesen, in der Kant das Modell einer weltbürgerlichen Gesellschaft autonomer Staaten entworfen hat. Dazu gibt es heute weniger denn je eine Alternative. Der nächste große internationale Kant-Kongress wird im September 2005 daher auch unter dem Generaltitel „Recht und Frieden in der Philosophie Kants“ in São Paulo statffinden. (shrink)
