Background: Food biofortification practices in agricultural sectors involve the process of employing biotechnology to enhance the nutritional content of crops during their growth process. Biofortification makes foods even more nutritious and highly functional for addressing malnutrition among children. These practices in farming industries need guidance and legal support from various national policies to support high-quality supplies of school meals fully. Aim: This study aims to analyze the association between various national policies and the implementation of food biofortification practices in agricultural (...) sectors among countries implementing school meal programs. Methods: The Bayesian Mindsponge Framework, combining the reasoning strengths of Mindsponge Theory and inference advantages of Bayesian analysis, was employed on a dataset of 126 government representatives who manage large-scale school meal programs in 126 different countries. Results: Findings showed that food safety policy was positively associated with food biofortification practices in agricultural sectors among countries implementing school meal programs. In contrast, nutrition policy had a significant negative association with these practices. Additionally, policies of school feeding, health, agriculture, and the private sector had unclear associations with food biofortification. Conclusions: Findings underscore the strong position of food safety policy in guiding food biofortification practices in agricultural sectors among countries implementing school meal programs. There is a need to re-assess the implemented nutrition policy due to its significant negative association with these practices. Enhancing and strengthening the policies of school feeding, health, agriculture, and the private sector may increase their potencies in giving positive impacts on food biofortification practices in agricultural sectors to ensure high-quality school meal supplies. Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth performance and carcass characteristics of the Bonga sheep supplemented with noug seed cake (NSC; Guizotia abyssinica) with dried mulberry leaf meal (DMLM; Morus indica) and higher protein Vernonia amygdalina leaf (DVLM) meal mixtures maintained on Desho (Penisetum glaucifolium) grass hay ad libitum. The five experimental diets were 100% NSC (T1), 75% DMLM+25% DVLM (T2), 100% DMLM (T3), 50% DVLM+25% NSC (T4) and 100% DVLM (T5). Thirty lambs at the age (...) of eight months with an initial body weight (BW) 15.63±1.4 kg were assigned in randomised complete block design with six replications to each experimental diet. The intake of crude protein, ash, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent lignin were significantly (P<0.0001) different for animals fed T2, and dry matter intake (DMI), total dry matter intake (TDMI), total dry matter intake as % of body weight (TDMI %BW) and total dry matter intake of metabolic body weight was relatively higher for T3 (P<0.0001). There was a significant (P<0.05) effect on slaughter body weight among treatments which was higher for sheep fed T2 and T3, at 25.7 kg each. There was no effect (P>0.05) on other carcass traits, edible or non-edible offal components. Total DMI was strongly and positively correlated with carcass traits and crude protein intake was positively correlated with body weight. Total replacement with DMLM and the mix of 75% DMLM + 25% NSC with Desho grass hay can be used to give better growth performance and carcass yield of lambs. -/- . (shrink)

We aimed at evaluating the best unsaturated fatty acid candidate (vegetable oil) for blending (dry matter-DM basis) with cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) to improve feed intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, growth, and carcass traits in sheep. Forty uncastrated male Santa Ines × Dorper crossbred sheep (n = 8/treatment) weighting 24.44 ± 1.5 kg were used. Animals were randomly assigned to a completely randomized design and received one of the following treatments: a control group consisting of a blend of phenolic lipids (CNSL (...) at 0.5%) and canola oil (a monounsaturated fatty acid source, MUFA, at 1.5%), and four treatment groups with CNSL (0.5%) combined with 1.5% of a high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) vegetable oil (corn, soybean, sunflower, or cottonseed oil), as DM basis. Feeding sheep with CNSL + canola oil resulted in higher SFA, UFA, and MUFA and lower PUFA’s (P < 0.05) intakes. The TDN intake was lower for the CNSL + corn oil diet than the other oils (P < 0.0001). The DM and NDF digestibility were higher for CNSL + cottonseed oil (PUFA) or canola oil (MUFA) diets than other oils (P < 0.05). The CNSL + soybean oil blend promoted a lower urinary N excretion (P = 0.047) in sheep. Growth and carcass traits were not affected by the oil’s composition in the blends. The level of saturation was confirmed as such a determining factor in the DM and NDF digestibility since the oil containing the highest concentration of MUFA (canola oil) showed better digestibility compared to other PUFA-rich oils; however, without effect on the performance and feed efficiency of the sheep. The objective of this study was to evaluate lipid sources, associated with spineless cactus or not, as a strategy for reducing feed costs in goat milk production. Twelve lactating Saanen goats, with an average body weight of 55.0±8.0kg, were distributed in a 4x4 Latin square, with a 2x2 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of two lipid sources (coconut peels - CP; and cottonseed - CT), associated or not with “Orelha de Elefante Mexicana” (OEM) spineless cactus. Goats that consumed diets containing (...) cottonseed as the main source of energy showed higher performance indexes (P<0.05). The CP+OEM treatment presented the lowest cost for 1 kg of dry matter (R$ 1.78). The PC diet demonstrated lower daily feeding costs (R$ 2.54). Total revenue was higher for the CT+OEM diet (R$ 8.17), as was net income (R$ 4.19). Therefore, the association of cottonseed with OEM spineless cactus in the feeding of lactating goats is recommended, due to the reduction in feeding costs, especially with roughage, in addition to superior performance, contributing to greater profitability of the activity. As water scarcity intensifies globally, understanding how different agricultural systems contribute to food production and water use is crucial. A recent global study by Su et al. [3] sheds new light on this by comparing nutrient output and water consumption between small- and large-scale farms using a high-resolution, process-based crop model across 55 countries.

