Volume 39 of the Tanner Lectures on Human Values includes lectures initially scheduled during the academic year 2019-2020. Owing to the global coronavirus pandemic, some were delivered at a later date. The Tanner Lectures are published in an annual volume. In addition to permanent lectures at nine universities, the Tanner Lectures on Human Values funds special one-time lectures at selected higher educational institutions in the United States and around the world.

Contemporary philosophy, from Kant through Bergson and Husserl to Heidegger, has assumed that time must be conceived as a fundamental determination of the subject: Time is not first in things but arises from actions, attitudes, or comportments through which a subject temporalizes mtime, expecting or remembering, anticipating the future or making a decision. Event and Time traces the genesis of this thesis through detailed, rigorous analyses of the philosophy of time in Plato, Aristotle, and Augustine, ultimately showing that, in the (...) development of metaphysics, the understanding of the temporal phenomenon as an inner-temporal phenomenon has made possible time's subjectivization. The book goes on to argue that time is in fact not thinkable according to metaphysical subjectivity. Instead, the guiding thread for the analysis of time must shift to the eventual hermeneutics of the human being, first developed in Event and World, and now deepened and completed in Event and Time. Romano's diptych makes a compelling, rigorous, and original philosophical contribution to the thinking of the event. (shrink)

Notre système économique et politique s'effondre sous nos yeux, la violence prend la forme d'un terrorisme universel, nous subissons la cruauté économique et (...) sommes les témoins du saccage de la terre. Lanza del Vasto l'avait prédit. Son enseignement fut prophétique, parce que lucide ; il est plus actuel que jamais. Seule la non-violence permet de sortir d'un système auto-destructeur, pensait-il. Pour Lanza comme pour Gandhi, elle est " force de vérité " et rien ne peut s'accomplir sans la " force de l'amour ". Par la conversion personnelle et collective qu'il implique, l'enseignement de Lanza del Vasto indique la voie et apprend à résister. Lanza del Vasto, serviteur de la Paix est le portrait d'un homme d'action et d'un penseur essentiel dont le message est à redécouvrir de toute urgence. (shrink)

L'Odyssée, le plus ancien poème de la culture occidentale, met en scène la métamorphose qui change Ulysse en lui-même sous les yeux dessillés de ceux qui échouaient jusque-là à le reconnaître. Ulysse constitue ainsi la première d'une longue série de figures donnant corps à cette opération mystérieuse : le passage de l'existence en régime d'obscurité à l'existence "en personne", dans une forme de vérité. Que signifie un tel passage? Comment s'opère cette transition? Quelles formes cette idée d'existence en personne a-t-elle (...) pu revêtir dans la pensée occidentale? Claude Romano interroge les sources, y compris lointaines, de cette idée d' "existence en vérité" telle qu'elle sous-tend notamment l'idéal moderne d'authenticité personnelle, en retraçant la généalogie de cet idéal et en exhumant certaines de ses formes plus anciennes. Chemin faisant, le lecteur découvre différents types et régimes de discours, philosophique, mais aussi théologique, spirituel, rhétorique, littéraire, esthétique. Romano esquisse ainsi une histoire de la philosophie occidentale aux contours bien différents de ceux qu'on lui prête généralement : à l'écart des grandes métaphysiques du moi et de la subjectivité, il emprunte les chemins de traverse d'une enquête sur les formes de vie et les modes d'existence. Samotność i tajemnica. Prolegomena do fenomenologii ludzkiej więzi (tłum. Marek Drwięga).

