Quantum philosophy, a peculiar twentieth-century malady, is responsible for most of the conceptual muddle plaguing the foundations of quantum physics. When this philosophy is eschewed, one naturally arrives at Bohmian mechanics, which is what emerges from Schrodinger's equation for a nonrelativistic system of particles when we merely insist that 'particles' means particles. While distinctly non-Newtonian, Bohmian mechanics is a fully deterministic theory of particles in motion, a motion choreographed by the wave function. When the quantum formalism is regarded as arising in this way, the paradoxes and perplexities so often associated with quantum theory simply evaporate.Bohr's ... approach to atomic problems ... is really remarkable. He is completely convinced that any understanding in the usual sense of the word is impossible. It is well known that density matrices can be used in quantum mechanics to represent the information available to an observer about either a system with a random wave function (“statistical mixture”) or a system that is entangled with another system (“reduced density matrix”). We point out another role, previously unnoticed in the literature, that a density matrix can play: it can be the “conditional density matrix,” conditional on the configuration of the environment. A precise definition can be given in (...) the context of Bohmian mechanics, whereas orthodox quantum mechanics is too vague to allow a sharp definition, except perhaps in special cases. In contrast to statistical and reduced density matrices, forming the conditional density matrix involves no averaging. In Bohmian mechanics with spin, the conditional density matrix replaces the notion of conditional wave function, as the object with the same dynamical significance as the wave function of a Bohmian system. Bei der Suche nach der Antwort besprechen die Autoren unter anderem die modernen Quantentheorien, die von John Stuart Bell „Theorien ohne Beobachter“ genannt wurden: die Bohmsche Mechanik, die Kollaps-Theorie und die Viele-Welten-Theorie. -/- Neben zielgerichteten mathematischen Aussagen, die in Kursvorlesungen (...) selten vorkommen, erklärt das Buch anhand der neuen Theorien die Rolle der Wellenfunktion und des Zufalls in der Quantenmechanik. Insbesondere beschäftigen sich die Autoren auch mit der Gedankenwelt des Physikers John Stuart Bell, der mit den berühmten, aber leider oft missverstandenen Bellschen Ungleichungen unser physikalisches Weltbild nachhaltig verändert hat. Christian Lotz shows in this book that Husserl's Phenomenology and its key concept--subjectivity--is based on a concrete anthropological structure, such as self-affection and the bodily experience of the other. The analysis of the sensual sphere and the lived Body forces Husserl to an ongoing correction of his strong methodological assumptions. Subjectivity turns out to be an ambivalent phenomenon, as the subject is unable to fully present itself to itself, and therefore is forced to allow for a fundamental non-transparency in itself.

