L'anthropologie récente et le développement de la primatologie convergent pour abolir la frontière moderne entre nature et culture. Les réticences ne manquent pas cependant. L'histoire des sciences a montré les comparaisons abusives entre les primates d'une part et les primitifs, les enfants et les civilisations préhistoriques d'autre part. Il n'est pas facile d'accepter l'animalité de l'homme moderne sans s'approcher de la barbarie. Un demi-siècle après le Singe nu, cette animalité se résume souvent à la biologie. Cet Essai post-animal s'intéresse (...) au contraire à ce qu'il y a de plus éloigné du biologique : l'art et la spiritualité. C'est un livre dense, volontiers ironique et qui se débarrasse d'idées trop faciles à répéter : l'exception humaine et la double nature de l'humanité. S'inspirant de sources aussi variées qu'érudites, ce livre démontre au contraire que le goût du beau et de l'abstrait s'inscrit dans une continuité évolutionnaire, sans réductionnisme. (shrink)

In der synthetischen Biologie werden Methoden insbesondere der Molekularbiologie, der Ingenieurwissenschaften und der Informationstechnik miteinander verbunden. Ziel dieser Kooperation ist die Erzeugung von biologischen Konstrukten, die weder eindeutig der Kategorie eines naturlich gewachsenen Organismus noch der einer technisch geschaffenen Maschine zuzuordnen sind. Die synthetische Biologie wirft damit ethische und naturphilosophische Fragen auf und stellt zudem neue Anforderungen an die bisherigen rechtlichen Regelungen.

La théorie des jeux évolutionnaires s'oppose à la théorie des jeux classique en ce qu 'elle élimine les raisonnements des joueurs. Peut-elle dépasser les apories de la théorie classique ? Mais en reconsidérant le raisonnement classique d'induction rétrograde, en y introduisant des possibilités de révision, on évite son aspect paradoxal. L'intérêt de la théorie des jeux évolutionnaires est donc surtout de simuler l'évolution d'interactions dans des populations.Evolutionary game theory does not take into account reasoning players, in contrast with classical game (...) theory. Can it overcome some drawbacks of classical theory ? If we reconsider the backward induction reasoning, and if introduce the possibility of revising, paradoxes and drawbacks disappear. Cet article vise à analyser les racines biologiques et psychopathologiques de l’antisémitisme. Il privilégie la notion de dialectique afin de comprendre la transition de l’anti-judaïsme à l’antisémitisme comme passage d’une opposition d’essence spirituelle et religieuse à un rejet d’ordre national et racial. Historiquement, ce passage est contemporain de l’émergence de la biologie de la race qui a, entre autres, cristallisé les thèmes majeurs d’une tradition mythique, ayant, pendant des siècles, structuré l’identité occidentale. L’antisémitisme proprement dit, dont le terme n’apparaît (...) qu’en 1873, a transformé une opposition dialectique à l’altérité juive en ce qu’Adorno a appelé la « dialectique négative », visant à résoudre définitivement la « question Juive » par la suppression de son objet. A travers une analyse historicoconceptuelle, cet article suggère une nouvelle approche de la genèse du racisme et de l’antisémitisme nazi, d’une part, et des rapports entre la science et l’éthique, d’autre part. In contemporary moral philosophy, philosophers turn to biological research of primatology. Their interest in this biological discipline is based on the assumption that insights from primatology may help explaining morality. This paper goes further into the question of how an explanation of the genesis of our morality may rest on considerations about a psychological altruism among primates. For that, in addition to the recent considerations of Philip Kitcher (1), it proves to be fruitful to refer to David Hume's explication of (...) the genesis of morality (2). In the last section of this paper (3), we can then turn to the question of whether, and if so how, these considerations about the genesis of our morality might bear insights into the validity of moral judgements. German Moralphilosophen setzen sich in jüngster Zeit verstärkt mit der Biologie, und zwar mit Primatologen und deren Forschungen auseinander. Dem liegt die Annahme zugrunde, daß die in der Primatologie gewonnenen Einsichten helfen, moralische Phänomene zu erklären. Dieser Beitrag geht der Frage nach, inwiefern eine Erklärung der Genese unserer Moral von einem psycholo gischen Altruismus unter Primaten ausgehen kann. Hier erweist es sich als hilfreich, zusätzlich zu den zeitgenössischen Überlegungen Philip Kitchers (1) auf David Humes Erklärung der Genese unserer Moral zurückzukommen (2). Im letzten Abschnitt dieses Beitrags (3) geht es dann um die Frage, was sich aus diesen Überlegungen zur Genese unserer Moral für deren Geltung ergibt. (shrink)

