    (In)Definiteness, Polarity, and the Role of Wh-Morphology in Free Choice.Anastasia Giannakidou & Lisa Cheng - 2006 - Journal of Semantics 23 (2):135-183.
In this paper we reconsider the issue of free choice and the role of the wh-morphology employed in it. We show that the property of being an interrogative wh-word alone is not sufficient for free choice, and that semantic and sometimes even morphological definiteness is a pre-requisite for some free choice items (FCIs) in certain languages, e.g. in Greek and Mandarin Chinese. We propose a theory that explains the polarity behaviour of FCIs cross-linguistically, and allows indefinite (Giannakidou 2001) as well (...)

Widespread development of system software, the process of learning, and the excellence in profession of teaching are the formidable challenges faced by the learning behavior prediction system. The learning styles of teachers have different kinds of content designs to enhance their learning. In this learning environment, teachers can work together with the students, but the learning materials are designed by the teachers. The cognitive style deals with mental activities such as learning, remembering, thinking, and the usage of language. Therefore, being (...)

Factors Controlling Organic Matter Enrichment in the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation Shale on the Eastern Shelf Margin of the Yangtze Block, China.Xianglu Tang, Zhenxue Jiang, Zhuo Li, Lijun Cheng, Ye Zhang, Panke Sun & Chunyan Fan - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (3):T399-T410.
The degree of organic matter enrichment in shale determines its oil and gas potential. To understand the factors controlling this OM enrichment, we have used petrological and geochemical analyses to study the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation Shale in the eastern shelf margin of the Yangtze Block. Our results reveal that the total organic carbon content of the Niutitang Formation Shale varies significantly throughout the vertical section. The lower part of the Niutitang Formation has a high TOC content, likely due to (...)

Characterization and Origin of the Silurian Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation Shale Multiscale Heterogeneity in Southeastern Sichuan Basin, China.Zhenxue Jiang, Xianglu Tang, Lijun Cheng, Zhuo Li, Yingying Zhang, Yongqiang Bai, Yuan Yuan & Jin Hao - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (2):SJ61-SJ74.
Shale heterogeneity is important for micro- to macroscale-quality reservoir prediction. We evaluated the multiscale heterogeneity in shale based on thin-section observation, field emission scanning electron microscope observation, low-pressure [Formula: see text] adsorption analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, organic carbon analysis, and bulk chemical analysis by X-ray powder diffraction. We evaluated the results in which the heterogeneity of minerals and organic matter in shale was shown by disorderly and unsystematically distributed mineral grains, lamina, and rapid lithology at multiple scales. The random arrangement (...)

    Two Types of Donkey Sentences.Lisa L. S. Cheng & C. T. James Huang - 1996 - Natural Language Semantics 4 (2):121-163.
Mandarin Chinese exhibits two paradigms of conditionals with indefinite wh-words that have the semantics of donkey sentences, represented by ‘bare conditionals’ on the one hand and ruguo- and dou-conditionals on the other. The bare conditionals require multiple occurrences of wh-words, disallowing the use of overt or covert anaphoric elements in the consequent clause, whereas the ruguo- and dou-conditionals present a completely opposite pattern. We argue that the bare conditionals are cases of unselective binding par excellence (Heim 1982, Kamp 1981) while (...)

How Children Feel Matters: Teacher–Student Relationship as an Indirect Role Between Interpersonal Trust and Social Adjustment.Yan Dong, Hongfei Wang, Fang Luan, Zheneng Li & Li Cheng - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Previous studies have demonstrated positive correlations between children’s interpersonal trust and social adjustment. However, the psychological mechanism underlying this effect is still unclear. The current study tested the indirect roles of teacher–student relationships from both students’ and teachers’ perspectives in a Chinese context. In total, 709 pupils from grade three to grade five, and their 17 head teachers from a Chinese public primary school participated in this study. The Children’s Generalized Trust Beliefs Scale, Social Adjustment Scale for Children and Adolescents, (...)

