    Do anthropologists become moral relativists by mistake?V. A. Howard - 1968 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 11 (1-4):175 – 189.
It is argued that anthropologists become moral relativists by mistake typically in two ways: (1) by confusing moral with factual discourse (dubbed the Normativist Fallacy) which derives in turn from a failure to distinguish adequately between direct and indirect discourse in the description of moral systems and preferences; or (2) by confusing definitive with hypothetical statements in descriptive ethics (the Definitivist Fallacy). Two representative arguments illustrating these errors are analyzed and some morals drawn from the results regarding the status of (...)

    On Musical Quotation.V. A. Howard - 1974 - The Monist 58 (2):307-318.
Criteria of quotationality vary in nonlinguistic symbol systems, and there is the question whether quotation is even possible in some contexts. For instance, can one painting or dance movement quote another? If a painting is autographic, how can it be duplicated in a pictorial quotation? And if scored dance gestures can be duplicated like words and sentences, what then corresponds to the reference giving quotation marks in language—stage-winks fore and aft? This is enough to show that different arts have different (...)

  45. Kierkegaard's Writings, V: Eighteen Upbuilding Discourses.Howard V. Hong & Edna H. Hong (eds.) - 1992 - Princeton University Press.
There is much to be learned philosophically from this volume, but philosophical instruction was not Kierkegaard's aim here, except in the broad sense of self-knowledge and deepened awareness. Indicating the intention of the discourses, the titles include "The Expectancy of Faith," "Love Will Hide a Multitude of Sins," "Strengthening in the Inner Being," "To Gain One's Soul in Patience," "Patience in Expectancy," and "Against Cowardliness."In tone and substance these works are in accord with the concluding words of encouragement in Either/Or, (...)

    Significance Testing with No Alternative Hypothesis: A Measure of Surprise.J. V. Howard - 2009 - Erkenntnis 70 (2):253-270.
A pure significance test would check the agreement of a statistical model with the observed data even when no alternative model was available. The paper proposes the use of a modified p -value to make such a test. The model will be rejected if something surprising is observed. It is shown that the relation between this measure of surprise and the surprise indices of Weaver and Good is similar to the relationship between a p -value, a corresponding odds-ratio, and a (...)

  47. Kierkegaard's Writings, Xv: Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits.Howard V. Hong & Edna H. Hong (eds.) - 2009 - Princeton University Press.
In his praise for Part I of Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, the eminent Kierkegaard scholar Eduard Geismar said, "I am of the opinion that nothing of what he has written is to such a degree before the face of God. Anyone who really wants to understand Kierkegaard does well to begin with it." These discourses, composed after Kierkegaard had initially intended to end his public writing career, constitute the first work of his "second authorship." Characterized by Kierkegaard as ethical-ironic, (...)

Kierkegaard's Writings, Xiv: Two Ages: "The Age of Revolution" and the "Present Age" a Literary Review.Howard V. Hong & Edna H. Hong (eds.) - 1978 - Princeton University Press.
After deciding to terminate his authorship with the pseudonymous Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Kierkegaard composed reviews as a means of writing without being an author. Two Ages, here presented in a definitive English text, is simultaneously a review and a book in its own right. In it, Kierkegaard comments on the anonymously published Danish novel Two Ages, which contrasts the mentality of the age of the French Revolution with that of the subsequent epoch of rationalism. Kierkegaard commends the author's shrewdness, and (...)
