Leur autorité se déployait selon une masculinité particulière, fondée sur la valeur guerrière, l’exercice du commandement, et l’invisibilisation du rôle politique des femmes. Ancien employé de ferme, José Antonio Páez devint un redoutable officier cavalier puis général-en-chef. À la faveur de la victoire contre l’Espagne, il s’imposa comme le nouvel homme fort du Venezuela, et engagea la sécession avec la (...) Colombie présidée par Bolívar. Premier président de la République du Venezuela, Páez incarnait une forme de césarisme patriarcal, caractérisé par une forte personnalisation du pouvoir, fondé sur la valorisation de l’homme guerrier, le monopole masculin de la citoyenneté et la métaphore du « père de la nation ». On se propose d’étudier ici l’unité, la diversité et l’évolution de la pensée de Merleau-Ponty à travers ses deux principaux recueils d’essais, Signes publié en 1960, et Sens et non-sens, paru en 1948, dont l’un annonce l’ouvrage posthume sur Le visible et l’invisible (1964), et l’autre prolonge de l’intérieur la Phénoménologie de la perception (1945). On est ainsi conduit à comprendre comment le problème fondamental de la pensée de Merleau-Ponty autorise la diversité de son œuvre, entre philosophie, sciences humaines et (...) politique, sans espoir de synthèse ou de système, mais conjurant aussi toute dispersion et toute résignation. L’évolution même de cette pensée d’une étape à l’autre en confirme le double héritage, autour d’une intuition centrale et d’une variété irréductible d’expériences. (shrink)

Faut-il servir le prince? Ou quel est le rapport du lettré avec le pouvoir? Mencius et Zhuangzi, deux grands penseurs contemporains du IV e siècle avant notre ère, proposent deux réponses différentes. L’un conditionne l’offre et l’autre la refuse radicalement. Pour l’héritier spirituel de Confucius, un prince doit au préalable être doté de la vertu pour qu’on puisse l’aider à réaliser de grandes œuvres. Le rang social, l’un des paramètres qui déterminent les rapports entre un prince et un lettré, n’est (...) pas prioritaire. Selon Zhuangzi, et même s’il relativise à maintes reprises la vie et la mort, servir un prince revient à perdre l’énergie vitale, à risquer inutilement sa vie. Il rejette en effet tout rapport social de contrainte qui prive l’homme de sa liberté. Cette attitude suscitera la critique des confucianistes qui lui reprocheront sa méconnaissance des affaires humaines. Néanmoins, ces deux positions à la fois opposées et complémentaires ont durablement marqué les conceptions politiques des lettrés chinois. (shrink)

L’utilisation de méthodes informatiques dans la conception pré-clinique de molécules thérapeutiques s’est développée à partir de 1970 dans le cadre d’une stratégie dite de « rational drug design ». Une analyse de cette approche est d’abord développée. Deux contextualisations de ces pratiques sont ensuite proposées. Certains résultats de l’historiographie des médicaments permettent, premièrement, de préciser la doctrine particulière du médicament à laquelle cette stratégie se rattache. Deuxièmement, puisque la rationalité déclarée de cette dernière s’appuie sur des outils scientifiques développés en (...) (bio)chimie, une analyse de leur statut épistémologique est conduite en étudiant leur émergence. Ceci permet de comprendre les spécificités que la rationalité véhiculée par ces outils computationnels comporte (représentation de la matière particulière dont la validité est uniquement pragmatique, emploi d’un grand nombre de données empiriques, réalisation d’estimations et approximations, diffusion de ces dernières sous forme de programmes informatiques). The essay hypothesizes a norm condition of stasis—the mood of sentient peace occupied on a quiet porch. From there the psyche is drawn upward by concept, into the benign/abstract world or downward into the pre-verbal which links us with prespeech man/woman. Is there any default position in this map of the positions of consciousness?

The two essays included here are parts of a longer study of temporality, and the genesis of the “religious.” The first part, “Multiple Nows,” depicts a universe in which a present to past relation is establishable from any and every point in consciousness. The resulting perspective differs from that offered by the linear timeline of chronological history. Remembering where I put my glasses is an historicizing act, as fully as is remembering when the Battle of Zama was fought or who (...) won there. On this alternate view of temporality the genesis of the historical perspective is the historicizing subject. The second essay, “The History of a House,” places the observer before an historical structure, then asks where the historicity in the structure is. We discover that the historicity is put there by the observer/subject. This discovery resembles our earlier discovery that historicity is generated by an infinite sequence of nows. The two essays converge on a description of historical cognition as subject-generated. (shrink)

