This paper is concerned with the particular problems raised by observations of phenomena outside the common course of nature for their validation as knowledge. It examines to what extent the content of the reports and, in particular, their lack of intrinsic plausibility affected the methods used in their authentication and the assessment of testimony at the Royal Society in the first half of the eighteenth century. I show that literary strategies were usually necessary but not sufficient for the validation of (...) these kinds of observations. Next, I discuss why visual representations were especially useful in establishing the singularity of the observations, but I point out that their high costs and other restrictions meant that they were not so widespread. In contrast I show that, for a long period of time, testimony was used in the majority of the reports as the true stamp of authenticity. I note, however, that the Royal Society accepted reports by authors of varied social status, level of education and occupation, and I discuss some of the factors responsible for the complexity of the handling of testimony at the Society. I argue against Shapin that in the case of reports of extraordinary phenomena, the competence of the reporter and witnesses was often more important than their social status. The fact that monstrous births were not represented in independent learned publications of the eighteenth century, except for the case of hermaphrodites, does not mean that the interest in them had disappeared or that they were no more considered proper objects of inquiry. This paper focuses on the medical understanding of monstrosity at the Royal Society of London. I point to the use of monstrous births in strengthening the authority of medical practitioners and lecturers. I also show some of their (...) uses in providing new questions for the scenes of medical inquiry of the period and as crucial evidence in the understanding of regular physiological phenomena. I discuss some of the reasons why monstrous formations continued to defy an 'Enlightenment' approach to nature based on the search for order and regularity. (shrink)

In his influential work, A social history of truth, Steven Shapin has argued for the central role of social status in the assessment of experimental knowledge. In his view, in seventeenth-century England, gentlemen were considered the right kind of persons to trust because of their freedom of action, codes of virtue and honour. These characteristics ensured credibility and, hence, compelled assent. However, Shapin does not put sufficient emphasis on the relevance of the testifier’s competence in the validation of knowledge. When (...) and in which circumstances did expertise become more important than social status in the accreditation of natural knowledge? [...] I argue in this paper that it is in the realm of interpretation of unusual and ambiguous anatomies that medical and, in particular, anatomical expertise assumed its most crucial role. Moreover, the medical understanding of the hermaphroditic body in the eighteenth century can be considered one of the most illustrative cases of the construction and display of anatomical expertise. In fact, several of the academic memoirs and dissertations published on hermaphrodites in the eighteenth century attempted precisely to fulfil this purpose. (shrink)

Summary During the first decades of the sixteenth century, several animals described and viewed as exotic by the Europeans were regularly shipped from India to Lisbon. This paper addresses the relevance of these ‘new’ animals to knowledge and visual representations of the natural world. It discusses their cultural and scientific meaning in Portuguese travel literature of the period as well as printed illustrations, charts and tapestries. This paper suggests that Portugal did not make the most of its unique position in (...) bringing news and animals from Asia. This was either because secrecy associated with trade and military interests hindered the diffusion of illustrations presented in Portuguese travel literature or because the illustrations commissioned by the nobility were represented on expensive media such as parchments and tapestries and remained treasured possessions. However, the essay also proposes that the Portuguese contributed to a new sense of the experience and meaning of nature and that they were crucial mediators in access to new knowledge and new ways of representing the natural world during this period. Durante todo o século XVIII, existiu um grande fascínio por seres humanos hermafroditas. Este interesse encontra-se patenteado nas suas inúmeras exibiçōes públicas e nas vánas dissertaçōes académicas sobre o tema. Neste período, e em contraste com o anterior, a existência de seres humanos hermafroditas passou a ser questionada por membros da comunidade médica da época incluindo James Parsons, para o qual a figura do hermafrodita deveria ser erradicada do entendimento anatómico da diferença sexual. Albrecht von Haller nāo ficou indiferente à (...) controvérsia sobre a existência de hermafroditas humanos. Este artigo tem como objectivo apresentar e debater a sua visāo sobre esta temática, primeiramente apresentada na sua dissertaçāo sobre hermafroditas datada de 1752 e depois num artigo da Encyclopédie de 1777. De que modo a sua abordagem do problema foi distinta da dos seus contemporâneos? Qual foi o seu contúbuto para o entendimento da ambiguidade sexual? Haller pnvilegiou o estudo de homens com deformaçōes genitais habitualmente descrítos como hermafroditas mas que, no seu entender, deveriam ser considerados verdadeiros homens com plenos direitos legais e sociais. Mais ainda, Haller não tinha uma visāo redutora sobre o problema da ambiguidade sexual. No seu entender, os seres humanos hermafroditas, embora raros, poderíam existir. Afinal, o estudo da natureza mostrava o quāo ela era fértil na produçãāo de novas figuras e formas. Throughout the eighteenth century, there was a great fascination with human hermaphrodites. This interest is evident in their frequent public exhibitions and in the numerous academic dissertations published on the subject. In contrast with the previous period where men, women and hermaphrodites where thought to exist, the very existence of the latter was called into question by some members of the medical community including James Parsons for whom the the category of hermaphrodite should be eradicated from the understanding of sexual diference. Albrecht von Haller was not indifferent to the controversy on the existence of human hermaphrodites. This article is concerned with his views on the issue first presented in his dissertation on hermaphrodites and later in the French Encyclopédie . To what extent were his views on the subject different from the ones argued by other anatomists of the period? What was his contribute to the understanding of sexual ambiguity? In this paper, I will argue that Haller was especially concerned with men with genital deformations who, in his view, should not be described as hermaphrodites and should have the same social rights as other men. Moreover, Haller had an open view on the issue of the existence of human hermaphrodites. Although he considered the possibility of their existence rare, he did not deny the vast potential of nature in producing new shapes and forms. (shrink)

