El segundo y tercer poemario (The Fat Black Woman’s Poems [1984] y Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Woman [1989], respectivamente) de Grace Nichols, autora guyanesa residente en el Reino Unido desde 1977, se encuentran hermanados por el uso del humor. Criticada por valerse de este recurso, visto como un exceso de liviandad para tratar temas complejos como el pasado de esclavitud, la dura vida del inmigrante caribeño o la sexualidad femenina, Nichols revindica su utilización en tanto implica su adscripción a (...) la tradición antillana. En el presente trabajo, mediante el análisis de cuatro poemas (dos de cada libro), se explora cómo opera el humor en ambas obras y qué simplificaciones conlleva, poniendo especial énfasis en cómo la aparente liviandad que aporta es, en tanto tradición caribeña, otro modo de resistencia. Madness, Language, Literature (2019) brings together a series of unpublished works on literature that belong to Michel Foucault’s first stage of production. This article focuses on those works that express a concept of madness as social partition or outside, and also on those that elucidate the concept of the ‘extralinguistic’ of literature. The combined reading of these texts sheds light on a concept of the extralinguistic outside of literature that enables Foucault to overcome a concept of ontological outside and, therefore, (...) using literature, think on this discourse’s historical possibilities of resistance. As a result of this new reading, I analyse some fundamental aspects of this early Foucault. First, his development of a politics of literary form in the 1960s. Second, I propose that Foucault’s studies on literature in the 1960s were a kind of laboratory in which he was already raising some questions concerning his political history of truth. And, lastly, I examine the capacity of literature to make visible a part of reality that remains hidden (the excluded), the processes by which literature creates (language’s mechanism of self-representation), the possible forms of subjectivation that the fiction of every episteme allows (what Foucault calls verisimilitude), and the formulation of novel forms of being (that he later developed as aesthetics of existence). This article posits that in Foucault’s later work we find not a forgetting of literature, but a reformulation of the role that literature had come to occupy in his work, and that, in this later work, there is a trace of the texts on literary thought that he wrote from the 1960s to the mid-1970s. Drawing upon Foucault’s later work, I reconsider the key question: What relationship does literature, as literature, have with the political dimension of discourses? El fin de esta investigación teórica es analizar y explicar la contribución de las relaciones públicas en el diálogo intercultural dentro de las organizaciones sociales. Para ello, se recurrió a investigar los conflictos sociales ocurridos durante el año 2020; así como a describir de qué manera la utilización de las herramientas comunicativas, en particular la del diálogo intercultural, puede fomentar la comprensión y empatía frente a las diferentes problemáticas sociales. La gestión comunicativa que debe llevar a cabo un profesional de (...) relaciones públicas mediante una comunicación eficaz ha de tener como fin la comprensión mutua entre gobierno y ciudadanos, enfatizando la participación activa de la comunidad y el valor que representa el debate continuo entre los ciudadanos y sus instituciones. Para los profesionales de relaciones públicas constituye un desafío llevar a cabo una comunicación intercultural con el propósito de resolver los graves problemas de diálogo y falta de entendimiento, reconociendo así la importancia de mantener una comunicación organizacional estratégica, en donde los mensajes sean bidireccionales, generando de ese modo una mayor interacción y, sobre todo, la resolución de los conflictos sociales. In the past decades, with the decline of the Grand Narratives and the subsequent need for new historical and political orientation, literary studies have been reflecting on the role of literature in the world. Together with Jacques Rancière—and in dialogue with Althusser, Foucault, or Fischer-Lichte—the present volume analyzes this political turn of literary studies.

Parecidos razonables. Relaciones entre literatura y filosofía para el siglo XXI atiende a la transformación de las relaciones entre literatura y filosofía desde mediados del siglo XX hasta la actualidad. Este libro cubre perspectivas teóricas y filosóficas relevantes (teoría de las emociones, el concepto de extrañamiento, política de la literatura, filosofía del lenguaje, feminismo, marxismo, giro espacial, nuevos materialismos), al tiempo que ofrece ejemplos de aplicación a un corpus de textos literarios concreto. Esto es, este volumen combina rigor teórico, un (...) panorama actual de las relaciones entre filosofía y literatura, y una aplicación de dichas teorías a la lectura crítica de obras literarias. According to a growing body of studies, people’s ability to forecast future emotional experiences is generally biased. Nonetheless, the existing literature has mainly explored affective forecasting in relation to specific events, whereas little is still known about the ability to make general estimations of future emotional states. Based on existing evidence suggesting future-oriented disposition as a key factor for mental health, the aims of the current study were (1) to investigate the relationship between negative (NA) and positive (PA) affective forecasting (...) biases and perceived psychological well-being, and (2) to explore whether positively biased predictions are associated with resilience and foster one’s skills to cope with stressful events. To do so, we asked 85 undergraduate students to forecast PA and NA over two weeks, as well as to report their daily affect through a web-based Ecological Momentary Assessment. According to the results, positively biased PA forecasting (i.e., overestimating positive emotional states) was associated with greater perceived psychological well-being and higher resilience. When high levels of stress were experienced, participants holding an optimistic, yet biased, estimation of future PA were more likely to successfully manage stressors, thus maintaining lower levels of NA and higher levels of positive emotions. We suggest that positively biased PA forecasting is an adaptive cognitive distortion that boosts people’s resilience and mental health, thus opening new avenues for the promotion of psychological well-being. This study proposes a revised interpretation of Foucault’s views on literature. It has been argued that the philosopher’s interest in literature was limited to the 1960s and of a mostly depoliticized nature. However, Foucault’s previously unpublished later works suggest a different reality, showing a sustained interest in literature and its politics. In the light of this new material, the book repositions Foucault's ideas within recent debates on the politics of literature.

A finales de septiembre de 2019, se publica Folie, langage, littèrature que se suma a la anterior colección de textos inéditos de Foucault en torno a la literatura que en 2013 aparecía bajo el título de La gran extranjera. Este nuevo volumen presenta textos inéditos donde los editores, nos dice Judith Revel, han seleccionado textos que vienen a incomodar la lectura canónica del Foucault interesado por la literatura. Y, efectivamente, la selección es especialmente interesante para los estudiosos de su obra (...) porque sitúa su ruptura con un concepto escapista de la literatura en torno a 1967. Particularmente llamativo es el texto «L’extralinguistique et la littérature», donde Foucault propone un análisis de los distintos modos en que lo extralingüístico, como afuera de la obra, se relaciona con ella y viceversa. A partir de esta propuesta, nuestro objetivo es analizar una política de la forma literaria que en Foucault se propone desde una materialidad negativa, a la vez que performativa. (shrink)

An experimental breast-feeding education programme conducted at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila demonstrated that women could be motivated to improve their breast-feeding practices and lengthen their period of lactational amenorrhoea in comparison to a control group. Mothers who participated in the programme breast-fed their babies more frequently, delayed the introduction of regular supplements, used fewer bottles and pacifiers and maintained night feeding longer than mothers who were not exposed to the positive breast-feeding messages. The programme was successful in lengthening (...) the period of amenorrhoea among women with elementary, high school, or technical school education, but not among college-educated women. Different educational approaches may be necessary for women of different education levels. (shrink)
