The Balfour Declaration: Scottish Presbyterian Eschatology and British Policy Towards Palestine.Alasdair Black - 2018 - Perichoresis 16 (4):35-59.
This article considers the theological influences on the Balfour Declaration which was made on the 2 November 1917 and for the first time gave British governmental support to the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It explores the principal personalities and political workings behind the Declaration before going on to argue the statement cannot be entirely divested from the religious sympathies of those involved, especially Lord Balfour. Thereafter, the paper explores the rise of Christian Restorationism in the context of (...)

Francesco Patrizi’s concept of “nature”: presence and refutation of Stoicism.Thomas Leinkauf - 2019 - Intellectual History Review 29 (4):575-593.
This essay analyzes the ways in which, in his Nova de Universis Philosophia, Francesco Patrizi uses, adopts, and, in some cases, rejects the Stoic philosophical tradition. Although, at first glance, most of Patrizi’s remarks on Stoicism and Stoic understanding of nature are critical – as this article demonstrates – he widely relied on Stoic teaching that he sought to combine with Neoplatonism and the prisca theologia doctrine.

The Eclipse of God1.Thomas F. Torrance - 1971 - In Thomas Forsyth Torrance, God and Rationality. New York,: Oxford University Press UK.
This chapter attempts to look into a number of epistemological issues that are of significance to modern thought. The title of this chapter is adopted from Martin Buber's book wherein he drew attention to some of the key issues in what is referred to as the ‘new theology’ of Harry Williams, Pail Van Buren, and other such theologians, and also in William Hamilton and Thomas Altizer's ‘God is dead’ theology. As Buber asserts that the eclipse is something that concerns (...)

Strangers and Fellow Citizens: Perspectives on Immigration and Society.Thomas Wabel - 2021 - Studies in Christian Ethics 34 (1):56-75.
The article sets out a critical assessment of recent public reactions in Germany upon taking in large numbers of refugees since 2015, which have been swaying between moralisation and resentment. In this situation, public theology should ask how hospitality is linked to the perceived identity of a society and to its perception of who belongs, and what role Christianity might play in these debates. Drawing on a phenomenological perspective within contemporary German philosophy (Bernhard Waldenfels), and contrasting this perspective with historical (...)

It has been posited that persuasive cues impart Evolution Wars communications with persuasive force extending beyond the merits of their communicated arguments. Additionally, it has been observed that the array of cues displayed throughout proevolutionist materials is exceeded in both the number and nuance of Darwin-skeptic persuasion techniques. This study reassesses these findings by exploring how persuasive cues in the Evolution Wars are being articulated with reference to the Cultural Cognition Thesis and Moral Foundations Theory. The Consistent Ethic of Life: Assessing its Reception and Relevance.Thomas A. Nairn (ed.) - 2008 - Orbis Books.
Catholic ethicists assess the development, reception, and relevance of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin's writings on the consistent ethic of life. The late Archbishop of Chicago, Joseph Bernardin, is best remembered for his "seamless garment" approach linking abortion, capital punishment, war, and social justice - and bringing insights from the New Testament and Catholic tradition to bear on the burning issues of our age. 32. The case for intrinsic theory V: Some arguments from James's varieties.Thomas Natsoulas - 2001 - Journal of Mind and Behavior 22 (1):41-67.
This and the planned next article of the present series mine the wealth of reports and astute discussions of states of consciousness contained in William James’s The Varieties of Religious Experience. Thus, I bring out further arguments in favor of the kind of understanding of consciousness4, or inner awareness, that, as it happens, James explicitly opposed in The Principles of Psychology. The alternative, appendage kind of account that James advanced there for consciousness4 stands in marked contrast to intrinsic theory: by (...)

Available from UMI in association with The British Library. ;This thesis traces endeavours in the twentieth century to provide the 'intellectual' foundations for general medical practice as an independent, autonomous clinical discipline. The empirical focus of the study is upon the application of psychological and 'person-centred' approaches to general practice; above all, in the work of Michael Balint, and the Royal College of General Practitioners in the post-war period. The thesis is guided by two predominant theoretical concerns. First, to highlight (...)

This volume contributes to the emerging critical conversation around Catherine Malabou’s thought. It focuses on some of Malabou's underexamined philosophical thematics, including dis-attachment or farewell. It also engages with Malabou's relation to deconstruction and her use of science.

The Status of Value-ranges in the Argument of Basic Laws of Arithmetic I §10.Thomas Lockhart - 2017 - History and Philosophy of Logic 38 (4):345-363.
Frege's concern in GGI §10 is neither with the epistemological issue of how we come to know about value-ranges, nor with the semantic-metaphysical issue of whether we have said enough about such objects in order to ensure that any kind of reference to them is possible. The problem which occupies Frege in GGI §10 is the general problem according to which we ‘cannot yet decide’, for any arbitrary function, what value ‘’ has if ‘ℵ’ is a canonical value-range name. This (...)