There are very few (published) accounts of editorial misconduct, and those that do exist are almost exclusively focused on medicine-related areas. In the present article we detail a case of editorial misconduct in a rather underexplored domain, the social sciences. This case demonstrates that although legal systems provide different instruments of protection to avoid, compensate for, and punish misconduct on the part of journal editors, the social and economic power unbalance between authors and publishers suggests the importance of alternative solutions (...) before or instead of bringing a lawsuit to court. It puts forward strong arguments in favour of the need for effective regulatory bodies so as to achieve and maintain a culture of research integrity by all involved in the process. (shrink)

IntroductionThere is a need to maintain rehabilitation activities and motivate movement and physical activity during quarantine in individuals with Cerebral Palsy.ObjectiveThis paper sets out to evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits of using computer serious game in a non-immersive virtual reality implemented and evaluated completely remotely in participants with CP for Home-Based Telerehabilitation during the quarantine period for COVID-19.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design, a total of 44 individuals participated in this study between March and June 2020, 22 of which had CP (...) and 22 typically developing individuals, matched by age and sex to the individuals with CP. Participants practiced a coincident timing game1 and we measured movement performance and physical activity intensity using the rating of perceived exertion Borg scale.ResultsAll participants were able to engage with the VR therapy remotely, reported enjoying sessions, and improved performance in some practice moments. The most important result in this cross-sectional study was the significant increasing in rating of perceived exertion in both groups during practice and with CP presenting a higher rating of perceived exertion.ConclusionChildren with CP enjoyed participating, were able to perform at the same level as their peers on certain activities and increased both their performance and physical activity intensity when using the game, supporting the use of serious games for this group for home therapy and interactive games.Clinical Trials Registrationhttps://Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT04402034. Esta Comunicação objetiva apresentar dois trabalhos acadêmicos de Luis Cláudio Cardoso Bandeira. A dissertação de mestrado, intitulada Entidades africanas em “troca de águas”: diásporas religiosas desde o Ceará, apresenta a pesquisa sobre tradições africanas no Ceará. No doutorado, Bandeira trata de Rotas e raízes itinerantes e destaca veredas desafiadoras do diálogo entre história e religião. Participando das duas bancas, tive a oportunidade de perceber as nuances do caminho acadêmico percorrido por ele. Neste texto , faço memória dessas duas participações, sintetizando (...) brevemente esses trabalhos realizados. Começo destacando, brevemente, uma das fontes importantes de Bandeira no doutorado: as pesquisas que Agenor Sarraf Pacheco tem realizado sobre Memórias, Identidades, Saberes, Religiosidades letradas e de matrizes orais afroindigenas em circuitos da Amazônia . Segundo Pacheco, para se conhecer a presença dos negros na Amazônia é fundamental investigar essa relação com as culturas e sabedorias indígenas. Palavras-chave : Tradições africanas. O artigo objetiva investigar, à luz do filósofo Charles Taylor, a questão do reconhecimento dos sujeitos a partir da relação entre secularismo e religião. O fio condutor do pensamento de Taylor é o comunitarismo. Este se relaciona com a ideia de que o contexto das normas que regem uma sociedade deve ser o de uma comunidade que, em seus valores, práticas e instituições formam um horizonte constitutivo para a identidade de seus membros. Somente assim seria possível colocar as questões da (...) justiça