Mulla Sadrā refers to ancient Greek philosophers in his writings quite often, especially when the subject matter is the soul. In this article, I will address how Mulla Sadra reiterates Avicenna’s summary and analyses of ancient theories of the soul as discussed in Safar 4, Bab 5, and Fasl 5 of, al-Hikmat al-Mutaʿāliya fi asfār al-ʿaqliyyat al-arbaʿa. The source of these discussions, when the structure and basic contents are considered, is Aristotle’s De Anima Book I. Before defining the soul, Aristotle (...) discusses what kind of a science, a science on the soul should be, and afterwards, he evaluates previous theories on the soul as those defining the soul through movement, perception, and life. We observe that this evaluation on previous theories play a preparatory role for his own definition of the soul as perfection and actualization. In a similar manner, in Safar 4, Bab 5, and Fasl 5 of Asfār al-aqliyyat al-arbaʿa, Mulla Sadrā reinterprets and discusses Ancient theories in such a way that the discussion leads us to a theory similar to Mulla Sadrā’s. In the presentation of this chapter, we find out that the soul is immaterial and modulated (tashkīkī) reality and is represented as a unity which is in a constant movement in its substance. The soul is matter in its origin, yet turns into an immaterial reality through substantial movement. In direct disagreement with Aristotelian philosophy, for Mulla Sadrā, movement in substance is possible as well as it is essential in understanding the reality of the soul. When Mulla Sadrā evaluates the ancient discussions and the criticisms by Avicenna, he finds that the discussion focuses on the source of mobility yet the soul is supposed to be defined as the source of immobility equally. Next in the discussion on movement, he focuses on the necessity of accepting the principle of substantial movement. According to Mulla Sadrā, Avicenna (following Aristotle’s presentation and interpretation) is misleading in his evaluation and criticisms of the ancient theories on the soul mainly because he follows a literalist reading. On the contrary, sources for Ancients’ knowledge is perennial wisdom, and their words on the soul have deeper meanings than what is understood at the first reading. When read with more trustful lenses, it will be manifested that the soul is an immaterial reality for them as well. For example, when they talk about the soul as a sphere, Mulla Sadrā thinks that they want to direct attention to the perfection. When fire is mentioned, the dynamic reality of the soul is brought to light. Mulla Sadrā, adds the principle of gradation (tashkīk) to his presentation and talks about modulation of fire from material fire to the immaterial light (nūr).The lowest level of fire is related to the changes in nature of the soul, the soul responsible of irascible and concupiscent establishes the next level. Once the soul is under total control, then it completes the passage to its incorporeality and becomes light. So this chapter is important in its structure because it allows us to read into how Sadrā’s historical reiteration is influenced by his own theoretical framework on the one hand. On the other hand, thanks to the long lineage of De Anima commentary literature, we can compare Sadrā with Aristotelian readings in this chapter. The interpretative reading of Mulla Sadrā, in opposition to the literalist reading of Avicenna on the ancient theories, also leans on a history of other philosophers before him. In this regard, a lineage of historiography might be traced back to Āmirī, Qādi Saʿīd, and Shahristāni. What the article comes to conclude is that a particular presentation found in Aristotles’ De Anima- Book I is molded in Mulla Sadrā’s hands with a more interpretative version of pre-Socratic theories to such an extent to support Mulla Sadra’s own theories on the soul. Bu manastırlarda keşiş ve rahibeler evharistiya ve günlük ibadetler gibi ayinlerde bir araya gelmekte, ancak günün geri kalan zamanlarında kendi bölümlerinde yaşamaktadır. Hıristiyanlığın erken dönemlerinde özellikle Mısır’da ortaya çıkan bu manastırlar, 6. ve 9. yüzyıllar arasında İngiltere, İrlanda ve Fransa’da yaygınlaşmıştır. Bu manastırlar erkek ve kadınların bir arada yaşamaları nedeniyle farklı konsillerle yasaklansa da Ortaçağ’ın geç dönemlerine kadar varlıklarını sürdürmüşlerdir. Konsil kararları ve (...) istilalar nedeniyle artık örneklerine rastlanmasa da İngiltere’de Ortodoks Kilisesine bağlı bir çifte manastır bulunmaktadır. Diğer taraftan günümüzde Hıristiyanlıkta çifte manastırlarda tarihte yaşanan ortak yaşamdan örnekler verilerek yeni bir cinsiyet paradigması oluşturma çalışmaları görülmektedir. Dolayısıyla çifte manastırlar Kilise, kadın ve otorite gibi konuları kapsamı bakımından önemli bir konudur. Çalışmada bu manastırların yapıları, etkileri, problemleri ve tarihsel süreci ele alınmıştır. Makalenin Kilise, kadın, manastır hayatı ve Hıristiyan mistisizmi gibi çalışmalara kaynaklık teşkil etmesi beklenmektedir. (shrink)

