    The Legions of the Euphrates Frontier.R. Knox M'Elderry - 1909 - Classical Quarterly 3 (01):44-.
In a recently-published work of much learning and great interest, La Frontière de l'Euphrate de Pompée à la Conquète Arabe , M. Victor Chapot has dealt at some length with the history of the eastern legions. But neither he, nor, so far as I can find, any other writer, has attempted to fix their camps with full regard to chronology, and many points have been left uncertain. Although there is little direct evidence—less than for any other part of the Roman (...)

    The Second Legionary Camp in Palestine.R. Knox M'Elderry - 1908 - Classical Quarterly 2 (02):110-.
Was there a second legion in Palestine at all ? Mommsen has raised a doubt. In his note on C.I.L. iii 6641 ‘M. Iunio Maximo Leg. Augg. Leg. X Fr….’ he says ‘Quo tempore titulus positus est provinciam Palaestinam una sola legio obtinuerit necesse est X Fretensis; nam Augustorum vocabulum legatis legionis non solet addi nisi simul provinciae praesunt. Legio VI Ferrata quamquam a Dione in Iudaea collocatur, vide ne castra habuerit in Batanaea quae fuit sub legato Syriae Phoenices.’ On (...)

    Die ‘Rechtsphilosophie’ von 1820 mit Hegels Vorlesungsnotizen 1821–1825. [REVIEW]T. M. Knox - 1974 - The Owl of Minerva 6 (2):1-2.
This is the second of Professor K-H Ilting’s six volumes on Hegel’s Philosophie des Rechts. His first volume was reviewed and his enterprise described in The Owl of Minerva, December 1973. When I was asked to review this second volume, I thought that a very short notice would suffice, because it was to contain the text of the Ph. d. R. and Hegel’s Randbemerkungen. I was entirely mistaken. This volume is a major contribution to Hegelian scholarship, and I must try (...)

Hegel’s political philosophy used to be judged mainly by the Philosophie des Rechts, and this book was interpreted differently by various students. More recently, serious account has been taken of Hegel’s earlier political writings, published and unpublished. Professor Ilting believes that Hegel’s real and liberal views were contained in lectures before and after the Ph. d. R. and that that book was a temporary aberration, a concession to the Carlsbad Decrees, and an attempt to satisfy the Prussian censor. Consequently he (...)

    Juvenal in Ireland?R. Knox McElderry - 1922 - Classical Quarterly 16 (3-4):151-.
If such rhetorical flourishes are allowed any weight against indisputable historical fact, what strange inferences might we not draw from Juvenal's exclamation: “… Arma quidem ultra litora Iuuernae promouimus” or “de conducendo loquitur iam rhetore Thyle.“’.

    Perceived ethical values of Malaysian managers.A. R. M. Zabid & S. K. Alsagoff - 1993 - Journal of Business Ethics 12 (4):331-337.
This paper examines the perceived ethical values of Malaysian managers. It is based on the opinions of 15 hypothetical ethical/unethical business situations from the 81 managers who agreed to participate in the survey. The findings of this study showed that these Malaysian managers have high ethical values. However 53% of the respondents believed that the ethical standards of today are lower than that of 15 years ago. Apparently, this is related to the existence of many unethical business practices prevalent in (...)

  23. Today’s positive affect predicts tomorrow’s experience of meaningful coincidences: a cross-lagged multilevel analysis.Christian Rominger, Andreas Fink, Corinna M. Perchtold-Stefan & Andreas R. Schwerdtfeger - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
The perception of meaningful patterns in random arrangements and unrelated events takes place in our everyday lives, coined apophenia, synchronicity, or the experience of meaningful coincidences. However, we do not know yet what predicts this phenomenon. To investigate this, we re-analyzed a combined data set of two daily diary studies with a total of N = 169 participants (mean age 29.95 years; 54 men). We investigated if positive or negative affect (PA, NA) predicts the number of meaningful coincidences on the (...)

    Incommensurability: Its Implications for the Patient/Physician Relation.R. M. Veatch & W. E. Stempsey - 1995 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 20 (3):253-269.
Scientific authority and physician authority are both challenged by Thomas Kuhn's concept of incommensurability. If competing “paradigms” or “world views” cannot rationally be compared, we have no means to judge the truth of any particular view. However, the notion of local or partial incommensurability might provide a framework for understanding the implications of contemporary philosophy of science for medicine. We distinguish four steps in the process of translating medical science into clinical decisions: the doing of the science, the appropriation of (...)

    First-Order Modal Logic: Frame Definability and a Lindström Theorem.R. Zoghifard & M. Pourmahdian - 2018 - Studia Logica 106 (4):699-720.
We generalize two well-known model-theoretic characterization theorems from propositional modal logic to first-order modal logic. We first study FML-definable frames and give a version of the Goldblatt–Thomason theorem for this logic. The advantage of this result, compared with the original Goldblatt–Thomason theorem, is that it does not need the condition of ultrafilter reflection and uses only closure under bounded morphic images, generated subframes and disjoint unions. We then investigate Lindström type theorems for first-order modal logic. We show that FML has (...)

On September 18, 1995, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit handed down a decision in Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin v. Marshfield Clinic ) that sets two important precedents regarding the status of health maintenance organizations under antitrust law. Chief Judge Posner, writing for the court, concluded that HMOs do not constitute a market separate from the general market for medical services and that agreements, between HMOs in a region, to operate in separate areas (...)

Demosthenis Orationes Ii: Tomvs Ii.M. R. Dilts (ed.) - 2002 - Oxford University Press UK.
This new edition corrects shortcomings of earlier editors by providing a text which incorporates neglected or unavailable material from Greek manuscripts, recently published papyri, and quotations from the orations by rhetoricians dating from antiquity through to the Byzantine period. All this information is presented in notes in Greek and Latin, which will not only allow convenient access to evidence for the text but will also provide references to ancient and medieval interpretations of the orations.