The Role of Academic Buoyancy and Social Support on English as a Foreign Language Learners’ Motivation in Higher Education.Yanxian Jia & Ling Cheng - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Since motivation determines progress in the class, it has a significant role in the field of learning English as a foreign language, contributing to a successful learning process. Therefore, teachers need to motivate learners to achieve their learning goals and provide them with a meaningful learning process in stressful situations. Two factors are required to successfully overcome challenges in scholastic circumstances, such as academic buoyancy and social support. The former can be a significant element in a psycho-educational setting that helps (...)

Analysis of the Internal Architectural Elements of Tidal-Influenced Meandering Fluvial Deposits Using Well Logging and Seismic Data: The Study of the Athabasca Oil Sands, Alberta, Canada.Lifang Cheng, Yanshu Yin, Hui Wang, Wenjie Feng, Lixin Wang, Zhenkun Liu, Pangen Wang & Jiong Liu - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (3):SM103-SM114.
A reservoir was dominated by inclined heterolithic stratification formed in large point bars of the McMurray Formation. We have used high-resolution seismic data and logging data to identify the internal architectural elements of the reservoir. From the core data, we defined four lithofacies and recognized the architectural element boundary. Then, we used stratum dip data across wells, combined with seismic reflectivity, isopach, and amplitude attributes, to understand the lateral continuity of the boundaries. Later, we established the sedimentary model and found (...)

Urban networks have been widely examined using infrastructure connection and firm connection data. In particular, urban networks constructed based on firm connection data have been used to depict the circulation of capital, information, personnel, and products between cities. Existing studies on firm connection networks rely on either inter- or intrafirm relationships. However, there exist various important extra-firm relationships, such as those between firms and governments, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations. This study innovatively incorporates the extra-firm relationships between governments and firms (...)

  16. Two Conceptions of Political Obligation.Lian Cheng - 1999 - Dissertation, Rice University
This thesis addresses one of the central questions in political philosophy, the question of political obligation why people have a duty to support the political institutions of their countries. The traditional and dominant answer to this question is voluntarism, which claims that people have such a duty because they have consented to the ruling of their states. The thesis systematically refutes this voluntarist approach, criticizes some of today's leading non-voluntarist alternatives to the voluntarist one, and advances a new way of (...)

The Newton Au-Ag deposit is an intermediate sulfidation state epithermal system in British Columbia, Canada. Multiple types of geophysical data are interpreted and evaluated with drillcore petrophysical, geochemical, and geologic observations to better understand the geophysical signature of the Newton epithermal system. Airborne [Formula: see text]-ray data sets indicate elevated emission counts of K, eTh, and eU over the Newton epithermal system, which are caused by hydrothermal alteration. Drillcore [Formula: see text]-ray measurements also indicate high potassium concentrations related to the (...)

A New Explanation of the Order of Parts in the Laozi.Liao Mingchun & Li Cheng - 2017 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 48 (3):143-158.
EDITOR’S ABSTRACTThis paper argues that we cannot determine with certainty the sequence of the two parts of the Laozi text: “Way” and “Virtue”. These two parts were originally written independently by Lao Zi and in an uncertain chronological order. They originally circulated separately, and were later combined differently by various editors. Thus emerged the two Laozi versions: The one with “Way” preceding “Virtue” has dominated the transmission; the alternative order can be retrieved from recently discovered sources such as the Mawangdui (...)

In this paper, an adaptive optimizing control is proposed for nonlinear synchronous generator system with uncertain disturbance. Considering the issue of uncertain item, a low-order Extended State Observer is constructed to track each order states. Then, combining Backstepping technology and proposed ESO, a dynamic compensation control is designed to compensate the uncertainty disturbance in each state quantity. The proposed method demonstrated that stability of the system can be ensured, and tracking burden of ESO can be reduced. Finally, simulation results can (...)
