Das Verhältnis von analytischer Philosophie und mittelalterlicher Philosophie ist umstritten. Einerseits wird die Philosophie des Mittelalters wenigstens teilweise als analytische Philosophie typisiert oder rezipiert, andererseits glaubt man nicht, dass das analytische Paradigma eine angemessene Perspektive für das Verständnis der mittelalterlichen Philosophie bietet. In dieser Kontroverse wird in der Regel ein undifferenzierter Begriff von analytischer Philosophie verwendet. Betrachtet man die wesentlichen Charakterisierungen jener Strömung durch ihre Hauptvertreter selbst, dann erscheinen Begriffsanalyse, Logikzentriertheit und Metaphysikkritik (...) als zentrale Komponenten des Selbstverständnisses der analytischen Philosophie. Indessen sind alle drei Charakteristika in vielfältiger Weise auch in der mittelalterlichen Philosophie wiederzufinden. Daher erweisen sich programmatische Abgrenzungsversuche von analytischer und mittelalterlicher Philosophie als revisionsbedürftig. Die Philosophie des Mittelalters ist in zentralen Teilen und Hinsichten als analytische Philosophie zu charakterisieren. Die analytische Philosophie ist wesentlich mit einem Methodenstandard verbunden, der sich in der gesamten Philosophiegeschichte nachweisen lässt und auf den in der philosophiegeschichtlichen Arbeit, nicht zuletzt in der philosophischen Mediävistik, mit Gewinn zurückzugreifen ist. Throughout its history, analytic philosophy has established a decidedly anti-rhetoric self-understanding. Yet the historical development of analytic philosophy, leading from Russell to Quine and Davidson, successively puts this anti-rhetorical ideals in question. Even though the rhetorics of clarity and objectivity remain, the discussions of post-analytic philosophy focus more and more an an understanding of language which is forced to acknowledge its irreducible practical and situational aspects. Analytical philosophy, then, should be seen as a decidedly anti-rhetoric tradition which tries to keep (...) up the spirit of scientific enlightenment in times of growing skepticism -- and which is driven, by the very force of clarity and a better understanding, to develop a picture of language which undermines this ideal at least in some aspects. In seinem Beitrag Was bleibt von der Analytischen Philosophie? hat Peter Bieri all das aufgelistet, was ihm an der gegenwärtigen Analytischen Philosophie missfällt. In dieser Replik wird erstens die Geschichte der Analytischen Philosophie in Erinnerung gerufen. Zweitens wird in Auseinandersetzung mit Bieris Kritik folgendes Bild von Philosophie entworfen: Es gibt überdauernde philosophische Fragen, und Philosophie sollte nicht als ein essayistisches Unternehmen, sondern als der systematische Versuch verstanden werden, Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Allerdings lassen (...) sich philosophische Fragen niemals definitiv beantworten; deshalb kann das Ziel nur sein, einen möglichst vollständigen Überblick über die verschiedenen Antworten zu geben und dabei zugleich klar zu machen, was für und was gegen diese Antworten spricht. Until now, a systematic new evaluation of transcendental phenomenology that gives due attention to the analytic philosophy of mind has been lacking, despite several recent studies in this area. With an emphasis on Husserl’s anti-representationalist theory of the intentionality of consciousness, the present study demonstrates phenomenology’s descriptive and explanatory potential and presents it as a serious interlocutor not only for the philosophy of mind and cognition but also for contemporary language philosophy and epistemology.

Historically contingent concepts like human dignity do not allow for the exclusion of historical considerations from their analysis. In order to demonstrate this, the present essay compares the positions of Hans-Johann Glock and Hans Blumenberg. While Glock deals with the convergence of analytic philosophy and historical approaches, Blumenberg highlights the importance of historical constants. Glock argues for a pragmatic historicism according to which historical inquiry is useful but not indispensable. Through comparison with Blumenberg’s position, it is shown that this assessment (...) is incomplete. It is then argued that there is a more fitting position, according to which historical inquiry is essential for some, though not all, concepts. This position is illustrated by the concept of human dignity, which cannot be adequately grasped without reference to its genesis. Blumenberg’s approach can thus help precisely where the connection between analytical philosophy and historical investigation in Glock’s sense falters. (shrink)

By the time of the Prolegomena , Husserl took phenomenology to be a philosophical method that stands in opposition to naturalism, of which psychologism was supposed to be a particularly pernicious instance. Husserl was not the only philosopher at the turn of the century to oppose psychologism. Among his fellow campaigners one finds Frege, who played a decisive role in the development of so-called analytic philosophy, and Dilthey, who stands at the roots of contemporary hermeneutics. When it comes to issues (...) concerning the origins of phenomenology, as opposed to other traditions, anti-psychologism in particular, and anti-naturalism in general, cannot be used as discriminative criteria. With this article, I seek to examine Krause’s analysis of the self in Analitische Philosophie, and in particular in Vorlesungen über die Psychische Anthropologie. But I do so through the texts that the Spanish Krausists devoted either to translating or to discussing and disseminating Krause’s ideas in dialogue with the philosophies of the time. In my exposition and examination of the doctrine of the self, I focus on its embedding in a particular existence through embodiment, and argue that these (...) are aspects with which Krausism can still illuminate the debate about human subjectivity.
