The rapid development of programs based on the principles of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) signals significant changes in the components of education, namely in the provider, the tool of transmission, and the recipient of knowledge. Historical data analysis regarding the key functions of education serves as the basis for identifying fundamental innovations introduced through AI and ML. The impact of writing, printing, and the Internet has significantly altered the tool for knowledge transmission, influencing the volume of information (...) and the number of knowledge recipients. The implementation of AI and ML transforms not only the tool but also the provider of knowledge itself, which can become impersonal thanks to the corresponding computer programs. With the historically justified increase in the volume of knowledge possessed by humanity, there is a transformation observed in education systems. This is especially true for democratic societies, where the emphasis is increasingly shifting from providing a large amount of knowledge to developing critical thinking. It has been researched that programs based on AI and ML, applying linguistic models, are capable of effectively systematizing knowledge. This lays the foundation for personalizing the entire education process for a specific knowledge recipient, without burdening the provider. However, there have been cases when such imitation misleads scientists, who perceive it as attempts at communication between programs that have an equivalence to the human level. The conclusions drawn indicate a significant transformation of the education system caused by AI and ML-based programs. However, intelligent programs are unable to evolve into independent knowledge recipients due to their inability to consciously attribute meaning to information, transforming it into knowledge. This paper introduces a Special Issue of Topoi entitled "Archaeology and philosophy".

In this article I offer a defence of the use of deceptive placebos—inert treatments like sugar pills or saline injections—in clinical practice. In particular, I will defend what I call the ideal placebo case—where a doctor or nurse has good reason to believe that a deceptive placebo offers a patient’s best, or only, chance of some therapeutic benefit. Taking a Kantian approach to the question of clinical placebo use, I examine the Kantian prohibition on deception as interference with the will (...) of a rational agent, and argue that deception to promote the placebo effect can be carried out in a way that does not interfere with the patient’s will in the way prohibited by Kant. The deception involved in a placebo treatment is not carried out to interfere with or obstruct the function of the will, but merely to make possible a means to the patient’s ends that that would otherwise be unavailable. I will therefore argue that deception carried out in order to promote a therapeutic placebo effect can be done in a way that is consistent with respect for a patient’s autonomy, and may be a rare case of deception that is compatible with a Kantian ethical approach. Andrea Kern has criticized the view that the fallibility of judgements is due to their objectivity and has tried to show that objective knowledge is comprehensible only if its infallibility is not logically excluded. She argues that the notion of knowledge is more fundamental than that of error and that we must bring into play an epistemic capacity as a form of perfection to understand what knowledge is. In the present article, this position is charitably criticized and modified. It is (...) argued that infallible knowledge is even actual, but not fully objective. Infallibility characterises our knowledge of logical and of spatio–temporal form and our judgments of the kind "it seems to me that p". This knowledge is in neither case knowledge of particular objective facts, but in both cases knowledge of what Sebastian Rödl calls the object überhaupt. (shrink)

We have drawn on the inspiration of Sartre, the Dalai Lama, Tao Ti Ching, Heidegger and Mahayana Buddhism to find five reasons why the Polo Mint's inner emptiness, with its sweet minty after taste, can lead to contemplations of the ultimate truth.

Moral transformation is the process by which a person grows in holiness. The grace of the Holy Spirit enables this growth. This article explores how the notion of ‘prudence of the Spirit’ in Aquinas’s commentary on Romans can help to further elaborate the concept of moral transformation. It does so by first presenting this transformation as a human process. Second, the article presents an in-depth interpretation of Aquinas’s commentary on Romans 8:14: ‘those who are led by the Spirit of God (...) are children of God’. Here, special attention will be given to the proper character of the prudence the Holy Spirit forms in believers. The concluding discussion draws lessons from our reading of the commentary and related texts. This reinforces the conviction that grace enables freedom and will help us to find proper metaphors for speaking of the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. (shrink)

