The present work is an attempt to break ground in mathematics proper, armed with the accepting view just described. Specifically, we shall examine various versions of antinomic set theory, in particular the axiom of choice, keeping the presentation as intuitive as possible, more in the manner of a nineteenth century paper than as a thoroughly formalized system. Phaedo of Elis was well-known as a writer of Socratic dialogues, and it seems inconceivable that Plato could have been innocent of intertextuality when, excusing himself on the grounds of illness, he made him the narrator of one of his own: the "Phaedo". In fact the psychological model outlined by Socrates in this dialogue converges with the evidence we have (especially from fragments of the Zopyrus) for Phaedo's own beliefs about the soul. Specifically, Phaedo seems to have thought that non-rational (...) desires were ineliminable epiphenomena of the body, that reason was something distinct, and that the purpose of philosophy was its 'cure' and 'purification'. If Plato's intention with the "Phaedo" is to assert the separability and immortality of reason (whatever one might think about desire and pleasure), then Phaedo provides a useful standpoint for him. In particular, Phaedo has arguments that are useful against the 'harmony-theorists' (and are the more useful rhetorically speaking since it is only over the independence of reason that Phaedo disagrees with them). At the same time as allying himself with Phaedo, however, Plato is able to improve on him by adding to the demonstration that reason is independent a proof that it is actually immortal. (shrink)

O nosso trabalho tem por objetivo verificar a ocorrência de hebraísmos e helenismos na composição do Psalterium da Vulgata. Para que não houvesse confusão quanto à nomenclatura, achamos por bem chamar o latim presente no Saltério de latim bíblico, uma vez que latim eclesiástico e latim cristão, aos nossos olhos, são denominações muito amplas, não envolvendo apenas, como é notório, o texto da Bíblia, mas também outras fontes e escritores cristãos. O corpus do nosso trabalho foi elaborado a partir do (...) texto áureo da Vulgata; no que concerne ao texto grego, recorremos à Septuaginta e, no que diz respeito ao hebraico, fizemos uso dos comentários presentes na obra The Latin Psalter, de David J. Ladouceur. Embora esta obra tenha sido a fonte inspiradora de nosso artigo, valemo-nos também, para corroborar os comentários sobre a presença grega e hebraica no texto latino, da Bíblia de Jerusalém e da Nova Versio Latina, que procuram, diferentemente da Vulgata, realizar uma tradução ad sensum, indo, assim, de encontro à versão latina, que faz uma tradução ad verbum. The cover of a recent edition of Time magazine features a research subject in a cage with the caption human guinea pigs, signifying perhaps that human research subjects are no more protected from research abuses than are laboratory animals. That magazine issue highlights three well-publicized cases of human subjects research violations that occurred at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Pennsylvania, and (...) Johns Hopkins University.At St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a study that was co-sponsored by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center investigated an experimental vaccine for malignant melanoma. In that case, the chair of the university's institutional review board — the committee within each medical institution charged with ethics review of human research projects undertaken at that institution — and the dean of the University's College of Medicine allegedly concealed from both the IRB and the United States Food and Drug Administration a report by an outside consulting firm that had found severe deficiencies with the melanoma vaccine study being conducted at the medical center. 'Middle' Platonism has some claim to be the single most influential philosophical movement of the last two thousand years, as the common background to 'Neoplatonism' and the early development of Christian theology. This book breaks with the tradition of considering it primarily in terms of its sources, instead putting its contemporary philosophical engagements front and centre to reconstruct its philosophical motivations and activity across the full range of its interests. The volume explores the ideas at the heart of Platonist philosophy (...) in this period and includes a comprehensive selection of primary sources, a significant number of which appear in English translation for the first time, along with dedicated guides to the questions that have been, and might be, asked about the movement. The concept of the axial age, initially proposed by the philosopher Karl Jaspers to refer to a period in the first millennium BCE that saw the rise of major religious and philosophical figures and ideas throughout Eurasia, has gained an established position in a number of fields, including historical sociology, cultural sociology, and the sociology of religion. We explore whether the notion of an “axial age” has historical and intellectual cogency, or whether the authors who use the label of a (...) more free-floating “axiality” to connote varied “breakthroughs” in human experience may have a more compelling case. Throughout, we draw attention to ways in which uses of the axial age concept in contemporary social science vary in these and other respects. In the conclusion, we reflect on the value of the concept and its current uses and their utility in making sense of human experience. (shrink)

This book traces, for the first time, a revolution in philosophy which took place during the early centuries of our era. It reconstructs the philosophical basis of the Stoics' theory that fragments of an ancient and divine wisdom could be reconstructed from mythological traditions, and shows that Platonism was founded on an argument that Plato had himself achieved a full reconstruction of this wisdom, and that subsequent philosophies had only regressed once again in their attempts to "improve" on his achievement.

