The present commentary emphasizes that the acquisition of fear always involves complex changes in several quasi-independent response systems. Stimulus-specific electrodermal response differentiation as well as the bias to overestimate the belongingness of certain stimulus pairs mainly indicates cognitive processes of selective orienting and attention. Emotion, however, also involves the activation of subcortical motivational circuits. Why certain stimuli acquire rapid access to these basic motivational systems is not explained by the expectancy bias model.

One of the main theses defended in the Critique of Judgment – the specific aesthetic nature of an object solely consists of what is “merely subjective” – offers a wide range of points to be clarified in Kant´s third critical chief work. These includes above all the crucial question of justification of a special type of judgment based, on one hand, on a purely aesthetic satisfaction and claiming, on the other, a general approval and hence some kind of intersubjective validity: (...) a question which according to Kant only can be solved in a transcendental way, what means: on the basis of a principle a priori, universally valid for all aesthetic judgments. One of the most important structural components of this doctrine is undoubtedly Kant´s key concept of a “free play of the faculties of cognition” and the further issue of a “sensus communis aestheticus”. My purpose is to show that in these sections is stated that we have to consider, besides the particular structure of an aesthetic judgment, its specific feasibility conditions, and that in this respect Kant´s concept of an “aesthetic common sense” represents an important systematic complement addition to his transcendental argumentation strategy as a whole. Tendo em vista a postura crítica de Platão relativamente à arte “mimética”, pode causar surpresa que quase todos os diálogos dele se apresentem, não obstante a riqueza e a variedade do seu conteúdo doutrinal, também como criações literárias de caráter eminentemente artístico, ou seja, como produtos poeticamente bem organizados, e, enquanto tais, pertencentes exatamente àquela arte “mimética” que ele, Platão, considera tão nociva e perigosa que até recomenda proibir e bani-la da cidade. O que pode explicar essa aparente contradição é (...) o fato de a crítica platônica visar não simplesmente qualquer forma de produção artística, mas, em primeiro lugar, o ofício duvidoso daquele tipo de artista que, por não ter acesso à esfera da verdade, trabalha como ilusionista e criador de meros fantasmas e, praticando esta “arte”, pretende fazer se passar por sábio e educador competente do povo. Para quem conseguiu, no entanto, diferentemente de tal “imitador de sombras”, deixar para trás o mundo da ilusão e encontrar, ou, como o filósofo, construir o caminho para o verdadeiro saber, a arte mimética representa um recurso absolutamente legítimo, já que ela, neste caso, não se realiza mais em forma de uma “imitação” enganadora de determinados objetos, mas como reprodução dos mesmos de forma mais “correta” e mais fiel possível, constituindo, assim, um importante recurso para preparar e familiarizar o leitor com um modo particular de pensamento filosófico, o que significa em Platão: demonstrar que, para ele, um dos motivos mais importantes consistiu em mostrar que Filosofia não se reduz ao mero conhecimento de certas doutrinas filosóficas, mas significa, em primeiro lugar, aprender filosofar. São muitas e, até hoje, muito controvertidas as opiniões referentes à função e ao lugar sistemático da filosofia da história de Kant no todo do seu projeto crítico-transcendental; nem há consenso quanto à importância ou relevância filosófica dos diversos escritos em que Kant aborda e defende os seus teoremas histórico- políticos. – No presente trabalho, pretende-se interpretar a “doutrina” histórico-filosófica kantiana – não obstante o seu caráter fragmentário e até aparentemente nem sempre coerente – na perspectiva da sua possível homogeneidade (...) e compatibilidade com os elementos centrais da própria teoria-base transcendental. Isso significa, antes de mais nada, ler os respectivos teoremas não como resultados de um raciocínio dogmático baseado num saber do processo histórico, mas como um conjunto de teses e postulados baseados no mero suposto subjetivo-racional de um progresso, ou seja, na idéia não só da possibilidade mas da necessidade (subjetiva) da razão de implantar princípios racionais na história. ABSTRACT There are many different and controversial opinions about the function and the systematic place of Kant’s philosophy of history in the context of his critical-transcendental project on the whole, as well as about the philosophic relevance of his historical-political writings. – This paper aims to interpret Kant’s historical-philosophical “doctrine” – in despite of its fragmentary character and of some apparent incoherences – in the horizon of its possible homogeneity and compatibility with the central elements of the basic transcendental theory. That means, above all: read the theorems in question not as results of a dogmatic thought based on the knowledge of historical processes, but as a set of thesis and postulates based on the mere subjective- rational supposition of progress, that is, on the idea that it is not only possible, but a (subjective) need of reason to implant rational principles in history. In this article the author argues to what extent Neoplatonic concepts (Epiphany, Negative Theology, Theology of Light and Metaphor of Light) derived from Johannes Scotus Eriugena, translator of the Corpus Areopagiticum into latin, relate to the Iconography of Crist-Light or Maiestas domini in a (...) mandorle of light. Writings of various thinkers, paintings from the 12th century and medieval epigraphy are taken as primary sources in order to understand the relationship between Neoplatonism and Iconography in the European Middle Ages. In Section I, different characterization of the theoretical status, systematic importance and possible applications of cybernetics in the human sciences are sketched, according to view points currently developing in Soviet and Eastern science. Significant differences from the Western scientific approaches are pointed out. The connection of this field with work on heuristics and systems theory is briefly dealt with. Section II gives a critical appraisal of the ideas of B. V. Birjukov on the 'humanization of logic'. The question of the (...) possibility of a special logic of creativity according to this and similar methods in cybernetics is outlined, followed by a short critical analysis. Section III gives a short general introduction to some problems of the comparison of formal with dialectical logic, criticizes the work of J. Erpenbeck and H. Hörz on lawlike sentences and proposes a new scheme for dialectical hypothesis formation. A Critical comparison with some recent developments in Soviet philosophy forms the conclusion. (shrink)

The objective of this article is to contribute to an understanding of Hannah Arendt’s special place in present-day political theory by means of a contrast between her Origins of Totalitarianism and four important political science studies of National Socialism and totalitarianism, three written by authors who shared the status of involuntary emigrant with Arendt, that are offered as constituting the original context of her work. A critical appreciation of the seminal works by Ernst Fraenkel, Franz L. Neumann, Sigmund Neumann, and (...) Carl Joachim Friedrich and Zbigniew Brezinski, with special emphasis on questions of method, opens the way to a reconsideration of the distinctly philosophical character of Arendt’s work, and its shocking challenges to the scientific orientations of political science.