The purpose is to complement the preface of this special issue, and so give a better context for the issue, by providing a somewhat broader introduction. History of knowledge is here specifically related to history of science (...) and history of ideas. In the first half of the text, we present the emergence of the field and some of its key concepts and perspectives, as well as some critique it has faced. In the second half, we discuss and compare history of knowledge with the institutionalised disciplines of history of ideas in Scandinavia. We see some clear overlaps and similarities between history of ideas and history of knowledge, but also differences. For instance, historians of ideas study traditions of thought, which not necessarily count as knowledge. One point we see with history of knowledge as a field is how it works as an interdisciplinary and integrative meeting point, where historical researchers from different disciplines can gather to discuss the appearance and social function of knowledge, and by doing this have the possibility of also generating new perspectives on cultural and societal history. The philosophy of cognitive paleoanthropology involves three related tasks: (1) asking what inferences might be drawn from the paleontological and archaeological records to past cognition, behavior and culture; (2) constructing synthetic accounts of the evolution of distinctive hominin capacities; (3) exploring how results from cognitive paleoanthropology might inform philosophy. We introduce some distinctive cognitive paleoanthropological inferences and discuss their epistemic standing, before considering how attention to the material records and the practice of paleoanthropology can inform and transform philosophical approaches.

Sin embargo, asumiendo su propia sentencia «Mi destino es la lengua castellana, el bronce de Francisco de Quevedo», rastrearemos las huellas indelebles que dejó la literatura española (...) del Barroco y de los Siglos de Oro en la obra del escritor argentino, y cómo los símbolos del siglo XVII son recuperados desde la literatura reconstructivista de Borges para continuar con una tradición y al mismo tiempo transformar su significado. 'New nature' refers to the current practice in which ten thousands of hectares of superfluous agricultural lands are 'given back to nature', compensating for the loss of 'old nature' in other parts of the Netherlands. Around the issue of 'new nature' two discourses have emerged. In each discourse different environmental values are emphasised: about what nature is or could be; about the relationship between nature, agriculture and development; about ecological mitigation, and so on. Whereas the Dutch branch of WWF is (...) the most active promoter of the sectorial nature development discourse, environmental groups like Friends of the Earth try to weigh these sectorial interests against the background of increasing environmental degradation. The goal of this paper is to explain the evolution of life through the evolution of cellular and supra-cellular closures, two distinct ways of strict delimitation against the surroundings. Such closures are a necessary precondition of organisation, semiosis, and agency. We argue that in addition to the basic, first-order, cellular closures, which have been in existence without interruption since the dawn of life, there also exist second-order closures (cell communities), which are dynamic and often formed ad hoc. Moreover, a living (...) entity may belong simultaneously to different kinds of such second-order closures. It is these second-order closures which organise cellular (and higher-order) communities and form the core of the bonds that hold the biosphere together. In second-order closures, there exist countless crisscrossing pathways leading to manifold interpretations of particular situations. We provide examples of such relationships and point to an elaborate network connecting all denizens of the biosphere. (shrink)

Por tanto, se trata de un antecedente de Santa Teresa de Ávila en el uso de este símbolo.

Ibn Arabi y Swedenborg son dos pensadores ideales del movimiento que llamamos ''filosofía figurativa'', es decir. un pensamiento que se caracteriza por una sistematización de la realidad utilizando figuras, imágenes e ilustraciones, en lugar de utilizar conceptos. Eso significa implícitamente una experiencia del mundo y de Dios determinada por las observaciones personales y el pluralismo ontológico. Por lo tanto, Ibn Arabi y Swedenborg son vistos como representantes de una espiritualidad alejada del principio de incertidumbre y del absoluto único.

El presente estudio establece cómo los elementos iranios que estructuraban la realidad: el ganado, la tierra, el fuego, los metales, el agua, la vegetación y el hombre, trascendidos a realidades espirituales mediadoras entre la divinidad y la humanidad, son asumidos en la tradición bíblica desde el Antiguo Testamento hasta el libro del Apocalisis como personalidades angélicas. Como realidades que motivan la experiencia de lo sagrado perdura este fondo espiritual en pensadores próximos en el tiempo como Rilke, Flechner, D’Ors, Petersen, o (...) Corbin. (shrink)

En "El libro de los sueños" de Emmanuel Swedenborg podemos encontrar dos tipos de experiencia religiosa: una, que se denomina "yóguica" o "chamante", y otra, específicamente chnstiana, que debe considerarse también como mística. Swedenborg ofrece en su libro una serie de visiones e imágenes que dan pie a un análisis contrastivo de la mística.

La ciudad de Jerusalén se convierte en una determinación de los símbolos axiales y de construcción. A partir de Isaías 54, 14-17, el símbolo se transforma de tal manera que va desplegando nuevos significados. La literatura apocalíptica es un caso ejemplar. Se puede decir que el símbolo de la Jerusalén celestre o nueva Jerusalén encuentra en Emanuel Swedenborg una presencia que continúa todos sus sentidos.