Resumo: O estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a produtividade e indicadores econômicos de cordeiros da raça Santa Inês ou mestiços Dorper x Santa Inês terminados em confinamento com dieta à base de palma forrageira. Foram utilizados 16 cordeiros não castrados, sendo oito da raça Santa Inês e oito mestiços Dorper x Santa Inês (87,5% Dorper + 12,5% Santa Inês). A idade média no início da pesquisa foi de 150 dias ± 7,28 e o peso vivo médio foi de 24,28 kg (...) ± 3,45 no início do experimento. Foi utilizada ração única formulada para ganho de peso médio esperado de 200 g/dia. A palma forrageira utilizada foi Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia stricta HAW) IV e o feno de capim-buffel (Cenchrus ciliares). O período experimental foi de 58 dias, sendo precedido de nove dias para adaptação dos animais às instalações e à ração, totalizando 67 dias. Os dados das variáveis estudadas foram submetidos à análise de variância, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 8 repetições por tratamento, utilizando-se o teste F para comparação dos quadrados médios dos fatores testados. Os cordeiros consumiram quantidades semelhantes de matéria natural e de matéria seca, porém os cordeiros mestiços da raça Dorper registraram maior consumo de água, ganho de peso total e ganho de peso médio diário. Não houve efeito do grupo genético sobre a conversão alimentar e o escore de condição corporal. A margem de lucro bruto foi maior em 59,65% para os cordeiros mestiços em relação aos da raça Santa Inês. Os cordeiros mestiços apresentaram maior produtividade e melhor resultado econômico. A palma forrageira pode ser incluída em alta proporção na composição de dieta destinada à terminação de cordeiros. Palavras-chave: cactácea; cordeiro confinado; desempenho; margem de lucro bruto. Abstract: This study evaluated the productivity and economic indicators of Santa Inês and Dorper ×Santa Inês crossbred lambs finished in confinement on a forage cactus-based diet. Sixteen uncastrated lambs were used: eight purebred Santa Inês and eight Dorper × Santa Inês crossbreds (87.5% Dorper + 12.5% Santa Inês). At the onset of the experiment, lambs averaged 150 ± 7.28 days old and weighed 24.28 ± 3.45 kg. A single ration was formulated for an expected average weight gain of 200 g/day. The forage cactus used was Mexican Elephant Ear (Opuntia stricta HAW), and the hay was buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris). The experimental period lasted 58 days, following a 9-day adaptation period, totaling 67 days. Data were subjected to analysis of variance in a completely randomized design with eight replicates per treatment, using the F-test to compare mean squares. Lambs consumed similar amounts of fresh and dry matter, but Dorper crossbred lambs had higher water consumption, total weight gain, and average daily weight gain. The genetic group had no effect on feed conversion and body condition score. The gross profit was 59.65% higher for the crossbred lambs compared to the Santa Inês breed. Crossbred lambs showed higher productivity and better economic results. Forage cactus can be included in high proportions in diets for finishing lambs. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the quality of the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle in young suckling rams of the Kamieniec breed administered a probiotic preparation. Beginning at 11 days of age, lambs in the experimental group received an aqueous solution of the tested probiotic (Lactobacillus plantarum - 2 serotypes, Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactobacillus raminosus) per os for 30 days. The dose of the probiotic was adjusted for lamb age: 11–20 days - 1 g, 21–30 (...) days - 2 g, 31–40 days - 3 g. The viable count per g of the probiotic was 109 CFU. At the end of the experiment, lambs of the control (C, n = 6) and experimental (E, n = 6) groups were slaughtered, and samples of their LTL muscles were subjected to analyses. In group E, the LTL muscle had a lower (P ≤ 0.05) pH value, and a lower (P ≤ 0.05) contribution of yellowness (b*) to the color. A sensory analysis of lamb meat in group E revealed its lower (P ≤ 0.05) juiciness, and a tendency (P > 0.05) towards higher desirability of aroma and taste, lower intensity of these attributes, and higher tenderness. In group E, intra - muscular fat (IMF) was characterized by higher (P ≤ 0.05) proportions of fatty acid C18:1 cis9 and total MUFAs, a higher (P ≤ 0.05) MUFA/SFA ratio, and higher (P ≤ 0.05) nutritional value. In group C, IMF had higher (P ≤ 0.05) concentrations of fatty acids C18:3 and C20:1. The results of this study indicate that 30-day supplementation with the tested probiotic improves meat quality in very young lambs of the Kamieniec breed. (shrink)

(2025) evaluate the outcomes of 24 peer-reviewed studies—including 17 that experimentally compare ROAg with conventional practices—to assess how ROAg influences soil health and its capacity to support vital ecosystem services.

