The most perfect natural laboratory in the world: Making and knowing Hawaii National Park.Ashanti Shih - 2019 - History of Science 57 (4):493-517.
This article reimagines the meanings of U.S. national parks and so-called ‘natural’ places in our environmental histories and histories of science. Environmental historians have created a compelling narrative about the creation and use of U.S. national parks as places for recreation and natural resource conservation. Although these motivations were undoubtedly significant, I argue that some of the early parks were created and used for a third, often overlooked, reason: to preserve a permanent, state-sanctioned space for scientific knowledge production. Deconstructing the (...)

    Lü-Shih Ch'un-Ch'iu is A Reaction Against Shang Yang's Reforms.Shih Chung - 1976 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 7 (4):21-34.
Lü-shih ch'un-ch'iu [Spring and Autumn of the House of Lü] appeared on the scene in 239 B.C. This was the latter part of the Warring States period. Our country's transition from slavery to feudalism had already been basically completed, but chaotic wars of secession among the feudal princes still occurred. Remnant forces of the slave system were still quite strong, and the restoration-counterrestoration struggle between the declining slave-owning class and the newly emerging landlord class was proceeding violently. Lü Pu-wei (...)

Corporate Social Irresponsibility and Executive Succession: An Empirical Examination.Shih-Chi Chiu & Mark Sharfman - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 149 (3):707-723.
This study contributes to the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder theory, and executive succession literature by examining the effect of corporate social irresponsibility on strategic leadership turnover. We theorize that firms’ CSiR increases the likelihood of executive turnover. We also investigate the nature of succession and successor origin following CSiR. We further examine how the CSiR–CEO succession relationship is moderated by firm visibility to stakeholders and industry dynamism. Our results, based on a dataset of 248 U.S. public firms between 2001 and (...)

Taiwanese College Students’ Perceptions of Plagiarism: Cultural and Educational Considerations.Shih-Chieh Chien - 2017 - Ethics and Behavior 27 (2):118-139.
The present study investigates Taiwanese college students’ perceptions of plagiarism. Specifically, this study seeks to explore how perceptive students pursuing higher education in Taiwan are in recognizing plagiaristic writing, in what terms they perceive source use in writing as appropriate and inappropriate, and view why plagiarism occurs. The study included 30 high- and 30 low-achieving students selected out of 396 students in English writing classes at a university in Taiwan. Drawing upon evidence from a writing exercise and individual interviews with (...)

Hegelian phenomenology and robotics.Donald S. Borrett, David Shih, Michael Tomko, Sarah Borrett & Hon C. Kwan - 2011 - International Journal of Machine Consciousness 3 (01):219-235.
A formalism is developed that treats a robot as a subject that can interpret its own experience rather than an object that is interpreted within our experience. A regulative definition of a meaningful experience in robots is proposed in which the present sensible experience is considered meaningful to the agent, as the subject of the experience, if it can be related to the agent's temporal horizons. This definition is validated by demonstrating that such an experience in evolutionary autonomous agents is (...)

Transitions in decision-making authority at the end of life: a problem of law, ethics and practice in deceased donation.Shih-Ning Then & Dominique E. Martin - 2022 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (2):112-117.
Where a person is unable to make medical decisions for themselves, law and practice allows others to make decisions on their behalf. This is common at the end of a person’s life where decision-making capacity is often lost. A further, and separate, decision that is often considered at the time of death (and often preceding death) is whether the person wanted to act as an organ or tissue donor. However, in some jurisdictions, the lawful decision-maker for the donation decision (the (...)

Animal Welfare.Shih Chaohwei & Peter Singer - 2018 - The Harvard Review of Philosophy 25:169-181.
This piece is an edited transcript of a dialogue between Professor Shih Chaohwei of Hsuan Chuang University in Taiwan and Professor Peter Singer of Princeton University in the United States and the University of Melbourne in Australia. The dialogue features considerations of various points of interaction between the Buddhist and utilitarian perspectives on animals. We hope that this conversation can serve to open a dialogue between seemingly very different philosophical traditions with regards to the treatment of animals.

Characteristics Of Social Change And Philosophical Thought During The Ch'Un-Ch'Iu Period.Kuan Feng & Lin Lü-Shih - 1970 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 2 (1):80-112.
Ths historical legacy inherited by thinkers of the Ch'un-ch'iu period comprised, briefly speaking: a religious world outlook characterized by ancestor worship; the ethical concept of filial piety and brotherliness, which was linked to ancestor worship, or derived therefrom; the concept of a ritual system; the conditions of aristocratic politics and scholar bureaucracy. These were things shaped on the basis of the blood ties in a patriarchal and racial society, and they were passive, from the standpoint of progress, being the obstacle (...)

  43. Conceptions of intelligence in ancient Chinese philosophy.Shih-Ying Yang & Robert J. Sternberg - 1997 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 17 (2):101-119.
Ancient Chinese philosophical conceptions of intelligence differ markedly from those in the ancient Western tradition, and also from contemporary Western conceptions. Understanding these ancient Chinese conceptions of intelligence may help us better understand how a very important culture—Chinese culture—influences people's thinking and behavior, and may also help us broaden, deepen, as well as re-examine our own conceptions of intelligence. This article reviews two ancient Chinese conceptions of intelligence–the Confucian and Taoist– and discusses their ramifications for current thinking about intelligence and (...)

Climate change and the ecological intelligence of Confucius.Shih-yu Kuo - 2011 - Journal of Global Ethics 7 (2):185 - 194.
Confucius is conventionally regarded as the founder of secular humanism and as a philosopher concerned about humans and culture. I would add to this that Confucius should also be read as an environmental philosopher. One reason is the pedagogical dimension in Confucianism, which points to Confucius as an environmental educator ? not the least of which since much of environmental education relies on common sense and an enlightened collective self-interest. Another reason is an aspect I call ?ecological intelligence?, which is (...)
