A common view in the philosophy of perception holds that states of seeing objects face to face have particular contents. When you see, say, a dog face to face, your visual state represents the particular dog that is in front of you. In this paper, I argue for a related claim about states of seeing objects in conventional photographs. When you see a dog in a photograph, for example, your visual state represents the particular dog that was in front of (...) the camera when the photograph was taken, that is, the photograph's depictum. The argument in this paper proceeds in two steps. In the first step, I discuss states of seeing objects face to face. I argue that such a state represents the particular object whose surface is responsible for the optical information that the visual system uses to construct the state's attributive representational content. In the second step, I apply the result of this discussion to states of seeing objects in photographs. I argue that a state of seeing an object in a photograph has a particular content that represents the object that was in front of the camera when the photograph was taken. (shrink)

According to the standard view on the issue, the habit of marking questions with a particular typographical sign in Greek and Latin script does not arise prior to the eighth or ninth century. This period is generally credited with the ‘invention’ of the question mark (excepting Syriac evidence, which points to the fifth and sixth centuries). The purpose of the present article is to correct this view. It argues that the first indication for the use of a typographical sign that (...) marks questions can actually be detected no later than during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (a.d. 117–38), that is, more than half a millennium before the traditional date of the invention. The chief witness is Nicanor of Alexandria, who does not seem to have used question marks himself, but criticizes the misappropriation of another punctuation mark to that purpose. He thus indirectly testifies to the existence of question marks. Comparable traces can also be found later in the exegetical works of some Christian commentators. (shrink)

L’auteur rappelle, historiquement, la filiation qu’entretient la déontologie avec la casuistique, en tant qu’éthique appliquée. Il montre, économiquement, que la déontologie relève d’un bien collectif fermé, dit de club, dont il examine la spécificité dans la sphère publique. Il conclut que la déontologie professionnelle est indispensable malgré sa nature conservatrice ou prudente.

En complément des articles consacrés au marché et aux honoraires des avocat·e·s, l’auteur rappelle que l’aide juridictionnelle associe à la clarté millénaire de son principe la difficulté de sa mise en œuvre, lié aux conflits d’objectifs qui la traversent. Ceux-ci sont toutefois amplifiés par des dysfonctionnements sociaux plus vastes.

Die in diesem Band zusammengetragenen Aufsätze sind sowohl Ausdruck als auch Er­ gebnis dieser neuerlichen Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Wissenschaftssoziologie in verschiedenen Ländern und, wie man immer mehr feststellen kann, der ihr einerseits verwandten, andererseits aber auch vorausgehenden und komplementären theoreti­ schen (...) Ansätze in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte und der Wissenschaftstheorie. This chapter pursues a threefold aim: to clarify Kierkegaard's philosophical conception of psychology, to examine the principal reasons for his absence in the work of present‐day psychologists, and to argue for the relevance of his thinking for contemporary psychology. A concise historical sketch of the development of contemporary psychology as an independent scientific discipline brings out the reasons why academic psychologists today have difficulty appreciating philosophical psychology in general, and Kierkegaard's version in particular. This historical sketch allows for a systematic (...) presentation of Kierkegaard's philosophical conception of psychology, focusing on six concepts that are still at the forefront of current psychological research. This presentation unfolds the principal argument of the chapter; namely, that the question of autonomy—in terms of the intricate entanglement of activity and passivity—is the fundamental philosophical problem at the heart of Kierkegaard's psychology. The chapter ends with an outline of how Kierkegaard's exploration of the problem of autonomy can contribute to contemporary psychology. (shrink)

Unique expose d'ensemble de sa philosophie redige par Descartes, les Principes de la philosophie ont ete publies en latin en 1644, puis traduits en francais par l'abbe Claude Picot en 1647. Pour diverses raisons, cette traduction est souvent eloignee de l'original latin. Ce volume presente non seulement le texte latin et la traduction de Picot, mais aussi, pour la premiere fois depuis 1647, une nouvelle traduction, aussi fidele a l'original que possible, d'une bonne part des Principes: la partie I (consacree (...) a la metaphysique ) et une selection d'articles des parties II, III, et IV. On y a ajoute la celebre Lettre-preface que Descartes redigea en francais en 1647. L'ensemble a ete dote d'une introduction et d'une annotation copieuses qui offrent un commentaire suivi et inedit du texte cartesien. (shrink)
