The Transformative Journey of Transplantation.Valen Keefer - 2022 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 12 (2):129-131.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Transformative Journey of TransplantationValen KeeferThe moisture from the ocean floated effortlessly through the air as it glided over the rocky cliff. The steady stream of mist covered my face and frizzy hair with beaded water droplets. I had been sitting on a bench alone for hours admiring the Northern California coast at a magnificent overlook featuring a bird’s-eye view of the endless sea and campground I called home (...)

    Ecological Species, Multispecies, and Oaks.Leigh Van Valen - 1976 - Taxon 25 (2/3):233-239.
Oaks exemplify problems with the reproductive species concept which motivate a reconsideration of the use and nature of species. Ecology is important in the reconsideration. The species level is usually overemphasized in evolutionary thought; selection acts on phenotypes and any mutualistic units. Standard definitions tend to inhibit free conceptual progress. Multispecies, sets of broadly sympatric species that exchange genes, may occur among animals as well as plants and may conceivably bridge kingdoms. This phenomenon can be adaptively important. There may be (...)

How ubiquitous is adaptation? A critique of the epiphenomenist program.Leigh Van Valen - 2009 - Biology and Philosophy 24 (2):267-280.
It is important to distinguish adaptation per se (adaptedness, or being adapted) from the more specific concept of adaptation for some function. Commonly used criteria for adaptation in either sense have limited applicability. There are, however, a number of widely applicable criteria for adaptation per se, such as several kinds of cost, low variation, the maintenance of integration, and the fitness distribution of mutations. Application of these criteria leads to the conclusion that adaptation is overwhelmingly prevalent for features of organisms. (...)

Species, sets, and the derivative nature of philosophy.Leigh M. Valen - 1988 - Biology and Philosophy 3 (1):49-66.
Concepts and methods originating in one discipline can distort the structure of another when they are applied to the latter. I exemplify this mostly with reference to systematic biology, especially problems which have arisen in relation to the nature of species. Thus the received views of classes, individuals (which term I suggest be replaced by units to avoid misunderstandings), and sets are all inapplicable, but each can be suitably modified. The concept of fuzzy set was developed to deal with species (...)

Querying Consent: Beyond Permission and Refusal.Keja Valens & Jordana Greenblatt (eds.) - 2018 - Rutgers University Press.
_Querying Consent_ examines the ways in which the concept of consent is used to map and regulate sexual desire, gender relationships, global positions, technological interfaces, relationships of production and consumption, and literary and artistic interactions. From philosophy to literature, psychoanalysis to the art world, the contributors to _Querying Consent_ address the most uncomfortable questions about consent today. Grounded in theoretical explorations of the entanglement of consent and subjectivity across a range of textual, visual, multi- and digital media, _Querying Consent_ considers (...)

    Identifying (non‐)coding RNAs and small peptides: Challenges and opportunities.Andrea Pauli, Eivind Valen & Alexander F. Schier - 2015 - Bioessays 37 (1):103-112.
Over the past decade, high‐throughput studies have identified many novel transcripts. While their existence is undisputed, their coding potential and functionality have remained controversial. Recent computational approaches guided by ribosome profiling have indicated that translation is far more pervasive than anticipated and takes place on many transcripts previously assumed to be non‐coding. Some of these newly discovered translated transcripts encode short, functional proteins that had been missed in prior screens. Other transcripts are translated, but it might be the process of (...)

    Revisiting Leigh Van Valen’s “A New Evolutionary Law” (1973).Ricard Solé - 2022 - Biological Theory 17 (2):120-125.
Leigh Van Valen was an American evolutionary biologist who made major contributions to evolutionary theory. He is particularly remembered for his groundbreaking paper “A New Evolutionary Law” (1973) where he provided evidence from fossil record data that the probability of extinction within any group remains essentially constant through time. In order to explain such an unexpected result, Van Valen formulated a very influential idea that he dubbed the “Red Queen hypothesis.” It states that the constant decay must be a consequence (...)

Ganz Rhetor, ganz Philosoph – Themistios als Lobredner auf Valens: Ethik als göttliche Herrschaftslegitimation.Simone Mehr - 2023 - De Gruyter.

Is it Time for an Updated ‘Eco-Evo-Devo’ Definition of Evolution by Natural Selection?Marion Blute - 2008 - Spontaneous Generations 2 (1):1.
Abstract A lot of science has passed under the bridge since the classic definition of evolution as a change in gene frequencies in a population became common. Much knowledge has accumulated since then about evolution, heredity, ecology, development, phenotypic plasticity, niche construction and genetic drift. Building on Van Valen’s description of evolution as “the control of development by ecology,” it is suggested that the classic definition be replaced by a updated ‘eco‐evo-evo’ definition of evolution by natural selection which acknowledges this (...)

Conceptual Issues in Ecology.Esa Saarinen - 1982 - Springer Verlag.
In this collection of essays, some of the leading ecologists and philosophers discuss the foundations of ecology and evolutionary biology. While large scale philosophical convictions and attitudes often direct the theorist's line of concrete action in data collection and in theory information, the founda tional convictions typically remain tacit, and are seldom argued for. The present collection aims to remedy this situation. It brings together scholars representing different approaches in a joint effort to explicate and analyse some of the key (...)

    The evolution of replication.Marion Blute - 2007 - Biological Theory 2 (1):10-22.
If all origins of life or of any new grade, level, or major transition as such begin with “competitive development”—with juveniles rather than adults, and multiple individuals rather than a single one—then the evolution of progeneration and of replication always requires an explanation. This article proposes that principles of evolutionary ecology such as density-dependence can be used to explain three kinds of developmental repetitions, viz., sequences of inductive and niche-constructing interactions between the ecological environment and population members, which take place (...)

La analogía como transferencia argumentativa (analogy as an argumentative transfer).Hubert Marraud - 2007 - Theoria 22 (2):167-188.