Despite the large number of sheep in Ethiopia, their productivity remains low, mainly due to inadequate and poor-quality feed. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplements on the growth performance and carcass yield indices of indigenous sheep in Ethiopia. This study included a total of 21 studies that used 533 sheep from 11 breeds. We used Meta-Essentials Version 1.5 to determine the effect sizes in a mixed-effects model at p < 0.05. (...) The current meta-analyses revealed that dietary supplements had a positive and significant effect (p of Z ≤ 0.001) on the total dry matter intake (Hedges' g = 6.84 g/day/head), final body weight (Hedges' g = 3.65 kg/head), average daily gain (Hedges' g = 3.59 g/head), feed conversion efficiency (Hedges' g = 0.72 g/g), slaughter weight (Hedges' g = 2.56 kg/head) and hot carcass (Hedges' g = 2.73 kg/head) of sheep compared to the control. The meta-analysis suggests that sheep of different breeds and sexes that were fed supplemental diets responded differently. In addition, the subgroup analysis declared that dietary supplementation of legumes resulted in a higher magnitude of effect sizes for all response variables in sheep in comparison to sheep supplemented with concentrate and browse. We detected diverse heterogeneity across studies for all response variables that ranged between 0% and 96.65%. It can be concluded that dietary supplements had a positive and significant impact on feed efficiency, growth performance and carcass yield in indigenous sheep, particularly Afar sheep, followed by Arsi Bale and Washera sheep, in Ethiopia. A portion of the dietary nutrients is excreted due to the presence of antinutritional factors in some ingredients. This study aimed to determine the total and ileal digestibility coefficients of crude protein, as well as the passage rate of diets with different chemical compositions, supplemented or not with an enzymatic complex, in broiler chickens. No effect of the enzymatic complex was observed on the crude protein digestibility coefficient (P>0.05). However, the ileal digestibility coefficients of crude protein showed significant differences (P<0.05) (...) within each group (with or without enzyme supplementation). The control treatment with the enzymatic complex presented a lower ileal digestibility coefficient of crude protein (P<0.05) compared to the control treatment without supplementation. The passage rate did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). It was concluded that the inclusion of the enzymatic complex, composed of calcium carbonate, Yucca extract, protease, phytase, and cellulase, in vegetable-based diets for broiler chickens did not affect digestibility coefficients or passage rate. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o impacto de três estratégias de suplementação na fase de recria de novilhas criadas a pasto durante as águas. O objetivo foi determinar a influência dessas dietas no ganho de peso e na eficiência alimentar em sistemas extensivos. O experimento foi conduzido na forma de parcelas subdivididas no tempo 4x3. As parcelas foram constituídas dos dias de experimentação (0, 15, 30 e 45 dias) e as subparcelas por três suplementações (Dieta Total (DT), Blond 200 (BD) (...) e Mineral UP (MU)), com 18 blocos. Não houve interação entre os dias de experimentação e os tipos de suplementação para o ganho de peso dos animais, mas houve para o ganho de peso médio diário (GMD). Houve ajuste quadrático para o peso das novilhas e para o GMD. Os períodos estudados indicaram redução do GMD em torno dos 30 dias de suplementação. As novilhas suplementadas com DT apresentaram o melhor desempenho, iniciando com 258,94 kg e atingindo 303,72 kg após 45 dias, com um ganho total de 44,78 kg e GMD de 0,995 kg/dia. No tratamento MU, os animais passaram de 262,66 kg para 293,33 kg, resultando em um ganho de 30,67 kg e um GMD de 0,682 kg/dia. Já as novilhas do tratamento BD começaram com 256,16 kg e finalizaram com 281,44 kg, totalizando um ganho de 25,28 kg e um GMD de 0,562 kg/dia. Além dos parâmetros de peso, analisaram-se os scores de fezes e de cocho. A DT apresentou escore de fezes de 3,02, mais próximo do ideal, enquanto BD e MU obtiveram valores de 2,90 e 2,91, respectivamente. Quanto ao score de cocho, DT registrou 2,01, indicando ingestão completa e maior saciedade, ao passo que BD e MU apresentaram scores mais altos (2,69 e 2,66), sugerindo menor eficiência na ingestão alimentar. Os resultados indicam que a suplementação com Dieta Total foi a mais eficaz para otimizar o ganho de peso. Já os tratamentos BD e MU, apesar de apresentarem pontos positivos, não proporcionaram o mesmo nível de desempenho. (shrink)