e, então, responder sobre o que é bom e o que deve valer para a comunidade. Segundo Taylor, os homens são seres expressivos porque pertencem a uma cultura que é nutrida e transmitida no interior de uma comunidade. Taylor parte da crítica hegeliana ao formalismo kantiano que deslocou o sujeito da comunidade, da história e da cultura, gerando demandas de reconhecimento. Ele enfatiza que a religião, por exemplo, ainda se relaciona com a formação das diversas identidades, tal qual uma esfera essencial na constituição dos sujeitos, mesmo em sociedades secularizadas. Taylor destaca a existência de múltiplas modernidades, uma vez que culturas não ocidentais foram modernizadas à sua maneira, sem a necessária separação entre identidades secularizadas e religiosas. O filósofo também defende uma redefinição do secularismo que valorize as religiões como fontes essenciais e indispensáveis para diversos sujeitos que se formaram a partir de outras linguagens, culturas e tradições diversas da concepção tradicional de secularismo. Analisa-se o livro didático Fundamentos de Educação de Amaral Fontoura, livro destinado para alunas das Escolas Normais brasileiras, especialmente as fluminenses, pela Gráfica Editôra Aurora do Rio de Janeiro. Realizar-se-á a investigação levando em consideração a produção deste livro didático, buscando compreender a produção do autor, que publicou 13 diferentes títulos ou mais para a “Biblioteca Didática Brasileira”. Na obra Fundamentos de Educação, 342 páginas, 4 edições, analisar-se-á textos e paratextos. Quanto ao texto, analisar-se-á o índice, composto por 19 capítulos (...) e 2 anexos. No que se refere aos paratextos, verificar-se-á elementos tais como: capa, relação de obras produzidas por Amaral Fontoura, para a coleção “Biblioteca Didática Brasileira”, dedicatória, parecer do Secretário de Educação e Cultura do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, apresentação da coleção, e sua organização em quatro séries, além de uma nota prévia. Sendo assim, tem-se como fonte primária desta investigação, um exemplar da 4ª edição do livro didático Fundamentos de Educação de Amaral Fontoura. Buscando melhor compreender este compêndio em questão, analisar-se-á o Decreto-Lei n. 8.530, de 2 de janeiro de 1946, Lei Orgânica do Ensino Normal. A leitura deste livro permite compreender, em parte, o currículo das Escolas Normais nas décadas de 1940 e 1950 no Brasil, uma vez que o mesmo foi produzido dentro de uma coleção que se chamava “Biblioteca Didática Brasileira”, apresentando 5 volumes da série I “Escola Viva”, especializados para o currículo das Escolas Normais: volume 1: Fundamentos de Educação; volume 2 – Sociologia Educacional; volume 3 – Metodologia do Ensino Primário; volume 4 – Psicologia Geral; volume 5 – Psicologia Educacional, disciplinas estas, elencadas no Decreto-Lei n. 8.530, de 2 de janeiro de 1946, Lei Orgânica do Ensino Normal, artigos 7º, 8º e 9º. Mas tal interpretação não mostra ser suficientemente crítica, pois transfere a preponderância do pai para a mãe, desconsiderando teorias não-binárias cujas fontes psicanalíticas se encontrariam em outras leituras não-oficiais de Freud. Tais seriam as visões de Loewald, Chodorow e Butler, que se concentram na complementaridade entre os desenvolvimentos pré-edípico e edípico ou na subversão interna do complexo de Édipo. O antigo convento do Santíssimo Coração de Jesus à Estrela encerra um interessante conjunto de painéis de azulejos alusivos à vida de Santa Teresa de Jesus, cujas composições foram concebidas a partir da cópia directa de dez gravuras do álbum Vita S. Virginis Teresiae a Iesv. Série biográfica impressa pela primeira vez em Amberes em 1613, a sua concretização coube aos célebres gravadores Adriaen Collaert e Cornelis Galle. Convertidas num modelo corrente para inúmeras obras de arte ao longo dos tempos, (...) assumiram urna importância capital na fixação e desenvolvimento de parte da iconografia teresiana, constituindo-se como um eficaz veículo para a rápida difusão da sua biografia. Esse artigo