Die sich um 1800 neu konstituierende Disziplin der Biologie und die idealistische Naturphilosophie Schellings bemuhen sich in ihrer Frontstellung gegen einen unkritisch und ontologisch verstandenen Mechanismus um eine dem Leben angemessene Beschreibung und Erklarung der Lebensphanomene. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird im ersten Teil der vorliegenden Studie das Werk des Naturforschers Carl Friedrich Kielmeyer im Kontext der zeitgenossischen philosophischen und naturforschenden Diskussionen verortet, bevor im zweiten Teil die Bedeutung von Kielmeyers Phanomenologie des Organischen fur die systematische Ausarbeitung des Schelling'schen Systems (...) der Naturphilosophie aufgezeigt wird. In their animosity towards an uncritical and ontology-based mechanism, both the new discipline of biology, which was becoming established around 1800, and Schellings idealistic natural philosophy strove for a description and explanation of the phenomena of life which were pertinent to life. Against this backdrop, the work of the naturalist Carl Friedrich Kielmeyer is placed in the context of contemporary philosophical and naturalist discussions of the time in the first part of this study before the significance of Kielmeyers phenomenology of the organic for the systematic development of Schellings system of natural philosophy is shown in the second part. RésuméLa démarche biologique est épaulée par des sciences supports comme la physique ct la chimie. Elles ont largement contribué a la rendre plus systématiquement quantitative. Récemment, des sciences annexes, derectement dérivées de ces sciences auxiliaires – comme la biophysique et la biochimie – ont largement contribuéàľacquisition de faits nouveaux et à la mise en place ?on;explications originales. Dans la connaissance de la matière vivante , la complémentarité de ces disciplines ?on;étude est évidente mais, de par les caractéristiques mêmes des méthodes (...) impliquées, des discordances dans les données expérimentales et dans les interprétations demeurent inévitables. Plus que jamais, les resultats obtenus doivent done être soumis à une discussion critique portant sur les limites qu'imposent tout à la fois àľexpérimentation, les techniques ?on;analyse et la nature même de ľobjet étudié. Et il n'est pas toujours possible de juger dans quelle mesure ces frontières méthodologiques ne sont pas, en fait, dépassées …la représentation trouvée du sujet étant peu conformc à sa réalité propre. En tentant de dominer toujours mieux sa technologie – respectant le plus possible ľaspect in vivo de ľanalyse – en nuançant davantage les théories suggérées, la biologie ?on;aujourd'hui est placee devant de nouvelles options technologiques decisives.SummaryBiological method is backed up by the support sciences such as physics and chemistry… These have largely contributed to render biology more systematically quantitative. More recently, related sciences derived directly from these support sciences, such as biophysics and biochemistry, have provided a stimulus to the acquisition of new facts and the working out of original explanations. In the domain of knowledge about living material the complementarity of these study disciplines is obvious, but in view of the nature of the methods involved, inconsistencies in the experimental data and their interpretation remain inevitable. Henceforth, results and hypotheses have to be considered in the view of the limitations both due to the techniques employed and the nature itself of the specific object of experimentation. And it is not always easy to be sure that these “methodological frontiers” have been respected… the representations suggested for the tested object being quite different from the reality. By overcoming these obstacles and in drawing out the theories suggest by experiments having more and more an “in vivo aspect”, biology is today at the forefront of new, decisive technological alternatives.ZusammenfassungDie Verfahren der Biologie werden durch Hilfswissenschaften wie die Physik und die Chemie gestützt, die weitgehend dazu beigetragen haben, diese systematischer quantifizierbar zu machen. In neuester Zeit haben