Stem cell policy in the United States is an amalgam of federal and state policies. The scientific development of human pluripotent embryonic stem cells triggered a contentious national stem cell policy debate during the administration of President George W. Bush. The Bush “compromise” that allowed federal funding to study only a very limited number of ESC derived cell lines did not satisfy either the researchers or the patient advocates who saw great medical potential being stifled. Neither more restrictive legislation nor (...) expansion of federal funding proved politically possible and the federal impasse opened the door for a variety of state-based experiments. In 2004, California became the largest and most influential state venture into stem cell research by passing “Prop 71,” a voter initiative that created a new stem cell agency and funded it with $3 billion. Several states followed suit with similar programs to protect the right of investigators to do stem cell research and in some cases to invest state funding in such projects. Other states devised legislation to restrict stem cell research and in five states, criminal penalties were included. Thus, the US stem cell policy is a patchwork of multiple, often conflicting, state and federal policies. (shrink)

İslam düşüncesinde dillerin ortaya çıkışı konusu, dilbilimsel çalışma ve tartışmaların büyük bir bölümünü oluşturmuştur. Bu tartışmalarda en büyük pay usul ve kelâm âlimlerine aittir. Müslümanlar, dillerin ortaya çıkmasıyla ilgili iki teori öne sürmüşlerdir: Birincisi, tevkîf teorisidir. Buna göre dil ilahi bir mevhibe olup insana Allah tarafından öğretilmiştir. Çok kadim olan bu teori Yunan filozofları tarafından da savunulmuştur. İkinci teori ise tevfîk teorisidir. Bu teorinin sahipleri dilin toplumsal uzlaşı ile doğduğunu öngörürler. Bu teoriyi savunanların çoğu, delillerini aklî temele dayandıran Muʻtezile’ye mensup (...) olup metinleri kendi görüşlerine uygun bir şekilde yorumlamışlardır. Bazı âlimler ise bu iki teoriyi uzlaştırmaya çalışmışlardır. Buna göre Cenâb-ı Hak, insana kavram üretme yeteneği vermiş ve bunun için uygun mekanizmalar bahşetmiştir. Fakat yine de dilin ilk kökeninin tevkîfî olması gerekir ki sonradan insan dili gelişim gösterebilsin. Kādî Abdülcebbâr bu konuda farklı bir görüş ortaya atar. Ona göre ilk dil tevkîfî olamaz tam aksine Allah'ın hitabını anlamamız için tevfîkî olması gerekir. Allah'ın insana anladığı bir dille hitap etmesi gerektiği deliline istinaden, Kādî Abdülcebbâr bu teoriyi savunmuştur. Yukarıdaki tartışma dilin ilk kökeni ile ilgilidir. İlk dilden sonra gelen dillere gelince, Kādî Abdülcebbâr onların çıkışı hakkında kesin bir şey söylemez. Yani hem tevkîfî olabilir hem de tevfîkî olma ihtimali mevcuttur. Bu iki ihtimalin hiçbirini destekleyecek bir delil yoktur. Kādî Abdülcebbâr, Allah'ın iradesini anlamak için öngördüğü bu durumun nasıl olması gerektiğini bir örnekle açıklıyor. O, öncelikle bir kelimenin bir lafzı ifade-işaret etmesi gerektiğini ve bunun da mutlaka belli bir maksat için konulmuş olması gerektiğini savunur. İsim, konulduğu şeye niyete bir gayeye uygun olarak işaret etmelidir. Modern dilbilimde ise, yukarıdaki iki teori haricinde birkaç teori daha ortaya atılmıştır. Modern dilbilim kitaplarında büyük yer tutan ve on sekizinci yüzyılın sonunda ortaya çıkan ilk dilin kökeni teorisi; dilin insan türünün özel bir içgüdüsünden kaynaklandığını belirten ve onun doğuştan geldiğini savunan teoridir. Yani insanda, her duyusal ve ahlaki algısını bir kelime ile ifade etmesini sağlayan bir fıtratı vardır. Modern teorilerden biri de, kelimelerin ilk oluşumunun insanın duyduğu doğal sesleri taklit etmesiyle ortaya çıktığını ve bu seslerin kaynağının onlardan isimler türetmeye yönelttiğini savunan taklit teorisidir. Bu çalışmada Kādî Abdülcebbâr’ın dilin kökenine dair özgün teorisi ve teorisini desteklemek için ortaya koyduğu akli deliller ele alınmaktadır. (shrink)