faz parte de um estudo maior sobre Avicena e suas fontes tardo-antigas que visa a analisar a relação entre Avicena, Alexandre de Afrodísia e Temístio no que diz respeito ao intelecto. Há, ainda hoje, uma série de questões discutidas pelos estudiosos relativas à teoria noética de Avicena. Uma dessas questões trata da natureza do intelecto agente e da sua relação com o intelecto humano. Contudo, dada a complexidade dessa relação, as linhas que se seguem consistem na primeira (...) parte da investigação, a qual se restringirá a uma introdução geral ao posicionamento dos três autores quanto à natureza do intelecto produtivo (ou agente). Tendo em vista as diferentes abordagens, dentre elas a identificação da posição tomada por Avicena com aquela encontrada nas obras de Alexandre de Afrodísia e Temístio, analisarei, em linhas gerais, as suas interpretações do De anima 430a10-25 quanto à caracterização e distinção dos intelectos. A reflexão que se desenvolve, aqui, reporta-se ao contexto de um período caracterizado por questionamentos profundos, no que tange à tensão entre as diferentes concepções de ciência, verdade, método, ética científica. O eixo da discussão incide sobre o lugar da ética neste século, exercendo o papel de problematizadora de uma vinculação fetichista a determinada visão acerca da verdade, visão esta que tem mantido as Ciências Humanas refém de um olhar cético em relação à legitimidade do conhecimento que produz. O objetivo (...) principal, aqui, é provocar um debate que instigue a uma visão que venha a transcender a oposição excludente entre Ciências Humanas e Naturais, cuja polêmica se assenta na tensão entre os conceitos de verdade e verdade científica. Neste sentido, consideram-se como resultados da discussão, a proposta de que o problema fundamental na pesquisa científica, atualmente, consiste em assumir o desafio de ressignificar a visão sobre a fonte do conhecimento e, em consequência, os meios de deliberar sobre o que distingue verdade de verdade científica. Embora não seja uma questão nova, pois segue peregrina desde a sua origem, precisa ser conjecturada sob a emergência de uma nova mentalidade. Desta vez, desestabilizando-se da visão de que a verdade científica estaria ou no sujeito ou no objeto, e sendo a fonte do conhecimento um lugar de onde fala um sujeito que conhece e um objeto que é conhecido, em posição de equidade epistemológica, a verdade poderia estar na relação entre eles e, em consequência, no princípio da complementaridade entre as ciências. O objetivo deste artigo é fazer uma discussão apontando para o enfraquecimento de Estados Democráticos como resultado de uma _Predação Estatal_. Predação estatal é utilizada aqui para designar um sucateamento e desordens no Estado como resultados de má administração, corrupção, entre outros fatores. Para tal, fez-se uma discussão/síntese inicial sobre a concepção de Estado/sociedade em John Rawls, buscando relacionar sua ideia de estado ideal com a concepção de Estado Democrático de Direito de autores como Rubens Casara, que, a princípio, dialoga (...) de forma a concordar com a teoria da justiça de Rawls. Se percebeu, nesse sentido, que as concepções desses dois autores vão na contramão da predação estatal, pois esta última consiste na ausência de elementos como democracia, organização do Estado, garantia de direitos, entre outros, apontados por Rawls e Casara. Assim o trabalho foi escrito a partir de análise bibliográfica que versam sobre os temas em questão. A relevância do trabalho consiste na contribuição para a construção do conceito de predação estatal e _Estado Fraco_, possibilitando, dessa forma, uma ampliação da bibliografia a respeito desses conceitos, sendo este trabalho uma dessas fontes bibliográficas. Isso porque, por estarem ainda em construção, sobretudo a ideia de estado fraco, a bibliografia é rara, e praticamente não existe no Brasil. Vale ressaltar que Estado fraco não é Estado fracassado, que dispõe de maior bibliografia e tem uma concepção distinta de Estado fraco. (shrink)