zusätzliche, unmittelbar von diesen Hilfswissenschaften abgeleitete Wis‐senschaften wie die Biophysik und die Biochemie zur Erwerbung neuer Tatsachen und zur Schaffung von originellen Erklärungen beigetragen. Fur die Erkenntnis der lebendigen Materie ist die Komplementaritaut dieser Disziplinen offensichtlich, aber wegen der charakteristischen Zuuge der involvierten Methoden bleiben unvermeidbare Diskrepanzen zwi‐schen den experimentellen Daten und den Interpretationen zurück. Mehr denn je müssen deshalb die erhaltenen Ergebnisse einer kritischen Diskussion unterzogen werden, die die Grenzen betrifft, welche das Experimentieren, die Techniken der Analyse und die Natur der Gegenstände selbst uns setzen. Es ist nicht immer möglich zu beurteilen, in welchem Masse diese methodolo‐gischen Grenzen in der Tat nicht schon überschritten worden sind…, indem die vom Subjekt gefundene Darstellung nicht mit der Wirklichkeit als solcher übereinstimmt. Dadurch dass er versucht, seine Technologie immer besser zu beherrschen, den in vivo Aspekt seiner Analyse soweit wie möglich zu berücksichtigen und die naheliegenden Theorien immer mehr zu nuancieren, wird der zeitgenössische Biologe vor entscheidende technologische Optionen gestellt. Der Entwurf einer Biologie ist eine der erstaunlichsten Leistungen des Aristoteles. Offensichtlich ist er Teil eines umfassenden Konzepts, die gesamte Natur in ihrer Vielfalt und allen ihren Details zu erforschen und ihre Strukturen zu erklären. Wenn innerhalb dieses Entwurfs, der alle Bereiche am Himmel und auf Erden umfasst und etwa 50 % der erhaltenen Texte des Aristoteles ausmacht, die zoologischen allein ein Drittel einnehmen – eine kleinere botanische Schrift über die Pflanzen ist nicht erhalten ; in umfassender Weise bearbeitete (...) die Botanik Aristoteles’ Schüler Theophrast –, so hängt dies damit zusammen, dass in diesem Sektor der Natur durch Beobachtungen, Sektionen und Ursachenforschung die größten Ergebnisse zu erzielen waren. Bezogen auf das Gesamtkonzept hat also die Biologie bzw. die für Aristoteles im Vordergrund stehende Zoologie eine Pilotfunktion, die sie mit Einschränkungen auch in der Entwicklung der modernen Naturwissenschaft beibehalten hat. The autonomy of biology is a consequence of the directedness governing vital processes. This directedness is not complete purposiveness, but only the coordination of the processes toward a definite end, which, in living organisms, we must define as the formation and continued maintenance of individuals of a definite form. But there are numerous instances of vital processes which do not serve a recognisable purpose. Such processes obey the rules of probability. Of these the Mendelian laws of heredity are an example. (...) The inheritance of variations, which are of no importance to the organism, occurs according to the law of probability, so far as concerns the number of possible combinations. If it should be possible to transform such indifferent variations into variations either useful or harmful to the race, it would be a splendid proof of the power of directedness in vital processes, if it could be demonstrated, that in these new conditions the individuals possessing favourable variations were more numerous than could be expected according to the Mendelian rules.L'autonomie de la biologie se repose sur la finalité qui gouverne le processus biologique. Cette finalité ne signifie pas une efficacité complète, mais seulement l'orientation du processus vers un but déterminé, qui est, chez les êtres vivants, le développement et la conservation d'individus de forme déterminée. Cependant il se produit dans le domaine de la vie de nombreux processus qui ne servent aucun but biologique apparent. De tels processus sont soumis aux règles de la probabilité. Nous citons comme exemple les lois de l'hérédité de Mendel. L'hérédité de variétés indifférentes pour les êtres vivants correspond, en ce qui concerne les combinaisons possibles, aux règles de la probabilité. Si l'on pouvait obtenir , que de telles variétés deviennent utiles ou nuisibles à ces races, la domination de la finalité dans le processus biologique serait prouvée de façon éclatante, s'il apparaissait, que sous des conditions ainsi transformées, il se produisait un plus grand nombre d'individus présentant la variation favorable, qu'il ne serait à prévoir d'après les lois de Mendel. Das Forschungsfeld der Synthetischen Biologie lässt sich als eine Fortentwicklung der Gentechnik verstehen, bei der in besonderer