Résumé — Le but de cet article est de montrer que le cœur de la pensée de Simone Weil réside moins dans une philosophie de la nécessité comme telle que dans une philosophie de la rencontre de la nécessité et de l’âme humaine, et de ses effets, du malheur à l’amour, en passant par la vérité. Présente d’emblée, cette pensée connaît cependant deux étapes, comme si l’accent passait de la nécessité à ses effets, étapes que l’on étudie à travers deux (...) textes précis commentés comme les classiques qu’ils devraient être dans la philosophie du XXe siècle en France. C’est aussi par là que Simone Weil rejoint les principaux de ses contemporains, parmi lesquels Camus et Cavaillès, et ainsi le cœur du moment de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en philosophie comme ailleurs.— This paper intends to show how the core of Simone Weil’s thought is to be found less in a philosophy of necessity as such, than in a philosophy of the encounter between necessity and human soul, and the effects of that encounter, from woe to love, and including truth. However constant, this thought evolves through a difference of accent, as if the stress went from necessity to its effect ; this difference is here studied through the reading of two major writings, which deserve to be considered as XXth Century philosophical classics. It is also through this central thought that Simone Weil meets with such major contemporary philosophical figures as Camus and Cavaillès, and thus with what should be called the moment of the Second World War, in philosophy as elsewhere. Notre article se propose d’articuler au domaine de l’esthétique notre expérience en tant qu’organisateur d’expositions présentant des artistes internationaux dans un centre d’art indépendant au Japon. En nous basant sur une théorie de la réception des œuvres, nous proposerons une lecture des appréhensions habituelles des modalités courantes au Japon par le renvoi aux formules de Nishida concernant l’acte artistique. Dès lors se croisent deux notions de marginalité. The idea that deep brain stimulation (DBS) induces changes to personality, identity, agency, authenticity, autonomy and self (PIAAAS) is so deeply entrenched within neuroethics discourses that it has become an unchallenged narrative. In this article, we critically assess evidence about putative effects of DBS on PIAAAS. We conducted a literature review of more than 1535 articles to investigate the prevalence of scientific evidence regarding these potential DBS-induced changes. While we observed an increase in the number of publications in theoretical neuroethics (...) that mention putative DBS-induced changes to patients’ postoperative PIAAAS, we found a critical lack of primary empirical studies corroborating these claims. Our findings strongly suggest that the theoretical neuroethics debate on putative effects of DBS relies on very limited empirical evidence and is, instead, reliant on unsubstantiated speculative assumptions probablyin lieuof robust evidence. As such, this may reflect the likelihood of a speculative neuroethics bubble that may need to be deflated. Nevertheless, despite the low number of first-hand primary studies and large number of marginal and single case reports, potential postoperative DBS changes experienced by patients remain a critical ethical concern. We recommend further empirical research in order to enhance theoretical neuroethics work in the area. In particular, we call for the development of better instruments capable of capturing potential postoperative variations of PIAAAS. (shrink)

This article defends a Platonist view of streaming. It is opposite to the mainstream representation that streaming has “liquidated” the structure both objective and collective of musical experience. On the contrary, streaming is the support of a new kind of musical object, which is distinct both from the allographic notational objects and from the phonographic ones. This third kind of object has to be characterized as a flux-object. The way it is diffused and accessible implies a new kind of experience. (...) Cyberspace in which this experience takes place is characterized as an “hyperobjective noosphere”: the relation of streaming with the subjects of musical experience is akin to the relation of atmosphere or biosphere to the living beings. This article invites to an ascetic exercise: the everyday experience of the listener has to become mindful of the “swarm community” in which s/he participates by streaming. Thus it develops a renewed musical Platonism, as a kind of response to “object-oriented ontologies”. According to this renewed Platonism, dispositional properties are essential to the objects. Objects have no sense apart from the relation to individual and collective subjectivations that are potential parts of them. (shrink)

. Computational chemistry grew in a new era of “desktop modeling,” which coincided with a growing demand for modeling software, especially from the pharmaceutical industry. Parameterization of models in computational chemistry is an arduous enterprise, and we argue that this activity leads, in this specific context, to tensions among scientists regarding the epistemic opacity transparency of parameterized methods and the software implementing them. We relate one flame war from the Computational Chemistry mailing List in order to assess in detail the (...) relationships between modeling methods, parameterization, software and the various forms of their enclosure or disclosure. Our claim is that parameterization issues are an important and often neglected source of epistemic opacity and that this opacity is entangled in methods and software alike. Models and software must be addressed together to understand the epistemological tensions at stake. (shrink)

In this book Frederic Schick develops his challenge to standard decision theory. He argues that talk of the beliefs and desires of an agent is not sufficient to explain choices. To account for a given choice we need to take into consideration how the agent understands the problem, how he sees in a selective way the options open to him. The author applies his new logic to a host of common human predicaments. Why do people in choice experiments act so (...) often against expectations? Why do people cooperate in situations where textbook logic predicts that they won't? What exactly is weakness of will? What are people reporting when they say their lives have no meaning for them? The phenomenological effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on the self of the patient remains poorly understood and under described in the literature, despite growing evidence that a significant number of patients experience postoperative neuropsychiatric changes. To address this lack of phenomenological evidence, we conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with 17 patients with Parkinson's disease who had undergone DBS. Exploring the subjective character specific to patients' experience of being implanted gives empirical and conceptual understanding of the potential phenomenon of DBS-induced self-estrangement. (...) Our study concluded that (1) the more patients preoperatively felt alienated by their illness, the more they experienced postoperative self-estrangement, and (2) the notion of self-estrangement seems to exist in association with certain common qualitative characters, namely, loss of control, which reflects a deteriorative estrangement, and distorted perception of capacities, which reveals a restorative estrangement. These findings indicate that subjective self-reports help us to understand some aspects of the potential phenomenon of DBS-induced self-estrangement. (shrink)

We argue that a fashionable interpretation of the theory of natural selection as a claim exclusively about populations is mistaken. The interpretation rests on adopting an analysis of fitness as a probabilistic propensity which cannot be substantiated, draws parallels with thermodynamics which are without foundations, and fails to do justice to the fundamental distinction between drift and selection. This distinction requires a notion of fitness as a pairwise comparison between individuals taken two at a time, and so vitiates the interpretation (...) of the theory as one about populations exclusively.