An introduction to the model-theoretic approach in the philosophy of science is given and it is argued that this program is further enhanced by the introduction of partial structures. It is then shown that this leads to a natural and intuitive account of both "iconic" and mathematical models and of the role of the former in science itself.

O Traço e a prosa: entrevistas com ilustradores de livros infantojuvenis (2012) é uma coletânea sobre artistas ilustradores organizada por Odilon Moraes, Rona Hanning e Maurício Paraguassu, da editora Cosac Naify e que trata desse assunto, especificamente.O livro é composto de doze entrevistas com autores/ilustradores brasileiros experientes na área, e inova em acervos e (...) fontes para pesquisadores e estudantes da área de literatura infantojuvenil, trazendo boa amostra do que vem sendo produzido no Brasil em termos de ilustração e de narrativa. Este artigo se dedica ao aparecimento do tema da vulnerabilidade, a partir do século 18, em xilogravuras cuja narrativa visual se refere ao processo de envelhecimento das pessoas em analogia com o motivo da escada ou dos degraus da vida. A ausência da consideração da deficiência como um possível atravessamento do ciclo da vida disparou o problema investigativo: Como se dá o aparecimento do tema da vulnerabilidade em xilogravuras cuja narrativa visual se refere ao motivo da escada ou dos degraus (...) da vida, acompanhada por uma narrativa religiosa? Apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa documental exploratória, realizada nos acervos do Museu da Imagem na cidade de Epinal, França, do Museu das Culturas, na cidade de Basileia, Suíça e da Igreja Estadual de Estugarda, Alemanha, no mês de julho de 2017. Argumenta, como primeiro resultado, comparando as narrativas visuais educacionais e religiosas, que há uma modificação da narrativa visual do motivo da escada da vida e que seu aparecimento antecipa, na área da educação, mas não na área da teologia, a consideração do respeito à vulnerabilidade como condição antropológica. Como segundo resultado, mostra-se a importância da cultura visual como narrativa própria e fonte essencial para as ciências humanas, em especial, para educação e as ciências da religião, neste caso a ressignificação da vulnerabilidade humana no campo da educação inclusiva que exige um novo olhar para a condição humana. Inevitável para um mais amplo conhecimento das práticas artísticas setecentistas, analisar a influência exercida pela pintura na concretização de objectos escultóricos afigura-se da maior pertinência. Áreas que se relacionam por via do papel desempenhado pelos pintores no desenho de escultura, se, no panorama internacional, o fenómeno tem despertado algum interesse, já no contexto português, apesar de aceite e até referido como corrente, tem sido praticamente ignorado.

We apply the recently elaborated notions of 'pragmatic truth' and 'pragmatic probability' to the problem of the construction of a logic of inductive inference. It is argued that the system outlined here is able to overcome many of the objections usually levelled against such attempts. We claim, furthermore, that our view captures the essentially cumulative nature of science and allows us to explain why it is indeed reasonable to accept and believe in the conclusions reached by inductive inference.