Ce travail tente de prendre la mesure de certaines des évolutions les plus significatives qui, sous le nom de "post-structuralisme", ont pu affecter la philosophie et la culture contemporaine dans son ensemble. On a choisi de privilégier des lectures suivies d'oeuvres de Deleuze, Derrida et Lyotard, qui servent de fil directeur tout au long de l'étude. L'accent est d'abord mis sur deux gestes caractéristiques, qui ont contribué à modifier, de façon décisive, à la fois le sens et le style des (...) démarches philosophiques ultérieures. D'une part, la mise à mal d'un certain style d'ambition fondatrice : il n'y a ici déplacement qu'à se situer dans un espace d'après la phénoménologie, point de départ d'une série de mouvements d'éloignements, parallèles quoique différenciés, par rapport aux exigences fondationnalistes, encore à l'horizon des recherches génétiques husserliennes ou post-husserliennes. D'autre part, un travail d'accompagnement critique du structuralisme ethno-linguistique : c'est l'occasion de repositionnements et de renouvellements féconds ; la voie est ainsi ouverte pour des développements philosophiques d'un type nouveau, à la fois résolument critiques et ouverts sur leur dehors. On se propose ici d'expliciter le sens et la portée de ces déplacements, dont rend notamment compte la récurrence thématique, dans la position des problèmes philosophiques contemporains de ces élaborations, du couple "genèse et structure". Cet essai propose de contribuer au développement d'une cosmologie phénoménologique, dans la voie ouverte par Fink, Patocka ou Renaud Barbaras. Au regard de cette approche, il faut combattre le naturalisme, car les choses (les phénomènes) ne sont pas des systèmes matériels réductibles en dernière instance à leurs constituants élémentaires. Mais face au subjectivisme, les phénomènes ne sont pas non plus assimilables à leur sens constitué dans la conscience. Celle-ci, comme toute chose, est située dans le monde, lequel seul fait apparaître (...) tout ce qui est. Apparaître signifie entrer en présence, accéder à l'individuation par un mouvement qui a pour fond producteur le monde lui-même, mouvement dont on soutient dans ce travail qu'il est une structure essentielle de l'apparaître, ou ce que Husserl aurait nommé un a priori matériel. Reste à comprendre comment la conscience peut accéder à de telles structures, si elle est elle-même limitée par la constitution finie des facultés anthropologiques qui médiatisent son ouverture. La cosmologie phénoménologique d'inspiration réaliste doit-elle réinvestir l'opposition kantienne entre choses en soi et phénomènes? Il faut surtout montrer comment la conscience, en dépit de sa finitude, a accès à l'absolu en tant qu'il se montre, et envisager ainsi la phénoménologie comme voie méthodologique vers une forme renouvelée de métaphysique. In At the Heart of Reason, Claude Romano boldly calls for a reformulation of the phenomenological project. He contends that the main concern of phenomenology, and its originality with respect to other philosophical movements of the last century, such as logical empiricism, the grammatical philosophy of Wittgenstein, and varieties of neo-Kantianism, was to provide a "new image of Reason." Against the common view, which restricts the range of reason to logic and truth-theory alone, Romano advocates "big-hearted rationality," including in (...) it what is only ostensibly its opposite, that is, sensibility, and locating in sensibility itself the roots of the categorical forms of thought. Contrary to what was claimed by the "linguistic turn," language is not a self-enclosed domain; it cannot be conceived in its specificity unless it is led back to its origin in the pre-predicative or pre-linguistic structures of experience itself. Sa réflexion s'ordonne autour de trois axes. Tout d'abord, la question des rapports entre langage et expérience, dans le sillage des recherches empiriques en linguistique : le langage n'exige-t-il pas, pour pouvoir être compris, que l'on interroge ses liens avec des significations pré-linguistiques qui fondent notre expérience même du monde? Ensuite, la question du (...) réalisme : la phénoménologie entretient-elle une affinité nécessaire avec l'idéalisme, comme l'ont cru un certain nombre de disciples de Husserl, ou ne nous met-elle pas plutôt sur la voie d'un réalisme qui demanderait à être reformulé? Enfin, comment une phénoménologie réaliste et soucieuse d'une articulation plus fine entre expérience et langage permet-elle d'approcher de manière renouvelée des phénomènes " classiques " comme le corps, les émotions ou l'habitude? L’accompagnement, le traitement, la prévention de la souffrance psychique, individuelle ou conjugale, nécessitent qu’un travail patient-thérapeute soit possible. Pour cela, s’appuyant sur la théorie analytique, l’auteur propose un « penser ensemble » qui nécessite un décalage entre la psyché du thérapeute, qui doit entendre le contenu latent de ce qui se dit, et la psyché du patient réexperimentant son passé à partir du récit qu’il en fait et des interprétations et constructions proposées. Trois cas cliniques étayent ce travail analytique commun.