Hermann Lotze, der zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Philosophen des 19. Jahrhunderts zählt (und bis in die Zwanzigerjahre zu den meistdiskutierten gehörte), hat nicht nur den Neukantianismus und die Lebensphilosophie, sondern auch Husserls Phänomenologie und die frühe analytische Philosophie maßgeblich beeinflusst. Aufgrund seiner Doppelprofession als Philosoph und Mediziner steht Lotze im Zentrum der großen Transformationsbewegung im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs des 19. Jahrhunderts, die die Abtrennung der Wissenschaften von der idealistischen Philosophie und die Bemühung einer kritisch reflektierten Philosophie um Annäherung an die Erfahrungswissenschaften (...) mit sich brachte. Lotzes Einsicht, dass der Mensch nicht mehr im Mittelpunkt der Natur steht, sondern "dislociert" ist, weist in das Zentrum seines großen Werkes Mikrokosmos. Ideen zur Naturgeschichte und Geschichte der Menschheit (1856). Von ihm selbst in eine Linie mit Herders Ideen und A. v. Humboldts Kosmos-Schrift gestellt, liefert Mikrokosmos schon vor dem Erscheinen von Darwins Origin of Species (1859) eine hellsichtige Kritik des neuen Materialismus und der anthropologischen Grundproblematik unserer Epoche. Gegen den analytischen Geist in den Wissenschaften und gegen die Rastlosigkeit ihres Fortschritts hält er an der Vorstellung fest, dass jede Weltbeschreibung der Selbstdeutung des Menschen angemessen sein muss. Mit dem Begriff der "Dislocirung" wird auf den Punkt gebracht, was noch knapp hundert Jahre später die philosophische Anthropologie beschäftigen wird: Die Stellung des Menschen in der Natur ist fragwürdig geworden, innerhalb des Gesamtprozesses vom Leben gibt es keine eindeutige Position mehr für den Menschen. Human uterus transplantation (UTx)—the most radical and experimental of all current forms of assisted reproduction—gives rise to a range of complex ethical questions, including those related to individual safety, risk, and informed consent. I have argued elsewhere that the wider social impacts and implications of UTx provision must form part of a comprehensive ethical analysis. My socio‐moral critique of UTx provision has been responded to with a number of defences of possible public funding of UTx. In this paper I examine (...) a select number of those defences. These include: that UTx provision would address harms and needs that already exist and as such have priority; that UTx provision is fully compatible with the needed reform of the procreative context in which it would be offered; that UTx provision would not necessarily involve legitimation or endorsement of what are widely agreed to be problematic pronatalist or geneticist norms; and that UTx provision is required as a matter of justice and consistency with other practices. Importantly, defenders are not proposing a ceteris paribus justification of UTx provision; nor do my responses to their arguments represent a comprehensive opposition to UTx. Rather, my more limited purpose here is to show that whatever other defences may be given of publicly funded UTx provision, those considered here do not ultimately succeed and therefore do not allay the concerns underpinning the original socio‐moral critique. L’article présente un projet d’édition des OEuvres complètes du philosophe et satiriste allemand Salomo Friedlaender Mynona , entrepris en 2005. Partant de Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Goethe, Kant et Ernst Marcuse, le philosophe a développé les raisons fondamentales de « l’indifférence créatrice » et d’une polarité spécifique non romantique vers une étude philosophique approfondie. Installé à Berlin à partir de 1902, Friedlaender se trouvait au coeur des courants philosophiques et littéraires du XXe siècle – l’expressionnisme et le dadaïsme. Pacifiste déterminé et kantien (...) à l’heure de la Première guerre mondiale et de la République de Weimar, il a formulé dans ses satires populaires, les grotesques, une critique sévère de la culture en attirant l’attention, avec insistance, sur l’utopie pratique de la paix éternelle. En raison des circonstances difficiles – émigration à Paris en 1933 – et d’un malheureux hasard, il est tombé dans l’oubli. Grâce à cette nouvelle édition, dans le cadre de laquelle devraient paraître trente volumes dans les années à venir, il sera présenté au public à sa juste valeur. (shrink)

Im Ausgang von Schopenhauer und Nietzsche, Goethe, Kant und Ernst Marcus entwickelte er die Grundmotive der ,schöpferischen Indifferenz’ und eines spezifischen Polarismus zu einer originalen und tiefen philosophischen Lehre. Seit 1902 in Berlin lebend, stand er im Zentrum maßgebender philosophischer und literarischer Entwicklungen des 20. Jahrhunderts ; er war ein entschiedener Pazifist und Kantianer, der zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges und der (...) Weimarer Republik auch in seinen populären Satiren scharfe Kulturkritik formulierte und nachdrücklich auf die praktische Utopie des ewigen Friedens hinwies. Durch widrige Umstände und böse Zufälle geriet er unverdienterweise in eine fatale Vergessenheit. Mit dieser Edition, deren etwa 30 Bände in den nächsten Jahren erscheinen sollen, wird er endlich in das Licht gebracht, das ihm gebührt. (shrink)

Detlef Breitenband gibt in seinem Buch einen problemorientierten Überblick über die Rechtstheorien von Immanuel Kant und Jürgen Habermas. Im Zentrum steht die Frage nach der Leistungsfähigkeit beider Rechtstheorien, da diese den Konsens aller Rechtsadressaten zur Grundlage haben, aber nicht davon ausgegangen wird, dass jemals über eine Rechtsnorm ein faktischer Konsens erzeugt wird. Der Autor arbeitet die radikal-demokratischen Implikationen des Kantischen Republikanismus heraus und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Klärung des Begriffs der Legitimation von Rechtsnormen.