Öz: Semantik çalışmalarının tarihi çok öncelere dayandırılmasına rağmen esas IXX. Yüzyılda gündeme alınmaya başlanmıştır. Semantiğin öncüsü olarak da Ferdinand de Saussure’ü göstermemiz mümkündür. Onun özellikle gösterge kuramı bağlamında anlamın oluşmasını anlattığı çalışması bizim makalemizin de bel kemiğini oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Saussure’ün gösterge kuramından hareketle Allah’ın Hâlik isminin semantik anlamının verilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bunun için öncelikle klasik kelamda kelimeye verilen anlamları ortaya koyulup daha sonra da ayetler üzerinden Hâlik ismine semantik anlam verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Böylece kelimeye tarihsel olarak yüklenen anlam ile semantik analizle (...) ortaya çıkarılan orijinal anlam farkı gösterilecektir. Bilindiği gibi bu tartışma art süremli ve eş süremli anlam teorileri üzerinden analiz edilmektedir. Biz de bu yöntemi takip ettik. (shrink)

Ortaçağ İslam Dünyasında yöneten ve yönetilenler arasındaki bağı âlimler sağlamaktaydı. Sultan ve emirin halka adaletle muamele etmesini, Kuran-ı Kerim ve Sünnet-i Şerife göre yaşamasını ve toplumsal hayatı düzenlemesine yardımcı olurdu. Zaman içerisinde yöneticilerde görülen kusurların ortaya konulmasına yönelik çözüm önerileri sunan âlimler, eserler kaleme almaya başlamış ve bu eserlere siyasetname ve nasihatname denilmeye başlanmıştır. Bu eserlerden bazıları gayet hacimli olup sultana arz edilmekteydiler. Bazısı ise risale şeklinde ve daha kısa yazılarak toplumun huzurunu bozan veya toplumda çok acil çözülmesi gereken (...) unsurları ihtiva etmekteydi. Selçukluların XI. Yüzyıldan itibaren İslam Dünyasına geniş bir hâkimiyet sahası oluşturmaları üzerine siyasetname telifi artmıştı. XIII. Yüzyıl hadis âlimlerinden Ziyâeddin el-Makdîsî’nin yaşadığı Eyyubiler Dönemine kadar bu eser yazım türü yaygınlık kazanmıştır. El-Makdisî, Dimaşk Eyyubî meliki el-Melikü’l-Eşref Musâ’nın düşkün bir hayat sürmesi üzerine özellikle toplumda bozulmalar meydana gelmesi ve devlet yönetiminde zaafa düşülmesi gibi sebeplerle bir nasihatname yazmış ve halkın üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri azaltmayı gaye edinmiştir. Nasihatname sultanın konumuna uygun, yumuşak bir dille ve nazik bir üslupla kaleme alınmış olup eserde ayet ve sahih hadislere yer verilmiştir. (shrink)