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da terminação de cordeiros confinados usando resíduo úmido de cervejaria como fonte de volumoso ofertado em diferentes frequências de alimentação sobre as características da carcaça e não componentes da carcaça. Foram utilizados 30 cordeiros machos não castrados, oriundos de um cruzamento alternado entre as raças Texel e Ile de France. Os animais apresentaram ao início do confinamento idade média de 72,7±6 dias e peso médio de 25,44±4,1 kg. Os tratamentos eram constituídos (...) de três diferentes frequências de alimentação, sendo: uma vez ao dia (08:00 horas), duas vezes ao dia (08:00 e 18:00 horas) e três vezes ao dia (08:00, 13:00 e 18:00 horas). A relação volumoso:concentrado usada foi de 46,9:53,1 com base na matéria seca. Os cordeiros foram abatidos quando atingiram o peso vivo de fazenda, de 38 kg. Houve diferença estatística (P<0,05) para as variáveis peso e rendimento de costelas, peso e proporção de Rins e peso de Rum+Ret. As demais variáveis não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos. Em função dos resultados podemos recomendar uma única oferta diária como manejo alimentar para cordeiros terminados em confinamento recebendo resíduo úmido de cervejaria como fonte de volumoso. Palavras-chave: Cordeiro, Carcaça, Resíduo de Cervejaria, Confinamento. -/- ABSTRACT The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of finishing confined lambs using wet brewery residue as a source of roughage offered at different feeding frequencies on the characteristics of the carcass and non-carcass components. 30 uncastrated male lambs were used, coming from an alternating cross between the Texel and Ile de France breeds. At the beginning of confinement, the animals had an average age of 72.7±6 days and an average weight of 25.44±4.1 kg. The treatments consisted of three different feeding frequencies: once a day (08:00), twice a day (08:00 and 18:00) and three times a day (08:00, 13:00). 00 and 18:00 hours). The roughage:concentrate ratio used was 46.9:53.1 based on dry matter. Lambs were slaughtered when they reached farm live weight of 38 kg. There was a statistical difference (P<0.05) for the variables weight and yield of ribs, weight and proportion of Kidneys and weight of Rum+Ret. The other variables did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. Based on the results, we can recommend a single daily supply as a dietary management for lambs finished in confinement receiving wet brewery residue as a source of roughage. RESUMEN El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto del acabado de corderos confinados utilizando residuos húmedos de cervecería como fuente de forraje ofrecido en diferentes frecuencias de alimentación sobre las características de los componentes de la carcasa y no carcasa. Se utilizaron 30 corderos machos sin castrar, procedentes de un cruce alterno entre las razas Texel e Ile de France. Al inicio del confinamiento, los animales tenían una edad promedio de 72,7±6 días y un peso promedio de 25,44±4,1 kg. Los tratamientos consistieron en tres frecuencias de alimentación diferentes: una vez al día (08:00), dos veces al día (08:00 y 18:00) y tres veces al día (08:00, 13:00 y 18:00). horas). La relación forraje:concentrado utilizada fue 46,9:53,1 basada en materia seca. Los corderos fueron sacrificados cuando alcanzaron un peso vivo en granja de 38 kg. Hubo diferencia estadística (P<0,05) para las variables peso y rendimiento de costillas, peso y proporción de Riñones y peso de Ron+Ret. Las demás variables no difirieron (P>0.05) entre tratamientos. Con base en los resultados, podemos recomendar un suministro único diario como manejo dietético para corderos terminados en confinamiento que reciben residuos húmedos de cervecería como fuente de forraje. Forty lambs with 90 ± 5 days of age; 24 ± 3 kg initial BW; were confined in a feedlotfor 60 days and assigned two different diets, without or with soy lecithin. The animals were slaughtered, and the carcasses were kept in a cold chamber for 24 h, at 2ºC, and were measured for carcass yield, chemical composition of the meat, lipid oxidation