This is an attempt to clarify the relation between Schmitt and Hobbes by examining Hobbes's thinking about enemies and enmity. On the one hand, Hobbes shares a strong war/crime distinction with Schmitt. On the other hand, Hobbes never suggests that lethal enmity gives a ?meaningful? tension to human life. Hobbes also describes the way feverish human minds may imagine enemies where none exist. This is another non?Schmittian theme. Although Schmitt was a profoundly anti?Hobbesian thinker for these and other reasons, an (...) examination of Hobbes with the Schmittian question (?who is the enemy??) in mind, proves exceptionally fruitful, opening up aspects of Hobbes's political theory that have hitherto lingered in obscurity. Aristotle's Politics is widely recognized as one of the classics of the history of political philosophy, and like every other such masterpiece, it is a work about which there is deep division.

In this collection of essays on the core values of liberalism, Stephen Holmes—noted for his scathing reviews of books by liberalism's opponents—challenges commonly held assumptions about liberal theory. By placing it into its original historical context, _Passions and Constraints_ presents an interconnected argument meant to fundamentally change the way we conceive of liberalism. According to Holmes, three elements of classical liberal theory are commonly used to attack contemporary liberalism as antagonistic to genuine democracy and the welfare state: constitutional constraints on (...) majority rule, the identification of individual freedom with an absence of government involvement, and a strong emphasis on the principle of self-interest. Holmes argues that the aspirations of liberal democracy—including individual liberty, the equal dignity of citizens, and a tolerance for diversity—are best understood in relation to two central themes of classical liberal theory: the psychological motivations of individuals and the necessary constraint on individual passions provided by institutions. Paradoxically, Holmes argues that such institutional restraints serve to enable, rather than limit, effective democracy. In explorations of subjects ranging from self-interest to majoritarianism to "gag rules," Holmes shows that limited government can be more powerful than unlimited government—indeed, that liberalism is one of the most effective philosophies of state building ever contrived. By restricting the arbitrary powers of government officials, Holmes states, a liberal constitution can increase the state's capacity to focus on specific problems and mobilize collective resources for common purposes. _Passions and Constraint_ is an assessment of what that tradition has meant and what it can mean today. In order to set up a dialogue the author, first, will attempt to discern similarities and differences between the ideas of Gregory Bateson and those of the so-called Pragmatist philosophers, John Dewey and William James. Second, he will address connecting points and relevance to intercultural communication training and teaching. For both sides aesthetics are of central importance, for Bateson, coming from the direction of systems, more in the observation of the pattern that connects. For Dewey, the aesthetic experience is embedded (...) in the context potentially in any situation. For both Dewey and James human and other organisms actively experiencing environments as situations are the beginning and the end of any philosophy of pragmatic significance. This paper focuses on the practical question of how the ideas of John Dewey can contribute to improved intercultural communication theory and practice, especially to training. The question is answered in four parts. The first part refers to the presumed superiority of sensitivity to difference as opposed to similarity in intercultural communication. The second part suggests that Dewey’s duality of potentiality and interaction can be carried over to the duality of competence and performance. The third part highlights the use of (...) the generic concepts of pattern and habit to better understand culture as a practical experience. The final part advocates a closer look at the idea and experience of rhythm as an epistemological alternative to subject vs object. The author relies on his experience as a trainer and a teacher of Intercultural Communication and proceeds down an interdisciplinary path, especially attempting to set up a dialogue with biology, systems and the arts. From the standpoint of an intercultural communication trainer in an exploration mode, the author starts by analyzing and evaluating two Third Culture models in order to sort out their contributions to practically improving intercultural communicative performance with the stranger. In his exploration he strives to move from competence to performance by shifting the focus of the abstract potential of competence to the body as an experiencing organism and its environment, the point in a situation where performance takes place. El presente artículo trata algunas cuestiones teóricas e históricas respecto de la regulación del acceso a los medios de comunicación. En primer lugar, se hace un recorrido de las doctrinas liberales de los siglos XVI y XVII que inspiraron la igual desconfianza que refleja la Constitución de Estados Unidos respecto de los poderes públicos y privados en relación con el control de los medios de comunicación y de la opinión pública; en segundo lugar, se hace una revisión de la supervivencia (...) de tales doctrinas liberales en la en la interpretación de la Suprema Corte de la Primera Enmienda, relativa a la libertad de expresión y de prensa y, en tercer lugar, analiza la aplicación de dicha doctrina en los principios que han regido la administración de concesiones de radio y televisión por parte de la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones. In diesem Aufsatz wird die Auffassung entwickelt, daß die Lehre von der Einfachheit Gottes erstens theologisch sinnvoll vertreten werden kann und sich zweitens für die Gotteslehre als hilfreich erweist. Der erste Argumentationsgang weist nach, daß die Kritik an der Lehre von der Einfachheit Gottes, die in den letzten Jahren mehrheitlich vorgetragen worden ist, auf einem Mißverständnis beruht. Es wird unterstellt, daß diese Lehre eine Ontologie voraussetzt, die faktisch in den traditionellen Ausformungen der Lehre von der Einfachheit Gottes gänzlich fehlt. Vor (...) diesem Hintergrund wird gezeigt, daß die Einfachheit Gottes im Rahmen trinitätstheologischer und christologischer Reflexion begründet werden kann. Damit kann diese Lehre dogmatisch sinnvoll vertreten werden – auch im Kontext trinitarischer Theologie. Im zweiten Argumentationsgang wird die Debatte zwischen Realismus und Nominalismus in ihren Konsequenzen für das Verständnis der Eigenschaften Gottes einer erneuten Prüfung unterzogen. Diese führt zu dem Ergebnis, daß scheinbar unlösbare dogmatische Probleme durch die Lehre von der Einfachheit Gottes einer Klärung näher gebracht werden können. Somit erweist sich diese Lehre für die Dogmatik als hilfreich. (shrink)

This article considers the post-Reformation debates over the extent of the Atonement. It traces the origins of these debates from the articles of the Arminian Remonstrance of 1610 through the declarations of the supporters of the Synod of Dort in 1618-19. The debate is then considered in relation to an English Baptist context, and specifically the exegetical dispute over the meaning of the word ‘all’ in 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 and Romans 3:23-4. Three options are examined and the various difficulties in (...) arbitrating between these various interpretations. Recognising these difficulties, the article goes on to explore the relationship between scriptural exegesis and theology with reference to the formulation of the ecumenical doctrine of the Trinity in the fourth century. It argues that while theology should always attempt to be consistent with the exegetical data on occasion it proves inconclusive, as in the case of the debate over the extent of the atonement. In such cases the role of theology becomes one of mediation as it seeks a way of reading the texts of Scripture that allows them to be heard without contradicting each other. Again, this is illustrated from the fourth century and the Christology of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa. Returning to the question of atonement with this understanding of the task of theology the article seeks to propose a way to reconcile the biblical texts which speak of the atonement as both universal and limited.