‘External memories’ raise a question about context: ‘external to what?’ External memory is a technical term applied to everything that can be memorized in an individual's environment. As a general rule I have decided to retain the technical terms that characterize the area of the topic under discussion. It was Ted Nelson who coined the word hypertext in 1967 to signify non-sequential writing as well as a computer technology that allowed the user to move about freely by means of software (...) links. I shall use the term software to mean computer programs. Electronic publishing started with the Xanadu system developed by Nelson. At the lowest level a hypertext is a system for managing databases that allows the user to connect together information screens using links. It is a collection of texts interconnected by means of interactive switches. This dynamic presentation of non-linear texts could not be printed on a conventional page. Hypertext allows the origin of a piece of information to be traced. In this article traceability is synonymous with explanation: ‘Why was this equipment designed in one way rather than another?’ It is about discovering the route of the design process that led to the eventual idea for the equipment. The necessary explanations are often required long after decisions were made, and this is why traceability is a matter of memory. The term agent is often used to mean those members of a community that act on its behalf. There are agents for a company or public department. There are biological agents. In a non-technological world traceability is ideally carried out by human agents who explain to other human agents. The term agent has been extended into the computer world to mean software to which the user delegates, sometimes unwittingly, tasks of varying complexity. These are then called software agents. In this article I refer to agent in its wider meaning, to be understood as an actor or an entity able to act in a limited context and having a quite specific role and appropriate resources. (shrink)

Com este trabalho, pretendemos trazer à luz a poesia amorosa de um dos mais célebres poetas neolatinos. Nascido em Cerreto di Spoleto, na Úmbria e educado em Perúgia, Giovanni Pontano (1429-1503) trabalhou na chancelaria real da Casa de Aragão, vindo a se tornar primeiro ministro, durante o governo do rei Fernando I. Embora na tenha se dedicado apenas à poesia amorosa, é sobre esta, por ora, que nossos comentários versarão. Estes comentários se baseiam em poemas endereçados às suas três musas (...) inspiradoras: Fannia, Adriana e Stella. A primeira é o amor da juventude; a segunda, com quem se casou, o amor da fase madura e, a última, o amor de sua velhice. Seus versos são graciosos, fluentes e intensamente sensuais, cheios de paixão e afeto, principalmente aqueles dirigidos à sua esposa. (shrink)

Para tanto, partimos do texto da Vulgata, texto este que grandemente influenciou e continua a influenciar as versões portuguesas. A título de cotejo, além do texto latino, fizemos uso de duas versões portuguesas: Almeida Revista e Atualizada e a Almeida Revista e Corrigida.

How closely do the theoretical notions of 'metaphor' and 'allegory' developed by ancient rhetoricians reflect the practice of classical writers? This question is tackled through eleven new essays by a team of distinguished academics. Ancient theories of metaphor are compared with twentieth century alternatives; theory is tested against practice; and allegory - a distinctive though neglected feature of ancient literature and philosophy - is explored against the background of the rhetoricians' claim that it is one form of metaphor.

This is a collection of essays written by leading experts in honour of Christopher Rowe, and inspired by his groundbreaking work in the exegesis of Plato. The authors represent scholarly traditions which are sometimes very different in their approaches and interests, and so rarely brought into dialogue with each other. This volume, by contrast, aims to explore synergies between them. De autoria de Giovanni Boccaccio, renomado poeta italiano do séculoXIV, esta biografia faz parte de uma coletânea intitulada De mulieribusclaris, composta de106 biografias que versam sobre a vida de mulheres de diferentes épocas. Além da tradução, faremos comentários linguístico-gramaticais, buscaremos saber as fontes que deram origem à elaboração desta obra e mostraremos o quanto ela pode ser útil como texto motivador para o ensino do latim.