Weise ingenieurwissenschaftliche Methoden und Paradigmen zum Tragen kommen. Die Synthetische Biologie profitiert dabei von den Fortschritten der Gensequenzierungs- und DNA-Synthesetechnologien und von neuen Verfahren des Genome Editing. DNA-Sequenzen bis hin zu ganzen Genomen einzelliger Organismen können rekombiniert und vollständig synthetisiert werden und die entsprechenden intra- und interzellulären Prozesse können zielgerichtet verändert werden. L’idée de progrès social qui lui sert de fil conducteur s’éclaire lorsqu’on la compare à la hiérarchie animale telle qu’elle est conçue notamment par Lamarck et Blainville. De ce point de vue, on s’aperçoit que les critiques déjà formulées par Cuvier envers une telle hiérarchie préfigurent celles qu’on peut adresser à la conception comtienne de l’histoire, qui semble postuler une corrélation trop rigide entre les différents aspects sociaux. Mais (...) ne peut-on pas alors interpréter les idées de progrès social et de hiérarchie animale comme des principes régulateurs et non des faits observables? (shrink)

The use of teleological language in biology is burdened with many difficulties. Speakers in everyday and scientific discourse confuse functions with purposes and misunderstand functionality, finality, and intentionality. The paper is structured into three sections. In the first part the difference between Platonic supranatural and Aristotelian quasi-natural account of teleology will be explained, with examples from the history of philosophy of biology. The second part will present the Darwinian approach to etiology that constitutes a more sound alternative to the teleological (...) explanation. In the last section I will briefly introduce the teleological bias that is studied by developmental and cognitive psychologists. I believe that this psychological inclination is the real source of intuitive worldviews that are incompatible with contemporary science. (shrink)

This memoir consists of two parts, of which the first deals with the foundations of the theory of the struggle for existence, and begins with the introduction of the important concept of quantity of life, besides that of population. The fundamental equations are then established for the case where the individuals of a biological association mutually devour each other, the reasoning being based on the principle of encounters and on the fundamental hypothesis of the existence of equivalents of the individuals (...) constituting the different species which form the association.Having now obtained the equations which determine the rates of change of the numbers of individuals and of the quantities of life of the species, the memoir proceeds to find the equations relating to the stationary state, by establishing theorems which are afterwards applied for the purpose of obtaining the three general laws of the fluctuations. This investigation of the equilibrium state is then followed by the determination of the integrals of the fluctuation equations, and the deduction from these of their most important consequences.The second part of the memoir contains the enumeration and demonstration of the general laws of the struggle for existence, which flow from the discussion of the principles and the integrals obtained in the first part. In this way there is established a new sort of dynamics, demographic dynamics, which, though substantially different from the dynamics of material systems, is developed from an analogous point of view.The second part begins with the principle of the conservation of demographic energy, according to which there are two sorts of energy, one actual and one potential, which transform mutually the one into the other. This principle is the analogue of the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. It is followed by the enunciation of the three laws relating to the biological fluctuations, the experimental verification of which has been investigated by several naturalists. The success which has attended their efforts is well known.Everybody knows the importance ofHamilton's principle in mechanics and in all the domains of physical science. An analogous variation principle can be found in biology, and from it one can deduce the fluctuation equations in the canonical Hamiltonian form and also in the form of a Jacobian partial differential equation. Their integrals in involution from the subject next studied, and in this way are found cases where the integration is reducible to quadratures.Hamilton's