and fatty acid profile. The experimental design was completely randomized, data were analyzed using SAS, and compared with (...) the means by the Student Test at 5% probabilities. The use of soy lecithin improve daily weight gain (kg/d, P < 0.05) and reduced hot and cold carcass yield (P > 0.05), but it did not alter other carcass characteristics with pH, temperature, loin area, subcutaneous fat thickness. The moisture, protein, ethereal extract and mineral of meat has not been altered by the soy lecithin (P>0.05). The results was same for lipid oxidation (P > 0.05). In the fatty acid profile, only C17:1c9 and C18:2t acids were altered (P < 0.05). The study indicates that soy lecithin can be used safely in animal feed as it does not negatively affect the quality of the meat and carcass of the animal, ensuring the production of food safety for the consumer. The use of omega fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation could be a beneficial strategy to improve health and production in ruminants. In this study, the effect of the dietary addition of c9, t11 and t10, c12 isomers of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in pure soybean oil (T1) was compared with pure soybean oil (T2) and soybean oil discarded after frying fish (Centropomus undecimalis, Pagrus pagrus, and Caranx crysos; T3) on the fatty acid profile in ewe milk and the tissues (...) of their lambs. Forty-five multiparous ewes (East Friesian × Katahdin), 32 to 35 months old, 70 days pregnant, were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental diets. The fatty acid profile, total solids, fat, protein, and lactose in milk were determined 14 days postpartum. Fifteen lambs from each treatment were sacrificed at 70 days of age, and the fatty acid profiles in perirenal fat, muscle, and brain were determined. In milk, fat and total solids content were lower with T1. On the other hand, linoleic acid content, the sum of omega-6 and DHA were higher in T1 compared to other groups (p < 0.05). In the brain, stearic acid and linoleic acid concentration increased with T1; eicosapentaenoic acid decreased and omega-3s increased with T3, while DHA was lower in T2 (p < 0.05). The addition of CLA isomers or discarded soybean oil in ewe diet from pregnancy to lactation is advantageous for the ewe since less energy in the form of milk fat is lost. In addition, increasing the concentration of omega fatty acids in ewe diet to improve omega fatty acids in lamb’s brain could be a feed strategy to increase their productivity and health. (shrink)

Prickly pear fruit processing industries generate a substantial amount of fibrous by-products as waste rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and tannins, and that contain considerable minerals and water-soluble carbohydrates. This study investigated the potential of prickly pear by-product silage as feed in the diet of Valle del Belice ewes and its effects on body weight, milk yield and composition, nutrient utilisation and degradability and in vitro ruminal fermentation characteristics. A total of 12 ewes (60 d in lactation) were selected (...) and randomly divided into three experimental groups, homogeneous for parity, live weight and milk yield. Each group was fed for 14 d (9 d for diet adaptation + 5 d for sampling), with one of the three experimental diets based on a Latin square design. The diets with the same crude protein and NDF were: 1) control (CTR) diet with hay and concentrate; 2) prickly pear peels (PPP) diet with PPP silage, hay and concentrate; and 3) pulp, peels and seeds (PPS) diet with PPS silage, hay and concentrate. Nutrient intake varied between diets, with total DM intake being greater in the CTR and PPS (p < 0.01) diets than in the PPP diet. Daily milk yield tended to be lower in ewes fed the PPP and PPS diets than in those fed the CTR diet, whereas no differences were found for fat- and protein-corrected milk between diets. Protein and casein (p ≤ 0.05) levels were higher in the milk of ewes fed the PPP diet. Compared with the milk urea concentration of CTR-fed ewes, that of PPP-fed ewes was 15 % lower. The in vivo nutrient degradability, in vitro fermentation rate and volatile FAs were greater (p < 0.01) in the PPP diet than in the PPS diet. These results suggest that PPP silage can be partially incorporated into dairy ewe diets to reduce feeding costs and improve milk nitrogen efficiency. (shrink)