O artigo busca delinear a posição da Paidéia Grega na história da Educação e evidenciar a diferença existente entre a Paidéia Grega e a Paidéia Cristã. Mostra-se que a educação é o esforço consciente do conhecimento; que esta não é uma propriedade individual, mas pertence à comunidade que imprime seu caráter em cada um de seus membros; que toda educação, portanto, é resultado da consciência viva que rege uma comunidade humana, quer se trate: de uma família, de uma classe, de (...) uma profissão, de um grupo étnico, de um Estado; e que o homem é a fonte de toda ação e de todo conhecimento. Destaca a concepção fundante da Paideia Cristã e sua original proposta de universalização da possibilidade de conhecer e de crer, posta para toda a humanidade. In the early centuries of the nascent Church, we find a fountain experience lived by the Church at its beginnings: mystagogy. In this period of the Church’s history, the pedagogy which inspires the Church Fathers is mystagogy, that is, the pedagogy of Mystery. We believe that in the mystagogy experience, lived in the Church in the 3rd and 4th centuries, one finds a fruitful fountain which may be paradigmatic with regard to the contemporary religious experiences. We invite the reader to (...) walk with us along the pedagogy that is characteristic of the early centuries of the Christian route: mystagogy. Mystagogy reaches us as fountain pedagogy, which may be paradigmatic for an opening process and dialogue with the new subjectivities and intersubjectivities under construction. The mystagogy experienced in the early days of Christianity becomes a theological place which dialogues with our times, a dialogue between the fountain theology, foremost, and the theology of nowadays, a second reflection. The issue of what consequences to draw from the existence of non-classical logical systems has been the subject of an interesting debate across a diversity of fields. In this paper the matter of alternative logics is considered with reference to a specific belief system and its propositions :the Azande are said to maintain beliefs about witchcraft which, when expressed propositionally, appear to be inconsistent. When the Azande have been presented with such inconsistencies, they either fail to see them as such (...) or else accept them as non-problematical. Is our knowledge of logical truths a relative and culturally determined phenomenon, or is there some (transcendent) criterion that allows us to adjudicate between alternative logical systems? The authors propose an approach for resolving disputes about the status of Azande reasoning which assumes a paraconsistent framework, thus providing a new perspective on this debate. (shrink)

We formulate Suppes predicates for various kinds of space-time: classical Euclidean, Minkowski's, and that of General Relativity. Starting with topological properties, these continua are mathematically constructed with the help of a basic algebra of events; this algebra constitutes a kind of mereology, in the sense of Lesniewski. There are several alternative, possible constructions, depending, for instance, on the use of the common field of reals or of a non-Archimedian field (with infinitesimals). Our approach was inspired by the work of Whitehead (...) (1919), though our philosophical stance is completely different from his. The structures obtained are idealized constructs underlying extant, physical space-time. (shrink)

We investigate the higher-order modal logic , which is a variant of the system presented in our previous work. A semantics for that system, founded on the theory of quasi sets, is outlined. We show how such a semantics, motivated by the very intuitive base of Schrödinger logics, provides an alternative way to formalize some intensional concepts and features which have been used in recent discussions on the logical foundations of quantum mechanics; for example, that some terms like 'electron' have (...) no precise reference and that 'identical' particles cannot be named unambiguously. In the last section, we sketch a classical semantics for quasi set theory. (shrink)

An improvement on Horwich's so-called "pseudo-proof" of Russell's principle of induction is offered, which, we believe, avoids certain objections to the former. Although strictly independent of our other work in this area, a connection can be made and in the final section we comment on this and certain questions regarding rationality, etc.

There are several conceptions of truth, such as the classical correspondence conception, the coherence conception and the pragmatic conception. The classical correspondence conception, or Aristotelian conception, received a mathematical treatment in the hands of Tarski (cf. Tarski [1935] and [1944]), which was the starting point of a great progress in logic and in mathematics. In effect, Tarski's semantic ideas, especially his semantic characterization of truth, have exerted a major influence on various disciplines, besides logic and mathematics; for instance, linguistics, the (...) philosophy of science, and the theory of knowledge. The importance of the Tarskian investigations derives, among other things, from the fact that they constitute a mathematical, formal mark to serve as a reference for the philosophical (informal) conceptions of truth. Today the philosopher knows that the classical conception can be developed and that it is free from paradoxes and other difficulties, if certain precautions are taken. We believe that is not an exaggeration if we assert that Tarski's theory should be considered as one of the greatest accomplishments of logic and mathematics of our time, an accomplishment which is also of extraordinary relevance to philosophy, as we have already remarked. In this paper we show that the pragmatic conception of truth, at least in one of its possible interpretations, has also a mathematical formulation, similar in spirit to that given by Tarski to the classical correspondence conception. In this paper we will present the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s main reflections on the scientific enterprise, its relation to the metaphysical tradition, and how the German author drew on the nineteenth century cosmological discussion to develop a worldview that ultimately endorses a dynamic and more creative form of science, whose representations and values should not be separated from human interests.