principle leads to the principle of least action . There exists also in biology a closely related principle, which may be called the principle of least vital action. Its analytical form is such that it requires the existence of a true minimum, a state of affairs which does not always hold good in the analogous case in mechanics.Die Abhandlung besteht aus zwei Teilen: Der erste ist den Grundlagen der Theorie des Kampfes ums Dasein gewidmet. Man beginnt damit, neben der Bevölkerung die Menge des Lebens einzuführen, welche eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielt. Man geht dann dazu über, die Grundgleichungen für den Fall aufzustellen, in welchem die Individuen einer biologischen Assoziation sich gegenseitig auffressen. Für sie haben verschiedene Naturforscher experimentelle Bestätigungen gesucht. Man kennt den Erfolg ihrer Bemühungen.Alle Welt kennt die Bedeutung des Prinzips vonHamilton in der Mechanik und in allen Gebieten der Physik. Man kann ein dem Variationskalkül analoges Prinzip in der Biologie finden. Aus ihm kann man die Fluktuationsgleichungen in der kanonischen Form vonHamilton und in der Gestalt einer Gleichung mit partiellen Differentialquotienten vonJacobi herleiten. Ihre Integrale bilden den Gegenstand der folgenden Studien. Man findet Fälle, in denen die Integration sich auf Quadraturen reduziert.Das Prinzip vonHamilton zieht das Prinzip der kleinsten Wirkung oder das Prinzip vonMaupertuis nach sich. Auch in der Biologie gibt es ein mit dem vorgenannten zusammenhängendes Prinzip, welches man das Prinzip der kleinsten vitalen Wirkung nennen kann. In no field of knowledge did Aristotle leave more writings than in biol­ogy. He conducted research for longer and more intensively in zoology than in any other field. In these writings he mentions a good 550 animal and 60 plant species. While this includes the internal anatomy of around 110 animals, he dissected 60 species himself. The present contribution deals with the epistemic motifs and the meaning of Aristotelian biology in the context of his scientific curriculum. It is thus demonstrated (...) that in De anima Aristotle’s actual explanations are preceded by an investi­gation of the principles, which aims to differentiate living objects from inanimate ones, and to develop a method of explanation based on the species-specific vital functions of living beings. This article provides an overview of the four main disciplines of Aristotelian biology: compara­tive anatomy, physiology, genetics and behavioral research. The laws of vital phenomena are to a high degree in contradiction with the principle of absolute causality. Hence the problem arises, what position and rank this principle occupies in biology. The solution of this contradiction might be found in a relaxation of the principle, or in its broadening or by means of the addition of a second heterogenic principle of relationship.The first solution is today rather in favour, since modern physics, especially based on the ”Uncertainty Principle” ofHeisenberg, is inclined (...) to repudiate a strictly causal connection of events in the realm of atomic processes.Broadening of the principle of causality is aimed at to a certain degree by the doctrine of holism. According to this theory biological axioms, principles, and laws are the more universal and the more widely valid, and physical laws should be deduced from them by simplification .The third way is followed by vitalistic doctrines.The ”trialistic” doctrine, presented by the author, represents a development of vitalistic theory. It does not content itself with establishing the fact of the heterogenity of causal and biological laws, but tries to go beyond this and to understand, why the laws of the organic world are of just their special kind and not of another. Moreover it attempts to fit these distinctive principles into the universal system of laws. The trialistic theory divides the wholeness of events into three fundamentally different ”dimensions”, into ”matter”, ”psyche” and ”spirit”, or within the special sphere of living forms into: material, vital and organismic ”dimension”. While in the material sphere the causal connection remains dominant, solely and absolutely, the spiritual or organismic ”dimension” is ruled by ”finality”, a mode of connection of a special kind, caracterized by an active influence on the present of the non-realised future.The interposition of a neutral sphere opens up the possibility of understanding the interweaving of