It has often been noted that liberal democracies are facing a serious political crisis. A common reaction to this situation is to call for more comprehensive or more effective liberal democratic education. This volume discusses some of the most important challenges to and critiques of the paradigm of liberal democratic education. In doing so, it offers novel insights into how liberal democratic education can be amended, extended or qualified to address the special challenges of the current political moment.

Thought experiments and simulation experiments are compared and contrasted with each other. While the former rely on epistemic transparency as a working condition, in the latter complexity of model dynamics leads to epistemic opacity. The difference is elucidated by a discussion of the different kinds of iteration that are at work in both sorts of experiment.

Zusammenfassung Nach Luther soll das Evangelium nicht nur in der persönlichen Meditation des Wortes, sondern auch in der öffentlichen Verkündigung, erfahrbar werden. Dies verlangt von der Verkündigung, kritisch zu rechtlichen und sozialen Verhältnissen Stellung zu nehmen. In Spannung zu diesem Anliegen tritt Luthers Instrumentalisierung des Sprachhumanismus für sein Interesse an der objektivierenden Absicherung seiner Lehre durch die äußere Klarheit der Schrift. Der darin gründende Machtanspruch lässt einen antidialogischen und aggressiven Kommunikationsstil und eine feindselige Haltung insbesondere gegen das Judentum und seine (...) eigenständige Schriftauslegung herrschend werden. Der Humanismus verliert damit seinen wesentlichen Gehalt. Doch eine Deutung der Schrift und der Wirklichkeit im Sinne der Christus-Mystik gewinnt erst durch einen offenen Prozess der Interpretation, durch Kontextualisierung, Selbstkritik und durch Dialog an Plausibilität. Die von Luther in der Christologie geforderten Perspektivenwechsel können nur so gelingen und ihre befreiende und Solidarität stiftende Kraft entfalten. Eine Abwertung des Judentums als Bundesvolk ist damit prinzipiell unvereinbar. (shrink)

The search for an agreement between Aristotle’s and Descartes’ philosophy was aimed at making Cartesian physics acceptable in the Dutch universities by showing its consistency with Aristotelian thought. Their agreement is defended by Johannes De Raey in the Clavis philosophiae naturalis (1654), where he interprets the Corpus Aristotelicum from a Cartesian standpoint. Those Aristotelian positions which are inconsistent with Descartes’ are treated as erroneous. The Scholastic positions, moreover, are considered as distant from the true Aristotelian philosophy rediscovered by Descartes.

Der Theologe und Sozialphilosoph Johannes Messner (1891-1984) war einer der Vordenker der Christlichen Soziallehre. Seine "Kulturethik" liegt nun mit einer neuen Einleitung versehen als Reprint vor. Kultur bedeutet fur Messner entfaltetes Menschsein: Alles, was der Mensch schopferisch hervorbringt, was seiner Vollentfaltung dient, im Kunstlerischen, Handwerklichen, Wissenschaftlichen oder im Umwelt- und Freizeitbereich, weist kulturelle Ausdrucksformen auf. Kultur bedarf einer Ordnung, einer ethischen Fundierung. Messner kennzeichnet die Kultur als die mit unserer Vorstellungs- und Wertewelt in Generationen ubermittelte Lebensform: Die Tradition ist (...) von wesentlicher Bedeutung. Jeder Mensch hat eine Kulturchance. Die Gesellschaft soll moglichst allen Menschen eine Anteilnahme am kulturellen Leben sicherstellen, auch wenn sie noch so bescheiden sind. Messner spricht von einem kulturellen Existenzminimum; seine kulturethischen Ziele richten sich auf einen universalen sozialen Humanismus. (shrink)

This contribution investigates the logical and philosophical premises of the prevailing “static” conception of dignity, above all in the areas of prenatal human dignity, and contrasts this conception with a “dynamic” understanding of dignity. The author favours the attempt not of regarding the immanent indistinctiveness of the term “human dignity” as a problem of the legal order which necessarily ought to be eliminated, but rather of making this indistinctiveness itself useful and fertile for a “fluctuating” or fluid concept of dignity.The (...) above-mentioned indistinctiveness of human dignity demands a decision which reminds one that it is interwoven in a field of conceptual indistinctiveness.
