Ober die Beziehungen (...) zwischen Husseds Phiinomenologie und der Kantischen und neukantianischen Philosophie ist schon Vieles ge schrieben worden. Dabei wurden die verschiedensten Auffassun gen geaussert; man kann sagen, dass hier die ganze Skala mogli cher Deutungen durchgangen wurde. Am einen Ende dieser Skala steht Hussed als Antipode Kants und jeglichen N eukantianismus, am andem Ende der N eukantianer Hussed; und dazwischen liegen nuanciertere Bilder. Offenbar sind die Beziehungen zwi schen Hussed einerseits und Kant und den Neukantianem an dererseits komplexer Natur; offenbar bestehen hier aber auch innere Beziehungen, seien sie nun positiver oder negativer Art. Es drangte Hussed selbst danach, sich iiber sein Verhaltnis zur Philosophie Kants klar auszusprechen_ Fiir sein letztes Werk, fiir die Krisis, hatte er eine Auseinandersetzung mit Kant geplant.l Bevor er aber diesen Plan ausfiihren konnte, erreichte ihn der Tod. Wie vielleicht kein anderes seiner Werke reprasentieren Reinholds Verhandlungen sein lebenslanges Bemuhen, die Aufklarung in Kooperation und Auseinandersetzung mit anderen Selbstdenkern voranzutreiben. Sie umfassen drei Beitrage. Der zweite, der Entwurf zu einem Einverstandnisse unter Wohlgesinnten, resultiert aus Diskussionen, die Reinhold mit freimaurerischen Freunden fuhrte. Hier geht es im Kern um die Frage, wie sich dem aufgeklarten Denken kantischer Pragung die notige soziale Wirkung und organisatorische Kraft verschaffen liesse. Dieser Entwurf wurde weithin an Freunde und Bekannte verschickt, mit der Bitte, (...) dem Einverstandnis beizutreten. Aber auch konstruktive Kritik erbat Reinhold. Von den Antworten, die er erhielt, druckte er neun Briefe mit seinen eigenen Repliken ab - der dritte Beitrag. Der erste Beitrag enthalt Reinholds ausfuhrliche, im Umfang stark erweiterte Umarbeitung des Entwurfs. (shrink)

Neuausgabe des grundlegenden Werkes des englischen Empirismus nach der Übersetzung von Theodor Lipps Das Erstlingswerk von David Hume (1711–1776), das hier in der bearbeiteten Übersetzung von Theodor Lipps neu ediert wird, trägt den Titel A Treatise of Human Nature: Being an Attempt to Introduce the Experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects; die Bücher I und II der Schrift (Über den Verstand, Über die Affekte) wurden 1739 anonym publiziert, Buch III (Über Moral) folgte 1740, ebenfalls anonym. Die großen Erwartungen, die (...) der Autor in die Veröffentlichung der drei Bücher setzte, erfüllten sich nicht – sie fielen »als Totgeburt aus der Presse« (so Hume über die Nichtbeachtung seines Erstlings durch die Zeitgenossen). Heute gilt das Jugendwerk, da es im Kern bereits die ganze Philosophie des kritischen Empirikers enthält, als Humes grundlegendes theoretisches Werk. Humes Wissenschaft von der menschlichen Natur vollzieht sich in einer doppelten Bewegung: Sie zerstört der Intention nach die traditionelle Metaphysik und etabliert deren ihr selbst verborgene Wahrheit in einer neuartigen Geisteswissenschaft oder Anthropologie, der »science of man«. In dieser anthropologischen Restauration der rationalistischen Metaphysik ähnelt die Humesche Philosophie der Anthropologie in der Renaissance und der beginnenden Neuzeit, die sich gegen die Scholastik und deren Ontologie wendet und ein anthropozentrisches Konzept an ihre Stelle setzt. Die militante Anthropologie Humes destruiert den Rationalismus und rekonstruiert die von ihren falschen Prätentionen gereinigte Philosophie in einem neuen Medium. In dieser Negation und Ersetzung erhebt sie einen universalistischen Erkenntnisanspruch – und nimmt diesen als bloß empirische Seelenlehre und Phänomenologie zugleich zurück. (shrink)

Academic and public debates are increasingly concerned with the question whether and how algorithmic decision-making may reinforce social inequality. Most previous research on this topic originates from computer science. The social sciences, however, have huge potentials to contribute to research on social consequences of ADM. Based on a process model of ADM systems, we demonstrate how social sciences may advance the literature on the impacts of ADM on social inequality by uncovering and mitigating biases in training data, by understanding data (...) processing and analysis, as well as by studying social contexts of algorithms in practice. Furthermore, we show that fairness notions need to be evaluated with respect to specific outcomes of ADM systems and with respect to concrete social contexts. Social sciences may evaluate how individuals handle algorithmic decisions in practice and how single decisions aggregate to macro social outcomes. In this overview, we highlight how social sciences can apply their knowledge on social stratification and on substantive domains of ADM applications to advance the understanding of social impacts of ADM. We study a class of two-player normal-form games with cyclical payoff structures. A game is called circulant if both players’ payoff matrices fulfill a rotational symmetry condition. The class of circulant games contains well-known examples such as Matching Pennies, Rock-Paper-Scissors, as well as subclasses of coordination and common interest games. The best response correspondences in circulant games induce a partition on each player’s set of pure strategies into equivalence classes. In any Nash Equilibrium, all strategies within one class are either (...) played with strictly positive or with zero probability. We further show that, strikingly, a single parameter fully determines the exact number and the structure of all Nash equilibria in these games. The parameter itself only depends on the position of the largest payoff in the first row of one of the player’s payoff matrix. (shrink)

We investigated the properties of the sustained attention to response task . In the SART, participants respond to frequent neutral signals and are required to withhold response to rare critical signals. We examined whether SART performance shows characteristics of speed–accuracy tradeoffs and in addition, we examined whether SART performance is influenced by prior exposure to emotional picture stimuli. Thirty-six participants in this study performed SARTs after being exposed to neutral and negative picture stimuli. Performance in the SART changed rapidly over (...) time and there was a high correlation between participants errors of commission rate and their reaction time to the neutral targets . Regardless of exposure self-reported thoughts significantly correlated with both errors of commission and reaction times. Overall, the results support the view that the SART is a better measure of impulsive responding than sustained attention. (shrink)

When young children learn to use language, they start to use their hands in co‐verbal gesturing. There are, however, considerable differences between children, and it is not completely understood what these individual differences are due to. We studied how children at 4 years of age employ speech and iconic gestures to convey meaning in different kinds of spatial event descriptions, and how this relates to their cognitive abilities. Focusing on spontaneous illustrations of actions, we applied a semantic feature (SF) analysis (...) to characterize combinations of speech and gesture meaning and related them to the child's visual‐spatial abilities or abstract/concrete reasoning abilities (measured using the standardized SON‐R test). Results show that children with higher cognitive abilities convey significantly more meaning via gesture and less solely via speech. These findings suggest that young children's use of cospeech representational gesturing is positively related to their mental representation and reasoning abilities. (shrink)
