Requesting an Autopsy of the Dead Donor Rule: Improving, Not Abandoning, the Guiding Rule in Organ Donation.Tamar Schiff & Arthur Caplan - 2024 - American Journal of Bioethics 24 (6):48-50.
Use of normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) for organ recovery in donation after circulatory death (DCD) raises two crucial, and intertwined, ethical questions. The first is whether the use of NRP...

Über die vierfache Wurzel des Satzes vom zureichenden Grunde.Arthur Schopenhauer & Christian Martin Julius Frauenstädt - 1970 - Hamburg,: Meiner. Edited by Michael Landmann & Elfriede Tielsch.
11. Mme de Staël's Philosophy of Imagination.Arthur Krieger - 2023 - Cahiers Staëliens 73:77-100.
In "De l’Allemagne", Mme de Staël develops a sophisticated philosophical psychology that centers not on reason, but imagination. She does this by bringing French Enlightenment philosophy, particularly Rousseau and Diderot, into dialogue with German thinkers, including Kant and Herder. For Mme de Staël, imagination transcends the epistemic limits of sensibility and reason by incorporating sentiment.

Torturous withdrawal: Emotional compulsion in addiction.Arthur Krieger - 2024 - European Journal of Philosophy:1-17.
Withdrawal involves emotional pain that motivates much addictive behavior. In this paper, I argue that the emotional pain of withdrawal compels much addictive behavior. Researchers have noticed this possibility but it is widely underappreciated. Among philosophers, only Hanna Pickard has discussed emotional compulsion in addiction, and the emotional aspect of withdrawal has been almost completely neglected. Accounts of emotional compulsion in the philosophical literature (from Tappolet, Elster, and Furrow) probably do not capture how the distress of withdrawal compels, so I (...)

  14. Equality, Responsibility, and the Law.Arthur Ripstein - 1998 - Cambridge University Press.
This book examines responsibility and luck as these issues arise in tort law, criminal law, and distributive justice. The central question is: whose bad luck is a particular piece of misfortune? Arthur Ripstein argues that there is a general set of principles to be found that clarifies responsibility in those cases where luck is most obviously an issue: accidents, mistakes, emergencies, and failed attempts at crime. In revealing how the problems that arise in tort and criminal law as well (...)

Über die Grundlage der Moral.Arthur Schopenhauer - 2007 - Hamburg: Meiner. Edited by Peter Welsen.

Does Addiction Cause Addictive Behavior?Arthur Krieger - 2024 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 31 (1):79-88.
Is addiction a behavioral pattern, or the underlying cause of a behavioral pattern? Both views are found in prominent accounts of addiction, but theorists generally do not notice that they are taking a controversial position, let alone justify it. A third possibility is that addiction consists in both addictive behavior and its causes, though this view is less obviously present in the literature. I argue that two important considerations favor the "cause view" over the "behavior" and "hybrid" views. The first (...)

    On Using Nazi Data: The Case Against.Arthur Schafer - 1986 - Dialogue 25 (3):413-.
The weather can be very cold at Dachau concentration camp, but Dachau was apparently not cold enough for some Nazi purposes. A camp doctor named Rascher wrote to Heinrich Himmler in February 1943, asking to be transferred to Auschwitz to continue his experiments—which involved freezing live prisoners. The letter reads: “Auschwitz is more suitable [than Dachau] as it is colder there and the camp itself is much larger, thereby attracting less attention to the test persons, who tend to scream while (...)

    Marxist Existentialism.Arthur Lessing - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (3):461 - 482.
THE rapprochement of existential and Marxist philosophy has received a good deal of attention since Sartre published in 1960 his Critique de la raison dialectique. Its introduction, Question de méthode, has been translated into English by Hazel Barnes. At least two major explications of the work have appeared in the last two years. Extensive reviews have appeared in philosophical journals in this country and abroad. Finally, at least one critical study devoted explicitly to the problems such a marriage entails was (...)

The analysis of protein structures: New insights from a growing data base.Arthur M. Lesk - 1984 - Bioessays 1 (3):105-110.
We now know the structures of over 200 proteins to atomic resolution. Despite the impressive extent and quality of the results, crystal‐structure analysis has often been thought of as limited in scope, not only in its restriction to samples that can be crystallized, but in the more important respect that taking ‘snapshots’ of proteins does not directly address the complex spatio‐temporal organization of the processes in which proteins participate. It is suggested here that, as the field has matured, this second (...)

    Belief and propositions.Arthur Pap - 1957 - Philosophy of Science 24 (2):123-136.
The repudiation of propositions as “obscure entities” which is prevalent among logicians and philosophers of “nominalistic” persuasion, is frequently justified by pointing out that no agreement seems ever to have been reached about the identity-condition of propositions. And if we cannot specify, so they argue, under what conditions two sentences express the same proposition, then we use the word “proposition” without any clear meaning. Quine, for example, feels far less uneasy about quantification over class-variables than about quantification over attribute-variables and (...)