Considérant le travail psychique auquel nous sommes contraints – depuis l’excitation à la satisfaction pulsionnelle, mise en mouvement sublimée, inhibée « ou non » quant au but, avec ou sans abandon à la jouissance –, l’auteur tente d’approcher des mouvements d’installation identitaire (fonction, rôle, sexe, génération) à l’aide d’appuis théoriques et cliniques à travers deux cas d’analyse.

This article examines whether and how the participation of women in the firm’s board of directors and senior management enhances financial performance. We use the Fama and French (1992, 1993) valuation framework to take the level of risk into consideration, when comparing firm performances, whereas previous studies used either raw stock returns or accounting ratios. Our results indicate that firms operating in complex environments do generate positive and significant abnormal returns when they have a high proportion of women officers. Although (...) the participation of women as directors does not seem to make a difference in this regard, firms with a high proportion of women in both their management and governance systems generate enough value to keep up with normal stock-market returns. These findings tend to support the policies currently being discussed or implemented in some countries and organizations to foster the advancement of women in business. (shrink)

As well as the means of prevention, a broad spectrum of reflection and consideration is also devoted to past evil in the form of remembering, guilt and remorse. As responses (...) to evil, reprimand and punishment are two-edged weapons. Corrective measures are considered, such as moderate and constructive egoism, rather than "solutions" to eliminate evil.". Rights are not redundant elements of a plausible utilitarian theory and the right to life is an inseparable companion of the rights to nourishment and to medical care. The deeper reason for this thesis is the interdependence of values concerning vitality. In this perspective it is inconsistent to say that the (normal) newborn is unable to have a right to life, but has a right to be fed. The hidden premise of Singer’s rebuttal of involuntary euthanasia is a theory of (...) rights as vetoes against imposed benefits. Without openly subscribing to such a theory there is no answer to ‘logical slippery slope’ arguments and no protection against dangerous ‘quality of life’ considerations as a basis of decisions over life and death. Infinite regress arguments are part of a philosopher's tool kit of argumentation. But how sharp or strong is this tool? How effectively is it used? The typical presentation of infinite regress arguments throughout history is so succinct and has so many gaps that it is often unclear how an infinite regress is derived, and why an infinite regress is logically problematic, and as a result, it is often difficult to evaluate infinite regress arguments. These consequences of our customary way of (...) using this tool indicate that there is a need for a theory to re-orient our practice. My general approach to contribute to such a theory, consists of collecting and evaluating as many infinite regress arguments as possible, comparing and contrasting many of the formal and non-formal properties, looking for recurring patterns, and identifying the properties that appeared essential to those patterns. Two very general questions guided this work: How are infinite regresses generated in infinite regress arguments? How do infinite regresses logically function as premises in an argument? In answering these questions I clarify the notion of an infinite regress; identify different logical forms of infinite regresses; describe different kinds of infinite regress arguments; distinguish the rhetoric from the logic in infinite regress arguments; and suggest ways of improving our discussion and our practice of constructing and evaluating these arguments. In the latest years of the 6th/12th century, two chains of affiliation of a distinctive kind make their appearance in the Muslim world, in the East on one hand, and in the West on the other: the first is referred to in the sources as silsilat al-muṣāfaḥa, the second as silsilat al-mushābaka. These ‘chains’, mentioned mostly in works pertaining to the genre of prosopographic literature in the largest sense, experienced a broad and rapid expansion throughout the dār al-islām. They are (...) linked to a specific ritual aimed at perpetuating, across generations, a physical contact with the Prophet.