L'on ne saurait trop souligner combien l'âge "classique" est un âge critique. Traditionally, analytic philosophy has been affiliated with a formalist conception of inference which understands reasoning as a process that exploits syntactic properties of natural language according to a set of formal rules that are insensitive to conceptual content. This chapter discusses an alternative approach that takes semantic properties as the underlying forces driving rational inference. Building on Wilfird Sellars’ notion of material inference and analytic tools from cognitive linguistics, I will show how parts of the inferential structure of natural language (...) can be explained in terms of semantic relations between extra-logical concepts. In the end, I will outline a strategy for explicating some of these inference-types using Peter Gärdenfors’ theory of conceptual spaces. (shrink)

A quoi nous conduisent inexorablement le relativisme et le pluralisme des valeurs ? A la guerre, l’actualité ne cesse de nous le confirmer. Elle peut être évitée, s’il est possible d’élever les valeurs à la vérité, seule en mesure d’apporter la concorde entre les êtres humains. C’est cette fondation rationnelle des valeurs, qui ne doit évidemment pas être métaphysique, qui est ici tentée. Mais vouloir fonder rationnellement des valeurs, n’est-ce pas œuvrer à l’établissement d’une dictature morale ? Non, dès lors (...) que ces valeurs se ramènent à la liberté. On peut craindre cependant que valoriser la liberté revienne à défendre l’égoïsme du système libéral. Ce n’est pas le cas si la liberté signifie le gouvernement responsable de soi-même. Reste à s’assurer de l’existence et de la valeur d’une telle liberté. L’enjeu est de taille : il s’agit de savoir s’il y a un sens à promouvoir le gouvernement responsable de soi-même ainsi que le respect d’autrui et de la nature, plutôt que l’intérêt et l’égoïsme. La dialectique pour penser la non-linéarité, le complexe pensé dialectiquement : une nouvelle révolution paradigmatique ? Le débat est ouvert.

L’humanité a inventé environ 12 000 types différents d’instruments de musique, chacun exprimant une facette de l’imagination humaine. Mais on s’étonne que de ce que la philosophie néglige cet objet, dont se sont emparés acousticiens, musicologues, ethnomusicologues et historiens. Relevant le défi d’une exploration philosophique, Bernard Sève défend la thèse originale de la « condition organologique de la musique » : la musique n’est complètement elle-même que lorsqu’elle se sert d’instruments ; la musique, d’une certaine façon, « commence » avec (...) l’instrument. Mais à condition d’ajouter que l’instrument n’est rien sans l’instrumentiste qui le met en œuvre. On peut alors distinguer deux corps de l’instrument : son corps physique, qui peut produire toutes sortes de bruits, et son corps musical, qui ne produit que les sons musicaux voulus ; réciproquement, le musicien qui apprend à jouer d’un instrument transforme son corps physique naturel en corps musicien. Bernard Sève étudie enfin les rapports entre l’instrument et le temps et propose une ontologie de l’œuvre musicale dans laquelle l’instrument joue un rôle essentiel. L’instrument de musique n’est totalement lui-même que lorsqu’il joue, et l’œuvre musicale n’est totalement elle-même que lorsqu’elle est effectivement jouée. Et la musique est le seul art dont les instruments sont utilisés tout au long de la réalisation de l’œuvre : une fois la toile achevée, le peintre n’a plus besoin de son pinceau, mais, la partition terminée, le musicien a plus que jamais besoin des instruments...
