In "De l’Allemagne", Mme de Staël develops a sophisticated philosophical psychology that centers not on reason, but imagination. She does this by bringing French Enlightenment philosophy, particularly Rousseau and Diderot, into dialogue with German thinkers, including Kant and Herder. For Mme de Staël, imagination transcends the epistemic limits of sensibility and reason by incorporating sentiment.

Withdrawal involves emotional pain that motivates much addictive behavior. In this paper, I argue that the emotional pain of withdrawal compels much addictive behavior. Researchers have noticed this possibility but it is widely underappreciated. Among philosophers, only Hanna Pickard has discussed emotional compulsion in addiction, and the emotional aspect of withdrawal has been almost completely neglected. Accounts of emotional compulsion in the philosophical literature (from Tappolet, Elster, and Furrow) probably do not capture how the distress of withdrawal compels, so I (...) propose a more suitable account of “pathodoxastic” compulsion in addiction. On this account, the emotional pain of withdrawal compels when it undermines the ability to believe that one can continue to endure it, and therefore the ability to intend abstinence. (shrink)

This book examines responsibility and luck as these issues arise in tort law, criminal law, and distributive justice. The central question is: whose bad luck is a particular piece of misfortune? Arthur Ripstein argues that there is a general set of principles to be found that clarifies responsibility in those cases where luck is most obviously an issue: accidents, mistakes, emergencies, and failed attempts at crime. In revealing how the problems that arise in tort and criminal law as well (...) as distributive justice invite structurally parallel solutions, the author also shows the deep connection between individual responsibility and social equality. Is addiction a behavioral pattern, or the underlying cause of a behavioral pattern? Both views are found in prominent accounts of addiction, but theorists generally do not notice that they are taking a controversial position, let alone justify it. A third possibility is that addiction consists in both addictive behavior and its causes, though this view is less obviously present in the literature. I argue that two important considerations favor the "cause view" over the "behavior" and "hybrid" views. The first (...) is that we want to be able to explain addictive behavior with reference to addiction. The second is that addiction seems to persist long after addictive behavior has ceased. The weather can be very cold at Dachau concentration camp, but Dachau was apparently not cold enough for some Nazi purposes. A camp doctor named Rascher wrote to Heinrich Himmler in February 1943, asking to be transferred to Auschwitz to continue his experiments—which involved freezing live prisoners. The letter reads: “Auschwitz is more suitable [than Dachau] as it is colder there and the camp itself is much larger, thereby attracting less attention to the test persons, who tend to scream while (...) freezing.”. THE rapprochement of existential and Marxist philosophy has received a good deal of attention since Sartre published in 1960 his Critique de la raison dialectique. Its introduction, Question de méthode, has been translated into English by Hazel Barnes. At least two major explications of the work have appeared in the last two years. Extensive reviews have appeared in philosophical journals in this country and abroad. Finally, at least one critical study devoted explicitly to the problems such a marriage entails was (...) published last year in paperback format. Another publication which brings together a collection of essays and excerpts is titled Existentialism Versus Marxism and has already decided the future of the marriage by its sub-title: "Conflicting Views on Humanism.". We now know the structures of over 200 proteins to atomic resolution. Despite the impressive extent and quality of the results, crystal‐structure analysis has often been thought of as limited in scope, not only in its restriction to samples that can be crystallized, but in the more important respect that taking ‘snapshots’ of proteins does not directly address the complex spatio‐temporal organization of the processes in which proteins participate. It is suggested here that, as the field has matured, this second (...) limitation is gradually being overcome. As we gain increased access to structures of proteins in different conformational states – for example, in conformations produced by different states of ligation – and to families of homologous proteins, we can proceed from the statics of protein structure to the dynamics of conformational change, function, and evolution.A new scientific speciality has grown up around the solved structures: it has as its goal the elucidation of general principles of protein structure and function, to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the properties of proteins revealed by experiment. In this article we shall discuss some of the activity in this field. It will emerge clearly, I believe, that the increasing number and variety of solved structures is exerting a cumulative force. General principles are emerging from comparisons of related proteins and contrasts of dissimilar ones: the whole corpus of data is greater than the sum of the parts. (shrink)

The repudiation of propositions as “obscure entities” which is prevalent among logicians and philosophers of “nominalistic” persuasion, is frequently justified by pointing out that no agreement seems ever to have been reached about the identity-condition of propositions. And if we cannot specify, so they argue, under what conditions two sentences express the same proposition, then we use the word “proposition” without any clear meaning. Quine, for example, feels far less uneasy about quantification over class-variables than about quantification over attribute-variables and (...) propositional variables, because there is a clear criterion for deciding whether we are dealing with two classes or with only one class referred to by different predicates: two classes are identical if they have the same membership.