causal and final laws, without interference with one another.Les lois des apparitions de la vie sont difficilement conciliables avec le principe d'une causalité absolue. Le problème se pose donc de savoir, quelle position et quel rÔle ce principe occupe en biologie. La solution de cette contradiction pourrait Être trouvée dans une atténuation ou un élargissement de ce principe comme tel ou par l'adjonction d'un second principe de liaison hétérogène.La première solution est en faveur aujourd'hui depuis que la physique moderne, s'appuyant principalement sur la „Unsicherheitsrelation” deHeisenberg, tend à renoncer à une liaison strictement causale de ce qui se passe dans le domaine des processus atomiques.L'élargissement du principe de causalité est désiré en un certain sens par le holisme. Selon cette théorie les axiomes, les principes et les lois biologiques sont plus universels et d'une valeur plus étendue et il faut en déduire les règles physiques par dérivation simplifiante .La troisième solution nous est donnée par les doctrines vitalistes.La théorie présentée par l'auteur, appelée „trialiste”, met en avant un développement de la doctrine vitaliste. Il ne lui suffit pas de s'arrÊter à l'existence de l'hétérogénité des lois causales et biologiques, mais elle veut aller plus loin, afin de savoir pourquoi les règles déterminant l'organisme sont telles et pas autres. Et elle cherche à mettre de l'ordre dans les principes déterminants en les ènboÎtant dans le système universel de lois. La théorie trialiste divise l'univers des événements en trois „dimensions” qui sont: Matière, „Psyché” et Esprit, ou dans le domaine spécial des formes vivantes en: Matière, Dimension vitale et Dimension organismique. Tandis que dans la dimension matérielle la connexion causale est uniquement et absolument valable, la dimension spirituelle ou organismique est régie par la „Finalité”, un mode de connexion d'un genre spécial, désigné par une influence active du présent par le futur non réalisé.L'interposition d'une sphère neutre nous amène à la possibilité de comprendre l'enchaÎnement es lois causales et finales sans que les unes détruisent les autres. La biologie expérimentale et causale a pour tâche d’apprendre à connaître le genre de rapports qui existent entre toutes les parties de l'organisme. A côté de la reproductibilité des phénomenes de détail dépendant de causes, il у a la reproduction naturelle de l’événement de la vie dans sa totalité. La reproductibilité du résultat de causes nombreuses suppose, comme donné, l’ordre ou la structure de ces causes. La biologie est, en première ligne, la science de ces structures causales. L’on (...) peut montrer diverses sortes de formes de ces structures. Il n’y a pas d’explication causale de la vie ; eile est seulement décrite comme ensemble de rapports. Finality, the characteristic sign of vital processes, implies no opposition to causality; on the contrary the causal method of thinking must be applied to living nature. We must, however, distinguish between a final causality, one directed towards reaching a specific goal, and a causality which works mechanically without reference to a goal.A final or teleological treatment is applicable to inanimate nature as well, and is by many philosophers and physicists so applied. This teleology is however merely the inverse of causality. (...) According as we look forwards or backwards along the course of an event we can think of it in terms of means and end or of cause and effect . This method of interpretation can in the inorganic realm be applied to any stage of a process. In contradistinction therefrom the stages of the processes which occur in living nature are in no way equivalent, inasmuch as only one quite definite state can be regarded as the real and specific goal of the particular process. Auch gibt es bisher nur wenige Lesarten, die Kants Philosophie der Biologie im Ganzen erschließen und versuchen, sie in die vielschichtigen historischen Kontexte der frühneuzeitlichen Naturforschung einzuordnen. Das vorliegende Buch schließt diese Lücken. Es verteidigt die Thesen, dass Kant organisierte Wesen durch drei Arten von Kräften und Gesetzen charakterisiert – durch (...) mechanische, physisch teleologische und moralteleologische Krätfe und Gesetze – deren Vereinbarkeit im Bewusstsein des Menschen, und in der Erfahrungswelt, so, wie sie dem Menschen erscheint, auf der regulativen Idee ihrer Einheit im schöpferischen, theoretisch praktischen Bewusstsein Gottes beruht.
